John Aldridge CONFIRMS: Liverpool star IS 'set to move on' this summer....

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has suggested that Brazilian defender Fabio Aurelio will definitely leave Anfield this summer.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge questioned Kenny Dalglish's decision to play Fabio Aurelio ahead of Jon Flanagan in the club's recent FA Cup victory over Oldham at Anfield:

"I thought it was a strange decision not to start him ahead of Fabio Aurelio.

"Aurelio has only got a few months of his contract left and is set to move on this summer".

Aldo's statement is positive and absolute: Aurelio 'IS set to move' on. This could just be his opinion, but maybe it's a footballing freudian slip; he could've said 'Aurelio 'may' move on, or 'it's likely' he'll move, but he said he IS set to move on.

Given his status as a former Liverpool player, Aldo will obviously have the inside track on what goes on at Liverpool, and perhaps he's had discussions with someone who's basically confirmed that Aurelio will not be offered a new contract?

Whatever his intention, Aldo was clearly impressed with Flanagan's performance:

"Jon Flanagan was brilliant when he came on against Oldham.

"Flanagan is the future of the club and it was great to see him make such a big impact in the closing stages"
.

Flanagan has always done well for Liverpool when he's played, but with Jose Enrique firmly established in the left-back position, he'll have a hard time getting regular first-team pitch time.

Perhaps he'll feature against Man City at some point over the two-legged Carling Cup game?

  1. Hello Jaimie, I recently posted on this subject and wrote about Aurelio and Flanagan and somebody basically told me I was an idiot as it is Robinson who is the left back, not Flanagan. I had it in my head though that Flanagan was a left back due to him comin on at left back in the Oldham game but I googled to make sure and it seems to suggest he is a right back. I really cannot remember which side of the pitch Robinson and Flanagan played on last season, can you or anyone clear it up as Aldridge clearly thinks he's a left back.

  4. Hi Chucky - I think he's predominantly a right back (as the poster below suggests) but he can play on the left, as we saw at Oldham. He's also played on the left in reserve/youth games.

  5. im sorry hes going but he has to find a club where he can play more, its a shame because hes made of glass, take injuries like a kid and enrique is doing well cant see him losing his place to aurelio so he will leave in the summer but we wont have a strong back up for enrique then, robinson is still too young guess we have to sign another left back for back up anyway thats aint a worry as long as we  have a fit enrique in the team the only thing I dont like at him is his shots towards the goal just horrible I would suggest him not to try to shoot and score unless we are 2 3-0 up because he really screws up there

  6. All this excitement over Flanagan is a bit ridiculous imo - if he's the 'future of the club', then the club's future sadly won't be what some of us hope it to be...

  12. FIFA has a lot to answer for!
People do not seem to realise that the future of the club is investing in the best youth+training and buying the right key players in. Just like Barca do. Also, the new financial restrictions and home grown rulings will mean a change in the way ALL premiership teams obtain talent in the future.
By investing in youth as we are now we are taking the right approach.

  16. If Aurelio was fit I'd play him, I think he has a lot of quality. Even looked ok when Rafa used him as a defensive midfielder. But, he never has been, isn't and never will be fit for more than 2 or 3 games at a time so he has to go especially as Robinson and Flanno can both play at LB.

  19. yes,, its not football fantasy league, and besides, podolski wont go anywhere from germany,, but realistic and very much needed, Loan signing of Granero from Real MAdrid,,,, and still cant believe u think Lucas isnt good enough m8,, also would be realistic is Johnson from city,,,, as far as striker is concerned,,, still think Caroll should be given chance,, we have to see how he does with Gerrard,,, atleast for 3 matches,,,, YNWA

  20. Flannagan  can play at left back but is more suited for RB,,, and Robinson is the left back,,, i think we need to play them as second choices to enrique,,, Its no good signing and developing youth players and not play them and go onto market and sign expensive stars,,, We have so many other exciting young players, like Suso, Sterling, Coady, also Wilson,, Coates... I agree with Mechanic,, and this is the right step and we can sign some epensive players,,, to add tht extra flavour and vibe,,, YNWA
