LAWRO claims: "Massive rumours" in Liverpool that striker deal is 'done'...

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has claimed that Liverpool are very close to sealing a deal to sign Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 last night prior to Liverpool's game with Man City, Lawrenson told Mark Pougatch that there were 'massive rumours' in Liverpool that the deal to bring Bent to Anfield was 'already done'.

Given Lawro's status as en ex-Liverpool player, it's probably likely that he has access to inside info when it comes to LFC, so I'm inclined to believe what he says.

Villa manager Alex McLeish has not closed the door on anyone leaving Villa in the January transfer window, as his latest comments in the Sunderland Echo show:

"I'm not willing to sell anybody at the moment but you don't know what will happen.

"We've had one or two phone calls about a couple of players. I wouldn't be tempted to lose any of the strikers - strikers make the difference in this league."

  2. Talk of Carlton Cole going to Villa!

  3. Kennys last roll of the dice. ..after he and damo both said bent was not suitable, and a 'loan wolf'. more moneyball rubbish. (see downing+adam).

    ReplyDelete
  4. not happening. why would he want to join a team with a proven racist amongst them?

  5. A lot of fans may question this move if it does indeed occur. The money involved would be high as Villa paid a large fee just last January.

Considering we have a clear issue with finishing, (this Liverpool side is the worst in front of goal for many years and has the lowest conversion rate in the Prem) I would say this is a positive move if the rumour turns out to be true.

The issue is who else is available that REALISTICALLY would join ? Likes of Higuian , Cavani , Villa are not going to join us in our current state.

I think we could tempt Valencia in to selling Soldado but it comes down to the player, I dont think he will join with the Euros around the corner as he is playing well in Spain so dont think he would gamble on a move to LFC and jeoparadise his place upfront which he may land given Villa's injury and Torres form at present.

Bent scores goals, we need goals, it makes sense if we have the cash

  6. The thing is we are creaing alot of chances but we are not puting them away and have you seen darren bents record? he would score alot of goals away for us.. At the moment we are wasting to many. carroll isnt fast enough but with bent he is fast and he will lick up with suarez brillantly when he comes back...

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rowan if I remember rightly they were saying he was not suitable as a partner for Torres whereas Suarez was

    ReplyDelete
  8. maybe russ, however i read it as that bent was only good on his own.

  9. Comolli said Bent wasn't suited to Playing up with Torres as they both have similar styles. Now Torres has gone he could play up top with Suarez. I'd prefer a more technical player tbh

  10. so downing was bought to bring the best out of carroll, and now bent has been bought to bring the best out of downing. maybe we should buy young from manure and, why not throw in gabby A from villa while were at it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @rowanblades. shut up we need a powerful striker with pace who will link up well with Downing,Suarez,Gerrard and can even run onto balls when Adam,/Gerrad put the ball over the top for bent..

    ReplyDelete
  12. Adam and downing will never make it at LFC. henderson needs time and carroll needs a miracle.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It is the rumour that won't go away and of course he is black, which will go some way to show the world Liverpool is not a racist club despite the best efforts of the FA to show it is. Bent and Carroll up front in a 442 for the next 7 games may prove to be the way forward and take the focus of Carroll and more on Bent especially if he signs for a big fee. I fully expect to see Kuyt moving on in this window to make way for a big signing, although I was expecting it to be for a creative midfielder.

  14. Bent and carroll together ? hmm

  15. U really are a despicable French cunt.

  16. @Rowanblades. Adam has done plenty of assist this season and chiped in with a few goals. downing he in the right postion but luck isnt on his side. let them settle down look how city were when they first brought their players... it took them a whole season to settle down...just see what next seasons brings liverpool all this season objective is, is to get Championsleague...

    ReplyDelete
  17. i hope these players come good as much as anyone, but i am not feeling downing and adam at all. neither are LFC quality and neither would get anywhere close to other top sides. downing was a big fish in a small pond, same for adam. enrique =top notch, henderson=great potential for the future but those other 2 i just don't see ever being good. not compared to silva/mata.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Rowanblades have you seen adam's driving force from the back to front? he and lucas has a brillant partnership in the middle of the path. an let them all settle down. they be good! trust in your team players!

