Angry LFC star blasts: Newcastle's James Perch is a 'Joke'...

Injured defender Glen Johnson has slammed James Perch for his disgraceful play-acting during Newcastle's 2-0 win over Liverpool earlier today.

During a fracas with Pepe Reina, Perch crumpled to ground like he'd just been shot in the face, yet video replays show there was nowhere near enough contact to cause such an extreme reaction.

Reina was stupid to lose his cool and attempt a Zidane right in front of the referee, but Perch's shameful histrionics probably influenced the referee's decision to show the Spaniard a red card.

Johnson was disgusted by Perch's play-acting, and tweeted:

"What have I just seen. Is Perch for real?!?!?! #Joke"

Perch should be embarrassed by that; it's almost as bad as Rivaldo's play-acting at against Turkey at the World Cup in 2002:



Overall, Reina probably deserved the red card for his stupidity and intent, and Newcastle deserved to win the game, but that doesn't change the fact that Perch basically cheated in a bid to get a fellow professional sent off.

  5. come on, i think your concentrating on the wrong guy here, yes perch made a meal of it. but to be fair to him, he went for a ball that was there to be won, he went in fairly, pepe reacted like a spoiled kid say dont touch my ball, and even if perch didnt go down, pepe should have gone, for the going in first with his head, regardless of how hard he went in

  30. As a Geordie I have to say I was embarrassed by the players behaviour, to go down like that trying to get a fellow professional footballer sent off is a disgrace. TV replays for me showed there was absolutely no contact so I hope gets some stick from his team mates when he returns to training for his rubbish acting.

    Andy Carroll take a look at James Perch, at least there was contact when he took a dive.

  44. Reina made contact  - he had to go (his intention was clear). Anyway it had no impact on the game. The bigger story is that Dalglish looks like he's lost the dressing room. Not dissimilar to what happened with him at Newcastle and Celtic. Now the question for LFC fans is would it be a good thing to win the FA Cup and that Dalglish stays on as manager into next season? Benitez had a fluke win in the Champions League which made him virtually untouchable despite his ongoing high churn of players (which inevitably meant that sooner or later he'd get a good team together - law of averages saw that happen in first half of 2009 - but that it wouldn't stay together long - see second half of 2009). Dalglish could benefit from a double cup win in the same way even though he clearly looks like he's a long way from putting a team together that can get consistent good results. (Consistent bad results this last few weeks). Now even Gerrard doesn't 'believe' any more.

  49. That's because Guthrie hadn't pledged his career to liverpool (plus he's not even scouse). Carroll did. Every Geordie lad dreams of being Newcastle's number 9. Carroll threw that all away and he did it in a bad way, he went to liverpool for money - nothing more. He's a Judas.

    Enrique went to Liverpool for 'Champions league football' The crowd are just rubbing his nose in the fact that Newcastle United are currently higher up the table.

    The only other player to get booed was Jordan Henderson. He played for Sunnderland so that was always going to happen with the rivalry we have. You're not from the North East so you won't get it... especially with your 'Friendly derby' with Everton.

    And again I'll repeat my Perch point - Look at Suarez... people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones..

  52. Reina reminds me of Grobelaar in his last few seasons at LFC - remember 0-2 Arsenal, 3-4 C.Palace, 4-4 Everton, 3-3 Man Utd (twice!). Very typical scorelines of LFC, especially back then. Of course Grobelaar did not throw any games back then - its been proved in court.

    And be careful what you wish for, as a Man Utd fan it would be great if Rafa replaces Dalglish at LFC - he can start his transfer merry-go-round again. FSG better have deep pockets.

  58. Because the truth hurts and you might just hear it from a non-LFC fan. Man Utd  were pretty much where you are now in the '80s (great captain, great cup wins, regular wins over our biggest red rivals who kept winning the league, expensive english striker who couldn't score i.e. Carroll = Birtles) but Man Utd never really looked like winning the league although we came runners-up twice. Sound familiar? The Man Utd managers talked a great game of football too. Back then a Man Utd fan was a lot more likely to hear the truth from a non-Man Utd fan also.

    Carroll dived - or (more humiliating) fell over the ball!!! and saw yellow. He did want to score today, and deserved better from his opening header. The "penalty" from that would have been given in 50% of matches.

    Suarez could have been booked for his screaming, although he has learned, that one man can make another get punished for 8 matches, when you scream the right thing at the right time.

    Peach (ehhh - not spelled correct by intention) had nothing to do against Reina in the goalarea, and could have had a  double yellow for the foul and for the teatrical part.

    KKD - very few LFC-supporter would take it as an Aprils Fool, if the rumour came out, that he had resigned!! But - I hope he does so in a respectful way by being promoted into a role around the board, as soon as the run for the FA-cup is over (hopefully when the triumph is done at Wembley).

    Gerrard and Carragher has to accept that they cannot keep going on in the way, they have done for years, as their approach to the game has been read, and they have grown slower over the years. They cannot lift the team on their own anymore.

