What might have been: No 3 - Three players Liverpool FC SHOULD have signed instead of Alberto Aquilani

Liverpool's squad has clearly been weakened by Rafa Benitez's failure to adequately replace Xabi Alonso over the summer. As a result, the team is struggling. It didn't need to be this way though - there were players available Liverpool could have (and should have) signed. Here are three of the best candidates, all of whom were within the club's budget.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, let me clarify:

1. I do not doubt that Alberto Aquilani is a good player. I question the wisdom of signing someone who cannot make an impact for the first few months of the season.

2. By the time Aquilani is fit and has adapted to the Premiership, the league title (and quite possibly our CL chances) will probably be gone.

3. Liverpool needed someone in Alonso's place from day one. That hasn't happened.

4. Benitez did not need to sign an injured player; he *chose* to do this, despite knowing that this would weaken Liverpool's squad in the short term.

It's not like there weren't other options out there, and in my view, Liverpool should have moved heaven and earth to sign one or more of the following players instead of Aquilani:

Lorik Cana

Went to Sunderland for £5m (!), a price definitely within Liverpool's budget. A tough, dynamic midfielder who would have really shaken up the team. Imagine Cana in the team instead of Lucas...

Yoann Gourcuff

Bordeaux signed him from AC Milan for £13m over the summer. Skill, creativity and within Liverpool's budget. I wrote an article in April arguing that Liverpool should sign Gourcuff. Once again, we've missed out.

Alexander Hleb

I've been arguing for over a year and half that Liverpool should sign Hleb. Barcelona signed him last year for €15m, and now he's gone on loan to VFB Stuttgart. Why couldn't Liverpool have taken him on loan for the season with a view to a permanent contract?

I'm sure that if the club really put in the effort (or the priorities were in the right place) Cana could've been signed for 5m and Hleb could've been taken on loan for the season. Imagine how different the team could have looked.

Given the fact Aquilani cost £20m (installments + appearance add-ons) it is even conceivable that Liverpool could have signed all three players:

Cana - £5m (Who is he going to choose - Liverpool or Sunderland?!)
Gourcuff £13m
Hleb - Loan

Total: £18m

We could have been looking at a team like this:

------------------- Reina

Johnson ------- Carra -- Skrtel ------- Insua

------------- Masch ----- Cana

Gourcuff ------- Gerrard ---------- Hleb

---------------- Torres

or this:

------------------- Reina

Johnson ------- Carra -- Skrtel ------- Insua

Gourcuff ----- Masch -- Gerrard ------- Riera

---------------- Hleb

---------------- Torres

Or this:

------------------- Reina

Johnson ------- Carra -- Skrtel ------- Insua

------------- Cana ---- Gerrard

Gourcuff --------- Hleb ---------- Riera

---------------- Torres

With the likes of Kuyt and Benayoun also available, the possibilities are very exciting. Instead, our threadbare squad is struggling to keep its head above water, and as usual, there is a disturbing lack of real flair on offer.

I know one thing for sure - if we had signed Gourcuff, Hleb and Cana, Liverpool fans would be a whole lot happier right now. Most importantly, all three players would have been available from the start of the season, which would have made Alonso's departure a lot easier to deal with.

We lost out to Arsenal for Andrei Arshavin in January; we've now lost out on three players who would've undoubtedly improved the team.

Five years into Benitez's reign and we're still not prioritising the creative side of the team.

When is this going to change?

When are we going to have a manager that actively seeks out these kind of players?

  1. I agree. Why spend 20+million on 1 player who is injured. These 3 would of really changed our squad!

  2. Absolutely! It really sickens me that these three players were *available* and Liverpool were nowehere to be seen.

Cana for 5m is a no-brainer. The guy is a storm-trooper of a player and would've been fantastic, I'm sure.

Gourcuff is a fantastic talent and Hleb is experienced and creative, and for a loan spell, you can't get much better.

  3. Spot on mate!! I must admit with the exception of hleb i dont know too much about the other players you mentioned but i do agree with your argument that it is madness to sign a player who cant step straight in to the team now when we need him most.

