MACCA: "They looked jaded. I feel disappointed..."

Despite a fantastic second-half performance, Liverpool dropped another two points at home against Man City on Sunday, and former defender Jason McAteer has expressed his disappointment over Liverpool's continued failure to be more clinical in front of goal.

McAteer, who was commentating on the game for LFC TV, called Liverpool's second half performance 'fantastic', but was clearly frustrated at another home draw:

"I think it's Roberto Mancini who's going to be the happier manager. His team at times got tore to pieces, but I can't help thinking it's very similar to what we've seen: Liverpool playing fantastically well at home, and not seeing out the result, and not getting the three points.

"Maybe it had something to do with City travelling away during the week, as they looked jaded with 20 minutes to go, and Balotelli getting sent off didn't help. I feel disappointed, and that's probably being ultra-critical, because the second half performance was fantastic.

"You look back, and Liverpool were good enough to win those games [against Man United and Norwich], but we need to be clinical; you've got to finish those chances, and you've got to see the game out.

I know fans don't want to face the truth, but Luis Suarez's league goal record is just not good enough at the moment. As I wrote last week, the Uruguayan has scored on 2 goals in the last 11 league games, which is clearly not a return that matches his ability.

There's no doubting Suarez's ability - he is a fantastic player, and always gives 100%; however, he needs to score more goals.

If Suarez had converted a few of the many of chances he's had this season, Liverpool might be a few points better-off in the league right now.

Still, it's heartening to see Liverpool dominate the league leaders, and it all bodes well for the future.

  1. Any chance of a positive post sometime soon? Oh well, maybe not.

  2. Luis Suarez more goals? what about Carroll? and the other players? just Suarez?
Pleaseee, Luis is playing alone there he does almost everything, Liverpool should buy a good "9" and take responsibility from Suares and he will score more goals

  3. True for the season but not true yesterday. Apart from one howler by Downing from a lovely cross from Henderson when he blasted across the 6 yard line instead of at goal there was very little poor finishing. (Enrique could have done better after a long run into the box in the 2nd half too).

So Jason McAteer is basically wrong about yesterday. You have to go back to January of this year for an EPL game where Joe Hart has made so many saves. And what saves they were. The double-save from Carroll's header and then Suarez's follow-up was as good as any you will see this season. (Sticking a leg out to deny Adam in the first-half was world-class too.)Pity I have felt the same way about Vorm (Swansea) from Glen Johnson and Ruddy (Norwich) from Suarez at similar points in the game. Hart becomes the 4th keeper to be man-of-the-match (add De Gea of Man Utd to that group) for an opposing team at Anfield.Feel we are due a big-win sometime soon. Most importantly we need to carry the same intensity, overall play and tactical smarts (from Kenny and Steve) into every remaining EPL game this season.Fulham will be a tough game next week. Drew with Arsenal and City and were unlucky not to get something against Spurs either.  Would like to see us stick to a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1.YNWA.

  4. Guauuu, you are complaining about a guy who does always 100 %, that creates more chances than nobody in the League. Give me a break, what about CHelsea?
If Torres would scores more goals then Chelsea should be in first place, right?
Find somebody good to play with Suarez, Kenny is a fantastic coach but he is changing team every week, last weekend Maxi played great then this past weekend was not there, Dawning only has 1 leg (left) Henderson only has one leg (right) you need good players, today football is more than speed, you know that, England must know that, once for ever

  5. I think you should focus on the bigger picture, Luis is a support striker. Plus have some patience Jamie. You sound like an impetuous child in a sweet shop. The level of consistency is getting better. I haven't enjoyed football this much since I were a lad. The results will come with somebody in tandem with Luis. Lets hope its Caroll. I think the lad been unlucky.

  6. Totally agree with Suarez being a support striker and clearly going to create more than he ever scores but to even start questioning his return of goals at this stage is daft!! All strikers(apart from Messi and Ronaldo ) go through spells of not scoring but then hit a good vein of form, Villa at Barca comes to mind at the moment!!!

  7. Why is it daft? Suarez is our main striker; he is paid huge amounts of money to score goals. The fact he isn't scoring goals is costing Liverpool valuable points in the league. The Man City game marks 5 home draws in the league; if Suarez had buried a couple of the numerous chances he's had in those games, some of those draws would've been turned into wins.

If Liverpool don't make 4th place at the end of the season, the excuse that 'All strikers go through spells of not scoring' is going to be small consolation for another year without Champions League football.

If it was one or two games it wouldn't be an issue, but 2 goals in 11 Premier League games is a serious issue that needs to be addressed (IMO).

  8. Luis Suarez would score more goals if he spent more time on his feet rather than rolling around pretending he's seriously injured and trying to get players sent off.

  9. Why was my post removed. It was a question, not abuse.

  10. quite honestly. Man City played a good game. You can see that even though Liverpool had a higher tempo they were good in possession and pressed Liverpool at times. But it all goes down to the hard work of the men in Red. I feel every player raised their game against Man City, a team that have an enormous amount of talent at their disposal. Liverpool even produced chances to score and win the game. This level of performance was high-intensity, and games should be played like this more consistently especially against lesser opponents. This is a good result but shouldn't dwell on it since there is a game coming up against Chelsea.

