Should Liverpool offer this goalscoring Legend a short-term deal...?

Anfield legend Robbie Fowler had been training with Blackpool over the last week, and it looks like he may be handed a short-term deal until the end of the season. In a season of romantic comebacks that has already seen the likes of Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and Paul Scholes return to the English game, it would be great to see Fowler back in action too, preferably at Anfield.

Speaking to The Mirror, Fowler - who scored 183 goals for Liverpool - was honest about his current state of match fitness, but seemed keen to get back on the pitch. He noted:

"I haven’t kicked a ball for five or six weeks, so I’m a bit rusty, but my overall fitness is very good, and I’ve enjoyed working with the Blackpool lads.

"I don’t know what will happen, to be honest, I haven’t had much time to think about it as I was only asked to go in and see the club on Thursday.

"But I have a lot of respect for Ian – he’s a really decent guy and I admire the way his teams play football. If I can help out in any way then I’d love to get involved.”

Just imagine if mid-1990s Robbie Fowler was at Liverpool right now; the club would probably be top of the league at the moment, such is the difference a prolific natural goalscorer makes to the team.

I don't think I've ever seen a more natural goalscorer for Liverpool in my lifetime; Fowler was a genius, and I'm sure he still has some of that goalscoring ability in his locker.

To be honest, I would take Fowler back at Liverpool right now. If Henry and keane can make an impact, so can Robbie, who has the goalscoring instinct that's missing from Liverpool at the moment.

I know it sounds ridiculous given Fowler's age, but could he do any worse than Andy Carroll? What do Liverpool have to lose?

One King has already returned to the club; let's bring back another for the last few months of the season. If nothing else, perhaps the likes of Suarez and Carroll could learn a thing or two about finishing.

  1. Jamie I don't think it's fair that you've just singled Andy out, NONE of our forward players are setting the world alight with the scoring at the minute and on recent form Andy is probably top with minutes per goal. Seems like any excuse to snipe and people are on his back, even though he didn't okay yesterday. An the fact he came on for 3 minutes will chalk up another 'appearance per goal' negative statistic.
As for Robbie, definitely. He'd probably play for free! And why not? I think all of our players could learn from him when it comes to hitting the onion bag.

  2. How come my comments are being reviewed these days mate?

  3. I thought about this the other day when I saw he was linked with Blackpool. Yes, he's 36 but Linford Christie was older when he won his Olympic gold medal.
Even if he was to come on for the last 15 minutes of a game, his vision, predatory instinct and natural ability in finding the net could help us where we've been lacking most this season.

  4. Hi Chucky - your comments are not being reviewed; due to the ever increasing spam/sabotage attempts, the word filter is quite strict these days, and that means some perfectly fine posts get held back if certain word combinations are triggered.  Sorry about that - it's a necessity unfortunately.

  6. We could go the other way and give Pacheo, Eccelston or Amoo ago seeing they are
all aged over 20 now and and would add 1 to 2 million to any resale value if
they fail with having Premier League experience or they could prove to be the next Fowler and save the club £20 million.

  7. Given Andy Carroll a run within 5 minutes stoppage time is really a joke. £35m wasted. King doing same mistake Rafa did. For not using substitution earlier.

  8. I wouldn't offer him a short term contract, I would offer him a full time contract! Not as a player though, as a first team coach! Someone who can instill some belief back intothe attacking players to start scoring again!

  9. yeah why not. put him left wing he would do better than downing, or centre mid he would be better than adams, or hey why not on the right he would do better than henderson, infact if bellamys anything to go by, grab him!!
apart from the fa cup roll on next season and bin most the garbage we have bought, they are expensive squad players at best.
yesterday just summed it all up and the story of our season (premiere league) some players will never have the right mentallity.
sad thing is i bet we miss 4th by a few points and it will be the usual wat if!!

What you need to do is go to the police and say that people are being nasty to you on your website.
See if they give a sh1t or tell you to go away and stop bothering them.
Or maybe you can get your famous Private Investigator involved.
    hahahahahahahahahaha

  15. Agreed Ray  but I'm waiting for the die hards to admit Kenny was the wrong appointment.
I guarantee it will take until Xmas this year before the penny drops in many fans heads.

  16. like the die hards who thought Alex Ferguson was the wrong appointment in 1987? and 88? and 89? and 90? and 91? and 92?

