Chairman *contradicts* himself over £70m Liverpool striker targets...

Napoli strikers Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi are among the most coveted players in Europe right now, and Liverpool are one of dozens of teams who've enquired about the duo over the last year. A few weeks ago, Napoli Chairman Aurelio Di Laurentis stated publicly that both players are for sale at the right price, but this week, he's said something totally different and contradicted himself.

Liverpool's interest in Lavezzi and Cavani has been widely documented over the last couple of years, with Lavezzi's agent, Alejandro Mazzoni, confirming in 2009 that Liverpool had already made an offer for the Argentinean:

"I reiterate that a Fifa agent presented Napoli with an offer from Liverpool for Lavezzi. This was a formal procedure as the player cannot be contacted directly because he is under contract with Napoli"

After Napoli's recent 3-1 Champions League victory over Chelsea, Di Laurentis made it clear that all of his players are for sale at the right price:

"If they [other clubs] have the money to pay, I am waiting for the offers. If somebody wants to make an offer, we are here to listen. You never to close the door to anyone.

This week, however, Di Laurentis totally changed his stance, and he's now adamant the coveted strike duo are not for sale. He told Radio CRC:

"Every year since I've been in Serie A, there has been speculation about our players, especially Lavezzi...and Cavani. The only person who ever knocked on my door is [Inter president] Massimo Moratti and that was four years ago. He asked if I would sell, but I refused. That's all. We will not sell Lavezzi and Cavani."

Di Laurentis will probably change his tune again next week, but irrespective of whether the two strikers are available, the figures being bandied - £40m for Cavani, and £30m for Lavezzi - are probably prohibitive for Liverpool, and it's doubtful that the club will have the spending power to secure either player.

After this season's capitulation in the league, it's a moot point anyway; why would Cavani or Lavezzi come to Liverpool when they can go to some other top team and play Champions League football?

  4. just further emphasises the argument about 4th - you cannot get these players unless you compete in europe's best competition... unless of course cavani, lavezzi, or hamsik have a burning urge to play in the carling cup!

Not sure many will understand this, but this is the reason 4th is more important winning a domestic competition - the carling cup is irrelevant and just adds to argument that we are now more than ever a fallen giant.

  5. Go away Kanwar - With views like THAT despicable piece of TRASH regarding your supposed OWN club (ha ha what a JOKE that makes you as a so-called fan)  - Anyway with views like THAT? WHO needs enemies - Funny but I could of sworn I saw NOTHING of you or your site when we won the trophy not long back or in the FA Cup last weekend - Yet NOW? You haven't shut for nearly a WEEK - Wonder why THAT is? Odd little fact - Nearly as odd as your so-called argument here - Funny that....................

  7. Its a good point Jamie, we are definitely going to struggle to attract top talent in the summer, no one wants to go play for a terminally underperforming Club that isn't showing signs of progress and isn't in the CL.

The best part of all this is that we have a 35mil striker depreciating in value......along with a handful of overpriced players that are also depreicating in value....in fact i would say that the Club itself has depreicated in value this season....the racist charges etc wouldn't have helped our stock much either.....

Worrying, very worrying considering there doesn't seem to be a way out of this situation that doesn't involve us making even more of a loss in order to change things around drastically, which is probably what is needed......

Once again, i think our owners will be quietly seething behind the scenes....i bet they never expected to have to deal with a setback on this level....its going to take some heavy investment to put our problems right and its going to test FSG to the limit as they know failure to act will see them with a plummeting stock....

I guess for all the wrong reasons it will be "interesting" to see how it all pans out, bizarre season where we could end up with 2 Cups but still be in the doldrums....and still fail to attract more quality players to the Club, whilst losing some of the one's we already have. i recall this time last season when we all looking forward to the summer of investment knowing we had little chance of CL football....

The spotlight will be very much on our owners.... and how much they are willing to commit to this project...

  14. We don't need big money signings at all, the lads are a bit wiser for this season, maybe 2 trophies in the cabinet?. Adam, Lucas, Bellamy, Johnson, Agger, Kelly and Aurelio are struggling through injury, so playing our kids makes good sense.

We need to see more of Sterling, Shelvey, Flano and Robinson,....not to mention Suso, Ibe, Teixeira, Morgan etc. The league games should be used to blood these lads and the FA Cup taken as top priority.

We have been asking for this to happen so don't moan when we lose a game or two doing it, the kids can save us a fortune in cash. We have quality and the academy beat Marseille 2-0 yesterday!!!!

  15. Winning the domestic cups is irrelevant to foreigners. They want to play in the Champions League, so Man U & C and Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, and even Newcastle are ahead of us when it comes to signing quality. Doesn't matter that Arsenal haven't won anything for yeaars, they make a good stepping stone to places like Man City, Barcelona and Real Madrid - ask Nasri & Fabregas.
Also, heavy investment isn't allowed anymore in terms of players. Books HAVE to balance or UEFA don't let you in, that's why Man City have stopped throwing money at it until they can offload Tevez. From this summer, you can only spend what you make, not what the owner has in the bank. That's why despite all the claims to the contrary, I firmly believe Suarez will be gone in the summer, because his spat with the FA/Evra has done (and continues to do) more damage to LFC's Worldwide image than any poor performances on the pitch, making the accumulation of revenue/sponsorship even more difficult.

