Water is wet, the sky is blue, Liverpool fans despise Jose Mourinho, and Chelsea fans hate Rafa Benitez. That's just the natural order of things, and given the hostility between the two clubs over the last 8-10 years, how could it be any different? During Chelsea's FA Cup tie with Birmingham last week, Blues fans made it clear that Benitez is not welcome at Stamford Bridge, but the former Liverpool manager is not bothered by the vitriol being spewed his way; he still wants the job, and believes he can guarantee success in Europe.
In an interview with the BBC yesterday, Benitez reiterated his interest in the Chelsea job, and promised to win over the the club's fans if was given the role by Roman Abramovich: He explained:
"When I went to Valencia they were in the final of the Champions League and I was coming from the second division with Tenerife.
"At Valencia, the fans complained 'he's a young coach' and they were not sure about me. After winning two league titles and the UEFA Cup, they loved me. So the fans know what they want to see - and that's their team winning.
"I won the European Cup with an English club. What are Chelsea looking for? A manager who can win in Europe. If they have someone that can guarantee they can win a lot of games and especially in the Champions League, they will be happy."
Benitez sounds really desperate for a job, but who can blame him after so long on the sidelines. You'd think he would learn after the Milan fiasco though: following in the slipstream of Jose Mourinho is always going to end in failure, and I think it would be the same at Chelsea.
Benitez would have to deal with fan apathy; the spectre of Mourinho's achievements, and Abramovich's demand for almost instant success. Additionally, as a manager who openly despises boardroom interference in his role, why would he want to manage a team where the all-powerful Owner takes an almost paternalistic 'interest' in team affairs?
Mourinho to Liverpool and Benitez to Chelsea in an ironic twist of fate? Stranger things have happened...

Really hope he goes there tbh, i don't like him hanging around on Merseyside.....
ReplyDeleteIm sure Torres would suddenly and miraculously re find his form also....
Rather see him at Chelsea than back at Anfield thats for sure, though i just can't see it happening.
Fingers crossed though.
If Roman is ok with Chelsea just concentrating one major trophy per season, than Rafa is the man I guess but if you want to juggle and go for both PL and CL, than I would have my doubts about Rafa. Rafa isn't a great man-manager when it comes to utilising and getting the best out of non-first XI players as well as rotating wisely, which is one of the factors as to why he couldn't juggle both CL and PL simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteso being the most feared side in europe was not enjoyable? turning real 5-0, beating barca and manure regularly? you'd prefer 'the king' and his mid table dross? sounds like good logic to me. not.
ReplyDeletewe were hard to beat, we challenged, we attracted top players, unlike downing, henderson , adam and carroll.
that is the closest we've been to good times in a long long time, and id bet my bottom $, much closer than 'the king' will eve come during this second coming.
If Mancini fails to win the league Rafa will be City's new manager in the summer.
ReplyDeleteRowanuk is spot on, I long for the week that we beat Madrid, Utd and Villa scoring about 15 goals in the process...Istanbul (and the route there),Cardiff, Athens, Chelsea semis, Torres, Alonso, Arbeloa, Mascherano - even Babel sometimes! Now I think we have mid to top 6 players like Carroll etc and I fear at who we might spend the next £100m on - I guarentee had Rafa been given that kind of money we would be almost unbeatable as he was always juggling the money. I love the King as much as the next real red, but we celebrated winning Carling Cup like Champions League and yet we are worse off in the league than last year. Why can Maxi not get a game?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the point of the youth policy if Kenny is too scared to play them - he lives in fear just like Rafa
ReplyDeleteLike every other LFC fan I love Kenny and granted every new manager should be given time to bed their philosophy and players into the team.
ReplyDeleteLet's see where we are at the end of the season.
Benitez.. he worked within extremely difficult conditions in his final two years at the club, and I would not have a problem with him returning in the event it doesn't work out with Kenny at the helm. He understands the club.
If we don't, I think Chelsea or even RM may go for him. What are Mourinho's plans?
Considering his failure at Inter, a chelsea move would be a foolish. If he were to crash and burn at Chelsea, the ghost of Mourinho would surely devour him.
