10 reasons why the Europa League is better than the Champions League (humour)

Dropping out of the Premiership race after three months of the season was bad enough, but Liverpool have now suffered the ignominy of being dumped out of the Champions League at the first hurdle. All is not lost though - the magical salvation of the Europa League awaits, and here are ten reasons why that competition is the real jewel in Europe's footballing crown.

NOT!

Are you freakin' kidding me?!

Out of the Champions League and the Premiership race in NOVEMBER?!

What a complete and utter embarrassment.

For those of you who insist on complaining, this post is an example of 'bathos', the definition of which is: 'An abrupt, unintended transition in style from the exalted to the commonplace, producing a ludicrous effect'.

This really is pathetic - I have to put a disclaimer in the title to assuage the idiots who have no sense of humour.

  2. but of course rafa is the perfect manager and there are no other ones in the world who could do a better job than him.  i mean look at how amazing he has gotten kuyt and lucas to perform.  they are so good they play 90mins EVERY SINGLE GAME!

sack benitez, get hiddinck before we get embarressed in the europa league as well

  9. wait wai wait.  you guys are seriously still behind benitez?!  the man is moving the club backwards.  and you know what.  even if we were winning i still have no respect for that man.  and incase you missed it here's why:

i have no respect for rafa after what he did to Hyypia.  the man spent a decade at anfield.  he is a kop legend.  in his final game (which meant absolutely nothing to us at that point.  we already had 2nd locked up) rafa leaves this man on the bench ALL GAME LONG!!! only brought him on for a measely 4 minutes?!!?!? are you kidding me!  screw benitez.  i have no respect for that man

  13. WHERE IS THE FLAIR? no not ric flair but apart from ngog and benayoun tonight not one player tried anything skillfull. It all stems from the 2 holding midfielers who both sit in the hole and play passes left to right and back to the defence. Lucas cannot play with macherano they are too defensively minded. RAFA has had enough time - I know replacing him is unrealistic as it would cost us too much but I for one have lost patience with the man.

  16. Firstly you don't just play people out of loyalty, Rafa tried to keep sami at the club but could not gaurentee him games.

Secondly I respect what Rafa he has achieved some great things in his career so far including La Liga Titles and a Champions League win with a poor Liverpool side.

I would stop supporting Liverpool if we end up like Chelsea sacking people left right and centre. If we are not in the top 4 by the end of the season I think it is safe to say he is gone, however that's not all I want we need to start brining in some significant Silverware and I think giving 1 or 2 more seasons Liverpool can achieve this under Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Haha, he has a good point there!

Its a shame to see this.. Right now Liverpool FC needs its fans to get behind the team more than ever. It is our confidence that is shattered. How will the belief return when our own fans have turned on the team?

One way or another Rafa won't be sacked mid-season. Its just not happening. So please, lets try to lift them and show we still support the team. We can make a difference and you all know Liverpool is more than capable of a long unbeaten run..but with the current state of their confidence and hostile fans? Its not helping.

  19. so you are saying leaving hyypia on the bench for 86 minutes in the final game of the season, and of his anfield career was a tactical move?!?! you do realise the win, lose or draw that game we were going to end up in 2nd place right?  after 10 years at the club he deserved the right to play every minute of that match.

  22. I could not careless to be honest 1 game means nothing in a career, one big final send off I do not care. however this isn't my view on the matter but it is a point of view that could be taken, you leaving on the bench for the last 4 mins to bring him on to a great send off from the fans, instead of being off the pitch at the end of the match. It's not as if he left him out of the squad all together.

There is one player who I really really liked as a boy, and that was God. What GH and PT did to him was disgusting, however people make mistakes I hold no grudges against either. I am sure every manager has done something similar. Alex Ferguson has probably done worse, Wenger, no one is whiter than white.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Please.  The players and the managment are paid obscene amounts of money and are pampered beyond believe every day of their lives.  Criticism goes with the territory; if they can't hack it, they can pack it in and get a different job that's not in the public eye.

  24. How can he promise 100% fourth place. This is the same man who wanted to sell Xabi for Barry, let Crouch, Bellamy, Finnan, Garcia, Keane and the one i can never forget, Dudek. Lets not even get onto the many and i mean many failures and if you need some remiinders click on this link. It's a joke but the man seems to have some kind of David Blain tricks to fool some.