If you ask Mascherano, Alonso, Arbeloa, Macca and Owen, we're a good stepping stone to Real and Barca too.

  25. I'm sure CL football is attractive but the salaries on offer at City and Chelsea are even more so

  26. Suarez will be gone in the Summer because he deserves to play at a higher level. Whether his departure will attract sponsorship is highly unlikely. Sadly as far as young talented players today  go,the name Kenny  Dalglish means zippo.... As relevant as Nat Lofthouse was to my generation Liverpool need a young vibrant coach with 21st century tactical acumen

  28. The one positive may be no CL may test who wants to play for liverpool and who does not.
No doubt in my mind they can build a great side without spending big or CL football other clubs can do it.
Look at Arsenal dont spend much on transfers and Spurs were able to put together a top side by getting good young players and spending wisely.

  31. Dalglish has basically destroyed the club he supposedly loves for the 3 years... we will have almost no funds to buy players due to his sheer pathetic incompetence and no top players are going to want to come play for us when we have the worst manager in the EPL running the team.. I see us finishing a lot lower next year...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Like the man Madness says/implies, CL qualification more valuable to new players than domestic cups, as well as more valuable to our spending power. Domestic cups is more for existing players, i.e, TRYING to breed winning mentality by winning silverware.

  33. The best players have always been the ones who go to a club to improve it, what better way to inflate your ego and worth.  The players who want immediate champions league success are not the players who have made that impact, they haven't put the work in to get the team to the Champions League.  So they actually aren't as good as the players who took the team there.  That's why 2005 was special, it was a team that qualified for the competition and went on to win it, there were few additions in the previous window and it was the players who'd been there from the qualification period who played the best and won us that trophy.
I wouldn't be comfortable with Liverpool buying players who don't want to be part of a long-term project.

  34. Stop the doom and gloom people. Everything is always a disaster, patience and understanding is required from everybody. I know the internet blogs and journo's would have very little to write about but one step at a time even if sometimes it means temporarily taking a backwards step. With some of the new signings under performing, injuries to key players and only the first full season for the coaching staff to get to know all the players it was always going to be difficult to achieve top 4 status. If you assume City & United will grab 2 of the places, then it's a fight between Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and a surprise contender this season it is Newcastle to grab the remaining 2 places. Why does every one assume it should be Liverpool?

  35. Are u mad??? People seem to remember at Rafa through red coloured spectacles. Yes he was manager in the 2005 CL final (he soon rid himself of the majority of that squad). Don't you remember the terrible negative football, the ridiculous squad rotation and daft substitutions (remember the all scoring Nando being brought off to the dismay of everyone especially Gerrard). Remember the outrageous flirtation with Garath Barry to try and replace THE classiest midfielder in Europe. Poor Alonso only wanted his god given right to be at his wife's side for the birth of his child. Apparently a crime in the Benitez family where you're expected to snub your own fathers funeral for a football game. Don't get me wrong , Rafa wasn't all bad. His love for Liverpool and LFC are evident, but, lets not kid ourselves here. I for one am enjoying the best football Liverpool have played for years under KK. Had those post and cross bar shots gone in (some kind of record) then we would not be moaning about home draws, but challenging at the very top with both sets of mancs. Rant over.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What like AVB or wigan's Martinez? Have you not heard the players talk about the management team currently in place? Dalglish is a world football superstar. Who do you want? Klinsman??? Under KK we are playing the best football in years. We have hit the post and cross bar a record number of times. If they had gone in we'd  be right up there. KK has had to integrate a large number of new players into a club with such high expectations. That won't happen over night or over one season. Keep faith in LFC, KK and the winning ethos of FSG.

  37. P.S. Suarez is going nowhere!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Not sure why Suarez "deserves to play at a higher level" - he & his bad behaviour are part of the reason we find ourselves where we are.  He was banned for 9 weeks which did not help our cause at all.  He should feel morally obligated to stay and help the club improve their status in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "Hitting the post & crossbar" - the fact is they didn't go in and that is down to nothing but incompetent finishing.  With better quality players, most of them probably would have gone in.  According to JW Henry's comments at the beginning of the season, they DID in fact expect LFC to finish top 4 this season and the fact that we haven't, is purely down to poor buying.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The fact is our youngsters didn't even qualify for the final stages of the NextGen Series.  Tottenham withdrew and we were reintroduced by default.  That aside, remember at the beginning of the season when Alex Ferguson started with all the kids, they played exhilirating foootball and were on a real winning streak. Everyone was in awe. It didn't last however - before long they became burnt out and got injury after injury which young Cleverley is still battling to overcome for most of the season now, add to him the Silva twins, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, & Ashley Young etc.  Kids playing at that level are always going to be more prone to injury & thus KD is correct in treating them with kid gloves - they are still growing and need time for their bodies to mature.

  41. Completely agree! No point in being like Birmingham City - winning the Carling Cup but languishing in the Championship! Even if we win the FA Cup as well, I'd hastily trade both for 4th!
