CONFIRMED: €13m transfer fails, but LFC still have time to sign this Genius...

I know I've banged the drum about this before but in light of recent developments, I feel it needs to be said again: Basel midfield maestro Xherdan Shaqiri is available for transfer right now for a comparatively cheap price, and Liverpool would be mad to miss out on this golden opportunity to sign the Swiss International.

Shaqiri was in negotiations with Galatasary earlier this week for a potential transfer, but talks broke down and deal could not be concluded. The Turkish giants confirmed on their website:

"Negotiations with the professional football player Xherdan Shaqiri which began on the 23rd January 2012 have come to an end, we have not agreed terms with [Shaqiri] and his club F.C Basel."

Galatasaray vice-president Ali Dürüst added:

"Shaqiri's club Basel wanted a transfer fee that we would not accept and as a result negotiations have come to an end."

Earlier this month, Galatasary president Unal Aysal told reporters:

“We’ve made an official offer for Shaqiri. We didn’t offer €10m; we offered a lower amount, but with bonuses it would come to €13m. The club told us that they received offers from a few other places, and after evaluating them all, they would come back to us”

So, the facts are:

* Shaqiri is definitely available in January.
* He fits Liverpool's transfer philosophy.
* The top bid so far only amounts to €13m (£10.9m)
* Shaqiri himself has confirmed that he wants to leave Basel.

Galatasaray's President admitted that he put in a bid that was 'lower' than €10m; if we guesstimate that his offer was, say, €8m (£6.9m), then surely a bid of £10-£15m would go close to sealing the deal?

In my view, it would be a dereliction of duty if Liverpool didn't, at the very least, make a bid for Shaqiri; he's only going to get better, and he may never be available at this kind of price again.

Come on, Kenny - pull out all the stops and SIGN HIM!

  1. Not going to happen. He is not british, and has 2 much talent. We don't like buying talented players at liverpool. Just overpriced, british and very mediocre. It's getting pathetic.

  2. He is a real cracker.Wow

  3. He doesn't track back and defend...ever!!!

Good as he is attacking, he's not a good enough player to be relieved of defensive duties.

  4. As much as I would love it to happen, it won't. He's too good, got skill and flair!! We only do slow, but has potential, which they will never produce!!

  5. He is just not that good... he is no where near MATA good and doesn't look like becoming so as he doesn't score that many goals or make that many assists in a poor Swiss league.

However if you analyse europes leagues, there are not actually any decent wingers out their that would want to play for us... therefore taking a risk on this guy for £14m or so may be worth the risk as he is still young, physically built for the EPL, generally good at getting the ball into the danger zone and probably his best attribute is keeping the ball well and being confident enough to make space and see decent forward passes.

Actually...thinking about it he probably would add something to our right wing so probably would be a good buy.

  6. Would be a brilliant strike partner for our other forwards and a perfect fit on either flank or a front 3. Love how he likes to shoot early and at a good distance from goal. Only Joe Hart would be able to stop him.

  7. Wow??? Not good enough for Liverpool. No way will we bother to sign him. It's OK playing against poor goal keepers, it makes you look good. Can he pass, head the ball, tackle and does he have any awareness of his team mates?

  8. HHe's better than what we've got at the moment and for that price we can't go wrong

  9. Agree Jaimie... hope Kenny sees the light and does what is necessary to do the deal now.

  11. Cristian Rordriguez of Porto is out of contract this summer. Unless we have an issue with experience (he is 26 years old), why can't we secure his signature paying 2 or 3 million to Porto? The same goes for Dzogyev, a very promising Russian player who will be out of contract this summer.

Similarly in the DM area, Montolivio is out of contract this summer and may be a bargain is possible. As are possibilities to pick Zarate and Vargas.

Several options are there and we can pick good players in this window including Podoliski, Marin and Kagawa but for some reason it seems we think we can get to the top 4 by some miracle. FSG need to invest in this team and Kenny and Comolli should push for that if the objective is to be met.

  12. Was that whole video in slow motion? Or was it just bad keeping? The BPL would eat this guy alive. Not Liverpool or BPL standard!

  16. This weeks papering over the cracks is going to only make matters worse come the end of the season.
He's not British and has way too much flare ..besides we have the unplayerable (literally) Downing.

