What exactly did Luis Suarez say '10 times' to Patrice Evra during Liverpool's game with Man United in October? Speculation has reached fever-pitch over the last few weeks, and Suarez has admitted that he called Evra something 'his Manchester United team-mates call him', but the actual word in question has not been publicly confirmed...until now.
Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has seemingly used his Anfield connections to find out exactly what was said by Suarez to Evra. On Today FM, Lawro revealed:
"I've had a bit of an inside track on exactly what Suarez has said...it's the word 'negrita', and it's used by pundits and commentators in South America, and it's totally accepted by one and all".
"That's obviously going to be his defence, and that's exactly what Liverpool have told the authorities. I can't believe he's going to be found guilty".
So, there you have it. The use of the word 'negrita' is the reason Suarez has been charged by the FA. It seems the speculation was correct, but no one had confirmed it as a fact until now.
On the 13th November, The Guardian stated that 'Top-level sources at Old Trafford' had said that say the offending word was 'a derivative of negro', and then went on to speculate that the word may be 'negrito', but this was not a factual confirmation.
Given Lawrenson's close ties to Liverpool, it would be easy for him to get the 'inside track' on what was said; and by 'inside track', he probably means he's spoken with someone at Anfield who has seen the FA documents relating to the case.
Is negrita a racist term though? According to Mark Sawyer, director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Politics at the University of California Los Angeles, it's a complicated question. In an interview with CNN, he observed:
"It's about questions of translation or context. The word's literal translation is 'little black man', but generally, it is not considered a racial slur in Latin America. In fact, it frequently has a positive meaning, and it's often a term of endearment.
Jorge Chinea, director of the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, was keen to stress that the word's meaning also depends on where and how it is used:
"In Puerto Rico, it has one meaning. In Cuba it has a slightly different connotation and in the Dominican Republic it has a slightly different connotation. In the United States, it sounds offensive to some people".
Sawyer concluded:
"If you want to charge someone with racism or making a racial slur, the person should at least have the intent of making a slur. It's not necessarily clear that Luis Suarez had that intent".

Check out this P Evra u tube video - he is a joke to say ANYTHING to anyone
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4_fQXwIV4E&t=35m30s
negrita is like saying bend over and i will give you something to keep you happy...
ReplyDeleteevra knew this from the start just that luis turned him inside out
ReplyDeleteregardless of this incident ive always detested evra, he is just a piece of sh#t, oops. didnt mean it like that. pathetic all of it. if only he was english and our captain, would not of got a mention.
ReplyDeleteall part of a plan on evras behalf, he is scum of a human.
karma
Not an expert but I think negrita is for females and negrito is for males so unless Suarez is calling Evra a little black girl don't think it's that more likely negrito which, like you said, isn't deemed offensive.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.negrita.com.au/
ReplyDeleteWhy does Lawro feel the need to make any comments on the subject at all, I don't understand. After all, it can be used against the club and against Suarez. Fergie already accused LFC of 'drip-feeding', and what Lawro says - according to "insider info" - only makes it worse. With some sort of friends you don't need enemies, really.
ReplyDeletesorry didnt you know he was a pundit and does a colomn in the paper.
ReplyDeletethink he might be a liverpool fan to.
i think he was probably asked about the situation. get a grip weirdo
Always on the ball, Jaimie, I heard this about 3 days ago, apart from the fact that the word is 'negrito' and Lawro is thick!
ReplyDeleteumm last time i checked wasn,t evra a grown man.....pathetic
ReplyDeleteBuck buck! It's ok to for your readers insult Man U players but not to say you are on the ball because I heard this 3 days ago, or that Lawro is thick? He IS thick. You've called Suarez a detestable little cheat who will always cheat given the chance, but keep writing about him, and you take offence to anything I've just written?
ReplyDeleteJaimie, you are a tw@, I won't be reading your sanctimonious, hypocritical drivel again!
Not quite right negrito is just 'little black' you have to add something else e.g. hombre negrito = little black man, chico negrito = little black boy and bastardo negrito you can work out for yourself. It depends on what is said and how it is said and I don't think Suarez was trying to make friends with Evra. Whatever the outcome Suarez said something including the word black whether in english or spanish. Whether that was racist is yet to be decided but Evra was not 'lying' as so many of you have said.
ReplyDeletei still can't see what's wrong with what luis said he is a negrito after all.
ReplyDeleteWe should play this over the PA at Anfield: http://bit.ly/scTSHJ
ReplyDeletethis sounds like a term bourne out of racial discrimation to me. If this is what has been said, it's not acceptable in the UL and Luis needs to learn to adapt. YNWA
ReplyDeleteHey
ReplyDeletejut because the term is ok in south america doesn't mean it's ok in england..im of colored skin and if in a heat of a game an opposition player referred to me by the color of my skin i gutta admit but id be a pretty offended! i couldn't care less if this is a term of endearment in south america, the fact is suarez was trying to give evra a hard time on the pitch..and he obviously figured out that negrito would do the trick..
