Liverpool midfield legend Dietmar Hamann has made it clear in the past that he's a big fan of summer signing Jordan Henderson, and earlier in the season, he made the dubious prediction that Hendo would easily make it into the full England squad for Euro 2012. Well, six months later, I think it's obvious that The Kaiser, got it horribly wrong (!).
In October 2011, Hamann - who won every trophy bar the league during a fantastic career with Liverpool - enthused:
"I have absolutely no doubt that he [Henderson] will go to the Euros next year. He's a very talented kid, and England have to bring these players through now and take them to major tournaments".
Even in the first couple of months of the season, I'm not sure many fans would've agree this; setting Henderson's potential aside for a moment, he has next to no England experience, so the idea that he would just suddenly walk into the team for a major tournament was stretching it a little.
Henderson recently admitted that he's had an 'up and down' season for Liverpool, and with only 1 goal and 1 assist in the league this year, I don't see how he has done enough to make it into the full England squad for Euro 2012.
Was Hamann right: will Henderson make it into the Euros? Does he deserve to make the England squad? Or, in the words of Frank Cross, was Didi's prediction "A hallucination brought on by Russian vodka, poisoned by Chernobyl!" ?

your sooooo annoying jamie
ReplyDeletehelucination, delusion, hit on the head, on crack or high take ur pick
ReplyDeletei don't why know why hamann would make a stupid prediction like that unless it was on the official site or lfc tv where hyperbole and papering over the cracks is order of the day.
ReplyDelete2 weeks ago he was saying we should sign franco di snato.
the morale of the tale is don't listen to hamann.
He's the England U21 Captain! If he has a good end of year it may not be that fsr from the truth...!
ReplyDeleteOnly one thing comes to mind when I think of Henderson, why all the hype about potential? Just dont see it...
ReplyDeletei agree.you look at shelvey and kelly and see potential.
ReplyDeleteall i see with henderson is somebody who is afraid to take a chance and always looks for the safest option available.
To be fair, Hamman did say this ages ago near the start of the season...
ReplyDeleteHendo will come good, when we finally start playing with real width and pace, with Hendo in the middle, space will open up for him
ReplyDeleteGerrard or Lamps haven't been great this season either!! Will they / should they make Euros?
He might get lucky, depending on injuries. If Wilshere is back in time, than Hendo hasn't got a chance.
ReplyDeleteHendo seems like, to me anyway, one of those safe players that rely on others around him to get the best out of him and without that help, they are ineffective on their own, bit like Park Ji Sung.
ilshire is meant to be back in 2-3 weeks.
ReplyDeletefar superior player to henderson.
henderson's only chance of going is if pearce remains in charge but can't see that happening.
20% voted that he deserves to make the squad?
ReplyDeleteglad i'm not english,20% of votes base that on what?
ReplyDeletehe hasn't been premier league standard yet alone international football standard.
Jamie, surely this is a wind-up right?
ReplyDeletecaptain of england u21 always plays well for them but needs more time to mature and adjust to the pressure of LFC
ReplyDeleteu r a tit
ReplyDeleteno doubt that 20% are all scots !
ReplyDeleteWhoever voted yes are on crack.
ReplyDeleteNot yet. Very obviously not yet. However, Henderson could well be England's best wide midfielder in the Milner mould by the 2016 Euros. His original position may be central midfield and it probably still is his best position - but I believe we bought him to be a winger, maybe as Kuyt's long term replacement but a midfielder instead of a striker.
ReplyDeleteHenderson has got all the tricks we would enjoy watching from the likes of Suarez and Nani, except the trick of going horizontal and rolling around. Problem is he clearly has not incorporated his tricks into his play. He has also got the pace to beat defenders, but he seems to prefer creating space just so he can pass backwards. Alot of this is all mental, a matter of perspective and it would probably be more fair to say he hadn't been educated the right way - the way Shelvey, Sterling and Kelly had.
It did take a while to educate Lucas didn't it?
Didi is an excellent pundit. He's knowledgeable an I would trust what he sees. Probably show his value next year.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, Henderson probably wont make the Euro squad.
ReplyDeleteHowever the lad is talented, even though he's only shown it in glimpses.
I think he feels he's still very much a junior within Liverpools ranks, and is looking for leadership rather than providing it.