  26. but look at all the injuries - how can Rafa be expected to do anything with such a small squad with all those injuries. And Debrecen have no pressure on them so they can play with freedom and flair, and Man City, Chelski etc. have demoralised the Liverpool players so much with all their spending so how can they be expected to perform, and Lyon cheated because they knew that Rafa would come back to win the Champions League this year if he got out of the group.

Plus, who can forget about those evil American's making sure that Liverpool can't compete with these giants of the world game.
To be fair, Rafa has done a magnificent job and qualifying for the Europa League is a massive achievement and more than Liverpool really deserves.  No other manager would've managed that accomplishment.  We're lucky that he managed to squeeze the maximum out of the squad to scrape by Debrecem twice and earn us those long missed Thursday night games.  Awww, the wonderful memories

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think Lucas is Ray Wilkins in disguise, the next-gen crab only seems to pass the ball sideways and still can't head the ball from 6 yards out. That was a peach of a cross from Kuyt right on his nogging and he did the same against Man City.
Totally agree with the comments above (re Masch and Lucas together isn't an option). Lucas needs to be replaced with Yossi or Aquilani to add some creativity and flair into a painfully slow liverpool attack.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't know why I actually feel personally embarassed by this debacle. The only reason why I'm with Rafa is for the general stability of the club. The last guys the owners wanted to replace Rafa with was Jurgen Klinsmann. Now we have no money to offer a new manager and very few existing players of quality. Maybe if Rafa goes Torres and Reina will follow. And where would that leave us? Up shits creek again. We got to stay with him. Plus it shows those pundit idiots that they can't dictate our club and tekl us how and what to do about big decisions at the club. We deal with our issues like a family and without the influence of those who want to sell a few papers or some subscriptions at the cost of our club. But Rafa that's the only reasons why I'm in your corner. You're losing the plot and you're doing it in public.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have to say, I'm just numb now. Where do we go from here. Thursday night football - that's where. Even tonight, that Debrecen bunch made us look good, and but for woeful finishing, nearly got an equaliser.

LIVERPOOL IS A RELIGION, and I get behind the team but I dislike Rafa Benitez and I'm feeling frustrated by this lack of quality, mediocrity in the middle.
It's the most boring Liverpool of the last 20 years that I can remember...
    I feel so tired..
Lucas.....while "20 milions'" man sit on bench..
20 millions of pounds for sitting our bench...
I believe that Jamie Redknapp has 100% right: Rafa Benitez manipulates the fans..

But We will nerver forget these words..

  41. Redhed - I was just listingsome of the "facts" that all the Rafa faithful will no doubt be spouting off tomorrow.  I personally went off of Rafa after I saw the 'tactical genius' throw away that second Champions League final against Milan due to his ridiculous stubborness.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything improving with Benitez and his affinity for 'work rate' over actual talent, and as long as the members of the Cult of Rafa continue to make excuses for him whilst gratefully accepting whatever little he delivers, I worry for Liverpool FC.  Leeds Utd's players were at least comparable to this lot when that club began to fall apart...

  42. we used to have to watch Liverpool play on Thursday's in the now defunct Cup Winner's Cup and UEFA Cup, after Souness destroyed our club and left us with a mountain to climb back to respectability.  The same position that the club will be left in by the time the Rafa move on and the Rafa-ites wake up (if they do actually stick around with Liverpool FC instead of following the Cult of Rafa)

  43. Rafa has taken us as far as he can go. dont get me wrong he has done brilliant but this team is now going backwards. The owners also need to go the situauation is just going to get worse and worse next thing u kno we will b struggling for a europa league place let alone the champions league. And if you think about it this squad is nowere near good enough to win the league. Except for Torres who we will lose if we have no champions league next season, Gerrard who is getting on abit, johnson and reina and mayb aquilani and agger when fit. our squad is very very average. Kuyt-does alot of running for nothing,Riera- sunshine player plays good sumtimes but usually does nothing and looses the ball.jamie c- to old now, skrtl too many mistakes, insua to young, aurelio does nothing exept a good free-kick now and then ,Benayoun good but not really lpool material, lucas-shit, mascherano gives away to many fowls could manage without him,    the list goes on we need money rafa doesnt know how to use it the yanks dont have it= them out some1 else in. time 4 change at anfield we were meant to be in stanley park within then next couple of years not going to happen eitha. Weve had alot of bad luck but last year we had alot of gud luk something needs to change or we will b liverpool fc the 10th place team in the league every year. maybe im wrong but if anything needs to change we need new owners desperatly!

