Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish stated yesterday that the club would not be buying or selling anyone during the January transfer window. For many fans, that was bad news, but I doubt it's actually true. I'm sure the club is working behind the scenes to try and bring someone in, and Wolves manager Mick McCarthy may have inadvertently confirmed that to be true.
In his press conference ahead of the premier league game with Liverpool tonight, McCarthy revealed that Dalglish had asked him to consider moving the Wolves-Liverpool game to Wednesday night. The game is currently scheduled for Tuesday evening, which is also transfer deadline day. McCarthy said:
"I know Liverpool wanted to play the game on the Wednesday and asked me about it and I said 'no chance'.
"We are going down to QPR on Saturday so why would I play a day later? I want as much time to prepare for both games but I could understand Liverpool's request".
He then went on the reveal something interesting:
"Kenny just asked me because they might be doing something [in the transfer market], and I understood it, but he understand my reasons for not changing".
Based on McCarthy's comments, it seems clear that:
* Liverpool wanted Tuesday evening free to work on bringing in a new player/s.
* Dalglish told McCarthy that he was working on signing someone.
Why else would Liverpool request the match to be moved to Wednesday?
Dalglish always plays his cards very close to his chest so I'm not surprised he made his public denial, but I am sure Liverpool will sign at least one new player before the transfer window closes.
TRANSFER UPDATES
* Jermain Defoe was allegedly spotted at Liverpool's John Lennon airport earlier today, and 'Defoe to Liverpool' is currently trending on Twitter.
Someone who works at JLA tweeted:
"I'm working in Liverpool airport and have just seen Jermain Defoe being rushed into a waiting car. Praying he's going to Melwood."
I wouldn't mind seeing Defoe at Anfield, but ex-Liverpool players Ray Houghton and Gary Gillespie don't agree, with Gillespie recently describing Defoe as 'The poor man's Fernando Torres'.

Let hope it a cheap but quality signing.
ReplyDeletePersonally i don't think the yanks will give kk any more to spend...the only way to spend for kk is to sell and buy.....
ReplyDeleteNow kk and everybody will find out what Rafa had to go through..
Been lurking around other sites and rumours have it Comolli had meetings in Manchester, Newcastle, Chelsea and Holland. Don't know how much Kenny is privy to and he certainly seems to think the squad is adequate, but it's Comolli's job to be dissatisfied with the squad and constantly work on signings to make. I'm sure if Kenny wants someone, Comolli would look at signing him, but at the same time, as long as Dalglish doesn't say no, Comolli will just go about signing whoever he likes.
ReplyDeleteNoticed that yesterday on Sky sports. Smoke and mirrors.
ReplyDeleteNaw, doubt it....KK asked because he wanted the extra day's rest for the team after recent exertions. Nothing to do with transfers methinks.
ReplyDeleteBeacsue we played on Saturday. Only two full days rest? Makes sense does it not?
ReplyDeleteMaybe KK just wanted another day's rest for the team after playing both Manc teams in four days.
ReplyDeleteIf it is the case, wishful thinking I think, then I'll eat my hat... Fortunately I bought it from Lady Gaga so it's all meat products.
ReplyDeleteMcCarthy said Dalglish wanted the extra day 'because he wanted to do something'. What do you think that means? It has nothing to do with an extra day's rest. If that was the case, he would've said that.
ReplyDeleteI think there'll be a signing to be honest, and I think he's said nothing's happening so that there is no disappointment if there is noone, or maybe so that there's noone watching or competing while we slip under te radar. Comolli and Kenny can quietly get on with things without being asked repeatedly. Just my thoughts anyway.
ReplyDeleteNothings gonna happen. Its weird how we all love Kenny and hang on everything he says. Unless its that we arent signing anyone. Then suddenly people wont believe him. Turn off SSN, we arent involved!
ReplyDeleteAnd McCarthy would happily give him extra day so that he faces rested and better prepared liverpool team!
ReplyDeleteI would welcome Defoe. Quality signing!
ReplyDeleteOn no! NOT Defoe!
ReplyDeleteAs KopKing59 has said above, I reckon King Kenny has used this as a ploy to get an extra day's rest after the two cup games against United and City. However, I Jaime, I hope you're right.
ReplyDeleteRumours have it that Defoe is signing. But I would love it if we did a West Ham and managed to get Mascherano and Tevez on loan. Mascherano apparently has only played 5 games so far for Barca, so maybe a possibility?!?!?! I'm clutching at straws by the way, but we can only dream!
I would rather Liverpool don't sign anyone or promote someone from academy like Eccelstone or Morgan than signing Defoe, though i would love to see Tevez on loan or De Jong too would be good signing.
ReplyDeleteDefoe is cuptied so what use will he be,he will be bought like last years panic buys for an outside shot of CL football.Defoe wont fit in hes almost 30,he gets photographed with women off big brother with a big grin showing his gold teeth like a pimp, proud of the fact hes getting sloppy seconds after someone else has been there a few hours before,if he arrives at LFC thats the end, finished.
ReplyDeleteWHY DON'T YOU GROW UP GET OVER RAFA, FSG HAVE NOT SPENT ANY MONEY ON PLAYERS. THE MONEY CAME FROM THE SALE OF PLAYERS AND THE MASSIVE WAGE BILL LEFT BY RAFA BEING CUT BY 30 MILL A YEAR BY KENNY
ReplyDeleteGood point
ReplyDeleteThis latest rumour simply defoes, sorry, defies belief. Wasn't he number 25 on the rumour mill, or was it 27? I am rapidly losing the will to listen to/read any more speculation. Hopefully, Jaimie, once the transfer window has finally shut you can get back to your previous worthy standard.