ReplyDeleteyou mean evra was the one pushing suarez and getting in his face,i have mates of different religion,in a country where religion is the cause of murder,i work with people from different cultures, i've also had the racist card pulled on me twice, needless to say i arrested them for racism and both times they lost, i hate the racist card being used, football doesnt circulate around england, it circulates around the world "world football", simple misunderstandings are made in different countries all the time, this is all thats happened. NOTE THIS, it is possible suarez used a word that refereed to the colour off evras skin, but, depending the the context off the matter this doesnt always mean that he was being racist, just like when english say, white irish ginger man, sometimes things are only discriptive, and many of my coloured pals i work with state how they hate that some of their "own kind" fold over like little childish kids cause they believe that some words should NEVER be used, but yet its ok for them to use "white man" "british scum", they also state how they hate the single minded ones tut through there teeth, they explained to me how this is a racist action towards a white guy but yet they get away with it. you dont see irish welsh germans as only a few who get descriptive words used about them from who they our. Also i've had a guy from figi, a coloured from england and one from america read what you say, and also the story behind suarez, they all believe that your reaction is slight bigotry and appear to be someone to get excited over something very small with race involved, and actually agreed this makes you in a way racist, all of these guys who neither support livepool or united state that their being unfair against him and his culture and if they were him they'll be chasing a law suit against everyone against him. just shows people like youself, evra and FA are all bigots
ReplyDeleteexactly, thank you, have a look what ya think of my reply to THE_MAN. I got a couple mates in the forces involved in the debate, figian, a coloured english and coloured american, they see this all the time and all say there isnt a problem with using something descriptive, they did say if he said something like you black n!g*r smelly C*"t then thats different, but their all sick off people using the slightist of things to cry about. I had the racist card pulled on me twice, i can assure you i aint racist, so i arrested them for being racist, one actually called me a white bas£ard, and that he cant get done for being racist because he's black, well he got a shock. people need to be more open minded
ReplyDeleteThere is a whole encyclopaedia of 'offensive' trash talking on every football pitch up and down the country every week covering a diverse range of topics and associations to do with players parentage, sexual orientation, relationships etc. Most players take it at what it is and get on with it without offence. I totally support the position that there should be zero tolerance to racism and racist intent in the game, but it does seem that if the context of what is claimed to have been said here is true then the rules of what constitutes racism and the reaction to it is measured on a completely seperate set of rules to other equally disgusting comments that takes place at every game. I am sorry but to take offence at this is an overreaction and a case of sh*t stirring by Evra. There is no place for racism in football or society, as there is no place for calling Arsene Wenger a paedophile or chanting about Munich or Hillsborough, but just like calling Benitez a fat Spanish waiter most players and people in football take it for what it is and manage to retain a sense of perspective.
ReplyDeleteif he did say this and the word negrito is acceptable in south america then he should not be charged. at the end of the day, in our own society it is acceptable for black people to use the N word between each other and we see it through all types of media, but outside this realm it is deemed offensive. If we are going to charge people for using a word or series of them then, the word itself has to be deemed illegal to use by all society. My own examples of this confusion was a couple of years ago we where out shopping in liverpool, liverpool is a multi-cultural city and my step son was listening to 50 Cent, he started singing the words word for word whilst listening to his ipod, when the N word came out I stopped him in his tracks and said you should not use that term as it is offensive. right, he was listening to a song, and singing the words, is he racist or just copying a song from an artist he likes, should i have stopped him from singing the full song? i am confused!!!
ReplyDeleteits all complete bollocks,
ReplyDeletethats backs up my point to "the_man" below. I just wanna know who has given that side of culture the given right to not only choose what is acceptable to say, but they also get to choose when its acceptable, which can clearly be used to an advantage, which will onfuse people as he has done to you. Just like the law, if this is such an issue, then it needs to be made clear like black and white (not in a racist way, its a figure of speech widely known and used across the world), people believe the british culture is the most important and that everyone should follow and abide it, is that not bigotry and racist itself. That wa a good point you put out there.
ReplyDeleteconsidering that suarez continued using the term even after evra had complained to the ref shows that he knew it was an offensive term. One can hardly claim that he used it as a term of endearment after the heated exchanges we saw. an 8 month ban is the least he should get.

Hey Ghanaian Check out before you give an opinion if Evra complained to the ref.
ReplyDeleteIt seema to me Evra is a bit of a baby who could not play against a better player.