    Kenny's the right guy.

  18. I think bringing him in to train would be good for the club, to play no not really though, I've watched him in Oz and Thailand and he is so so slow nowadays his touch has gone to, I just think he's be a boost moral wise though if he came in and trained with us.

  19. I would bet that if he did come bck he would score more than the 6 goals surez has got so far?? any takers!!

  20. lol so Fowler > Suarez! Where do you people come from?

  21. Nothing to lose bringing him in for 3 months. However seeing as it would be Liverpool bringing him in and not United or Arsenal, the media would try to make us the butt of jokes as usual. Would love to see some of the younger lads given minutes on the pitch. We really don't have anything to lose now, 4th place looks unreachable.

  22. To bad Liverpool don't have the composure to hold possession in the last 15 minutes of the game especially if they are trailing a goal, or tied in the game.

  23. I must say that i'm really disappointed with Kenny really. He has been making lame excuses for every poor performance Liverpool gave this season. Kenny is a good motivator, but not a good tactician. He cannot inspire a team to win with tactics. And my god ! he should not be given any money to buy players! I wonder if Benitez got the same backing ! we would certainly be having some true 'world-class' players right now.

  24.  Are you being serious? Fowler is no where near premiership quality anymore. He is way to slow and his finishing is not what it was.

As for doing no worse than Carroll, yes he could and would be alot worse. Carroll has improved over the last few weeks. His hold up play has been excellent, he passing and his touch much improved.

Dont get me wrong i respect Fowler as much as any LFC supporter but his best days are long behind him.

  25. COMPLETELY agree.  Fowler lacks the pace that 2012 football is based on, and will not get as much time on the ball as he used to because the defending is alot tighter these days too.  Case in point, Michael Owen, he was stellar in his young days, pace for days and finisher like no other.  But the game has changed now, and players like Pacheco, Suso, Eccelston and Amoo have grown up playing the NEW game, and are more equipped to do so.

We need to give the young lads a chance to prove themselves int he first team and stop looking backwards into our history for band-aid solutions that will do more harm then good.

  26. We waste our reserve and youth players(forwards) sell them or release them for next to nothing! Reserves that have served their apprenticeship at Kirby and Melwood deserve a chance to prove themselves, especially if they have been scoring goals and getting assists or could offer what we are missing especially Eccleston at the moment the closes thing
to Sturridge has pace to burn and can play on the wing and up front.
You mentioned Suso but him Morgan and Sterling are the next crop coming through we should give the older ones a chance first.

    ReplyDelete
  27. exactly - even if Fowler had a good couple of months, it would make no difference to what the club achieves this season. But would serve to block the progress of the youngsters who could contribute in years to come, if given the opportunity to step up ahead of their failing counterparts

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would've forgiven Carroll for pulling a "Tevez" there - what the heck did Dalglish hope to accomplish by bringing on the guy in the 93rd minute, other than to get him a few boos and even worse stats?!?

    ReplyDelete
  29. No.. Believe in the current team and what we are trying to achieve.  Carroll will become a great player for LFC, just give him time.  Just like Lucas when he first joined, everyone slated him now we put him as the first person on the team sheet.

  30. Thought Fowler had gone back a lot when he last was with us, and I'm not sure he has looked after himself as well as Henry or Keane, but it would be great to have him train with the team. Man Utd always use ex players to train with the youngsters and reserves, Scholes, recently, and Solskjaer, so I reckon that getting Fowler, Barnes and Rush and co involved would be great for our current squad and the youngsters. Surely it would be more inspiring to them than Kevin Keen! But, for the first team, I would much sooner see a youngster get in than us bring Fowler back. Once condition goes, often finishing goes as well, because players don't have the speed of mind or body to get themselves in position that split second earlier to take their chances.

Think Carroll will come good as well, in fact, apart from Bellamy and Enrique, he is probably looking better than any of the other recent signings. His goal return is not even that much less than Suarez who, apparently, is unbelievable.

  31. thatwas abit of a joke, however this is how bad it is, we are all answering to the question of wetherto bring back fowler. the fact that our players are playing good football but cant seem to hit anything other than the crown or woodwork suggest we are in need of someone to stick the ball in the back of the net. time and time again i have seen us pile down the wing, a ball comes in and no one is there.
