Ex-Madrid boss reveals: I want to manage a Premier League club. Replace Dalglish...?

Prior to Damien Comolli's departure from Anfield, I posted an article outlining John Henry's history of ruthlessness when dealing with failing managers. Whilst I would hate to see Kenny Dalglish sacked, given current league form, I think it's possible that Liverpool may on the lookout for a new manager in the summer, and there are plenty of excellent candidates out there, including former Real Madrid and AC Milan manager Fabio Capello.

The 65-year-old resigned as England manager in February, but his appetite for the game is undiminished. In an interview with Sky Sports yesterday, he ruled out a return to managing in Italy, and made it clear that the Premier League is his preferred destination.

"I want to be a coach for another two years, and I prefer to coach in the Premier League"

The fact that Capello is in his mid-60s probably rules him out of the Anfield job, but it's a shame because he has all the skills and experience to be a success, and if he's proven anything in his management career it's his ability to win league titles with different clubs (nine league titles with four separate teams).

Liverpool need someone to build for the future and two years is not really enought time to do that, but despite this - plus Capello's age - would you still take him at Anfield for two years if the opportunity arose?

  2. After looking at the results of that poll, its good know that somebody is asking the hard questions.

  3. Our manager is KK...................nuff said!!!!

  4. Based on his time with the national team, no. And I can't think of a better candidate than Martin O'Neill at this time.

  5. i think we really need to back dalglish, at least for another year. sometimes giving a manager time can help greatly and at the moment we still have a somewhat young squad. if he can get the transfers right this summer (and i think he can) and learn from his mistakes from the last summer i think we'll get back to the champions league spots.

  6. Sadly i only think one man can produce the goods for this club now, but sadly its at a high price and also if he would willing to come -  that man is the special one! Jose Mourinho.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Of course, i am hoping that Kenny can pull it round and produce the goods, the only thing is i just can't see us attracting world class players!, as they will go to the top 5 clubs, and as much as i hate to say it, we an't looking like one

  8. you hate rafa but would want that tool in?

  9. Who in the right mind would consider a Clueless and regimental manager!!! Yes he has won trophies, leagues here and there!! So has KK (Many years ago)
Capello!!! I would rather take David Moyes and that is saying something!!

  10. Johann Cruyff! I want Johann Cruyff to be the next Liverpool manager.

  11. I'm not sure I understand this.. He wins titles. His teams win. Even with England's poor world cup showing taken into consideration he is still a proven winner and I seem to recall England's winrate with him as manager was better than any other England manager we had for a long time. (if someone has a stat for that it would be useful)

If the argument against him is that people just want KK to have 1 more season then ok I get it. But if its because people think Capello is not good enough then I must be really missing something.

  12. hopefully not for long

  13. Hey Tornike - Totally agree about O'Neill, but I fear that it's too late for him now.  We should've snapped him up after Houllier left, or after Benitez left.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Indeed.  Winning league titles with 4 different clubs? Anyone could do that!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed. O'Neill, never underachieves. No reason why he would do so with us.

If Capello were the option, I would defect to the 'Back King Kenny to have the job for life' faction in an instant. Even if it meant we ended up in the conference.

Capello, in his time for England, made us a boring team, showed he did not know how to deal with players, allowed his captain to ruin morale in the squad, reappointed him, then allowed the same captain to change a court date, meaning the entire squad were going to have to go through a media circus throughout the Euros, then resigned because he could not understand that sponsors were concerned and did not take into account the captain had moved the goalposts. And he was paid 6 million pounds to not do what he was paid to do, take the squad to the euros. I'd sooner have Sven and his eye for the ladies than that boring manager.

  16. Look at his 94 Milan side, he is capable of an attacking team.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd like to see Capello do well in England, to prove the idiots in the media wrong, but we're not the right club.