  19. Why would any club buy this mercenary?
Fell out with Harry at Spurs
Came to Sunderland and wanted away after 1 year
Stayed another half season during which he was less than impressive(to say the least)
Forced a move to Villa and now seems to be doing the same to them
    Where to next year?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Adam has not done anything to impress me. when he goes off and stevie me comes on, we transform. adam is never going to be world class like alonso or gerrard, he's a sub at best, and slow. sorry but im not buying into adam love. his set pieces have been woeful. its not about blind faith, im going on gut feeling. if rafa  had spent money as wastefully as kenny has, the knives would be out. apart from enrique+luis which one of kennys  buy's has made us a better team? honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  21. He scored 2/3 goals his season he been unlucky too with most of his shot's an class like alonso and gerrard? alonso started to peak at age 26/27 for us and he got settled into liverpool side since he was 23 adam has only been here half of season an got 4 assist and 2/3 goals thats not bad for a player who cost7 million?

    ReplyDelete
  22. No one has been proven as a racist, please read the reports on the issue and then you might understand it. But I doubt it as you are probably a sun reader with no brain.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 4 our type of f"ball bent will suit us more than ac...... it's a mistake that kenny have 2 lift.... imagine if this mistake made it another manager..... we have 2 look forward..... sent ac back 2 n,castle and i,ll take a gamble with bent

  26. so disappointed in downing last night come up against quality pacy full backs in richards and clichy and didn't want to know, ran up to them stopped and passed backwards, crossing all night was awful never beat first defender all night and people have a go at carroll, please.....

  27. Why come to a liverpool site to talk utter crap?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Kenny will turn Liverpool into a midtable team, if Bent is the signing he considers to be world class. I won't be surprised if Liverpool finished 6th this season because team is not good enough to be in top 4 and with signings like Bent it will fare no better. If Liverpool don't finish in top 4 at the end of the season, i would love for owners to give Kenny the sack. But till the end of season i will support Kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The crossing wasn't even awful, it was non-existent. He didn't manage to put in one cross all game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think the summer spending has been a disaster and it seems to continue with clueless KD & Commoli pulling the strings!
    Henderson - 20m
    Downing - 20m
    Carroll - 35m
    Adam - 7m
    Total 85m thrown away!
The only decent transfers have been:
Suarez, Enrique and Bellamy at a total cost of 30m
Now we are linked with Bent???
    WTF?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Alonso has always had a low assists return but he played as a deep lying playmaker. So his game isn't about assists. Assists aren' t the be all and end all for central midfielders, especially of the deep kind. So I'm not getting carried away with Charlie Adam's assists return as its his overall game that needs to be looked at. Silva doesn't have a big assists return this season but he is miles better. Just goes to show assists aren't the be all and end all when judging central players.

  33. Patrice evra-piss of to a manc site!!!!

    Now to the bent rumours..
Id take him but for the right price, which should be a lot less than the £24 million villa paid for him.

I cant see it though hes nearly 28 now, dosent fit in with FSG's transfer policy..

Id prefer the club to make a big bid for benzema ( maybe im dreaming ) or give morgan a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let's be fair the prices you are quoting are all media related we don't know what the final figures are or the bonuses that are attached, nor the salaries these players are not.

Henderson - has done very well for a 20 year old. Let's remember he is captain of the under 21 & 23 squads, and is on the cusp of the National side. He has arguably been one of our better players the last month or so and has shown huge improvements from the start of the season.

Downing - I have tried to defend but I am starting to lose faith. He is really lacking in confidence. His pace , passing , crossing , positioning has all been poor. I hope he can turn it around because last season at Villa he was brilliant.

Adam - is a 6m pound player....because of Lucas and Gerrard's injuries he has played more than he should have & I assume more than what Kenny would have liked. He is what he is , when he is playing well he can be great but he does lack pace and at times his general game intelligence is very very poor

Carroll - is a old school CF , if he gets bad service he looks awful and lets be honest our wide play this year has been very poor. He is never going to be a 30 goal a season striker but with the right service and support he has the natural ability to be very good for Lfc. But without the right players we will never seen the best of Carroll....if he were at Spurs he would be unplayable because of all their other weapons.

Bent is not one of my favorites , but in theory his poaching ability and pace could help Carroll...but I would much rather try to put more flair, pace and creativity in the side...maybe:

    Stevan Jovetic
    Loic Remy
    Leandro Damaio

2 of those 3 would be nice.