ReplyDeleteEvery club has legends but most of the clubs don't leave in the past like many of our fans do. Now KK is a legend and will always be. But just cos he is a legend r we going to exept finishing 7th or 8th maybe every season. And b4 people start talking about CC please stop embarrassing yrself. CC is rubbish and apart from people in England nobody counts that as a trophy. Champ league is where we should b and nothing else will do. So I would love KK move upstairs and I would have RAFA 2morrow as our mngr. I'd rather watch us play in European Cup finals than CC finals. YNWA
ReplyDeleteHead to head with Mourino Rafa won , Mourino's brief was win Champions league for Chelsea he didn't . Rafa did God bless him , how did you do that ? Dont care you did . Do one Jose , Rafa's got your number .
ReplyDeleteas much as i admire rafa and what he did for the club i wouldn't like to see him back at lfc,i think if anything dalglish coming back has shown us that you shouldn't come back-similar to keegan at newcastle.
ReplyDeletei hope rafa doesn't go to chelsea either, the club is poison.fat frank and terry wouldn't want him.would hate to see him end up there.
Totally agree mate. People forget how Rafa built his side (the 07-08/08-09 teams) up for the whole period. He made players like Benayoun, Garcia, Kuyt perhaps even Masch look like world beaters when in fact they were pretty regular. Even Peter Crouch as well. People forget how hard we were to beat, and when we drew Madrid in the last 16 in CL, I don't think a single Liverpool fan doubted we'd win that tie. Can we really say the same now? - I don't even think we'll beat stoke in the FA cup.
ReplyDeleteraffa wont take no nonsense from them big eegos, but will also earn respect. he put liverpool back on the map in 2005.
ReplyDeleteraffa and jose are quite the same regarding tactics, hes the best option they have and i hope he dont go.
why? because he will be able to prize top talent over from spain, with the wealth of the russian it wont be a problem wat so ever and hes quite respected over there. mark my words.
IMO Rafa SHOULD be back,to see the end of Comolli, the end of Clarke/Keen(not working) Rafa and Kenny working together to make us unbeatable with Jamie C in the Sammy role and get us moving again!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf only??? YNWA
Even masch ? the one world class player out of those you mention . Centre half for Barcelona . A footballer
ReplyDeletewell i see rafa coming back to liverpool, dont tell me y or when or that he doesnt deserve.....whatever.....i see the end kenny soon, i feel it...and i dont think we have to wait till summer....oh yaa in 3 games we will know his future .....
ReplyDeleteDitto. Definitely not as ordinary and average as Andrew makes out. Top holding midfielder.
ReplyDeleteCome back Raffa
ReplyDeleteHe's only a fat Spanish waiter!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove Jose (2 premier league titles, 1 FA cup, 2 league cups, 2 serieA titles, 1 coppa Italia, 1 coppa del Rey, 2 Portuguese titles,1 UEFA cup and finally 2 Champions leagues)
How do you like them apples:-)
alot of people are forgetting that before giving kenny the full time contract, the rumour was the john henry and co were looking at getting in a young manager.that's why i don't see rafa coming back.
ReplyDeletei reckon there'd be more chance of someone like blanc or rogers.
Jose is like a dog. Whenever he won something he'd move on to a better team. The worst kind of manager that only thinks about himself.
ReplyDeleteand also what he did to the youth system !!!!
ReplyDeleteinter were severely injury ravaged and rafa had no money to spend to replenish / put his mark on the inter squad
ReplyDeletecost how much????????? how do u like ur pie??
ReplyDeleteraffa aint that old. we need someone for ideally the next 10 years say, not 30 years. sir red nose is a one off..................in more ways than one lol
ReplyDeleteJohn W doesn't like Benitez. If Chelsea were going to give him the job, it would have happened last week. He's shot his load in England. His best bet is to sit it out and hope that Real Madrid aren't still pissed off with him when Mourinho leaves in the summer... after winning the Spanish League and Champions League... again.
ReplyDeleteHe has a reputation for blaming everyone else for his failures and publicly fighting the board. As more time goes by, his chances of ever managing in football again diminish.