I would have also looked at sol campbell ( who just joined notts county for nothing) as maybe an answer to the defensive problem we had early doors, granted he is getting on a bit but on a 6 month contract he could still do a job.

  4. Gourcuff was on a years loan at bordeaux from milan and they had an agreed price and first choice on him which they took up, so that dispels that rumour. Cana would be better than lucas allright so would cattermole, however aquillani will be better in the long run, its just a shame we're not coping in the short term. A few loan signings might still come in hopefully, van der vart, robben, zaki! with fixed prices if they're a success. find it strange that Nemeth was loaned out today.

  5. No - following football on a regular basis. it's not rocket science to figure out that these three players would improve Liverpool.

  6. Alonso was sold late and we didn't have any cash until alonso was sold AND BY THEN MOST MAJOR TRANSFERS HAD BEEN COMPLETED- The first choice on rafa's mind was FELIPE MELO but juve captured him...when gourcuff was available there was no cashand he decide to sign where he played on loan...no doubt that he's a talented player...Hleb would never have returned to premiership to play for arsenal's rival -

  7. I went on the game last night and like many of us I was devasted with the performance. This article appears on the surface to be quite logical and obvious, but im guessing in practise its not that simple to pluck these players as the gentleman above says in a "FM 2009" style.

We must keep faith, 6 points in our next two winnable games and things may look brighter tho!

  8. Whilst I agree that it is frustrating not to be able to play Aquillani from the start of the season, it is not as simple as getting the other three players in instead. Even if they could have been bought for the combined £18m stated in the article, there would have been three lots of wages to pay which we probably could not have afforded. There is also the possibility any new signing could have done a Nunez or Deggen and got injured in his first training session as well! It is a very disappointing start to the season but i think that everyone is getting a bit carried away in the press!

  10. Come on!!! Thats totally bollocks! There's a reason why Cana signed for Sunderland... No good Club wanted him, because he isn't top club material. Gourcuff is a great talent, but he has a huge mental problem. He once said that he is a bit scared when playing with stars like Shevchenko and Kaka, thats why he plays so well for Bordeaux but really sucked in Milan. The same woud probably happen here with Gerrard and Torres. Hleb is okay, but not better than Riera or Benayoun. I agree with you that we should have bought someone else, maybe swap Alonso for Van der Vaart and Sneijder, because those two really are quality players. But we can't change that now. I'm sure Rafa knows what he's doing.

  11. cana is a thug of a player and is more like masch then alonso, and with regards to gourcuff bordeaux had first option on him for 12 million pounds so even if he rejected them we would have to had payed a minimum of 20 million on him because he is now a fully established international starts for france, and is regualarly hailed as the next ZZ. Also, he would have probably gone elsewhere maybe to spain. Although we should have gone for hleb.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I disagree - Hleb, Cana and Gourcuff have been available or semi-available for months. If Liverpool had planned ahead properly and pursued all three ( or even just one of them) with the requisite passion, I'm sure one or all could have been signed.

And come on - Cana signed for Sunderland *after* being linked with Liverpool for months. Are we to believe that 5m couldn't be rustled up? Of course, we know this is nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The first player(Cena) looked absolutely shite, He would give about 200 free kicks away a season and get sent off every month.

Gourcuff looked nothing but average at best

Hleb would be a good move on a loan

Flair isn't gonna win us games. Garcia had flair, Morrientes had flair, and they scored a few goals but they would give the ball away too easy. Lucas is getting better by the match(he was unlucky with the og lastnight) and Masca is a beast.

Why are you so quick to slag off Aquilani before he has even played? The deal is done just get on with it. and try and write a possitive article about maybe how good johnson has been etc

  15. With our lack of strenght in depth...at this period that liverpool is struggling what will happen if SG8, F9T gets injured...surely DISASTER...

  16. 'Flair isn't going to win us games'?!

    You are joking, right?

