EVERTON: Great win, but the red was a joke; Suarez milked it, and Lucas did a Roy Keane...

It's always great to win a Merseyside derby, and there are quite a few positives for Liverpool to take out of the game, but I totally agree with David Moyes' assertion that the game was 'ruined' by referee Martin Atkinson's ridiculous decision to send off Jack Rodwell.

After the game, Moyes was understandably upset:

"I just thought the sending off ruined the game. You get lots of questions from people asking about derbies, tackles and sendings off but that wasn't even a bad tackle.

"I don't even know if we can appeal. I would have been disappointed had it been a free-kick and if he had got a yellow card I think people would have asked 'what's that for?"

As you can see from the following video, Rodwell got the ball, and he got it cleanly:

Rodwell red card vs Liverpool by greekgoalsellas

Maybe it's just me but I find it difficult to take satisfaction from a victory that was built upon such a travesty of footballing justice.

What makes it worse is the reaction of the Liverpool players involved. Luis Suarez went down like he'd just been hit by a truck, and proceeded to writhe around like he was on the verge of death.

Then, a clearly angry Lucas (who obviously didn't have good angle on the tackle) did a Roy Keane and rabidly barged his way towards Atkinson, and had to be dragged away. Seriously, see 0:30 in the video, and tell me that Lucas wouldn't have bundled into the ref if he hadn't been pulled back by Charlie Adam.

So much for Kenny Dalglish's pledge to respect referees.

On the plus side, it's good to see Carroll get off the mark; hopefully his goal will be the first of many. Craig Bellamy and Steven Gerrard made a real difference when they came on, and Liverpool kept their first clean sheet in ages.

It was also pleasing to see another solid performance from Jose Enrique, who provided the cross that allowed Carroll to break his goalscoring duck.

A good three points, I just wish Liverpool had beaten 11 men (and not played so many aimless long-balls!) Still, the club is bang on target for 4th place, and with only 6 points separating Liverpool and the leaders, Man United, things are looking good overall.

Now, it's to endure the torturous tedium of the international break...

Agree on not being able to fully enjoy the victory marked with referee's unjust decision in our favor.

Enrique was great, and this game was another proof why Kelly is better than Johnson.

  5. Wholeheartedly agree with you the red was a joke and a game changer, as up to that point it was an even game and there was no way we would have won by 2 goals 11 v 11 as we found it hard enough to score 10 v 11

  8. while i agree it wasnt a red card, or even a foul for that matter, i must point out that there was a clash of knees. You clearly dont play football but i do and i can tell you that a clash of knees seriously hurts. there was no 'milking it', as you put it, from suarez he was genuinly in pain because that can really hurt and infact suarez was lucky he didnt do any serious damage because i have seen people do the same thing and come away with injurys that have kept them out for weeks. i seriously doubt you are a real football person because anyone who is would understand this. i expect you are a big man sat behind a computer all day and havent kicked a ball in your life. infact i doubt you are even a liverpool fan, your as bad as that lot from everton. Evertons players didnt complain, they played on and gave a very good account of themselves despite being a man down. they worked hard and never lost faith and in the end got overcome and as such should be commended on their performance.their fans on the other hand were an absolute disgrace, booing aplayer who genuinlly got hurt in a fair challenge that unfortunatly resulted in a red card for their player due to a bad ref decision, blame the ref not the player and then to top it off they show true class by throwing things at our players and berating them when they are near the touchline. they should be ashamed as should you for your comments regarding suarez. As far as lucas goes he does it every week.......as do hundrads of other players in every league in the world especially brazillians and what you do by pointing it out is take away from what was another solid performance in the center of midfield from the EPL's most improved player. i'm all for an equal view but at least point that out. terrible article from a probable evertonian or manure fan posing as a kopite.

  9. I write as both an Everton fan and a fan of football. I would like to take my hat off to the red fans here who are offering a fair and balanced view. Thank you.

The sending off was clearly a woefully awfull decision and even Graeme Souness stated that it was not even a foul. Equally disgraceful was the way that Suarez feigned injury. Non PC though it may be to say so it does seem that it is especially in the latino gene pool to consider cheating and play acting to be acceptable behaviour.