I JUST WANT TO ADD, THAT IN BENITEZ'S FINAL SEASON WE ENDED THE SEASON LOSING 11 GAMES. THIS SEASON WE HAVE ALREADY LOST 11 AND WE GOT 11 GAMES REMAINING. HAHA.
ReplyDeleteBenitez bought Aquilani that season injured. Torres and Gerrard both struggled with injuries.
Dalglish had Suarez suspended, bought Adam, Downing and Henderson who have stayed clear of injuries. We can throw Carroll in there because hes Torres's replacement. HAHA. Enrique replaced Insua HUGE IMPROVEMENT. WE HAVE PROGRESSED.
WE WON THE CARLING CUP TOO. HOOORAAY.
there is no chance that jose would go to liverpool...just not big enough club situated in a crappy city surrounded by deluded moaning scousers ... benitez would be mad to go back to that bunch of ungratefuls
ReplyDeleteYou conveniently failed to mention that Gerrard has been out injured
ReplyDeletethis season......maybe you should calm down and get a grip, your sarcasm
is boring and predictable just like how we played so often under
Rafa.....
Some perspective is needed i think, lest we take our anger out on the wrong party.......
For sure someone needs to be accountable, the buck stops with the
manager (as it did with Rafa...) but unless we also deal with our squad
divisions we will IMO continue to have problems....
I agree Red. Rafa win his only major trophy with another managers team.
ReplyDeleteWe gave tags time an gradually he lost his way an started isolating players like Alonso. I know the owners were cutting his budget but the football was shocking to watch. Look at AVB at Chelsea, his first 20 games has the same number of wins an draws as Mancini in his first 20 games as manager. AVB did not spend anything like Mancini . Managers need a minimum of two years an you will see a change. Patience pool fans. If Rafa came back it would two more years. Kenny has pool running through his gains. His only weakness is being out of management for a long time so it may take even longer, but please support him Liverpool fans, we have a amazing man who will show why we called him KING all those years ago. I want nobody at this club but him. ..i will three or four years because inside my gut instinct says our club is in the right hands.
Just goes to show once again how inept Rafa can be at getting the best out of the rest of the squad, when he can't/won't use his first XI players. Big injury lists happen but at clubs like Inter, where the squad is big, its a weak mentality to use injuries as an excuse for failure. If a season was about just 11 players and no injuries, Rafa would do fine but its not, its about a squad of players and its down to the manager to utilise the squad to full effect, especially when there are injuries and many games. Which Rafa failed to do.
ReplyDeleteValintino, you have no patience at all. You have given Kk a total, if you include he came in at Christmas, one season to fix a club dying for the last three years. Now after one season you want him gone. On the field, we are playing flowing football, an undefeated at home till recently. One piece of silverware got an in the last rounds of FA cup. What do you want man. Anyone calling for any manager head after a season with the development an changes he is doing, needs to buy some cop on. I have no time for impatience on the level of a school child!
ReplyDeleteRafa benitez family has donated thousands of dollars to hillsbourgh disaster. thank you very much god bless you
ReplyDeleterafa has won champions league and had us in top 4 with the worst owners in world football.
king kenny is our greatest player ever stevie gerrard second kenny is not good manager and stevie g without torres is playing shit this year.
but has help us out of the biggest games in history club legand.
the brand LFC is a world brand not just england world wide the best coaches out there right know are pepe guardiolo the special one and rafa benitez . thats it that all we have to get off this romantic BS with king kenny sorry but true 20mil for english players in the market place is out of touch when has england won trothies in the world stage last. ?????
hes doing a shankley with home grow english me doesnt work football has changed massively
Mainly because he has experience of winning the English premier league, so its a no brainer realy. Do you know he came second once ?? Obviously Mancini won't be able to top that.
ReplyDeleteTell me wat team u support.rick with a silent p
ReplyDeleteTHE CITY OF LIVERPOOL IS FANTASTIC U SHOULD GO THERE WE GO ALL THE TIME IT DIDNT WIN CAPITAL OF CULTURE FOR NOTHING
ReplyDeleteare u joking- liverpool is a medium sized town with people who think the place is the centre of the world. Capital of culture for opening the most coffee shops in bold street!!