  17. Cana is not 'top cluub material'?! Right. He was the captain of Marseille but he's not top club material?

Re your comment about Gourcuff's mentality - please provide a link to the quotes.

  18. Gerrard's not going to want to play anywhere other than where he currently is for more than a few matches, which pretty much means we're stuck in this formation, he's definatley not going to want to play defensive midfield like you have him in your 3rd teamsheet. I agree there were plenty of fit players that would have been a better choice than Aquilani, but would they have done the job Rafa wants them to do?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with you about van Der vaart and Schneider though - they would have made a diffference.

    ReplyDelete
  20. if you want to lift all lfc supporters, send LUCAS back to brazil, the man will never ever ever make a premiership player, he's a one paced player slow slow and slower, as a temp measure until aqualani is fit play kuyt in midfield,
put beniyoun on the right or give babel a decent run on the right, babel is much better suited to playing on the right, being right footed he's much more comfortable taking fullbacks on, he can go down the outside or inside, also on the right he has faster feet for dribbling in tight situations,

    ReplyDelete
  21. He wouldn't really be a defensive mid per se as we really do't need 2 defensive mids. Cana would've been defensive mid and Gerrard would play a little further up the field in the playmaker role, but also tuck in to defend when need be. Besides, it should've be about what Gerrard wants; it should be about what's best for the team.

  22. Hi,

    I agree with your comments.
At the opening of the transfer period I did not see a problem with Alonso or Mash leaving as long as the right players came in.
Enough has been said about the Alonso deal But what about Mash going to Barsa. Well lets look at this because I saw this and still do as the most profitable deal for liverpool. I am not looking at cash but players. I would see how much Barsa whant Mash and demant in return, Gia Assullin, Bosian Plus cash and an obtion on Kierrision for what they payed at the end of his loan period.
Also If I were Rafa I would drive round to Kenny's pick him up taking a Liverpool Number 7 shirt and go to Celtic and offer Kenny's old shirt number to Aiden Mcgeady. If Celtic are nocked out tonight they may be willing to sell. If the cash is a problem we could sell Riera as there has been interest from spain.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lucas is not good enough. Why can't this be accepted after 2 seasons? Because the almighty Rafa says he's good so the retards who lick Rafa's arse agree and ignore the reality on the pitch? Lucas is not improving. He is average dross every time he plays. As long as he doesn't f-up like last night he is supposedly improving!

Wesley Sneijder and Rafa Van Der Vaart should have been signed to replace Alonso. Both midfielders with experience and quality - exactly what rubbish Lucas Leiva lacks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, being captain for Marseille doesn't mean you can play in a top side. Patrick Müller was captain for Lyon for a long time, but he certainly wasn't the best Lyon player. I'm not saying that he isn't a good player, but if he really was as good as you think then surely a better club than sunderland would have bought him for 5 Mio. I don't think he would have improved our team, that's all.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You can add Stephen Defour to your list. But, for Benitez to sign up Aquilani when he is injured and will be out for the first two months of the campaign he must truly believe he can make a difference. However, someone should've been signed for the short term also so that we don't fall behind in the meantime. You are right that Loric Cana at 5m is affordable and for a while we were being heavily linked with the player. Why neither of these players were brought in is something that only Benitez and LFC management can say. What's happened to the money Benitez raised through player sales? Alonso (30m), Arbeloa (3.5m), Leto (3m) along with some kids and the money from the Keane (12m) sale account for over 50m. Spent: Net 10m for Johnson and 5m for Aquilani (his 20m is repayable over 4 years). Where's the remaining 35m gone H&G? Would we have had a deeper squad with these missing millions? You bet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fair enough. Don't you think that Cana's energy, physicality and brute force would have made a difference to this sluggish Liverpool side?

    ReplyDelete
  27. With all the respect but Benites has done it again. he let Liverpool down once more We`r not going to catch up now with the big four. He always rely on lucas.
I think its time to look for another manager like other club does like Chelsea. I think it was a mistake for him to bye an injured player like Aquilani cause the club needs him now and not later. please do something about it before its too late . thank you

    ReplyDelete
  28. Where was the money coming from to buy these three players?? we have only paid £5million up front for Aqulillani. WE HAVE NO MONEY!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bordeaux had exclusive rights to buy Gourcuff for £13m.