I would also doff my cap to Mr Dalgleish for once again being dignified and offering a respectful view after the game.

Like most Evertonians I am dejected about today. Its one thing (and bad enough) to lose a derby - but to have our opportunity stolen from us by a referee acting the celebrity again is especially bitter.

All clubs have their share of thick heads who take their partisan loyalties to riduculous extemes and wear their stupidity as a badge of honour. It only serves to diminish the game.

    Thanks for the balance

  15. Can i point you towards mu comment above urs, once again someone who doesnt play football discribes suarez as a disgrace. you have obviously never smashed knees with someone while playing football.....it hurts. can i ask, did suarez ask for the card to be shown? no. did suarez have to receive treatment and then spend moments on the sideline jumping up and down trying to get his leg moving properly. do yourself a favour mate go out and lay a game and when you smash knees with someone at speed come back to me and tell me that you just got back up like it was nothing. you arm chair fans are a joke, wouldnt know real football if it smashed you in the face. see you didnt mention the disgraceful way yours fans acted either......what a surprise

  19. It was never a red warning at best especially in a derby. Forget Lucas or Suarez reaction. Unless this was your first time watching football you will know that this is part and parcel of today's game and will be until UEFA take it seriously yet they would rather focus on cards for taking off your shirt. I do believe that Rodwell caught Suarez. As for refereeing decisions, the reds have experienced more than their share of poor decisions none more so than the decision not to send off kieran Richardson on day one as the last man. The penalty given against Carragher at stoke for a flop was also weak as was the decision not to give penalties against Upson and Delap. So..... Unfortunate for the toffees but I guess these things might eventually even themselves out.

I was wondering how long it will take till you start winding liverpool Fans up again. I never considered you a liverpool fan and I have enough evidence to support my belief but I leave that argument for another day.
After Spurs game you commented that you were glad that Kenny didnot use the referee as a excuse for losing the game and nowhere you praise Moyes for doing exactly that.
your dislike for Suarez is also from start had been well documented and although for few weeks you hid that hatred, now as soon as you seen is right time, you get at him for whatever reason. if other clubs fan call him cheat, you jump on it and stress that is right.
you started now attacking Kenny for his press interview and in this article attacking his tactics even though we beat them 2-0 and Everton had not once threaten Reina. you attack hi long ball.

Yes JK started his tricks, attack the main stars, attack the manager, praise everton, Manchester untied and whoever does notl ike Liverpool, soon start insulting fans ,Liverpool fans groups, abd banning deleting articles who defend the team and manager.

and finally read the interview he game to a Manchester webste after Liverpool beating Manu in ground attacking and insulting Benitez and xalling Gerrard a diver.

  24. I think the reason he got sent off wad more to do with the way he flew in at the height he did with studs showing if had connected with suarez it would have been very nasty, so he got a red for the intent not the outcome which imo is good refereeing or else all that will happen is you can go in for a dangerous tackle an not get penalised unless you break the guys leg in two and that's surely not what we want

Check the stats before the red card,I think you'll find they favoured Everton. Liverpool were shite until the sending off, and I'm convinced Everton would of beaten you, if the numbers had stayed equal. That's two games on the bounce now that Liverpool have struggled against so called weaker teams, as Wolves pummelled the red men in the second half. Liverpool fans will be happy as Larry to of gained the three points, but hand on heart,I've not seen Liverpool play one good game this season, these lucky result will not go on for ever, and I honestly don't think KK is the manager you lot thought he was.

  33. The tackle was fast and people cannot see the foul by Rodwell. Do it in slow motion and puase at 0:39. Rodwell at got the ball with his left leg, but his trailing right leg goes studs facing into Suarez's outside right ankle. Notice Suarez walking out lifting his right ankle. Ref Martin had a close view of this incident and it was a stupid play by Rodwell. He thought he could camoflage his whack on Suarez by playing the ball and the man at the same time. On another day he would have got away with that, but Ref Martin was alert this time and a lucky break for Liverpool this time. The television camera keep showing from one angle trying to make it look like it was a blatant mistake by ref and injustice to Liverpool. Only once does it show from the other angle. Do it in slow motion and you will see what actually happened.

