Agent: 'No offers' yet for £10m Benfica star who Rafa tried to sign in 2007...

When Rafa Benitez was in charge of Liverpool, he tried to sign Real Madrid's 'B' Team midfielder Javi Garcia. The move didn't materialise, but the Spaniard - who now plays for Benfica - may be available in the summer. Lucas Leiva will hopefully be available at the start of next season, but after such a horrific injury, the club will probably need some back-up to help ease him back into the team, and Garcia would seem to fit the bill.

Benitez's interest in the player was confirmed by Garcia in 2007, when he told The Mirror:

"My colours are Real Madrid but if it's impossible to play there then England is a sensational country and Liverpool is a historic club."

Last week week, Garcia's Agent Manuel Garcia Quilon confirmed 'several Premier League clubs' were tracking the £10m-rated midfielder, and that if a 'good offer' came in at the end of the season, Benfica would consider it.

In an interview with Radio TSF yesterday, Quillon provided the latest update on Garcia's future:

"I cannot say anything as I don't have any information yet. No one has talked to me; There are no offers yet, just rumours."

Liverpool will have to move quickly as Man United and AC Milan are also rumoured to be interested in Garcia.

Do Liverpool need him? At present, I think it's fair to say that there is no reliable, quality back-up for Lucas Leiva. Jay Spearing does his best but is he a viable long-term solution?

Jamie Carragher has played in central midfield, but I'm personally not a fan of player defenders in midfield.

When Lucas returns, he'll need competition for his position, and at present, there isn't really anyone challenging him. And what happens if he gets injured again?

  1. Jay Spearing is defensive midfielder who is back up for Lucas. Liverpool may consider buying another DM only if Kenny does not see any future for Spearing with Liverpool.

  2. Garcia would probably cost more than £10m, closer to £20m mark I reckon.
Not cheap buying from Portuguese sides any more.

I wouldn't be surprised if Real had a option on him (as well as a cut of his next transfer fee, which would make Benfica even more eager to get as much as they can), as that is how they bought him from back from Osasuna as they had a buy-back clause fitted in. I wonder what the odds are on them selling Khedira and bringing back Garcia.

  3. Only reason Spearing is playing for Liverpool is because he is local born, if Spearing was a foreigner he would have been sold long ago. Their is no question about his commitment for the team but their serious question mark about his quality.

  4. We definitely need a new defensive mid, unless we start playing Coady.

  5. Forget about coming to Liverpool, should have come 3 years ago.

  6. We don't need to spend £10 - £20 million on a DM

Lucas will be back, we have more pressing needs such as fast wingers