He wanted to spend another year there after advice from his dad (the Lorient manager).

He is in fact a £20m + player and was never available for any club other than Bordeaux for £13m.

Next year after the World Cup he will move to a bigger club for £25m +

Finally, you don't seem to understand what position the player plays.

Try a bit harder in future bud.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Glad that someone mentioned Defour. Pretty good play with lots of energy and a bit of skill.

Where's the money gone. You don't know that? The yanks had to pay back some of the loan, that's where it's gone. Leverage buy-out.

  31. Im an Arsenal fan and although it is too early to make a difinitive judgement Liverpools plight reminds me of ours last year. We established a fantastic midfield in a system that brought out the best in the whole team and lead us to a strong title charge the season before. However in the summer we lost a key component of the system Flamini, (Alonso) and the manager (LFC Board) foolishly refused to spend and tried to fill in for him with a player who was ill suited to do his job, Denilson (Lucas) hoping the system wouldn't fall apart, unsurprisingly it did fall apart.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, those are all the qualities that Masch and Gerrard have (plus many many more), so no, it would not have made a real difference, because what we need is as great passer, someone with creativity and game intelligence (That's where lucas lacks), something that V. d. Vaart or Sneijder have and probably and hopefully Aquilani too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. good players dont sign 4 sunderland and good players dont get let go by arsenal and milan without a fight ! jamie u r proper glawdys st material

  37. Yes - I would't have a problem having Cana in place of Masche for some games. Mascherano is overrated if you ask me, but that's another sory.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Can I just say that although following bad results it is easy to start banding players names around, you should do your research first. Gourcuff's price was a deal that was negotiated when his loan started at the begining of the 08/09 season; Bordeaux had first option on him, if they had chosen not to sign him Milan probably would have kept him - if not the price would be closer to whats been quoted for Silva i.e £20m+.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, lots or players look good on YouTube and highlight clips.

  44. Beckham should have been brought in on loan for the season as a stop gap. Before you say NO WAY! just think about it.

Alonso is different to most midfielders. He is not a box to box player and not a 'destroyer' type. He likes to operate in the midfield area and receive the ball and pick out a pass. Beckhams favoured position is central midfield and he can pass as good as Alonso and he's more mobile. He could also instantly fit in with Gerrard as they've played together many times for England.

    Makes sense to me.

    Are you on crack????

Mascherano is far from overrated, he is a machine, whenever there is some danger who will sprint like a lunatic and win the ball ?????

And Flair doesn't win you games, Goals do, you don't get extra points for step overs and piroetts. I'd much rather a player made the right decisive pass than the fancyest.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Easy to criticise - and even easier to get your facts wrong.

Gourcuff is indeed a fantastic player and would enrich the Liverpool midfield, but he was only "available" insofar as Bordeaux exercised the €15 million buyout clause included in the loan deal they had signed with Milan (who actually wanted to take him back). Bordeaux may have agreed to sell him onto LFC, but my guess is that it would have taken €30 million to even start talking. As for Hleb, I doubt Barcelona would have lent him to LFC - and I do not think he would be such an improvement on what we already have at Anfield anyway. Not convinced about Cana either, as I don't see where he would fit in the Liverpool team.

There may well be other players out there - possibly Van der Vaart - who could have provided more immediate solutions to Alonso's loss. Rafa clearly thought about them - esp. those with Real who could have been part of a swap with Alonso - and discarded them.