  39. I hate to say this but Kenny is turning into another Rafa Benitez, who didn't want to learn from his mistakes .We have already spent heavily on average players expecting them to turn into world class in a couple of seasons, don't blame the owners they have given full support but the "buy British" formula is just not working and Kenny somehow does not want to understand that .I won't be surprised if we finish 6th this term as well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Haven't we bought enough english or should I say british championship material, (at scandalous prices) players?. We do NOT need another Downing from Villa, or Newcastle (Carrolls), for that matter!!!.We need Suarez's QUALITY and not donkeys!.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Spot on!. Only Henderson will eventually make it, the other three scandalous buys will never be other than average!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just see what next season brings???.....YAWN!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wrong. You are entitled to your opinion.....but please take them blinkers off.

    ReplyDelete
  44. There's absolutily NO comparison between Adam and Alonso, it's like comparing a donkey with a top racehorse....and that is a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So what formula works, buy foreign, buy British??? Come on...Suarez, Henderson, Enrique are all good to great buys. Adam was playing very well till a few matches ago....Downing is still to find his feet but he is low on confidence....I bet some of you are those that lambasted Lucas, and now you are crying that he is injured

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was hoping all those transfer bout downing, hendo, carroll and adam last summer wasn't truth but i was so so disappointed and now is bent,i'll be keeping my finger cross and pray every night that this isn't gonna happen.

  48. I see the palest shade of Red here. What's the difference between the football dominating reds of old and now? The 12TH MAN. Back then the fans were a force to be reckoned with, the 12th man on the pitch that gave the team the edge. Now? Get my point?

    ReplyDelete
  49. rafa benitez bought average? O_O

reina johnson skrtel agger aurelio alonso mascherano lucas luis garcia torres kuyt

this is a starting lineup of benitez's transfers. this team can easily beat man citeh yesterday.

stop taking a swipe at the man who is arguably our 5th best manager after shankly, paisley, fagan and dalglish in our history.

    ReplyDelete
  50. been doing that for 20 years. it getting painful now.

    ReplyDelete
  51. must admit, would of been curious to see what benitez would of spent 100mill on. i truly don't think we would have the same players here.    although he did buy a few stinkers too!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Buying a player because he is black is no better than doing precisely the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i really do fail to see peoples problem with us signing bent, his goalscoring record speaks for itself, he is a natural finisher, something we havent had since , dare i speak his name, owen. he scores where ever he has played even at spurs where he didnt get a great deal of games he still scored goals. he plays well off the last defender and makes intelligent runs in behind the back line something which we dont currently have and while i am actually a fan of Big Andy and think that he will come good it is advisable to have an alternative especialy with suarez now missing for 8 games. quite simply the people on here who claim bent is not good enough do not have a clue about his abilities and have possibly never seen an entire game of football played anywhere at any time.

    ReplyDelete
  54. wel said and absolutly right these are the same people and i am sure that once again they will all be proved wrong, as with lucus, and then claim they never said a bad word against him and that they always said that he would come good....i believe the term is arm chair fans who base their decisions on players based on a ten minute segment of their team on match of the day

    ReplyDelete
  55. Patrice Evra:

You are being provocatively stupid and you know it. By the way, stupid, if you're caught making statements using someone else's name, you could be sued.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Fuck rafa wills ye ever give over

    ReplyDelete
  57. lol prob right either that or soccer manager fans

    ReplyDelete
  58. you would hate him to be in the top four

    ReplyDelete
  59. So he signed 12 good players in 6 years, give him a fucking medal, how many shit players did he buy let's see Carson, josemi, kronkamp, palletta, dossena, gonzales, nunez, voronin, intanje, morientes, pennant(no better than downing),or riera, insua+ many more that are so bad i can't even remember them. Now i liked benitez + agree withyour 5 placing but he wasn't the messiah some of you seem to think he was, he made LOADS off transfer mistakes which no doubt would have been less if he had more money but still in 6 years we had about 2 months of actually believing we might win the league, now i have good memories of his time here but to put him on some god pedastal just ain't right

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm can't believe that they're continuing with this highly dubious transfer policy. You don't catch the teams above you by overpaying for players that they wouldn't touch with a barge pole. We finally got some money to spend and we might as well be setting it alight at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Or turn out to be like Pongolle, Tallec, Cheyrou, N'Gog, Leto, Pennant, etc.

But fine, keep your rose-tinted glasses on.

    ReplyDelete
  62. He is a finisher for a non-big club sides. The one good side he went to during his career was Spurs but he didn't fit in as the attacking expectancy is more and opposition teams play more deeper, the bigger the club they play usually.