    ReplyDelete
  18. no,i saw his madrid team play at bernabeu,2 holding midfielders at home.dreadful to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not sure, Mourinho needs a lot of money and seeing the way that he hardly uses one of the best players in the world, Kaka, is a criminal waste of talent, in my opinion. I want us to win, but want to see some decent football at times as well. I'd sooner have Wenger's Arsenal than Mourinho's Chelsea, i think, even if it means not winning stuff. Unfortunately, at the moment, we are getting a combination of the two, not that exciting to watch and not doing that well in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No comments on KK. But Capello hardly managed to make a team with co-ordination and his weakness was evident by the way England played in World cup. Liverpool lacks finish, now i dont want Capello in and lose co-ordination

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think England's performance is the main clue, he doesn't understand the mentality of the English league and the English player. His time as England manager has been nothing less than a disgrace. Bolstered record based on games that meant little. The only time it mattered, the team bombed. And, despite having that to prove, he happily walked in order to defend a player who had moved the goalposts with regard to a court date. Had enough of managers supporting players who move the goalposts, but this guy showed he didn't have the professional pride to put the record straight after the shocking world cup performance. Any manager worth their salt would want to have sorted that out. Not Capello. And now he wants another pay day in England? Not only would i be furious if we took him on, I'd even be furious if teams that i hate (except Man Utd - then i'd laugh) took this guy on. He should never be allowed near English football again. If i supported Tottenham, I'd be very afraid.

  23. BRING RAFA BACK!!!!!!

  24. Not every good manager with great credentials is necessarily good for Liverpool. Now, maybe I sound biased, deluded, etc... but I think Liverpool is quite a unique football club with a soul... not just another big football club.
The manager of this club should really understand the people, the history, the values. Now, remembering how Capello went out and publicly accused his player, Andy Carroll, of drinking too much, which created unnecessary pressure on the young lad and on the club, I don't think this person will ever understand that such things will never be welcome at LFC. And Capello is not known for his flexibility and adaptability, as far as I am aware.
So... Capello: good manager - yes. Liverpool manager - NO.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not so 'special' at pens, though.....

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't think it's fair to judge any manager by their time managing England, that job is a poisoned chalice that makes the Chelsea job look like Ambrosia in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  27. As long as FSG trust Dalglish, then me too. If don't, I'll trust Dalglish always. All he need is a quality assitant manager of quality first team coach.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think Capello would fall short of FSG's youth policy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. no no no no no no no no no oh did I say no?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Either that or he realised what a thankless task managing England is. Average players with expectation sky high and a press who where set to replace him with one 'arry fa cup winner. The guy is a genius. Look at what mourinho has to say about him .
Anyway. Can't believe people want to keep the king. For his own sake. Have, and for the club. Kenny needs to leave before is too late. I hope fsg move him upstairs before is too late. He can't attract players and his tactics are not up to scratch. Never mind the signings. Let's Blame Comolli. If we do that. What manager has players forced upon him? What does it say about Kenny?
He has been out of the game too long. The market is now key. Look at Newcastle

  31. JAMIE PLEASE FUCK OFF YA ANNOYING CUNT

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am with you on this one. Regimental, yes, ruthless , yes... Does it work at international level? No. Club? Absolutely

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bring back Rafa and spanish players would just come to Anfield without considering champions league football whatsoever! I really cannot understand people who say Dalglish is worthy at Anfield...what is their viewpoint based on? Let us be excited with what the King has offered the football club in the 1980's but at the same time being careful that he does not damage our future, that is the simple logic than traumatising subjectivity of some of the so called Liverpool fans!

    ReplyDelete
  34. i don't think the major problem is his record. It's the fact he only wants two years which doesn't lend to a side trying to build stability. We'd be better off with a younger manager if we were to let Kenny go at this stage.

    ReplyDelete
  35. NOOOOO!!! dalglish has us playing some good attacking football. we create tonnes of chances. Its not the manager. we need to be finishing some of these chances off in games. Simple to spot, hard it seems to execute.. It can't last forever this appalling finishing/bud luck or whatever it is this season.

  36. when are you going to stop carping, jamie? get back to manchester!

  37. SEÑOR RAFAEL BENITEZ.

  38. Ditto. Even his Roma side were great to watch. The sight of Cafu bombing up and down the right flank all game long in the wing back position was just awesome.

  39. England team is a lost cause until the right sort of technical and tactically better players come along, regardless who takes over.

    'golden generation'...pffft

  40. exactly 'many years ago'

    ReplyDelete
  41. Good luck getting him to move from Barcelona and good luck getting him to manager again. Apparently, when he was in his latest stint at Ajax (non-managerial role), he would come over to Holland only once a month from Spain.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Our squad, let alone first XI, is not ready for such a short term manager, even though he is a top club manager. He is not a 'builder'-type manager.

    ReplyDelete
  43. it was almost 20 years ago! where has been attack after that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. You are spot on.we need flowing movement and possession.