Rafa is a great manager, who has to rebuild a team that has lost its influential playmaker. This may take time - and admittedly may cost us gravely in the EPL race - but I am confident that we have potentially the best manager in the world to sort this all out and make LFC the best team in England and Europe.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Only problem is we couldn't have gotten Gourcuff for 13mil. AC Milan was trying to off-load him two summers ago and ended up loaning him to Bordeaux with a buy option of 13mil. After last season when he was the player of the year in France and won Bordeaux the title, they quickly made him a permanent part of their team for a fraction of his real value. Bordeaux made an absolute steal, but they were the ONLY team in position to make that deal. A more realistic choice for Liverpool would have been Steven Defour, the 21-year-old captain of Standard Liege.

  58. Well, sometimes I know better than Rafa and his scouting dept. When we signed Morientes I was shocked as he was, in my eyes, a player well past it who couldn't cut it at his club anymore and was loaned to the mighty league of France. Rafa and his scouting dept. thought he was great, which he wasn't. So, to suggest that Rafa and his scouting dept. know everything and never fail to sign an emerging star, then I wonder why none of the following players has so far been voted European footballer of the year: Voronin, Babel, Lucas, Degen (I could go on). When you think that Rafa and his scouting department know everything, well Graeme, then you are actually deluded (and blind).

    ReplyDelete
  59. According to your infallible judgement all of the players Rafa has signed are rubbish or not good enough. Well, until I read your comment I was quite pleased with a few of Rafa's signings like Alonso, Agger, Skrtel, Torres, Luis Garcia, Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  63. We should give this Jaimie Kanwar Rafa's job, he thinks he can do a better job!!
Its all good an well you showing us your formations with teams and what u think, but reality is, ur point can never be proven. So, when people like you make up these ridiculas articles u are assuming that everyone of the points you make will be a success.
Cana - havent heard a tap about him since movin to Sunderland so what make u think he will be a success with us??

Gourcuff - Couldnt do it with Milan so had to go to a weak french league to get a game. Why all of a sudden if he came to liverpool would he be a success?? He might take a few months to adapt, it took pires the best part of 2 years so you cant guarantee nothin.

Hleb - I actually think he would be a decent buy but he wouldnt be as good as gerrard behind torres so no point buying someone to break that up! He's similar to Benayoun but yossi puts more work in defensivly.

So Jaimie, you, like many other in the media circus are good at putting your point across believing it would 100% be correct, but isnt that what managers do when they buy a player who turns out to be useless. Find something better to do rather that writing pointless articles trying to have ago at rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Cana is perfect for LIVERPOOL he is very strong player and very smart too... so please RAFA do something to bring CANA in liverpool.

    Lfc for ever.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Signing Aquilani is not a bad move he is young and could be at the club for 10 years.

The fact is that if we are to believe the press Benitez had a cut price deal agreed for Silva and the owners would not cough up the dough. So its not like he is avoiding "creative" players on purpose, he has been chasing Silva for ages, and you could argue that he is better then any of the 3 players listed.

(Just to add to the list which we are at it Diego going to Juventus on the cheap was another bargain we missed out on).

    ReplyDelete
  66. Cut-price deal for Silva that the owners vetoed? Sounds like anit-G+H lobby making stuff up again to me.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anyone with alittle bit of common sense nows that spending 20m on an injured player doesn't make sense. Could have gone and got 2 or 3 of these players on loan for a year with the view of signing them permanantly if money was that tight. At the end of the day some Red fans have small memories. Rafa wanted to get rid of Xabi for Barry. Rafa treated Xabi very poorly in that time and that was something Alonso didn't deserve. Now we need a scapegoat and Lucas is the easy target. I don't blame Xabi for wanting to go.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'll conceed that signing an injured player was not Benitez's smartest move, but if the author thinks he has more knowledge and insight in the transfer market than Benitez and his team of scouts then he is clearly smoking some mind altering drugs. This kind of Liverpool article is not helpful and just breeds more discontent amongst fans. Regardless of our situation we should be getting behind the team and encouraging them to do better in the next match.

Try writing something positive for once.....