Against big clubs, teams play deep. Strikers of Bent's type rely heavily on playing on the shoulder and getting behind defences. Those kind of strikers are getting less and less at big clubs now.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Haha you bloody idiots, whats wrong with buying English, Bent is a proven goal scorer, a full international, experienced and only 26 and you have a problem with Pool buying English? Lets not forget the chance of us having to field a certain number of Englishmen is rising too. Ever been to Anfield, no I thought not!

    ReplyDelete
  64. did not rafa want to sell alonso? and buy barry? i love alonso, but did not always light the world a fire. patience is what is needed, ala Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  65. On top of that, we don't have good wing play here either (that is what Spurs and United have, very good wing play. That allows the likes of Defoe and Hernandez to be effective to varying degrees).

So it is a odd one, the Bent suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What's wrong with buying english??, you say. Which planet, have you descended from?, Adam?, Carroll?, Downing?.

We paid scandalous money for these three donkeys, with no tactical awareness at all, Adam, miles away from Alonso, fact! Torres vs Carroll?, Downing?. Go and concentrate on CRICKET!!!

piss of manc and by the way it wasn't proven! or he would be going to court like john terry you muppet

    ReplyDelete
  69. After KD's simply dreadful signings so far, I'm amazed they trust him with any more money. On the credit side - anybody he signed would have to be better than the lot he bought last summer. And can someone explain to me why people defend Henderson? The guy is useless!

    ReplyDelete
  70. what a ridiculous comment, everyone you have mentioned were un-proven with exception of pennent, who by the way i actually rated as aplayer and still do, there arn't many wingers in the league who can cross the ball as well as he can but apart from him the others were all young and un proven players who we took chances on and didnt work out. darren bent on the other hand is a proven premier league goal scorer. if you are going to argue a point at least make it poinuant.....what an idiot and exactly the sort of person we are talking about, do yourself a favour keep your pathetic, baseless and frankly childish comments to yourself, fans like you we can do without.

    ReplyDelete
  71. another stupid comment, you should really keep quiet. the epl is the best in the world because of the lack in gulf between sides. this big club/little club mentality is only something which armchair fans and the media play to because they know no better and can sell stories. bent has scored for every team he has played for even at spurs where he wasnt a first teamer, when called upon he played and scored against all clubs at all levels. the nly person you should be annoyed with is yourself for being so damn short sighted.

    ReplyDelete
  72. i'm betting we will sign a winger in january so that will be that problem solved and gerrard being back will be massive because he can deliver a ball better that 90% of wingers in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I 100% agree with you, I have never rated Adam he isn't good enough he couldn't even make it at Rangers and even
I would of done well at Blackpool so that just shows you how poor a player he really is. I have also never rated Downing and I always knew signing him was always going to be a big mistake same as Carroll. I also don't want Bent ether as he isn't what we need and Bellamy is the only good British player that Kenny has signed and I think that Henderson is the only other player that is most likely to make it at L.F.C

    ReplyDelete
  74. Lucas is a BRAZILIAN,  Carroll, Adam and Downing are BRITISH=Donkeys!!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. We have very few british players, who are quality, that is why KD needs to alter his 80's way of thinking, the game has moved on, and so should KD.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Henderson will come good, take my word, but with the other three?, Carroll,Adam,Downing............we need a miracle of massive scale!.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Some rubbish spouted on here today. It's all well throwing names around that you play as on FIFA or sign on champ man, or have read are good and have a fancy name, but how many don't work out? Schevchenko, Stanic, Crespo, Dzeko, Morientes and I'm sure there's more but these are all players unproven in the prem and would have or did get our fans excited. Bent has a proven record, and consistent in the prem. he has scored everywhere he has been, from a big club (spurs) to a smaller club like charlton. The amount of times we've needed a player to tap the ball in from 5 yards or less this season an they have failed tells me that Bent would be a great option that would work out. I am a fan and go to most games and I understand about people saying some fans wear rose tinted glasses but the amount of fickleness on here is shocking. Calling for Kennys head etc, tells me you don't get to many games where you see the bigger picture, not ten minutes on match of the day. I also saw most games when Hodgson was in charge, and trust me, we're improving. We're a few points behind Chelsea and arsenal, not bad considering one clubs spending throughout the years and the others excellent management an stability. GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM AND BE THE TWELTH MAN! Confidence is missing from certain players, give them it back.