  34. They will need all the coins collected to pay for the fine by Premiere league. It could have been a worst result like Spurs against Liverpool, if the Kuyt did not miss his penalty and the two that hit the psot and bar. Everton were poor today most of the game and Liverpool played better after two of their best players Stevie and Bellamy came in. Liverpool would have scored first early on when Saurez headed tamely to their Keeper. Then luckily Reina made a world class save to deny Cahil. Would have hated his goal celebration if he had scored. Don't think any Liverpool fans have thrown coins at him in the past for his corner flag routine. Everton decided to kick Suarez out of the game and got one sent off and a penalty for another stupid challenge inside the box. Should have got a yellow card for that challenge. In a Derby like this, the team that kept its cool won the game, as simple as that.

  37. Absolute tosh again Kanwar. The rules of the game state that regardless if the player wins the ball or not if the tackle is deemed dangerous then it is irrelevant if the ball was played first or not. Yes Rodwell got the ball but he was on the ground sliding in with his studs in the air and he followed through with his other leg, whether intentional or not he caught Suarez.
Another referee may have given a yellow, but all the players know Atkinson loves to give his cards out so why take the chance and slide into a tackle right in front of the referee. Rodwell is young and will learn from his mistake today, hopefully you will learn one day too!

I agree, the day we start having a go at players for showing pain if we feel it's invalid or worse still booking them for it (which I've heard calls for) we start To play a dangerous game, not only do players sometimes hurt themselves from how they land after avoiding a tackle there's also those occasions you take a knock and although you don't have a lasting injury it bloody hurts at the time, and there really is no way to judge another's pain. Its wrong therefor to blur the lines between responding to something real with a bit to much vigour and making up pain entirely when it's clear the tackle missed. Besides Everton were guilty of some borderline tackles later so I think it's just a case of those who kept thier cool won

A Shiite team doesn't usually dominate possession away from home against a decent side at a notoriously strong ground in front of passionate home support which was the case before the sending off so maybe hold back on the vitriol a bit. It was in my opinion pretty even before the red card and we can't know how it would of panned out, although Liverpool did seem to me to be more composed, and in front of a card happy ref that's usually what wins it for you.

  40. Great articel - and some good posts aswell. I hate people who defend a playactor like Suarez - take a look at him this season and you would find more than 10 times where he is trying to get a fellow proffesional pinalised. In Denmark that's caolled cheating. And to the few trying to defend the red card refering to the law - well read it. A red card is for the following :
    - serious foul play
    - violent conduct
    - spitting
    - denying a goal/goal scoring oppurtunity by deliberately handling the ball
    - denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity
    - using insulting language
    - recieving a second caution.
THAT's the RULES of the game. Rodwell PLAYED the ball - with the outside of his left food - no streched legs - to say it's a red card (or even a freekick) please ask Souness.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi

As a Liverpool fan I totally agree that it was never a red card, although if you leave your feet with any studs showing you are leaving yourself open to the Ref's interpretation. Do not single out Suarez though as that part of the game is endemic in football and is alienating many fans.
I would also like to question what our best side was. Lets not paper over any cracks by saying that yesterdays performance was at the level that will get us into the Champion's league spots. I am pleased that Carroll scored, but if you look at the game as a whole, he was once again very ponderous, devoid of intelligent movement and his hold up play and distribution were average to say the least. It's of no co-incidence that our most fluid play has come when he has not been involved. I know that Kenny has to give him game time to try and get him to peak fitness and improve his confidence, but how long do you persist, leaking points, until you start to play your best team.
By the way my best team would be:
    1. Reina
    2. Kelly
    3. Enrique
    4. Skertl
    5. Agger
    6. Lucas
    7. Adam/Spearing
    8. Kuyt
    9. Downing
    10. Gerrard
    11. Suarez

  42. Being a dane I have to say you were missing Agger - When not injured he is one of the best CD in the world - and really make Carragher look like ahh well ??  Suarez is the only one of Kenny's big signings I feel are good enough in the starting 11 - Adam is so slow allthough he can hit a ball. Still wish Suarez would stop playacting. AGree with you though that he is not the only one in the PL - even some english players has taken to it - something you would never had though possible

  43. Hey TrueKopshiteJust calm down will you. I am an Evertonian, guess what not posing as a red. You have better players - agreed, certainly when you look at the subs bench and the squad as a whole - no discussion.