    ReplyDelete
  69. What level of management have you reached? what European trophys have you won? the answer is none stick to your fantasy football and let Rafa do a difficult job in a difficult period, the question all Liverpool Football Club supporters should be asking why no cash as promised for transfers, do you think Shanks would have stayed if treated the way Rafa as I dont think so

Rafa may have made a mistake in signing an injured replacement for Alonso, but what's done is done, I suggest you get over it (or for 24 hours until you write another article on the subject!)

    ReplyDelete
  72. So, using your logic, if an individual has no empirical evidence of something they cannot have an opinion? Great - that means we can never comment anything outside our own experience. No, that's not narrow-minded and insular at all, is it?

And it's amazing you actually believe the myth that Rafa has not had money for transfers! It really does amaze me. What about the 53+m he spent in 2009? The 38m he's spent over the summer? The pay rises given to Carragher, Gerrard, Kuyt at al.

Rafa has had PLENTY of money to spend; he has just used it unwisely.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Of course - if I don't worship at Benitez's alter, I must be pro G+H.

There is no evidence at all about an alleged cut-price deal for Silva being stopped by G+H. I want them out of the club as much as anyone BUT that doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated fairly. That means not making unfounded criticisms.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Liverpoll fans wanting G & H out is fair, what fainess have they shown to the Fans, Club or Rafa as for unfounded critism what about empty promises from the yanks we have had nothing but lies, lies and more lies, and as for picking the players Rafa should buy well what a load of rubbish every fan would be able to do that and pick the best team in the world but we are fans not the manager, as I said before stick to your fantasy football

    ReplyDelete
  75. Kanwar. This is a promise, not a threat. If I ever come across you face to face, I'll bleed you like a stuck pig. And that time WILL come.

    ReplyDelete
  76. ha jamie, agree that the money spent could have been spent better but if cana is the hard tackling midfielder i think he is , we already have one , mascherano. I do like gourcoff and ya he would have been a good signing but totally disagree about hleb. never liked him felt he was an average player for arsenal , very inconsistent and didn't really offer that much. think that some of benitez's mistakes were made last year not making a move for players like arshavin or ronaldinho who went for similar or even less money than robbie keane. also think expecting lucas to step up to the mark just because alonso left was being very hopeful by benitez, so buying an injured player was a big mistake. also can't see why players like vorinin can make the bench but players like nemeth arebeing loaned out and pacheco are being left in the reserves. also spearing is better than lucas so why cant he start, more heart and determination which we need at the minute

    ReplyDelete
  77. JK never writes anything positive about Liverpool don't know why I still read anything with his name on

    ReplyDelete
  78. Amounts of cash spent in the past lets leave that to old red nose, as for opinions yes we all have them thats why I ssaid all fans can pick the best team in the world but if given the chance they would all fall flat on their arses. The problem is Jamie and this is my opinion you are very very negative that you do our team a diservice stick to your fantasy 11 and support the team why not mention the contribution of Glen Johnson and lets face it a Rafa signing all the pundits disagreed with

    ReplyDelete
  79. Sure, it's fine to comment or give an opinion on a subject, however what you do is neither of those things. You go beyond offering your point of view, you are actually saying that you know better than the manager, if only Rafa had consulted with you prior to making any decisions, we would have won our first 3 games and we’d be sitting pretty at the top of the league with Chelsea.

  83. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. no i dont think so . you can not replace kuyt from the squads you picked

    ReplyDelete
  85. And do you seriously think Beckham would consider joining us on loan?

    ReplyDelete
  86. have you seen gourcuff play?he's definitely not a winger. Playmaker but don't have a speed. likes to control the game with his vision. kaka in the lower level.

    Conclusion : 13m for him?lol

hleb?good enough to sit on the bench

cana?know nothing about this player yet.

but overall, it's a good article.

  87. benitez should have gone 2 years ago. it's obvious that there is no moral in the squad. man management is definitely no his forte. furthermore, recuitment and relative policy is extremely poor and his track record is below average. to blame the american owners is merely deflecting blame. how much money did he have at his disposal last year. only two clubs spent more. get rid of him and get a manager who doesn't look for excuses and actually galvanises his players to want to perform. maybe it all starts with players knowing where they stand rather than being treated disrespetfully and like yo yo's ... robbie keen case in point !