    ReplyDelete
  78. We need to get some better talent scouts if we think Bent is the best option for us as a striker. Mind you, I think we need to bet better scouts anyway if all they got for the 112 million spent in the last 12 months are the likes of Carroll, Downing, Henderson, Adam - and still no better than 6th spot.

Bent has scored only 6 goals all season - not much better than Suarez.

We should be looking at form players like Ba or even Sturridge. Ba has 14 to his name and Sturridge 9.

Tears come to my eyes when I think about how Chicarito has scored 3 times the goals of Carroll this season for a fifth of the price.

More importantly, they are players who know how to position themselves in the box to score - unlike so many of our current crop who seem almost afraid to run into the box (or, if they do, are always positioning themselves poorly).

    ReplyDelete
  79. please no bent for gods sake overpriced dud,why does no manager want to keep him

    ReplyDelete
  80. You get agitated quite easily don't you. Your posts says more about you negatively, than it does about the poster its aimed at. Grow up. Resorting the armchair jibe like some retarded broken record.

He has got a fair point about Darren Bent's style and possible tactical issues

Its no secret that his all-round game isn't great, even for a striker. Its no secret he plays on the shoulder of defenders. Its no secret that most of his goals have come for small teams. Its no secret that if you cut off the supply to him, he isn't really any good. Its no secret that he is better at playing against high line defence, which most teams don't do against top teams. Its no secret that we have no real penetrative wing play from either wing.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Lucas wasn't proven when we bought him, just like Tallec and co mentioned in that post.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yet another hot-headed comment from you. You can't take people having different opinions. Stop being such a girl and grow up.

Pennant? He is good for a mid-table team but a big side, he isn't below par. If you think he is good, you must have thought Riera was the next Maradona. Ryan Taylor crosses far better than the shit we have had to put up with at Anfield for the last decade from our so-called wingers and still Ryan Taylor is below par.

Darren Bent is a proven goalscorer for mostly small teams. He weren't Spurs cup of tea because he isn't first XI material for big club or clubs with ambitions to make it to the top.

    ReplyDelete
  83. He was top scorer in his last season at spurs, top at Sunderland, top at charlton, joint top at Villa despite being there for only half a season. His strike rates nothing short of prolific an you can say he's not a Liverpool type player etc, but at the minute a Liverpool type player first put the ball in the net. Bent does. He's never had the level of service he could get at Anfield, an has managed all of those goals. Get him signed, he will do the business. Oh an He's not even 27 yet so hardly past it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. driving force, what a joke, he runs around giving daft free kicks away and playing the occasional 40 yard pass. where are these £10million corners and set pieces gone.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The fact of the matter is bent would get 25+ goals guaranteed for a decent side like liverpool, look who hes played for where hes been feeding off scraps whereas at liverpool he would have clear cut chances. If you cant see how good he would be for your team then ur just dillusional, take england as an example of how he fits into a team that creates chances it must be something like 3 quarter goals a game

    ReplyDelete
  86. All for getting a striker in but not Bent. As Barnes said, thrives on space in behind and lacks the quality to be a force if people park the bus which has been the problem for us. He would improve the squad but the cost would be sky-high and he isn't worth that kind of money comparably. He apparently has the lowest touch per game ratio in the league of any outfield player. He's not even the best tap in merchant. He has about 3 goals this year. Nothing wrong with buying British but it has to be the right British.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Let's face it, the way we are playing and setup we would struggle to score goals even with Torres back at our Club in his prime. Bent will be useful in leading the line which Carroll has so far struggled to do. In Suarez's absence we definitely need a striker with pace that has a proven ability to score. Unfortunately in this January window he is probably the best we can get. A quick fix if you will. Signing Brazilians are quite often tricky with the laws we have in England and can often be risky. Unless we can sign somebody of Tevez, Aguero type caliber we will not really fix the problem.
On the other hand I will like us to sell Kuyt and go for a creative winger. As good as he has been for the Club, recent matches show that he has lost that tireless aspect, ability to retain the ball and even awareness. Maybe he lacks match fitness due to the fact that he has been on the bench quite a lot of late. Players like Lucas and Shaquiri may only be available in the summer. I’m afraid chances of getting into the top 4 is rapidly declining with the top 2 spots reserved for the Manchester Clubs, Spurs probably getting 3rd and 4th to be slogged out between Arsenal, Chelsea and us. I can only hope Spurs implode in the 2nd half of the season but the rate we are going we won’t be catching or overtaking them even if they do.