ReplyDeleteBut Kenny is a brilliant?....LOL
ReplyDeleteIn actual fact Kenny has been in charge of the 1st Team for over a year.
ReplyDeleteThe Table doesn't lie
Who is John W?..I know one of the owners at Liverpool is John W Henry but who is John W ?
ReplyDeleteWhat squad divisions? Acooding to Kenny he has them as a family unit playing for each other.
ReplyDeleteMitzsu, can you tell us from the Kenny purchases which ones have been an improvement?
Carroll?..Downing ? Henderson? Adam? Tell us how this team is an improvement on Xabi, Mascherano, Riera, Torres.
Before you try and included Bellamy he was signed by Rafa before.
Thus far you have not put up an argument which shows anything about the results and performance improvement.
The philosophy or style of play.
Demonstrate some reason why we should persist in supporting the failed players and manager.
Use some logic
City will implode...Scummers will cruise to Number 20....and we are in free-fall....Nero fiddles while Rome burns.failure to beat Bitters and Stoke could see Dalglish's position becoming untenable
ReplyDeleteBring in Mourinho and Liverpool will win the Premier League year in, year out.
ReplyDelete___Mourinho for restoring Liverpool to the club Legends were cut at!!!
___
Didn't Rafa guaranteed top 4 finish in his final year? He inherited a big 4 team with spine of treble winners, winning him the CL. But 6 years on, we were 7th with the team he built. Second choice striker was Ngog. Enuf said.
ReplyDeleteou should prob rephrase that and say rafa donated donated thousands to the hillsborough victims families.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is not the manager, its the players. Adam, Henderson and Downing can not believe their luck that they are playing for LFC. We need players that will run over hot coals and sweat blood for the cause, sadly we dont seem to have enough of that. Kuyte, JC, SG, Skyrtel and Reina seem to be the only ones with that attitude, oh, and Bellamey the rest seem to be going through the motions and just picking up there massive pay cheques.
ReplyDeleteWe are just in front of Everton and Sunderland and teams like Swansea and Norwich, after what we spent, Gerrard's injury problems is no excuse. There's no perspective that makes our league performances, after that kind of spending, acceptable.
ReplyDeleteNgog scored more goals in his 1st season that Carroll enuf said.
ReplyDeleteRafa WON the CL enuf said.
Rafa WON the FA CUP enuf said
Rafa Went to CL final again enuf said
@df564e64ca29a824918ca77f355a5015 the problem IS the manager it's HIS job to motivate the players. In case you hadn't noticed Kenny bought Adam Henderson Downing and Carroll and before you say Comolli Kenny has final say on all player purchases check the LFC site
ReplyDeleteDidn't say he was or imply he was. Certainly not ecstatic over what KK has done in his second spell in charge of the club that is for sure.
ReplyDeleteKK won almost everything as player, manager and even player cum manager enuf said.
ReplyDeleteKK don't wash dirty linen in the public enuf said.
KK don't ask for ridiculous money every transfer window enuf said.
KK don't give empty guarantees enuf said.
Where are you coming from? Benitez set up the advanced academy the way it is now.He brought back KK to oversee the running of it! Benitez has no fear in that regard - he planned good things for the future of the club! KK let him down by undermining him,but Benitez would never suggest that! The truth is that he would return to Anfield tomorrow if asked, and at least 75% of LFC fans would have him back!
ReplyDeleteThe majority of Liverpool fans, actually make that the majority football fans in general, are idiots though, so that isn't saying much...
ReplyDeleteKK doesn't ask for ridiculous money every transfer window, because he has wasted 100 mil + on garbage (almost half of what benitez got to spend in all transfer windows, not like KK, in one) . No sane person would give him more with this kind of result. enuf said.
ReplyDeleteKK doesn't give any guarantees, cos he doesn't have abilities to fulfil them. Just cos he won a lot in the past as a manager, it doesn't mean that he will be successful now, especially since everyone has moved on, and he obviously has not.