    I am sure the Mr&Mr Henry and Werner know the situation is tensed around Anfield and Melwood. I am sure they work behind the scenes to bring a solution. Maybe Steve Clark could be ready as caretaker (he has qualified through all his years as second string around). Maybe they have something settled with Bielsa or Laudrup or Schuster or Löw after the Euro's. We do not know - but we can be sure they know the desparation is everywhere around LFC. We just have to wait........ wait.....

It's not Rafa's "net spend" that is the issue (although that was higher than, say, Ferguson's in the equivalent period), or that the transfers were bad (though many were average) - its the constant 'churn' of players that occurred when Rafa was in charge that's the problem. Its not apparent with the other 'big' clubs he managed (Valencia, Inter) because he was with them for a relatively short period of time but it happened continuously at LFC - check the number of players that came and went at LFC while Rafa was there. That constant churn is destabilising in itself. He was constantly buying and selling players (throwing them together in the hope that a team would stick and, to be fair, he did get a team together in 08-09 but because of the 'churn' factor it was destablised - the messing around with Robbie Keane and Alonso wanting to leave).

    As for Dalglish it's not the first time he's bought poor players - check his last year at Liverpool the first time around and most of his purchases at Newcastle. The exceptions are his first round of buying at Liverpool (Barnes/Aldridge/Houghton/Beardsley) and his "Abramowich" type buys while he was at Blackburn (Shearer/Sutton/Flowers). The Blackburn purchases were not that 'clever' though, insofar as he was buying the most expensive available players at the time (he even came close to getting Roy Keane to join Blackburn), a bit like buying Bale or Van Persie today. However the Barnes/Aldridge/Houghton/Beardsley transfers (in 1987?) were inspired - so  much so that I suspect that maybe LFC's 'bootroom' had a bigger influence on transfers than it has been credited for. Just my theory :)

Now I'm not saying perch was right in what he done but before you lot start having a go at players for play acting and trying to get fellow pros sent off. Start looking closer to home and ask yourself if Andy Carroll was trying to get tim krul sent off or not. You got hammered fair and square stop trying to make your excuses and take it like Newcastle did 2 seasons ago.

  102. Champions League 2005 was an obvious fluke (and all the more enjoyable because of that) but Premier League 08-09 was also fluke but in a different way:

    first third of 08-09 LFC got a lot of points, went unbeaten until they lost to a terrible Spurs team. However for most of that first third of the season LFC did not play that well but got 'lucky' in the number of points picked up (if you check back on the reporting and comments of that time you'll see the phrase 'winning while not playing well is the sign of champions' or similar gets mentioned quite a lot). During the middle third of that season the results started to match the performances and there were many draws culminating in a shambolic defeat against a woeful Middlesbrough. LFC were 10 points behind and out of the running. Rafa at this point abandons his 'safety first' approach to matches and decides to gamble on attack and so for the last third of the season LFC go all out to win every match and outscore their opponents - its this last third of the season that Rafa fans remember fondly as LFC gain points on Man Utd, and they forget all the unadventurous home draws earlier in the season. The flukey bit is that the team Rafa put together was a result of the churn of players - he'd put together a team almost at random but there was no way it could be sustained as Rafa's own methods (i.e. the "churn" itself) undermined it and would soon break it up - as subsequent events showed when Aquilani was brought in for Alonso.

  141. You can't fault Reina on the first goal. It was headed across the goal coming off the far post. No chance especially since Skrytl fooled Reina by trying to head clear. Second goal, were totally exposed. How can you blame the goalie anyways, when at the end of the day, the team can't score goals.

  142. That constant churn of players got rid of the average players as Rafa wanted to only keep world beaters. He would have kept Alonso, he would have maybe kept Keane. He would never have considered selling them if he wasn't in the boat of selling to buy. Maybe Keane because he wasn't as reliable at that price, but look at the resale value we got back. The thing with Rafa, he was changing players constantly to get the right setup to challenge.

    Dalglish has had all season to tinker with this squad and they are failing. How can it be any different next season with this group of players? I don't see Dalglish getting rid of some of the average players we have in the squad. So we will stick with them until the contracts expire. Unless teams are stupid enough to bid a fair price. I would give Dalglish one more season to prove that this team isn't a cup team. And if these results continue in the next season, then he just has to go. Period. But as things are now, its not eye popper to see him go now.

Perch should have received a second yellow card for the dive after a first yellow for kicking Reina while he was trying to set up a counter attack with the Newcastle defenders way out of position.  Reina's reaction was angry but made little or no contact and therefore also deserved a yellow.  Add that to the 2 offside goals and the deliberate handball on the line and you can conclude that the referee didn't have his best game.

    He has steadied a sinking ship, made mistakes with some high profile transfers and must be given opportunity to rectify them. You cannot tell me there is anyone more passionate for LFC than Dalglish and if he felt it in the best interests of the club, OF Course he would step down!!!

To his credit at least he did not stay on the floor writhing around in "pain". He got up and got on with it. No one likes to see it but jumping on Perch when it occurs every weekend is a bit strong.