    ReplyDelete
  88. your the fool, whats wrong with buying english/british well just look at the following:

Downing the guy every time he get the ball he goes backwards and passes to glen jonhnson who is a much better winger then him. He is useless. (18mil..laughs on us)

Carrol need i say more. (35mil..laughs on us)

Henderson i won't even go there. (20mil..laughs on us)

Adam he is so slow in every way he makes a snail look like as fast as F1 car (8mil..laughs on us)

Why he keeps playing spearing i'll never know maybe these players will make a good westham side or somthing but not liverpool.

Now this idiot for 24mil its a joke beyond a joke.

You know what the main fact is mate when was the last time England/Wales/Scotland/Irland won anything in football.

Look i got nothing against British player when they are in the same caliba as your Gerrad, Carra,Giggs.  But the idiots we're buying are nothing more then a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  89. As for people slating Rafa's purchases, first of all Le Tallec, Pongolle and Cheryou were bought by Houllier. Others like Ngog, Kyriagkos were stop plugs bought for 1 million or next to nothing because the previous owners pulled the plug on funds and were running us into bankruptcy with the debt they piled onto the Club. Leto actually would have been quite decent if he was able to get a working visa in England but sadly he couldn’t, resulting in him being shipped out to Greece and I can name a whole list of players we missed out on and had to settle on 3rd/4th choices.
Prick Parry, the ponderous, procrastinating clown who was in charge of making the purchases was also directly responsible in Rafa missing his 'First choice players’ because the number of times he stalled on the deals. This was then followed by Christian Purslow who many say undermined Rafa in the latter years. There was too much politics going on behind the scenes but it has to be stated that we would probably have won the league if we had the current owners backing Rafa in the transfer market and helping him get his ‘First choice’ targets. We may have seen the likes of Christiano Ronaldo, Jovetic, David Silva, David Villa, Juan Vargas, Vidic, Daniel Alves, Modric just to name a few of the players our scouts discovered first only to be beaten by other clubs due to a lack of funding or backing. We could have signed Alves and Ronaldo for 12 million but for Parry and Sillva was practically a done deal until the owners pulled the plug.
Anyway as it was we had to go for the likes of Dossena, Palleta, Insua, Kromkamp and Mark Gonzalez that were ultimately failures. But it should be noted that many were moved on and quite a lot of money was recouped.  Morientes was also a failure but there is not a manager out there who has not had players that just didn’t work out. Rafa’s costly purchases on the most part worked out. Aquilani who many claim cost 17 million from Roma was initially brought in for 5 million with various add-ons added based on appearances. A misdiagnosed injury that lasted longer than anticipated meant that he never got his career started at Liverpool and maybe he did not suit the Premier League but I feel given enough opportunities alongside a defensive MF he would have played well. It is also sad that Babel due to his attitude never really improved or fulfilled his potential.
Time will tell if Daglish’s work in progress comes to fruition like Rafa’s Lucas but I think the daggers will be out due to what is evidently a lack of talent. I won’t be holding my breath on this one. At the moment our main core achievers are mainly Rafa’s team: Gerrard, Skrtel, Agger, Reina, Johnson, Lucas, Maxi augmented by Enrique, Bellamy and Suarez.  Anyway I for one will not say anything bad about Rafa because he was directly responsible for bringing back some good memories for a few seasons, getting us regular Champions League football, Istanbul, European pedigree and fighting a against the crooks who damn well nearly destroyed our Club. He was not perfect but he gave us some pride back again, revolutionised the Academy and even contributed to Charity becoming a part of the Liverpool Football Club and community. Now we should put some faith in Daglish and back him for a few seasons at least. COME ON YOU REDS!!

  91. personally i think we need someone who can hold and play the ball between the lines in the final third... unfortunately i dont see Bent as that person, mind you i dont get to see a lot of his games...

    on a lighter note:
Im glad LS didnt say sorry to evra, and im glad LFC are sticking by LS... Evra is such a pathetic hypocrite.  go to the youtube linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4_fQXwIV4E&feature=player_embedded#! and at 0:35:30 he has no problems displaying his vocabulary to others... i hope the little prissy b.i.t.c.h. gets cervical cancer and a mouth full of herpes... oh as for the media in the whole affair, they can go and they should all die of botulism...