    ReplyDelete
  45. KK is good. We are possessing well, defending ruthlessly, and veering chances. Its the scoring bit letting us down.we need time and patience. Good player purchase

  48. Your kidding, right?. We have someone who is building for the future DALGLISH! Yesterday or what ever day it was you were saying we needed a younger more modern- approach manager, today you offer up Capello as a positive replacement,I don't think so!!!,better get to grips with it Dalglish will be here next season and hopefully a few more after that!

    ReplyDelete
  49. He is 65 & If we need to build for the future then - The average of our manager need's to between 38 & 50 & He can stop with us a long time then & Make the job his own & Take Liverpool into something new & special. At the moment Kenny Dalglish is still in charge & Will remain in charge. he is 60 & he has the passion & love for this club just like us & he still win's & celebrates like he did when he was 30. YNWA let's cross this bridge when we come to it.

i think we should get RAFA BENITEZ BACK

    ReplyDelete
  51. Keep this trainwreck as far away from Liverpool as possible. It's bad enough we have to deal with Dalglish's antics week in and week out let alone this jackass. Liverpool need a young coach who will help the team transition to modern football and who is invested in the long-term future of the club. YNWA!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. O'Neil isn't good enough to make us into a top four team, let alone a title winning team.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Agreed.  There's a huge gap between the hype of the English media give the national team and their actual ability.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "if he can get the transfers right this summer"  -- there's a very big "if" in there my friend.  It's if the technical director has the right to over rule Dalglish on transfers, or the club enforces stricter criteria on how much money they should spend on what type of players then Dalglish will bring in better players.  You don't run a multimillion pound outfit in Liverpool and just trust a guy to get it right to second time around to not blow tens of millions of pounds again.  That can only happen if Dalglish is bigger than the club - and that can't be allowed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Only thing though is that Capello didn't say he wants to stay in England per se.  He wants to stay in London.  Tottenham could be a good club for him IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Can't really see which part of LFC's league performance KK is really managing, apart from the few cup games...

    ReplyDelete
  57. then where is your viewpoint come from that bringing rafa back will attract spanish player without considering champion league football?

    ReplyDelete
  58. We have flowing movement and possession. We don't have clever tactics in the final third.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think he is the BEST candidate for LFC. He has won the Leauge for EVERY CLUB he has coached . The only time he didn't win anything was when he was FORCED to use English players.
    ...from wikipedia
"As a manager, Capello has the distinction of winning the domestic league title with every club he has coached throughout his career. In his first five seasons as a manager he won four Serie A titles with Milan, where he also won the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League, defeating Barcelona 4–0 in a memorable final. He then spent a year at Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga title at his first attempt, and in 2001 led Roma to their first league title in 18 years. Capello also won two titles at Juventus (which were later stripped after the Calciopoli scandal), and in 2006 returned to Real Madrid, where he won another La Liga title. Overall he has won a major league championship in seven (or nine, counting the two revoked titles with Juventus) of his 16 seasons as a coach."

    ReplyDelete
  60. You can hardly blame him for what England does in the World Cup. They do the same thing no matter who the manager is. It's ENGLAND. They have to use English players... Enough said.

    ReplyDelete
  61. No. He's a LEAGUE WINNER type manager...

    ReplyDelete
  62. As much as i like dalglish. He has done what he can. The players he has bought are not worthy to wear a liverpool shirt.
We need a big clearout. They need to give someone New a chance to move our beloved club forward YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  63. Giardiola please...

    ReplyDelete
  64. Caello is great, but guardiola is a much better option! He's young, proven and has an admiration for liverpool, especially our academy. He seems like someone who would actually use it!

    ReplyDelete
  65. WE NEED GUARDIOLA! HES LEAVING BARCA!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jamie we would be crazy not to pursue pep guardiola! He ticks so many boxes for us! Especially his age!

    ReplyDelete
  67. pep guardiola or frank rijkaard

    ReplyDelete
  68. a lot of money like ...say... 100m??? isnt that the amount that queen kenny has wasted???

    ReplyDelete
  69. The mentality of the English player is a losing one... if you want to win titles.. you don't buy Brit crap.. you buy players that actually have talent...England will never win anything on the intl stage bcuz they are selfish, mediocre crap...

