Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates scored a stunning, once in a lifetime goal against QPR the other night, but despite the joy of getting on the scoresheet, the Uruguayan is frustrated about his lack of opportunities to play in the first team since he arrived at Anfield.
Speaking to The Mirror, Coates - who has only made four league appearances since the summer - said:
"I knew when I came to Liverpool that it was going to be hard to play, because it has a huge history.
"Also, we have great defenders here. In fact, there is a Liverpool legend in front of me, Jamie Carragher.
"I had the dream of playing, and I thought I was going to have more opportunities here at Liverpool than the opportunities I am having".
Despite the lack of pitch time, Coates is hopeful that things will change next season:
"I do know that Liverpool trust in me and that I am going to play more matches next season"
He sounds pretty certain that things will be different next season, but what if they're not? If Agger and Skrtel are still at the club, is he going to displace them? After their excellent partnership this season, I can't see that happening.
To be honest, I'm not 100% convinced that Coates is the answer. He's had shaky moments in almost every game he's played for the club so far, and in my view, Liverpool still need to sign another top class, experienced central defender.

Big squad so keep doing it in training, maybe you will get in sooner than you think????
ReplyDeleteWith the Europa League participation next season, Dalglish will have to rotate. So Coates will certainly have a better chance next season of getting some more games, whether it be in PL, FA Cup, Carling and the forthcoming Europa campaign, depending on KK's priorities.
ReplyDeleteI'm not certain either, but, of all the signings, this guy has an excuse for needing time to get used to the league and the team. He's young and he comes from a totally different kind of system. Young Player of the tournament during the Copa America, I think he should have been ahead of Carragher in the pecking order, to be honest, as i cannot see the sense of Carragher getting more playing time if they are approximately at the same level at the moment.
ReplyDeleteChi Bai lu, Coates should be playing now instead of the ageing Carra.
ReplyDeleteI saw him handle Messi, Higuain and co well in last years Copa America.
ReplyDeleteCarra is well past it. Has been past it for the last couple of seasons. He should retire and go into coaching and allow the likes of Coates, Wilson and Wisdom to step up.
ReplyDeletehe isn't playing more because he is Definitely a Comoli inspired signing. IF the lad was British and his name was Phil Jones for example and cost say £16million and was a player Kenny actually wanted....he'd be in the team.
ReplyDeleteThere will always be injuries he will get his chance, jamie is on the way out as well..
ReplyDeletePaul is playing at the legendary centenario in Montevideo and one of the things he wanted to do is watch a football game between nacional and whom ever, i say long leave the king of rock from liverpool...Coates is too much of a player and he will be given his chance to perform, no pierdas la confiansa seb que todo te va a ir muy bien.
ReplyDeleteWhen Coates is only going to play one game and then not play for 20 odd games after that then how is he going to show how good he is?? It would be better to loan him out than waste his talent in bench behind Carra. Brighton could be a good choice as Gus Poyet could help him settle.
ReplyDeleteSince there is nothing to play for in the league, it would be better to play Coates than to play Carragher because Liverpool now need to look at the future.
Agger and Martin....... Kelly.
ReplyDelete21yrs old, new club, new culture, I won't be judging his performances too much this season. Copa America he proved he could be a brilliant player!!! Needs time and doubt all LFC fans will allow him that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't do any worse than poor old carra at the moment!!!
He seems to do a lot right in every game but always has at least one moment of madness. It could just be that this is because he is adapting, like Vidic in his first 6 months at United. It could be that it is just symptomatic of his youth, like Rio Ferdinand who has largely grown out of it. The worse case scenario is that he will be one of these players who always has the potential for a lapse in concentration, like Bramble.
ReplyDeleteOnly one way to find out. I like the look of him so far.
Liverpool are in a transitional phase and Coates is the perfect example of how even the Europa league would have developed our young team and give more time to the like of Shelley and flanno.
ReplyDeleteHe's raw but is an excellent prospect, he'll be ok