  92. I totally agree with you guys, that we do not need another english player. England is far behind as far as skills, intelligence and technical are concerned. If Liverpool is going to spend that much of money, they might as well buy a raw talent in South America or any where else. I was completely right about Carrol and Adam not performing to liverpool standards and i'm sure i'll be right about Bent.

  93. although bent is not my favourite first choice, he does score goals,it is simple as that. this is not football manager, this is real life!! if bent can give us 20 goals a season inthe prem then its a better return than any of our strikers now. What is the point of having a technically superior striker when all you need is a hungry goal grabber like , rush, fowler, owen etc. As for the british set up through out the team i have no problem with, as liverpool have played very well this year and we are still in contention to finish in the top 4, remember all top sides have to come to anfield! People need to remember, kenny won the league with both liverpool and black burn with predominently british players as they provide consistency, especially during the winter periods when forien players tend to go missing. all liverpool need is goals, this is the difference, even the other night we had the majority of possesion and play but it was the lack of goal threat that ultimately was our down fall. people are relating adam with alonso, however not remembering it was benitez who froze alonso out and alonso left on his own accord, the same with mascherano and torres. liverpool do not need high profile young players who have one eye on liverpool and the other on madrid or barcelona. This season has seen a vast improvement on how we play, a vast improvement of squad depth and we still can improve by finishing off teams. If kenny buys in people to complete this then liverpool can hopefully cement the top 4 slot and then next year have a good go at the title as everyone will  have settled.

  94. He is 27.5 years old and will get 15+ a season surely. His record over the last 3 years says 17, 25, 17. What we need is a goal scorer so I would take him for 18-20 mln. We could sell him in 2.5 years for at least 10 mln. Isn't it a good investment?

  97. He will not fare any better than Carroll; even though he is a better player. I think this great club needs a broad minded manager.

  100. Bent would do good for you lot. You create more chances than any other team in this league and one thing bent knows is where the net is. I don't blame him from wanting to leave villa we create nothing for him week in week out. I know liverpools current crop are not as good as previous teams but I'd give my right arm to be in your position. It could be worse you could have mcleish at the realm!

  102. I don't think anyone said Tallec and the rest were signed by Rafa. I think it used as a illustration that not all players turn out to be good in the long term a la Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Surely at least one of those clubs that he has played for has had better wing play than we have had at Liverpool. Absolutely non-existent. So in terms of wing service, doubt Pool's wing play was any better than what he got at say Spurs or Villa. Bent and Carroll need wing play and we got none of that at here.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah, at least one, but what about the clubs he hasn't had better service at? Whether it comes from the wings or not, a few games ago we where right at the top for chances created, so something must be happening.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Adam is easily worth the £8mil we paid as a squad player (current prices in mind). Henderson cost closer to £15mil and has a long way to go before he is to be judged as the finished product.

    ReplyDelete
  106. None.

Or one if you include this case.

    Certainly not before this incident.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Carroll and Bent are the sort of players that rely on wing play.Bent also is much better when playing against a high line.

Most of these teams he has played for usually come up against teams who don't deploy a deep line, so he has room to move behind defences.

Whereas when small teams come up against sides like Liverpool, City, United, Arsenal and Spurs, small teams play deeper defensive lines and in my view, Bent struggles against deep defensive lines.

This is where the likes of Bent, Hernandez and Defoe fall short to varying degrees. Their all-round game isn't that good and rely heavily on high line and wing play. The latter two have had the benefit of very good wing play, which helps them to overcome a deep defensive line problem as well as a effective counter attack. Whereas they would struggle to have a impact at Liverpool, where we have no wing play at all.

Bent is a good player but needs the right set up, just like Carroll does. Despite his finishing problem this season, Suarez fits in because he is more involved in the play and can play against deep defensive line.

Don't get me wrong, Bent is a fine player and a good player in the right set up but i just don't think he would suit us that well. Would be nice option to have on the bench but not as a first XI striker. Neither Carroll or Bent are the type of first XI strikers we need, in my view, in our current tactical set up.

    ---

In relation to the chances we have created. Well I haven't said we haven't created chances. I am pointing out that the likes of Bent and Carroll rely heavily on wing play.

In the last two games against Newcastle (before Gerrard came on against Newcastle) and City, we created very little in terms of proper chances, despite the decent share of the possession we had. Guess who was missing? Suarez. He can link things up and play possession football, as well as provide a presence up front, even if his finishing has been dud this season.