He should have complained at the time not later. Good luck to all the Negritas playing football in the UK
a better player? or a cheat? me thinks he couldn't cope with his cheating ways. suarez was marked out of that game by among others evra and that why he resorted to abuse. i am appalled that Liverpool is supporting him in this. shows what kind of people scousers are.
ReplyDeleteEvra is just being a whiny B#tch ! He should just go trade his shorts for skirts...
ReplyDeleteWe are back in primary school where the little girls reported every little thing hapening to the teacher...Grow up Eva! Suarez was right to call you negrita instead of negrito.
whats bin said is all over now but we dont need it in football in any sport any where.
ReplyDeleteWere you watching the right match Ghanaian ??? It's not the match i saw.
ReplyDeleteI speak fluent spanish and lived in Spain for 7 years and I lived and work with alot of southamerican and I know well that some words or phrases means differnet things in different parts of world. In Barcelona sometimes to ask how you are? they say, como va? which means how is it going, however an argentinian friend told me that in Argentina that phrase has sexual intonation to it. so watch it lads lol.
ReplyDeleteIn regard to Evra, again I have heard that Hernadez choose that nickname of Negrito for him and many other Man U players were calling him that name. so I wonder why Sir Alex was so quick to take Evra complaints to Ref but nenver done anything about it in his camp.
Evra is about to write his autobiography and is there a case to make his book a little bit more spicey. I wonder
Steve i think you have been learning spanish in the UK or on the internet. negro is the adjective for the colour black and also black man, male adjectives always end in O and female adjectives end in A, any time the spanish want to say small they add "ito/a" to the end of the adjective so negrito is little black boy the age/size is assumed in spanish from the adding of "ito" or "ita" to the end of the adjective. i think what suarez was referring to was not the colour of his skin but the fact that he was running rings around him like he was a child. hope that clears up any confusion.
ReplyDeleteLawro is a 'plonker'. A useless commentator! Talks crap!
ReplyDeleteWhy? Because you don't agree with him? If he'd said something you agree with I doubt you'd be slagging him off.
ReplyDeleteI think you will find that the 'REF' only found out at the end of the game ? But if you are correct, then Suarez would be a fool to keep using the word ! Therefore I would speculate that it 'WAS NOT MEANT TO BE RACIAL'.
ReplyDeletesorry but both games suarez has played against united he skinned them alive, united couldnt cope with him last seasons game, they couldnt cope again so this is what they resort to. and you say "shows what kind of people scousers are" thats bit of a racist bigotry comment aint it, you fool. Liverpool out played united on every area of the pitch, you'e know this if you watched the game
ReplyDeleteyou keep critisising everyones comments based on your false facts and statements.like the other guy said NO COMPLAINT MADE TILL AFTER THE MATCH also wheres your proof that it was said many many times, no cameras saw or heard it, also no independant witnesses, get off your high horse you fool
ReplyDeletebeautifuly said alan. and a very good point, like i said to someone on this site earlier, when someone is from somewhere different , we use words to be descriptive, this maybe by skin colour, hair colour or anything, but in a descriptive context should not be defined as being racist, maybe hey was taking the piss outa the world cup where everyway through his teddys out the pram like a little black girl, simply being descriptive lol
ReplyDeleteur an iditotic cunt
ReplyDeleteI guess Lawrenson means "negrito". I must admit I never heard the term before but I have heard the term "negro" used in Argentina between friends in an affectionate way - which I think is what Suarez was trying to do (in the same way as use of the term "mate" in the UK).
ReplyDeleteAs to the term negrito, here is one remark I found on the web:
Some English speakers and Americans would like to make this into an offensive word...see the definitions for negrito - but negrito/a is not offensive or racist despite sounding like an English word that is offensive.
evra knows dam well what luis was saying in his country of france they call this people a lot worse then that, luis was saying to evra is negrito i'm making you look bad on the pitch and there is more from where that came from.
ReplyDeleteits called mind games, i like what kenny said a few hours ago if the epl don't adjust to outsiders then they wont come to the epl...i don't think luis ment anything by it.
Dis suarez tell hanson or was he on the pitch when he said it? I'm confused.com.
ReplyDeleteBTW Jamie you chat pure and utter shiite mate. Just thought I'd let you know.
How exactly is this exclusive? You simply copied his quotes from another source. Using misleading headlines to drum up more add revenue Jimmy?
ReplyDeleteWhy did he not refer to him as a French B instead, because Evra is French. Why is that Black people are never given the respect of having a Nationality aswell.
ReplyDeleteWhat an idiot!! Evra is a slime ball who decided to use the race card in order to try to get a fellow professional banned. If Hernandez uses the term of endearment Negrita to Evra then why should be take offence!! It is a cynical attempt to use the race card.
