9 goals in one game? Anything Spurs/Defoe can do, LIVERPOOL can do better...

Spurs deserve a lot of credit for their fantastic 9-1 victory over Wigan on Saturday, but they weren't the first to achieve such a feat. Liverpool got there first in 1989, when Kenny Dalglish's scintillating side hammered Crystal Palace 9-0 at Anfield.

12th September 1989. Five games into a Liverpool's last championship winning season and the club was preparing for the sad departure of John Aldridge to Real Sociedad. That evening, Crystal Palace arrived at Anfield, completely unaware that they were about to be taught the mother of all footballing lessons.

Liverpool put on a breathtaking display of sublime attacking football and absolutely annihilated Palace. Eight different players got on the scoresheet and Aldo himself came on in the second half to score a trademark penalty in front of the Kop.

With 5 goals in one game, Jermain Defoe put on a fantastic display against Wigan, but once again, Liverpool got there first. In November 1993, Liverpool beat Fulham 5-0, with an 18 year old Robbie Fowler scoring 5 goals: 3 with his left foot; 1 with his right, and one header.

How the current Liverpool team could do with someone like Robbie Fowler right now...

  2. Yes - they beat us 4-3 in the FA Cup semi-final.  Fantastic game but the result was hard take, especially after putting 9 past them earlier in the season.

  8. You seem to have overlooked the fact that Jermaine Defoe also scored 5 goals in one half, now that's something you haven't done!

  14. What will happen to Benitez if Liverpool get knocked out of the CL and then lose to Everton???

  15. if that happens i bet the blind benitez supporters will look to blame everything but the manager.  again i say:  POINTS WISE WE ARE CLOSER TO THE DROP ZONE THAN THE TOP OF THE TABLE. and every week we are losing ground.

guus is out there now unemployed.  why not make a run for him.

  17. It does show what you can do when you play with 2 strikers and 2 wide players who can actually create things and aren't picked for their defensive abilities. Lennon and Kranjcar cost about 4M. That's less than half of Kuyt. And both have more skill and class on the ball than that carthorse. But hey, he works hard right. So we'll play him forever no matter what.

And Huddlestone and Palacios can actuall pass the ball forwards and not sideways and backwards, like Lucas and Mascherano. That kind of helps you out a little.

And if Defoe was at Anfield he'd go the way of Keane and Crouch..substituted and dispirited until he decided to jack it in and leave. Nice to see a side playing with 2 strikers and a genuine attacking winger in Lennon. They deserve to score goals. That Spurs squad would be mid-table under Benitez, yet Harry is looking like he can get them top 4.

  18. Defoe wouldn't get into the squad, cause Rafa isn't able to understand him, Spanish is the language @ LFCl now! If you speak English you're not welcome!

  19. Perfect, simply Perfect.
    Perfect analysys, simply perfect post.
I COMPLETELY AGREE AND SUBMIT YOUR POINT OF VIEW, but please mate don't shame Kuyt, because He's a striker, and not a right winger.
The dutch is working for the Club in an unusual role for him: Benitez has the faults.

  20. Fowler scored 5 in the League Cup...In the PL Cole, Shearer and Defoe are the exclusive club

  21. Huddlestone and Palacios? Pathetic when the chips are down as shown AT Anfield when you played us weren't they Spurs fans? Not so good at passing the ball forward when they're PROPERLY marked are they?  As to five goals in one half? Rush did that v Luton in a 0 - 6 battering for them in the mid 80's. Oh, and for all Spurs flair and ability going forward in that victory just WHAT happened when you played Wolves (twice), Hull at home, Stoke at home, Everton away and Villa at home? You were pathetic.  As to us? We won ALL those games bar Wolves away where at least we didn't lose and DESPITE such a great season for Spurs and doing so well? You're STILL behind us and that's why we WILL finish ahead of you..........Again.

NB What was it that total c*ck didn'tLiverpool.... say? Revel in the past - a little club etc? We're the most successful club in England end of.  I think you envy us don't you as Spurs haven't got and won't get NEAR us in trophy terms in the next century or so at least - you sad individual - no wonder you hate us prat.  Now fcuk off..............