    ReplyDelete
  70. How is that "stability" working out for Chelscum?? oh yeah.. they're in the CL final!..LOL.. that line is getting tired and is being used by the lemmings to protect queen kenny when he should be fired...

    ReplyDelete
  71. boohoo... poor carroline..

    ReplyDelete
  72. In regards to our next manager IF KK leaves, I think Marcelo Bielsa of Athletic Bilbao is the best manager in the world at the moment, he is doing amazing things at San Mames and was awesome for Chile before, that is unless Barca get him (provided Pep leaves).
On the topic of KK being useless and we should hang him from the gallows etc etc... The main criticism that people have for him is his transfer policy. He signed Adam after the Blackpool captain had 2 fantastic seasons at Blackpool, scoring, creating and bossing in the midfield with mediocre players around him, and Dalglish signed him for much less than Holloway wanted to sell for. He signed Enrique, cheap and probably one of the top 4 left backs in the league. He signed Henderson, a young local talent who was doing great things at Sunderland, captaining the young lions and showing to be one of the most promising young midfielders in the league. He signed Stuart Downing, who had a couple of decent seasons and we were in desperate need of out and out wingers who were already premier league proven. Andy Carroll was a desperation signing at the end of the window following the departure of Torres, but once again had really come to bloom at newcastle and was proving to be one of the most promising young strikers england has produced in a while, up there with Welbeck and Sturridge.
So before you crit him too bad, have a look at the thought process behind the decisions, not the effects of said decisions.

  73. If Kenny step down, I prefer these managers

    Rafael Benitez

    Laurent Blanc

    Frank Rijkaard

    Rudi Garcia(Lille)

    Rene Girard (Montpellier)

    Didier Deschamps (Marseille)

    Unai Emery (Valencia)

    Marcelo Bielsa (Bilbao)

    Francesco Guidolin (Udinese)

    Bruno Labbadia (Stuttgart)

    Thomas Tuchel (Mainz)

    Herve Renard (Zambia)

or unlikely Pep & Jurgen Klopp

    Over.... Capello...

    RED REALIST,

I like that list mate good call

  76. IMHO I loathe even the "idea" !!
Remember his man management skills during the world cup? This will not work with English players and as Liverpool seem to be building on that front we need to stay well clear. I believe his style would be seen as "Red rag to a Bull here"
My biggest disgust with him was an interview he gave when appointed!
"In one month, I speaka the English language"
He didn't  manage that in FIVE years!!!!
Kenny will do and if we have to change, lets hope Jose M is available.
    LFC forever.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Absolutely not. Why change? The Reds under Dalglish, along with Spurs earlier in the season, have played great football, unfortunately not matched by results. But results are not everything. Look at Barca against Chelsea. Chelsea were an absolute disgrace in both games. Is this what you want? If so go and support a Sunday morning pub team.

    ReplyDelete
  78. So far you are the only one that spotted that! You win the cigar!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yes, I think he is preparing to take over from AF though!

    ReplyDelete
  80.  What makes you think different?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yes because all manager make the correct signing every time. You don't build a title winning side over night.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Obviously not a Liverpool fan and not really a football fan with disrespectful comments like that.

    ReplyDelete
  83. His track record with the teams he's managed so far makes me think he's a proper candidate for the job. Jaimie has written about that with O'Neill's managerial stats as well.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The man cant even speak English! How you would want him at LFC is beyond me. That was one of the major issues he had as England  manager, that he couldn't communicate what he needed to the team.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The manager i would like to see at the club is Kenny is replaced is Gus Hiddink, shame he hasnt long signed the contract at the super rich Russian club - Anzhi Makhacl whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  86.  we already have a quality assistant manager in clarke what we need is a better manager there won't be a huge difference if we bring in a someone else I mean the assistant mangager doesnt sign players

    ReplyDelete
  87. the same spanish players that left when we lost champions league football?

    ReplyDelete
  88. What the hell is your point thats like saying chelsea bought torres to fire in 40 goals a season the thought process behind that is clear but he hasn't and it hasnt worked out so why the hell does the thought process matter so much oh yeah it doesnt.

    ReplyDelete
  89. That he is but our team isn't good enough for that. Compare our team to his league winning sides, the gap is huge.

    ReplyDelete
  90. When I see flowing movement akin to the level of movement that Suarez is a part of for Uruguay, than I'll call what we have 'flowing movement'. Just my view