ReplyDeleteAdrian
ReplyDeleteDo not even bother mate, Mali341 claims he is a "die hard fan". I have told him on numerous occasions to go support another team.
I gurantee there wont be a major signing at Liverpool tonight... 'because he wanted to do soemthing'. Do you think Dalglish is going to discuss transfer dealings with another EPL manger?? That would be crazy!! Its not the Liverpool way in anycase McCarthy already said he didnt want to move the game back as they are playing away on Saturday, we are not playimg until Monday. Dalglish has been going on about our schedule al season. If im wrong ill hold my hands up, but cant see anythinhg happening.
ReplyDeleteIm not being funny but they came to Anfeild and Won last season, they must fancy thier chances at home when you consider the form we have been in this season.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Surely Ecclestone should be in around the squad?
ReplyDeleteI think we need him for the leauge in all honestly. We can beat any team on our day which is why i think well be fine in the cup. Surely we need need goals for CL qualification? We dont have a proven goalscorer in the team.... JD is in that mould!
ReplyDeleteKenny trying to scam an extra day's rest
ReplyDeleteSky scamming football public all over again today, with the old generate a rumour trick, claim the price has collapsed on a Defoe move, now 1/5, get a flood of bets, only for deal not to happen
Con men!!!
Do 'something'...... Resting is something is it not? I'm not saying we are or are not gonna get anyone in..... But don't be condescending to us true supporters by belittling their comments!
ReplyDeleteI don't think he would have said that. Why give the opposition manager the heads up that you need more rest for the game? Tell him a fib that its for some transfer stuff and it might be more believable.. Who know? I certainly don't and neither do you.
ReplyDeleteConsider your "proof" debunked.
Yep, Defoe is on his way to Anfield - along with Beckenbauer, Cruyff, the entire Brazil World Cup team of 1970 and anyone else you can think of.
ReplyDeleteNext you'll be saying kenny didn't sign the players either it was comolli ..you believe what you want but the fact is if there was money available kk would buy..
ReplyDeleteYou have missed the other possibility, maybe someone was heading out.
ReplyDeleteAlright Charlie ...you are the real fan...the only problem is your deluded
ReplyDeletewot you two arguing over you basically agreeing with each other
ReplyDeleteDefoe is 1/5 to sign to liverpool if u have seen zaha is in london
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's because he is trying to offload someone.
ReplyDeleteI hope it is NOT defoe! I thought there was consensus that we needed to shop abroad a bit and get a few bargains. i am sure we couldv got a Malouda or Kalou dirt cheap to compete with the likes of Henderson, Adam and Downing. I am super chuffed Kenny brought in a goalie...please start to groom the youngster to get rid of Pepe...who has become a serious liability IMO and I question his commitment to the cause and he is half the quality of the likes of Joe Hart. A good goalie as Hart has shown...can make the difference in many games. Jaimie i suggest one day you do an article on how the process of buying players works at LFC. I find it strange that the scouts would buy or show interest in players without Kenny's say so. Surely the manager is supposed to state first what type of players he is interested...or the scout could suggest a player...but any players bought the manager should have the final say.
ReplyDeleteSay What?
ReplyDeleteGo eat that humble pie of yours and for the last time, go find another team to run down.
what???? Hart is twice the player Reina is? You have got to be kidding me!
ReplyDeleteUr a joke mate. Shit journalism
ReplyDeleteTotally agree , miss rafa as he was not given a fair chance
ReplyDeleteSo no Cavani, no Hazard, no one ... as expected.
ReplyDeleteI still regret LFC letting Meireles go, we would have been at least 5 points up with him in the team, it could have meant LFC gets some of those draws in to wins.
Defoe and Torres are totally different players and I'd say Torres would rank higher as a striker but JD is no poor mans anything... bring this transfer on pleasure doing business - I just don't think it's true.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that anyone would argue that based on McCarthy's comments there could be some transfer action.. makes sense to me anyway
learn how to spell ... you're deluded, not your deluded. if you can't spell, don't post. it's embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the team needs an additional day's to recuperate? The next game against Spurs is only on Monday. We already played on 25 then again on the 28, both against difficult opposition...
ReplyDeleteAlso you wouldn't know when Kenny made that request, it might be weeks before, because of TV broadcast. One thing for sure, it is definitely before Kenny made the comment of no transfer activity at senior level...
As accurate as normal Jaimie ;)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant journalism. What a fantastic one-man-show you run over here, Jamie.
ReplyDeleteEvery stop to think he asked for a delay in order to give his players a rest?
I can't believe you still get companies advertising on your site, they should take a read of the rubbish that you post. Pure sensationalism.
PS Adding 'imo' after every speculative sentence does not make it a valid opinion, nor does it allow you write pathetic headlines for your 'articles', which by the way, read like nothing more than a school girls blog.
Think it's quite clear in my mind that Kenny wanted the game moved cos we don't play out next game until Monday. That would therefore have given us an extra day before the wolves game and we'd still have plenty of time before the spurs game. I don't believe it had anything to do with the transfer window at all.
ReplyDeleteI also don't see where it's quoted that Dalglish told McCarthy they will be signing someone. It says they MIGHT be doing something.
Purely spculative this piece, which isn't your norm Jaimie.
In the end proves that nothing was doing anyway. I'm sure Comolli would have been doing the deals as Kenny had the game.
Liverpool-Kop. KopTalk. It's so difficult to split the two.
ReplyDeleteThis article counts for shit now doesn't it? "Persuasive proof" indeed.
ReplyDeleteWould be surprised if Kenny were any more open with other managers than he is with the press. I reckon that he might have just wanted another day's rest for the team after Saturday, seeing as their next game is not until Monday.