  17. Suck kenny's dick that's why you know?

  18. Liverpool is waiting for Newcastle to get him so they can hand over £30mln once he is premier league proven.
Why waste £10-£15mln now when you can always get him for £30mln later on.

  23. Come on people, get a grip....

Do you not think there are reasons behind why Basel could not sell this guy for 5m a year ago and why now at the height of the Shaqiri madness, clubs have not signed him...LFC is not the only club that needs players.

It is well documented that this kid has been a major problem for Basel, on and off the field. He is exceptionally petulant on the field, dare i say worse than CR7's tantrums.Has a lackluster work ethic and has extremely erratic form.

He is a luxury player, not some1 you bring in to depend on game after game. Right now LFC have the opportunity to add quality to their squad, adding Shaqiri to this team right now, is a bad move.

Players like Scott Sinclair,Jr Hoilett, Marvin Martin, Marco Marin, Ryad Boudabouz, Kevin De Bruyen, Stevan Jovetic, Leandro Damaio, Seydou Doumbia, Javi Martinez, Arturo Vidal, Luuk De Jong, Rudi Van Wolfswinkel, Mesut Ozil, Kesuike Honda, Loic Remy...etc, are much better and safer investments than Shaqiri!

If i were to sign players from Basel it would be Granit Xhaka & maybe have a look at Valentine Stoker (He might not be as flashy as Shaq but is just as productive and much more consistent & level headed player)

    Without prejudice...

  24. I think you will find that Joe Hart was unable to stop him scoring from range when he played against England.

  25. Can't believe that people are saying that we shouldn't take a chance on this guy at the price he is available for. As for him being trouble, if we are willing to consider Tevez.........................

  26. When will you people un derstand that you dont tell any Liverpool manager who to sign and who not too If or when a player is signed he will become a Liverpool player and we get behind him that is how it works

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not convinced, but better him than no one.

    ReplyDelete
  28. right, hold on to your hat jaimie....i completely agree with you. certainly he is not the finished article but the potential is there in abundance. certainly for the money and his age he is worth a punt.

to everyone saying he is not good defensivly, lets remember he is 19 years old and we proberly have the best defensive coach in the league in Steve Clarke. also as a side note, how often does David Silva track back and defend? would you not have him either coz he doesnt defend? shaqiri is very similar to silva when he was 19, infact you could argue he is better than silva was at 19.

love to see it happen, unfortunaly i dont think it will.

  29. wat happened to my post???????????

  30. worth a punt, surely can't be worse than adam/hendo/downing. flair players always come at a cost, but they can also unlock doors to parked buses.
it seems the lad from uruguay is coming in, but who else? can see 2/3 players being brought in this window, the owners are not shy to spend, the only problem is who's spending the cash.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You are aware of the UEFA rules regarding home-grown players, that came into effect at the start of LAST season? There's also the financial fairplay situation as well, which is why Chelsea & Man City have stopped throwing stupid amounts of cash around - why City WON'T sign any players this window until Tevez is out the door.
Clubs have to balance the books now - we may have spent 100M+ in the last 12 months, but we have spent money that we brought in, NOT what FSG/NESV made available, through transfers and NOT having to pay interest on a massive debt (approx 60M a season in itself). It's entirely feasible that what was spent in the summer was all we had to spend for the season, despite what Ian Ayre may tell the public. There will be a stadium to pay for, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Financial fair play is a key reason to stockpile talented young players for decent fees and wait for their value to rise in time (instead of buying players at a point at which it is almost impossible for them to ever be sold for a profit, a la Carroll, Downing and even Henderson to a slightly lesser extent!).

At the very worst, even if he flopped (relatively) Shaqiri's value would still be around £10m in 2-3 years when he's still in his early 20's, while in a best case scenario he'll prove himself and see his value sky rocket to the point where he's either a star player or ready to be sold for a big profit in 4-6 years.

The long term financial outlay depends on the short term success of the club. It is imperative that LFC gets back into the Champions League asap, so it is important to bring in players while we can still sell players on that potential and it is possible to achieve those aims, rather than waiting around and assuming that the same opportunities will still exist in the future.

  34. Come on, calling someone a genius who is playing really well for Basel is not being objective.

And he is not exactly being cheap.

I'd like Liverpool to get Texeira in this transfer window, he could work well with Suarez.
