VIDEO: Liverpool FC's new signing Joao Carlos Teixeira in action...

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old attacking midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeia from Sporting Lisbon.

Teixeira will now join the likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Morgan, Suso, David Amoo and countless other attacking youngsters in the youth set-up, where he'll hopefully develop enough over the next couple of years to graduate into the first team.

The chances of that seem slim though - young defenders and defensive midfielders seem to get all the chances at Liverpool; attacking midfielders and strikers hardly ever seem to get chances in the first team.

The youth policy at Liverpool seems to be geared towards favouring defensive-minded players. If the club gave more strikers and attacking midfielders a chance, perhaps we could've unearthed the next Fowler or Owen by now.

Maybe Teixeira can buck the trend? Here he is in action against Liverpool recently in the the NextGen series:

  1. ok so i know we played well at wolves yesterday and i dont want to be negative but why couldnt dalglish have given a couple of youths bench time at least. we had a gk, FOUR defenders, and two midfielders on the bench last night, no forwards. if players like suso, morgan, sterling or silva cant get get on the bench in that situation they never will. we keep wasting talented youngsters and i just wonder when they will ever get some sort of sniff at the bench at the very least. i mean, come on, what is the need for 4 defenders. even 3, which we usually have is too much. ideally it should be 1 gk, 2 defenders, 3 midfielders of sorts and 2 attackers of sorts. defenders are rarely substituted unless its injury or sentimental reasons which i absolutely loath ie. the carragher situation just racking up games for the sentiment of it, but thats a different debate. anyway teixeira looked amazing for sporting when he played against us but i just dont see when he or any other talent will get the chance to shine. one place on the bench at least should be dedicated to a youngster; what is there to lose by doing this. isnt that partly why were allowed seven on bench instead of five like a few year ago?

  2. i meant 2 midfielders/2 forwards or 3 midfielders/1 forward. my maths is clearly terrible.

  3. Good point and i fully agree with it but Shelvey and Coates were on the bench against Wolves and Shelvey got a run in for last few minutes too.

  4. Next year, we will be in Europe cup and all these youngsters will get chance at initial stage. This year, as Kenny is taking League and FA cup seriously, we have nothing left for experiments.

  5. Either LFC is being biased or that is the most one sided 0-3 result i have ever seen. These kids are ready for the first team, they seemed to be totally on top but somehow managed to lose 3-0. They are definitely ready!

Not sure this new guy looks too much better than some of our youngsters, to be honest, but i like the backheel by their striker, hopefully we can get Carroll providing assists like this ;)

  6. No doubt another youth prodigy that will come to te academy, people will upload you tube videos and proclaim he is the next zidane and then what do we do, go and spend loads of money on a 26 yr old who will stop him from getting a game for the next 6 years, so they leave or loose interest and become poor!!!!

  7. The Sporting Lisbon youth team battered our youth team home and away gave them the run around we had chances to score but they all looked ready for first team football a step backwards for the lad going into our youth set up like Pacheo and Bruna found out.

  8. what have we actually spent since these new yanks have taken over ? and before you all jump down my throat im having a go because im as disapointed a liverpool fan as any body else that we didnt get a striker in the window and i suppose people are going to say we dont need one i beg to differ the ones we have are not going to fire us into champions league football this season and at the end of may when we finish 5th or 6th the first thing they will say is we should av signed a striker in janruary it will mean by not gambling on a new striker now will cost the club more money over the next 12 months because the revenue that the champions league brings to the club dwarffs the europa revenue thats all the yanks have done is balance the books since they have been there and the truth of the matter is we have had to sell before we can buy and i find that very disapointing

  9. Some of the kids are just not good enough-sincerely speaking! Sporting proved that against us. Right now, we badly need a trophy no matter how small it is. I'd rather, for now, we let the kids be kids
