GARY GILLESPIE: "If anyone is guilty, it's Patrice Evra..."

Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie has thrown his full support behind Luis Suarez over the ongoing racial abuse row with Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

Gillespie was emphatic with his view on the issue, and even accused Evra of being the guilty party:

"This thing with Evra is dragging on a bit, but for me I think he [Luis Suarez] is totally innocent 100%. If anyone's guilty I think it's Evra for over-elaborating the story and exaggerating".

Gillespie's total support is admirable but I don't see how he could know whether Evra over-elaborated or exaggerated. Perhaps he has some inside info in the issue? Anyway, let's hope he's right!

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently accused Suarez of being a diver, and the negative press seems to have snowballed in recent weeks as a result of that. Gillespie doesn't think Suarez will be affected by this though:

"To be honest, I don't really see there's been a lot of negative press about him. Kenny will be having a laugh and a joke with him on a regular basis, and I don't think Luis Suarez, with the type of character he is, will be bothered about negative press".

It's now three weeks since Liverpool played Man United and there's still no sign of a resolution to the issue. As Kenny Dalglish argued last week, the FA is definitely 'dragging its feet' over this issue.

  1. I think Evra has at the minimum exaggerated. Terry said one thing and it was picked up. I don't see how Suarez racially abused him 10 times and no person or camera picked up anything. You don't need inside info

  2. I think I will have to stop reading comments from Jaimie Kanwar as I doubt his credentials as a Liverpool supporter

  5. 'I think I will have to stop reading comments from Jaimie Kanwar as I doubt his credentials as a Liverpool supporter'

Why? Because he doesn't let his Liverpool support colour his views heavily? So one has to be ridiculously biased towards Liverpool to write about them?

  6. The problem for the FA is that this situation has snowballed to the point that one party is going to be seen as guilty no matter the outcome. Evra should never have gone to the press and made a public accusation like he did.

If Suarez is guilty then the FA will need cast iron proof before taking any measures against him. If they clear Suarez then there is going to be a massive call for action against Evra. The problem there is that Evra could easily and justifiably argue that there isn't any clear evidence that he lied because the chance exists that no camera or person was able to pick up what actually happened between the two players.

It's a difficult scenario and I wouldn't be surprised if we see the FA release a statement that doesn't vilify either party but leaves doubt enough that we can all spend years debating it. Think of it as the phantom goal against Chelsea.

  8. Oh so you reckon the fact that not one of the numerous cameras or microphones picked up anything means it was simply missed? I highly doubt anything said 10 times would not be picked up by these devices. Evra is a typical lying, dirty no good waste of a human skin.

  9. not only was no comments picked up by the camera's or microphones, not a single player or official on the pitch heard anything either, Evra has no evidence whatsoever,  what is there to investigate, Suarez has no case to answer, simples.

  10. Obviously I have no clue as to whether Suarez racially abused Evra or not; but Evra certainly did overplay his accusations, primarily by saying it happened 'more than 10 times' whilst not even once was this mentioned during the game.

On another occasion when ManU were involved in such allegations, Evra was suspended for attacking fellow professionals; & know he wants us to believe that at no time did he react to these multiple slurs - do me a favour!

& another reason I started to think he 'protests too much',  is by going straight to Canal+ & repeating the accusations, as if to show some sort of outrage. Well, all it really accomplished was to show that he wouldn't be satisfied with the FA inquiry on its own; which itself describes 'effected scandal'.
& a slightly more minor issue would be Evra's claimed statements about cameras - if he had at any time thought about such comments, he would know that cameras can prove absolutely nothing about such accusations; which again only seem to seve one thing: 'effected authenticity'.

I think it's worth mentioning Suarez' work in Africa, which would certainly show his true character regarding people of other race & skin colour.

Suarez may well have grounds for a defamation suit, & if this should happen, Evra's manager as well as the Mirror could find themselves in trouble. That is the primary reason the FA have told other parties to keep their mouth shut.

  11. Evra should be sued for defamation and slander, he went public on Canal+ before any report had even been filed. If he can't substantiate this he should be taken to the High Court!!!!!..............this could damage commercial sales regarding Suarez (shirt sales)...etc

  12. He said it on TV, that is defamation and slander...............fact!!!!....

  13. Last time I checked "Evra you're a fucking cunt" wasn't racist...

  14. The Terry case is very clear, he does not deny saying what he saw him say, I think the FA are looking for a way out for Evra.............they won't want Liverpool and Suarez to sue him and damage the Kick it out campaign!!!!

  16. Suarez has admitted calling Evra a 'negro', bit claims that it is used commonly in his culture. So it seems Evra didn't lie.

  21. Sorry Gano, I agree that Evra doesn't have a leg to stand on with these allegations; but slander IS defamation. In any court, you cannot have 'defamation & slander'; you can have libel & slander, or even both, but whatever the litigation was based on, it would be a defamation suit

  22. I get your point mate but he is definately in big trouble if he can't substantiate this!!!, when you go public you can't take it back. Liverpool can really fleece him on commercial damage to an asset!!!!...............this is why the FA are in a mess over this!!!

  36. 2 non nationals playing abroad in the english prem (a foriegn league to them.)

    Both speak a differnet langauge/dielect

The country they play in has rules and regs outlined in a language that is not thier 1st toungue.

add to this the fact each relevant country has a culture, diversity, customs etc.. of its own.

thats quite a recipe for missunderstanding, confusion, ignorance and quite a few other factors to boot.

not forgeting people can get caught in the heat of the moment, and say or act in a less than honest manor.

the truth is never straight forward.

well never quite know what happened, best to put it behind us all and move on
