Last night, the 'Liverpool Daily Post' published an article about Alberto Aquilani containing a headline that suggested the Italian was publicly criticising the club. I (and many others, I'm sure) made a complaint to the Post about the nature of the headline, and now it has (rightfully) been changed to something a little less provocative.
This is the original headline:
Look at the wording: 'BLASTS' Alberto Aquilani?! How can that have anything other than negative connotations? It suggests that Aquilani had an angry state of mind when he made the comments, and that he made a point of highlighting Liverpool's 'poor form' in public. It also suggests that's he is selfish, and only thinking about his own form: 'Liverpool's poor form hasn't helped ME'.
Whoever wrote the original headline clearly interpreted his comments in a negative way, and (deliberately?) constructed the headline to make Aquilani appear in a bad light. Perhaps Ian Doyle's Sub-Editor is an Everton fan? ;-)
Here is the changed headline:
Completely different, and free of unfair negative connotations.
I highlight this (mainly) because I found it funny :-)
But on a more serious not though, given Aquilani has only been at the club for 4 months, this kind of irresponsible headline can be damaging.
What makes it more ironic is the fact that it came from a Liverpool-based newspaper. Last week, I highlighted the Liverpool Echo's very obvious witch-hunt against Ryan Babel; this week it's the Post.
Fans complain about the London media always painting Liverpool in a bad light, but the city's own newspapers seem to he equally culpable, especially when it comes to the club's players...
...unless their names are Gerrard and Carragher, of course.

Aren't these papers owned by the Mirror group now?
ReplyDeleteAgain highlighting and painting our beloved club in a bad light. Jaime Kanwar i question time and again if u r a Liverpool fan or... just someone wanting attention badly for his lame posts.
ReplyDeleteu seem to have plenty of time criticising every aspect of our club... from our manager... to our players... to our newspapers...
u live for the pure enjoyment of getting riled up reactions from the Liverpool fans...
i hope u live happy and die miserably... until u find peace.
Peace
Yes, you're right, they are:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.trinitymirror.com/our-portfolio/regionals/north-west/
They have Stan Collymore writing for them and hes another numpty!!!
ReplyDeleteSorry forgot to mention your completly right about this, the second headline would suggest Aqui is suprised by our form, hence the I didnt expect it to be like this compared to the other, which as you say suggests hes peed off.
ReplyDeleteThe Echo has gone distinctly down hill over the last 12 or so months. Good journalists like Tony Barrett have moved on to the bright lights of London, Chris Bascmbe sold his soul, he was a great LFC journo as well when writing for the local rag.
ReplyDeleteThe only people who I can bare reading in the press these days is Brian Reade, to an extent Ballague and sometimes Oliver Holt.
I think you will find both Dominic King and David Prentice are both very good writers. King has only been covering Liverpool since the summer.
ReplyDeleteI do know another so called journo who only seems to write negative liverpool posts......
ReplyDeleteYou also write similar sensationalist headlines too jamie. i.e. writing on "Facts" from you very wayward point of view.
ReplyDeleteHave a read of the titles of pretty much any and every Liverpool Kop article written by the hapless Jaimie Kanwar and then you'll see evidence of a real witch-hunt.
ReplyDeleteThat and a scam that is run to get hits to this site.
This site itself has more than enough sensationalist claims of its own to be criticising others. You keep claiming exclusives which aren't and analysis which isn't
ReplyDeleteat times i feel this blog is owned by the mirror too - the way it's sensationalistic. "critical realism" - more like "farfetched cynicism"
ReplyDeleteHaha. 'Far-fetched cynicism' - I like it.

Ohh the irony is laughable
ReplyDeleteis the echo an daily post production not now moving to manchester? need i say any more?
ReplyDeleteI think they are from different websites. The first is from the Welsh Daily Post website, the second from the Liverpool Daily post website (note the addition of Liverpool after Ian Doyle's byline).
ReplyDeleteBlasts is a poor choice of word, but it's probably not deliberate. I've a mate who works at the Echo and he said that they have internet journos who write the headlines for the web.
My mate said it is published at a printing press in Oldham but it is still put together in Old Hall Street
ReplyDeleteNobody has backtracked over this headline. As the last poster says, the first headline is from the North Wales Daily Post website, and is still up on that particular website.
ReplyDeleteIn the article, Aquilani says Liverpool's poor form has made it difficult for him to establish himself in the team. Therefore, Liverpool's poor form hasn't helped him so the headline is correct.
Critical realism? Liverpool are having a poor season, so the headlines aren't all going to be positive.
<span>Don’t you have anything better to do but criticise Liverpool Football Club, every article i read on this website degrades and belittles everything Rafa Benites has done for the club, look were we were 5 years ago to now!!!!!!!!!!</span>
ReplyDeleteThe first headline was on the Actualy Daily News website too - I know because I saw it there on the site when the sory was first posted. The Post syndicates its stories out, so that's why the headline is still the same on the Wales site - they just haven't cascaded out the change.
ReplyDeleteThe original headline WAS on the official Daily Post website. I know because that's where I first saw it. The Post syndicates its stories out, so when the story was first released, the North Wales version got the original headline too. They don't make up their own headlines - they post whetever the Liverpool based Daily Post sends them.
ReplyDeleteWhat has happened here is the change that was made by the Post has not filtered across to the North Wales version.
I'm not sure you know. Look at the two bylines. The screen grab of the first one is from the Daily Post website (which is the welsh edition www.dailypost.co.uk) and the second is from the Liverpool Daily Post www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that. The same headline was on the liverpool daily post when I first saw it. It has subsequently been changed on the liverpool site but not the welsh site. They are both owned by the same company. When the LDP story first went out, it also went out on the welsh site.

I think it's fair to say Jamie that most people think you're a joke, and a hypocritical one at that.
ReplyDeleteYou delete posts that don't suit you or your twisted manc agenda.
My mate works at the post and he said that it is a completely different operation at the Welsh Daily Post. So the chances of them producing exactly the same headline as the Liverpool Daily Post is very remote. It looks like you've read the headline on the Welsh post, complained and then seen a different headline on the Liverpool post. Easy mistake to make.
ReplyDeleteFor the last time: no - the Post headline was exactly the same. I have the LDP on my rss feed. I do not have the welsh version. I went to the LDP post page and I saw with my own eyes the title as it originally was. My mistake was not to take a screenshot at the time
ReplyDeleteFair enough. I'll ask my mate to ask in work and I'll report back.
ReplyDeleteMy mate said the headline was written in Wales only for the Welsh edition and the headline never appeared on the Liverpool website. He even knows who wrote it in Wales. The Liverpool Daily Post web headline was actually written by the writer himself.