    ReplyDelete
  88. Whether Bentez should have gone two years ago or not in not up to me to decide. I think he has had the backing of the majority of fellow Reds and I can't see who would be suited to take his place. Definitely not one Jose Mourinho.
What actually speaks against your call is that we were pretty successful last season finishing 2nd with a record points-tally. I doubt whether this could have been achieved if the moral of the squad was as poor as you claim it is, his track record was as poor as you think and he recruited only dead wood. You have a point regarding his man-management, though.

  89. If aquliani wasn't injured it would have cost us 30 million so i think it is a good deal

    ReplyDelete
  90. He's right, mach is the best defensive midfielder on the planet

    ReplyDelete
  91. Ok, we can bang on about who we should've got instead of Aquilani, such as Silva or exercised a swap deal option with Sneijder, Van Der Vaart, Huntelaar or even I wish Higuain in the mix. But this has not happened. We got a very good player in Aquaman, but won't get running for 2 mths or so.

Therefore, we have to utilise what we have. For me, Lucas is not what we need. He is supposed to be the link between Masch and Stevie, but is not up to the job. He doesn't think forward enough, passes sideways, and rarely gets into the box. He is not taking the responsibilty of owning the MF. This means that Masch has to compensate and drive forward (not his best attributes) or Stevie has to drop back into MF, leaving Nando isolated. Play Yossi behind Nando, Stevie MF, Riera on the left (much needed width) Kuyt on the right. Babel as a sub for Riera, Nando or Kuyt. Instead of Voronin, use Nemeth or Pacheco. Also, if you don't want to braek up the Stevie/Torres partnership, why not give Spearing a chance, Lucas has had plenty.

The players at are disposal are enough to keep us in the hunt until Aquaman is back, but we just got to use them right. But then again Rafa knows best, just frustrating that sometimes he doesn't experiment when things are clearly not working. Against Villa only 2 subs were used. Come on, be more reactive instead of waiting to 60 min al the time. Be braver Rafa and try some youngsters. I love Rafa, but sometimes he doesn't react enough to the circumstances. Still too cautious.

    ReplyDelete
  92. You've already told this to the media, Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Despite rafa making a few mistake in the tranfer market. He has brought in the best striker in the world, the best defensive midfielder, the best goalkeeper and the best right back. So get off his back

    ReplyDelete
  94. How would you know that? Have you seen every defensive mdifielder on the planet? I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I agree - we have the players to do welll, it's how tey're being used that's the problem. Benitez criticising players in public does not help the motivation side of things either. If the manager can't get the best oout of his players then it's usually a slippery slope from there to the exit door.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Exactly. I strongly disagree that Masch is 'the best defensive midfielder on the planet'. He is replaceable; we should have sold him when he wanted out.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yes, Rafa has brought in some very good players. I never denied that. If you read my comment in context you may have noticed that I am not on Rafa's back. Anyway, the best goalkeeper as you name him isn't even the best goalkeeper in his country or do you want to question the judgement of the manager of the current European Champions?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Jaimie, as much as I sometimes disagree with you and think that your opinions are pretty strong, I have to admit that it is kind of refreshing to have someone like you out there who doesn't buy into everything Rafa says and has maintained the ability do question things. Sometimes I have the feeling that the majority of fellow Reds would work great in countries like China, North Korea or the former Third Reich where only one opinion was permitted. Too many seem to think that supporting your team is the same as blind faith.