And how does winning cups as a player 20 odd years ago make you a competent manager? Can you see Rooney 20 years later winning Champions league and Premier League as a manager? enuf said
Oh and why don't you talk about 2006, 2007 when he got us 3rd place (how far are we from 3 rd place now?) and of course 2008 when we got 2nd?. Enuf said. Benitez inherited a top 4 squad with spine of tremble winners? If so, then RH and KK inherited top 4 squad that got the highest points and scored the most in the league compared to any Liverpool squad for many many years. Not to mention that squad went to two champions league finals, a carling cup and fa cup final? (and other less important cups)Still want to talk about inhering squads? In 80's who did Daglish inherit the squad from ? Paisley and Fagan. Enuf Said And finally, you complain about a 1.5 mil player, ngog, being a second striker? Then tell me, how is our 35 mil prodigy first team striker performing right now? We also sold ngog for 2 to 3 times his purchasing price. With Caroll, we would be lucky if we get half of what we paid for him. Benitez had a lot of flaws, but seriously, don't use him to make Daglish look better; cos only the opposite will happen.
Under Rafa's time we watched CL football week in week out....all Rafa's funds are from CL prize money....Rafa was not given 110 mil to buy players.
ReplyDeleteIf Jose win a title with Valencia I salute him.....
ReplyDeleteKK was given 110 mil and he bought crabs....
ReplyDeleteReina, Lucas, Agger, Skrtel, Johnson are all signed by Rafa. These are the core players of Liverpool 's defence now. Even Maxi alone score more goals than Hendersen and Downing in total!!!
ReplyDeleteKK is from the past enuf said!!!!
ReplyDeleteKK spent 110 mil to buy crabs enuf enuf said!!!!
KK's solid defensive players are gifted by Rafa enuf enuf enuf said!!!!
During Rafa's time we watched CL football week in week out....more than enuf said!!!!
KK is a legend for what he achieved in the past but Rafa is way ahead of him as manager in modern football. Admit it!!!
ReplyDeletelol enuf said ...there always a few Kenny Apologists who just can't bring themselves to LET GO ...
ReplyDeleteBilbao bought Herrera for peanuts and he is leagues above anything we got. Its not about how much money you can spend, its about how you spend it.
ReplyDeleteRafa brought in a load of dud 'squad players' and/or bought 'squad players' he didn't know how to get the best out of, when he can't/won't use his first XI.
Valencia were hardly a bad side before Benitez took over. The guy he replaced, Hector Cuper, took them to two CL finals. Before Rafa, they already had quality players like Canizares, Ayala, Aimar (who was probably Rafa's most important attacking player at Valencia), Mendieta (though he left in the summer Rafa came in), Kily, Vicente, Baraja, Albeida, etc.
ReplyDeleteJohnson? yay(!)
ReplyDeletekenny was brought in to steady the ship lol,,ohh and 100 million to help him do this lol,,,its kennys fault where in this mess,,to think of the players liverpool could of bought instead of these donkeys ,, carroll downing hendo adam and am sorry saurez as well ,,,complete rubbish we all know how crap carroll, adam hendo and downing have and will continue to be ,,but saurez has been over greedy in front of goal doesnt score enough and after dragging the club through the hole evra thing he too has been a rubbish buy,,holt from norwich is a better goalscorer and doyle form wolves,,,liverpool need a striker like podolski nothing fancy just ball to foot and bang,,and bring back aquliani and cole they are our players after all and are thriving at there current clubs,,ask urself one question do you think ac milan and lyon would loan cole and aquilania for an exchange loan of adam and hendo,,there not good enough for ac milan and lyon so why the fuck are they good enough for liverpool,,,get back on that boat u jumped off kenny last summer and leave lfc in the hands of someone up to date with current football and understands what it takes to get into europe ,,,THANK GOD WHERE NOT IN THE CL NEXT YEAR we have saved ourselfs from a severe hiding...
ReplyDeleteYou didn't read the disclaimer obviously.