He just needs more time to mature, once that happens, then we'll see his true ability come to the fore.
Its just a shame he's been forced into a struggling team at this stage of his development.
Of all Kenny's signings, he's the one I feel most likely to succeed.
Just hope we don't destroy the kid before that happens...
KK needs time to build a team for the future. Hendo will come good.
ReplyDeleteHe is nothing like Suarez or Nani, technically or in terms of flair. Unless you have access to training videos, he was nothing like them at Sunderland nor at Liverpool so far.
ReplyDeleteWhats the point commenting on a comment Didi made 6 MONTHS AGO !!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed Henderson is a safe player. Don't see why Hamann and Kenny rate him so highly and certainly not worth the 20m plus price tag. Don't quite see the potential in him and don't even know why he was selected for U-21.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't quite agree with you on the Park Ji Sung bit. Park contributes more to the game than Henderson and certainly more skillful. Before he joined MU, he was fantastic for PSV Eindhoven. He reads the game better and certainly more laborious.
Henderson ought to be sold. He has contributed nothing to Liverpool. It still puzzles me why the experts think he has good potentials.
Well, yeah it took a while for Lucas to get going. But Lucas showed flashes of his skills before that. Can't say the same for Hendo. Even if it takes time for him to blend in and build confidence, there will still be signs of his brilliance. Sadly, most people are still waiting for that one moment.
ReplyDeleteStevie is best suited for the central midfield. But if you play him out on the left or right like Rafa sometimes do, he is still effective. I wouldn't group him into the Suarez and Nani bunch. I have yet to see his pace and trickery.
Well, I hope we are all wrong here for Hendo's sake. A young lad who wants to make it in football. But for the time being, its just not happening.
If Pearce goes the Euros, there is a slight chance because I've seen him play some brilliant stuff for the u-21s. I doubt even then, though.
ReplyDeleteEngland team FFS he shouldn't be in LFC team.
ReplyDeleteHendo aka the kit-model a England player..ha ha ha he is the most garbage & lousy liverpool in history..cannot passed.no skill.no brain.useless.cannot scored.cannot tackle..whenever this hendo starts or sub on liverpool match its really piss off me..hendo is the most overrated LFC player in history..hendo should play in championship or low-level division..LFC should sell him in the summer
ReplyDeletePlay him in centre-midfield and he is a cracking player....................end of!!!!
ReplyDeletei remember watching john barnes and the usual lfc tv pundits trying to convince themselves that he was going to be the new ray houghton on the right hand side.absolute deluded bollox.
ReplyDeletei'm a firm believer that you either have it or you don't.
look at sterling and the impact he made against wigan, shelvey is another.they're just naturally talented footballers whereas henderson doesn't seem up to it.
everybody agrees that wilsh is better than hendo but can any1 imagine the gunner playing out on the right wing ?????? and not in his natural central position ...
ReplyDeletelucas was a great prospect with a fantastic reputation in brazil when we signed him.don't see why some people are using him as a yardstick with which to measure henderson by.it's like some people are trying to convince themselves that henderson is a decent player.
ReplyDeleteso you'd agree with him when he says we should sign franco di santo?
ReplyDelete'show his value next year'?
what? he's a pundit not a developing young footballer.
It incredible, wonder if they are talking about football!!
ReplyDeleteHe said this about 6 months ago!!! B
ReplyDeleteSabotage, yes, very clever! Presumably, they want Dalglish as England manager as well?
ReplyDeleteNot to mention that we are talking about the Euros THIS SEASON!
ReplyDeleteYes, every time someone flops, a Kenny apologist comes on and uses Lucas as an example. There's lots of reasons why Lucas is a different case. Coming straight from South America being the obvious one. Benitez changed his role also.
ReplyDeleteIf he did, he would do a better job, that is for sure.
ReplyDeleteThe Ryan Babel thread shows the way that Henderson should be judged. His performances are worse and yet people are coming out with all these excuses for him. The guy has been absolutely average and shown no more determination than Babel. But nowhere near the same level of skills or number of goals. It's pure hypocrisy, for want of a better word, to see people sticking up for Henderson's garbage.
He's about as close to the England squad as lionel Messi is.......