    ReplyDelete
  99. torres9, like your opinion on bringing in youngsters like nemeth or pacheco, i would love to give them a chance, think they just need a couple of chances starting some, coming off the bench in others to prove themselves. but here is the problem, benitez has no faith in the youths. this is just proven by his loaning out of nemeth again this summer to aek athens. is he going to get experience in the premiership there? No. is he going to become accostomed to playing with liverpool players there? No. So whats the point. I'd say bring pacheco into the squad but knowing benitez instead of doing this he will loan him out or sell him, this in my opinion is one of the most aggravating things about benitez, he brings in loads of talented youngsters but none of them make it in the long run (maybe minus insua who i think given a good run in the team could really establish himself) If we only made some use of these boys we may not need to make as many signings, and think what we would have been saved if we had put insua into the team rather than buy dossena, food for thought isn't it

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thanks Anteater. That's what it's all about - there has to be more than one view out there. Plus, I think it's important to try and make people justify their views instead of just blindly spouting generalisations like 'Rafa is great in the transfer market' etc. Challenging people makes them explain themselves, and that makes for good debate I think :-)

    ReplyDelete
  101. True, but Nemeth hopefully will get some first-team experience in Athens. I thinks that is better than playing in the reserves or being loaned out to Accrington Stanley.

    ReplyDelete
  102. We should have taken the money and spent it on a quality striker, rather than on yet another midfielder. The lack of options in attack is a bigger problem for Liverpool this year than a lack of quality in midfield - Gerrard and Mascherano would be a quality pairing, and another decent striker would cause defences problems, opening up space for Torres and Gerrard. We also should have bought Delph, as a long-term solution to our lack of quality on the left.

  107. I agree but by the time he starts playing we will be in the botom

  108. calm down calm down..this is our year!

    ReplyDelete
  109. u all retards lucas is a central midfielder and is very young who comes from strange brazilian league he is not a striker that can score all the time and keep ur mouths shut he has scored goals but u dont relise that because of ur hatfulness of him it takes time for a young midfielder to adapt to premier league after 1 or 2 years he will shine aswell but though now i would have to say aquilani needs to be fit he is extremley gifted and he will fire goals and play final passes straight direct unlicke alonso who works his way into the box he is gone the past think about present and future lucas future aquilani present but damn the injury cost us against aston villa

    ReplyDelete
  110. Aquilani is a centre midfielder just like Alonso. Gourcuff plays in the same position as Gerrard, just behind the striker. Cana is a solid player at best, he is certainly no better than Lucas. If Liverpool spent £5m on Alonso's replacement I'm sure you'd be writing a negative article about why we should have bought a proven replacement. Why don't you wait to see Aquilani play before you condemn his signing. Capello said that he was by far the most technically gifted player in the Roma squad when he was there (Totti, De Rossi included). Hleb doesn't play centre midfield either. Of the 3 I would have signed Hleb but as a left midfielder. Basically what I'm saying is that the article makes little or no football sense.

    ReplyDelete
  111. How do you know Cana is 'no better than Lucas'?

You shouldn't take the formations so literally - they're just a way of illustrating which players could be in the team.

The point is the attacking three could be interchangeable; they wouldn't be rigidly stuck in their positions.

And no, I wouldn't criticise a 5m signing; it's not about cost, it's about ability and impact.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Waiting for Aquillani to recover means the end of the title

    ReplyDelete
  113. sneijder should have been bought 15million is a fantastic bargain
i say buy vander vaart for a ripoff price madrid still have 150million to write-off
we have literally not spent a penny in the transfer window ins have equalled outs there surely must be some money hanging around

the sooner aquilani comes the better lucas is a disaster how far down the premiership do u need to go to find a teams midfield lucas would get into

    ReplyDelete
  114. Lucas does not deserve to wear a liverpool shirt full stop

  115. Rafa should try aurelio when his fit instead of Alonsio. I wonder when he is going to realize that Lucas is no good........ And why Benayoun just played just for a few minutes ?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Not sure about Hleb but would have taken the other two. Aquilani was the signing that did for Benitez in the end. 20 million pounds worth of player on the treatment table rather than on the pitch. If we'd had Cana and/or Gourcuff on the pitch at the same time, i reckon Benitez might still be in a job. Another striker to take the load of Torres might have been useful as well.

Hodgson somehow compounded the Aquilani mistake by moving him off on loan, which put paid to any chance of us ever recouping anything near what we paid for him. If you want someone to make a bad situation worse, call Roy.