ReplyDeletewhat does Gerrard injured this season got to do with anything. He 32 now, I HATE to say it, but he isn't the juggernaut goal scoring freak he was when he was younger, but having said that he is still miles better than anything else we have in midfield besides Lucas. If you havn't noticed he can't put in 100 percent effort anymore. He doesn't have the legs to get interceptions anymore and if he does push it close to the limit he will get injured again which was just what happened last year against Man United. He ran his heart out that day. Just watch him during the match compared to his earlier days, he can't be used as an excuse this season for the bad results.
ReplyDeleteBrought in load of dud squad players? Are you talking about KK?
ReplyDeleteI thought you said Rafa doesn't know how to use his first XI?
ReplyDeleteHe has more assists and goals than Downing!!!
ReplyDeleteTalking about Rafa. Beyond the first XI, he either bought a load of dud squad players or he bought squad players that he failed to get the best out of, hence why he only competed for one of PL and CL, instead of both.
ReplyDeleteThat is not what I said at all and secondly, your point has nothing to do with my point on Valencia, it seems, which is bemusing to say the least.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I shall reiterate my view, Rafa is good with the first XI but beyond that, he has shown time and time again, he fails to get the best out of the rest of the squad quite a lot. So again, I never said Rafa doesn't know how to use first XI. Don't know how you manage to jump to that assumption.
and? Johnson is a defender. Yes, he has been part of our solid defence this season but that doesn't hide the fact that he has made several dodgy defensive decisions yet again this season and in general, is rather mediocre defensively.
ReplyDeleteTHEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS!
ReplyDeletei also believe its the right time to bring rafa back ,lucas levia was laughed at when rafa played him,and now he,s the most missed player,,,rafa brought us arbelloia+ alsono two players who play week in week out for real madrid,,torres was once the most feared striker in world football,,also we had mascho one of the best defending midfielders in the world and captain of argentina,,players like skrtel johnson kuyt sissoko garcia reina viera crouch all great players ok he did buy some crap but we where always going in the right direction,,until the yanks stopped the barry signing and the club was dealing with managment + owner politics and it affected the teams preformances,,this lead to rafa leaving and the beginning of this shambles ,,,to be fair the current owners let the people bring daglish back thinking because there new to football and with the name daglish has it makes sense. everybodys happy new start, lots of funds .fans happy,,fourth spot and cl here we come,,but they are fully aware this current position isnt good enough,,and i do believe daglish is a goner end of may,,if you gave someone 100 million and a team like stoke and newcastle thats spent a quarter of what you spent are beside or above you in the league you would sack the prat that spent it ,,,,and to add insult you find out that the team has only picked up 5 fucking points sense xmas ,,,,i couldnt care less about kenny daglish and what he thinks of liverpool all i care about is liverpool,, THERES A LOT OF DELUDED LFC FANS ON HERE BACKING KD BUT LETS BE HONEST IF THIS WAS ANYBODY ELSE MANAGING LFC WE WOULD ALL BE SINGING FROM THE SAME HYMM SHEET ,,,
ReplyDeleteAwful man manager...just look at how Torres responded...probably an 'awful' Chelsea could do with at the moment.
ReplyDeleteRE: Alonso. What kind of professional footballer whines when the manager wants to add competition to the squad?
A:The kind that don't care for the club.
at least we are the biggest team in our city!!
ReplyDeleteu need to get out more mate and its not because of liverpool fc but liverpool city is amazing we love it and we travel all over the country, and it didnt win capital of culture for coffee shops hahaha silly man.
ReplyDeleteim from durham mate its a lovely little city but we love liverpool we come up all the time for the anfield tours and the shops its great its our second home, love the dock and the shopping,it has a magic in the air at liverpool.
ReplyDeleteLike you have let go of Rafa?
ReplyDeleteYes, good point, we spent 25 million on players that other teams, who have two of our players for nothing, would not take.
ReplyDeleteI think all the signings should be given another season to prove themselves, but without the manager. A good right winger, a decent playmaker and a bit more pace in the team and maybe a new manager will get more from these players than the current coaching set up.
Which Dalglish is laughably trying to take credit for in today's issue of the Guardian!
ReplyDeleteI take back my comment. Gerrard is still a goal scoring freak.
ReplyDeleteChi Bai lu, you are desperate for a job.
ReplyDelete