  11. City looked knackered after 30 mins because of their CL game in Italy 3 days earlier, which made LFC look great in the second half. It will be a different matter next time you play us when we're as fresh as you. Also you should be ashamed by some of your players unsporting behaviour. It demeans the teams efforts and makes you look like cheats...

  13. As for the Luis Suarez factor. How many players in the Premier League go on barren runs? Luis Suarez, scoring goals or not, still has fans at the edge of their seats. There are plenty of occasions in the Man City match that showed the quality of Suarez. He still continues to nutmeg players, and go about his thing even though one of the best defenders of the ball in Kompany was marking him. If "people" are doubting Suarez, then why don't they just write an article on getting Suarez kicked out of the club? If anything we will make a profit on him regardless of his form, because  a player of his caliber that can pick out passes that at times his own teammates can't read will be undoubtedly snapped up by the best teams or "team" on the planet.

  14. free speech? What is wrong with this article? You are not allowed to say. I would like to say that Lucas was immense at the weekend, but will not be allowed to by Adolf.

  16. You're at it again, aren't you, Jaimie? From the headline to the general tone of the article, it would be difficult to describe you as a genuine supporter of the club. Not that it's a prerequisite to be a supporter in order to blog, but you do seem keen on trying to have it both ways. You cloak your pessimism in objectivity, while there's a real paucity of actual objectivity. And, before you demand that I stop reading your blog if I don't like it, I access these articles through a Liverpool aggregating site and have no idea who wrote them until I read them. But, yes, I would like Suarez to score more. Cheers.

  17. I'm sure this aggregation site lists the source of the article next to the title, and since I write everything on this site, then next time you see 'Liverpool-Kop' next to an article, you'll know not to click it. Problem solved.

  18. why do i keep reading that city were dominated? City controlled the first half, its just for once, the attacking play wasnt giving results. City probably looked jaded cos of the amount of times city players were left in a heap after being cut down. You were starting to dominate when mario was sent off, and then city didnt stand a chance. Dont know what aftershave mario wears but when his shirt grazed the liverpool players face, it had him rolling round in pain. must be strong stuff.
Like city, liverpool are far from the finished article. The advantage city have, is they are finishing lesser sides off.

  19. Jamie, again - I find your tone odd. Wouldn't you prefer that readers continue reading your blog? And, if so, wouldn't you find it worthwhile to engage in a fruitful discussion with them? I understand the inevitable pessimism of the long-suffering fan (not that we've had so much suffering compared to others, of course). But I'm merely pointing out that you do seem to dwell on negatives - Suarez should score more, Carroll should score some - than on solutions - Suarez needs help up top, Carroll should be supplanted as second striker by a better option during the transfer window. Clearly you are passionate and informed. Why not use your passion and knowledge to a more productive end?

  20. Look, Redruffing - I'm not interested in your sniping.  If you find my tone 'odd' then go elsewhere.  Why waste your time?

There's something that you need to understand: I write about things that interest me; I don't write to please the masses, and if people don't like this site then that's fine by me. If everyone stopped visiting tomorrow it would make no difference to me.
You clearly know nothing about this site.  I do not 'dwell on the negatives' - I prefer realism, telling the truth, and highlighting areas for improvement.  I also write LOTS of positive stuff, but to acknowledge that wouldn't fit your argument. If you can't hack realism, then head across to RAWK, where blind faith is the order of the day.Re 'fruitful discussion': that goes on every single day. This site has close to 100,000 comments (across two comment systems), which shows there is plenty of discussion going on.If you have something to add to the various debates going on then your views are welcome. If you persist in posting thinly-veiled sniping, insincere, comments such as your last two posts, then your comments will be deleted.

  24. Pepe Reina gets paid a lot too... why don't I hear, "he should be making more saves"? A: because it makes no sense. Suarez is THE best player we have, and he is, while Gerrard is out, the only top class player in the team. He does his best. Maybe if he had slightly better players to play with he would score more.

  25. My favourite part of the match was when Suarez stamped on Kompany's ankle then threw himself to the ground holding his head.  Class act indeed. The Liverpool way?

    ReplyDelete
  26. My favourite part was when the Liverpool players surrounded the ref and got Balotelli a second yellow when clearly it was a run of the mill, harmless challenge and certainly not worthy of a booking.  Didn't help that the big strapping player who had been challenged rolled around like he'd been shot when replays show there was very little contact at all.  Was this also The Liverpool way?

  27. We are the only team who played against city and managed to give them such a hard time. Even manutd tried but failed badly. We got so close of giving them their first defeat of the season. I think liverpool is the unluckiest team ever. All these draws could easily have been wins. It happened during the benitez era and it cost us the title. I hope its not gonna cost us the champions league this time. Anyway we had an awesome match and played brilliant football. My favourite moment was agger having the better of aguero at one point in the match.

  28. you are more confused than i thought. Suarez has been great and cant do everything himself. You blame the players way too much. Against man city we deserved to win but i applaud joe hart for a fantastic performance and deserves title as best goalkeeper in world. why dont u pick on carroll anyway he is miles worse than suarez. i think paying 35 mil for carroll was biggest blunder in football transfer history and whats worse is it went to fat mike ashley
