Alan HANSEN: They have 'a real chance' of winning the title...

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen believes that Spurs are in with a great chance of winning the league this season, but argued that their title credentials are about to severely tested.

Speaking to the BBC, Hansen seemed very enthusiastic about Spurs' chances of winning their first Premier League title. He said:

"Can they win the title? A lot could still go wrong but they don't have any European distractions and they have the strength in depth they need. If they can keep players like Modric, Adebayor, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon fit, then they have got a real chance.

"They obviously think they are good enough to win the title, and they seem determined to prove it - which has been reflected in their form since they lost to both Manchester clubs at the start of the season.

"The crunch time for Spurs is going to come when they face City, Liverpool, Arsenal and United in the space of six weeks, starting at Etihad Stadium on 22 January".

Liverpool's most important target this season is to finish in the top 4 and get back into the Champions League, and Hansen believes that the team can do it.

However, he has warned that just scraping into the top 4 will not appease the club's fans for very long. Speaking at a recent Charity event in Liverpool, Hansen argued:

"Liverpool supporters aren't going to accept top four.

"They want top of the tree - they want us to be back where we should be, and that's right back at the very top of the league".

I think it's fair to say that Liverpool will not win the title this season, so if it's not us, I would love to see Spurs do it. They play excellent football, and Harry Redknapp has consistently proven over the years that he is a great manager, and I think he deserves the recognition for that.

Having said that, when Spurs come to Anfield on the 6th February, I obviously hope Liverpool put a major dent in the title ambitions.

  1. As a Liverpool fan, I look at Spurs with jealousy. We're miles off them in terms of quality, especially in midfield and up front. Funnily, enough we spent most of our money last summer on midfield and up front.

  2. We've got the man who started the revolution at Spurs in Comolli.. So lets just wait and hope...

  3. Looking at Spurs, I cannot believe that Man City have not recalled Adebayor. City must have, like the rest of us, looked at it at the start of the season and thought that the top three will be between themselves, Utd and Chelsea and then the fourth place between Spurs, LFC and Arsenal... therefore not viewing Spurs as a direct rival.

Obviously that has changed and on Saturday night Spurs will probably be joint top with City and Utd. Now I cannot believe that City, seeing as though they own Adebayor's contract, have not got a recall option or at least power to end the loan with Spurs. They could recall him and re-loan him to a foreign club - Adebayor may not like it but City own his contract!

Can you imagine if Adebayor goes on a scoring run from now until May and Spurs win the league by a point from City! I doubt that Sheikh Mansour will be happy in that situation - being beaten by a guy who you are paying most of the wage to!!

  4. I believe if your going to sign the right players then you have to allow Comolli to do it and not Dalglish.
Comolli got us Ekotto 2.5m, Hudd 2.5, Dawson 3, Kaboul 5, Bale 5, Lennon 1, and modric 16 for the same amount as Andy Carroll....all took there time but are now outstanding players....it takes time.

Dalglish cant be trusted with signings, Carroll and Downing are failures......to be fair in Downings case he always has been...

I believe Henderson and Enrique will be amazing players as is Suarez, Agger, Kelly, Reina, Lucas, Gerrard and Bellamy so you have a core group thats great.

I just think 2 wingers of real quality will make a huge difference to your play......we are a different side without Lennon and Bale

  5. He bought some poor players as well as good players such as Bentley, Dos Santos, Boateng, etc.  Spurs had some two or three forgettable seasons containing players signed by Comolli, when Jol was there I think. So Comolli's signings weren't a immediate success. But yes, he bought some very good players too. No one is perfect.
The question is how much money and time can we afford to throw away until he and KK get it right?

  6. decent comments from jaymeariel,im a pool fan and wanted to say your making sense and that your keeping it real rather than the slagging that goes on between fans.dalglish certainly needs input as he is manager, but your comments are refreshing as no bitchin.always makes for good honest rivalry rather than some of the hate filled ones we keep reading.well done mate.

  8. Surely Commolli has now proved himself by signing Gerrard, what a masterstroke this surely proves the King and Commolli are light years ahead of everyone else in their recruitment campaign.

  21. None of his players were immediate successes. They all needed a season or 2 to become good, but even those that Spurs let go of have become good with other clubs.

  22. Lennon and Bale aren't deadly without Modric.