The match was, well....OK difficult for us, but I was quite pleased in how we played for once - couple that with being a Derby and as in many such games in the past - the scoreline can and usually does defy the odds. The pemalty was a farce, your two mentioned players concerned in the event were a disgrace (and I shall not repeat them here as I am still gutted and furious) and like it or not Mr Truekopite (and Idoubt that) this fabulaous fixture was ruined - leaving a bad taste for all the blue's, we unfortunately loose a fair bit to you buggers, but after a week of ribbing, we move on. With me anyway, on this game, it will not be like that. We lost in a way that beggars belief to the blue side, because of one poxy cheating premadona - that is the way we see it. If it was all mirrored, what exactly would you be saying. Grow up and if you really were what you say, you would not even be stating this drival on the site.

We remained composed only NINE fouls in 90 mins of football against a team and FANS which were doing everything possible to get our players sent off WELL DONE TO SUAREZ AND BELLAMEY FOR NOT RESPONDING TO BEING BOTTLED AND COINED WHEN TAKING THE CORNERS!

You see - this is precisely what I'm talking about: this is a prime example of the victim mentality that is being cultivated at the club, and the flames are being fanned by KD.

The idea that Everton's players and fans were deliberately 'doing everything to get our players sent off' is not true at all, and any fair-minded person can see that.

When the manager is constantly being defensive and acting like the world is against the team then that extends to the fans.

  62. You lot are fall of shit,Cahill went in with a high foot, but so did Adams, the only difference is, that Liverpool have a team full of Pussies who go down quicker than Gerrards missus. Hibbert's challenge was foul, but no way was it a red. If it had stayed 11 v 11, there's a good chance them so called fouls wouldn't of happened, the sending off, totally changed the run of play, as Everton were more than holding their own before the dismissal (remember Reina's tip over the bar). So if any of you idiots think keeping Hibbert on the pitch evened up the decisions then your duluded, but we've come to expect that from the Liverpool fans. This is our year

    Boydyfivetimes

Liverpool fans are the only one's claiming it was a red (not all), even some of your ex players have called it an unjust sending off. 74. 100% agree with your proposed team selection and I think it's the 1st time I've seen anyone else offer the exact same suggestion to my own.

  75. JK. re; to Adam V Gerrard
I have been going to watch Liverpool since '66, and never have I heard such rubbish, insted of removing my comment, at least have the decency to reply.

  76. When you actually come up with a counter argument then maybe i'll respond. Just saying 'I've never heard such rubbish' is not an argument. It seems likely that the thread if my argument re Adam and Gerrard went right over your head anyway so you might as well just leave it.

  77. Hibbert and Fellaini were both lucky to stay on the park after disgusting tackles. This was only made possible by the ref's reluctance to send anyone else off (in a blue shirt). Rodwell was very unlucky, but Everton were anything but hard-done-by

  78. It wasn't a foul mate regardless of what speed you watch it at! Take your red tinted goggles off Suarez is a cheat! End of!

  79. Bazza what are you on lad? I'll give you hibbert but not Fellaini! Ye we were hard-done-by, by a poor ref and a cheating Suarez!

  81. Evertonians getting accused of making sick gestures regarding hillsborough, how low can so called reds fans go?! I know man utd fans have done it,but Evertonians wouldn't stoop so low end of! Hillsbrough brought Blues and Reds together as 1.We had friends and family invovled at hillsborough!

  82. There is no mention of a player playing the ball or not in the rule under question! It is a matter of whether the official deems it dangerous play....it is incidental if the player takes the ball first or not at all..

  83. Anything but hard-done - probably the most stupid comment on this site. The red card change the match - it wasn't a foul - and Suarez is a cheat. If you are so busy counting red cards there wern't given - what about little Lucas already on a yellow card - when making a proffesional foul - not talking about the tackles from behind given by the reff without awarding a card.

  84. Yes han he only deemed it dangerous as that cheat Suarez made it look like a challenge