  50. What a shame, our concentration and defending has effectively ended our title and champ league hopes.

I would disagree with you Jamie, we have not gone out at the first hurdle. What about the teams that didnt qualify for the champs league in august. They got dumped and now playing europa league.

I believe our major downfall was an over reliance on players to suit our system. Where as the bigger teams, man u, chelea and arsenal, they rely on a system and strategy more than the players. So the big teams can change players and they are not that affected. Unlike liverpool.

This meant losing Alsono, was always going to affect us. It is hard for anyone to change, humans are creatures of habit. Rafa wanted to change our style to quickly to a more fluid one and pass and move, thats why he got aquilani. Yet it takes time to change. and change should be done slowly.

If we wanted to stick to last year style of play, which was very effective, apart from the draws, then, we had to buy like for like with alsono, not many their - mayybe pirlo, xavi, carrick, benaga, this is pushing it.

i believe as in the europa league we have a great chance of silverware, and i would be happy with some silverware, look at arsenal, they havent won anything since 2005.

  51. So short a memory....it is only because of Rafa (and a lesser extent Houllier) that we have become so accustomed to CL football, and the later stages of CL football I might add. I remember the dark days of UEFA and CWC football, those were the days we'd go to France and struggle to keep the score down to less than 3! #

Going out of the group stages (like Man U used to do in their early forays into Europe all the time) is not a complete disaster......not finishing in the top four will be!

    ReplyDelete
  52. carrick,hmmm,dont think so fella.

    ReplyDelete
  53.  Keep Rafa At ‘Pool. Viva the Rafaulution!

    ReplyDelete
  54. tjmreds - your poor memory is clouding your judgement.
We have become accustomed to CL football due to rule changes, bringing in seeded group football and allowing FOURTH place to enter the competition, NOT because of Rafa.

We've also benefited from Sky making the Premiership the richest in the world, making Liverpool more powerful than our continental counterparts by default (for proof, look at the performances of ALL of the English clubs in the CL in recent years.  EVERY one of the 'big 4' has reached at least one CL final since Rafa arrived at Liverpool)

Rafa was just lucky to arrive at the right time, where the margin of error for European success has increased , and the task has become easier (enter tournament from 4th place, play revenue generating group stages against only one other traditional 'power', only three knock-out rounds to reach the final etc.).

It's amusing how the bar is adjusted downwards each time Rafa fails to clear it though.  If we don't qualify for the CL next year, supposedly that will become OK and actually a good thing as it allows the team to focus on the League exclusively.  Unless playing in the earlier rounds of the domestic cups gets in the way...

  61. Liverpool wont win the europa league at all, not even good enuff for that !!!
Rafa has been lucky so far with liverpool hes not a gr8 manager by any stretch of the imagination and he fiddles with the team like a chronic masterbater. To give lucas as many starts as he has is enuff reason to look at this guy and think WTF is he on !! Liverpool are heading for more heartache as long as this guy stays at the helm and as long as the yanks stay the owners !!  Not being a liverpool fan tho i really couldnt give a shit tbh....will always be the living on past history unless big changes occur !!? 64. Nothing lasts forever, and there comes a time peeps got to move on. Has anyone ever wondered why below par players @ liverpool go on to excel in other clubs. I think Benayoun, Babel, and co can hold their own in any club, yet they are subs in a club of average pplayers. I don't hate Rafa, but I dont think anyone that can't take responsibility for his failures should be at the helm of affairs of Liverpool FC

    ReplyDelete
  65. All our players have the desire, but have never this season had the full team to tinker with. I know its been said before but i believe with a fully fit squad we can compete for all challenges. Whether benitez is here or not. Its time the fans gave the team thier full backing, booing and slating does nothing for the team moral. Y.N.W.A