ReplyDeleteso i presume the 3 previous times he accused people, who were cleared, he wasn't a liar then ? he is a liar. He tries to make something into something else. as for 'he said it ten times'. then it becomes '15-20 times' with no witnesses, no man utd player backed him up, no evidence from the cameras ... so why did he only complain when he was getting the hair-dryer for winding up the crowd ?
ReplyDeleteonly a racist will think being called black is an insult. if he called him french this is much worse ! is it not racist of our FA that they wish to fulfil an agenda of pressure from the anti-racist movement (which i totally support) by avoiding charging the England captain and blaming a south american. they just trying to point the finger away from England. i think the word is scapegoat, if thats not offensive to goats ooops sorry ....
ReplyDeleteyea fergie complains about lfc drip-feeding the media .... AT A PRESS CONFERENCE .... lol
ReplyDeleteas i said before we call negrita the one we would like to give something bending down lol..as for the english captain the fa am sure have to be dignified on how they con-ducked them selfs. great win for the boys today.
ReplyDeleteas are all united players
ReplyDeleteall i know is that luis when he was back home he talked to our manager and media about evra and now he has the Uruguayan fa on his side, to add to this about the media he said he was very happy to be a liverpool player ,estoy muy contento jugando con mi cuadro querido, now does are big words to any player of any country...enuff said.
ReplyDeleteIf you are not going to adjust to other cultures you the EPL,then they would not come there. At the end of the day, home sweet home.So you need to treat the matter with a bit of open mindedness and respect to other people. You cannot divide Suarez and South america,It sounds foolish to say if the word is right in S.America it does not mean it is right in English land,.Then, what do you want Suarez to be.Little black man, come on.We have boers here in our own country who can say that to us when they see that you are not giving in, in a battle against them,Or when they see that you won the battle. But we just take it easy and interprete it in a positive way, becos even they(the boers) know that they would just be expressing their feeling or surprise...just in a positive way.You can even take it as a praise to the blackman-negrito.Of coz we have bloody racists around the world.
ReplyDeleteI asked a couple of Uruguayans about this and it has positive and negative meanings there. But they all agreed that you wouldn't use the positive meaning when you were screaming and shoving, nor would you say it 10 times. It's about context, and the angry nature of the dispute does not fit a positive meaning.
ReplyDeletei like your name but i must admit you are a bit slow...if he called him negrita is all in fun but if he called him negrito then his vision is 20-20 lol...
ReplyDeletefuck u ghanaian. who r u to say 8 mth ban. u must be m u idiots !!!
ReplyDeletelook your right and wrong, ofcourse he wasnt being nice, but he was refeering him as a little girl from the way evra was whinging like a little b!t*h, it has more of a descriptive meaning, but wasnt used in a racist manner, a racist wouldnt go out of his way and show support in a povetry ridden black country, which theres pictures to prove this. Also, prove to me and everyone where suarez had said it at least 10 times, you cant, beause you, the ref, players, and video footage didnt even pick up on it once, and you can CLEARLY se the only angry person was evra, he's like that with anyone who out plays and out smarts him, suarez tried to show sportsmanship and evra pushed him away and acted like a child, HE WASNT BEING RACIST. Many many many word in the uk can be used in a positive or negative way, even "mate" can be used in a negative sarcastic manner, does that mean your being racist FECK NO.
ReplyDeleteYou need to see the bigger picture, or , like now, you'll make a pathetic fool outa youself
keith,i am neither,a manchester united or liverpool fan,but i do like to watch world class football,i am originally from sheffield england (two bad teams)but now reside in florida, usa,i watch all sorts of american sports and i can tell you i never hear, racial comments, from fans in the stands or other players, directed at players, not to say that there isnt, but its nothing like the abuse, that people of colour receive in europe,it has to stop,Suarez, statment probably had intent,in a negative racist fashion, hes probably ignorant to the fact that in multi ethnic countries were there is a large melting pot of people of colour its not accepted, in uruguay,it maybe acceptable,to use that word, because of the countrys demographics. 95% of the people are white, the other 5% are of colour, there are many things, you can say to wind someone up,without using the the colour of their skin, but he choose to refer to colour,
ReplyDeleteif evra used a word refering to his hispanic, background, added with little girl,do you think he would want to shake his hand after the game?,i dont think so.im curious to know what former great john barns, glen johnson, and other liverpool players of colour, think about it.
so using that logic, is it fine if we call you dumb ass twat?
ReplyDeletehey, for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-iRLmaZf4A&feature=relatedall those, who talk about the so called race card, check this link out,
ReplyDelete
