So much for Fortress Anfield! Even at this early stage, Liverpool’s crushing home defeat to Aston Villa is a devastating blow to the club’s title ambitions. The problem? Rafa Benitez's one-dimensional tactics and lack of an effective plan B. It's clear that if Liverpool are to recover and mount a serious title, important changes need to be made NOW.
The poor start to the season has nothing to do with fan-favourite excuses like lack of money; the influence of Hicks and Gillett or injuries - Benitez has simply failed to utilise the players he has in the most effective way possible.
This needs to change, and the first thing that needs to go is the 4231 formation.
I’m not suggesting that it doesn’t work; it does, but only when you have the right players. The plain fact is that without Xabi Alonso - or someone of comparable talent – 4231 is just not effective, especially with the sub-standard players with which Benitez has padded the team.
When a team loses one of its most important players and fails to replace him, regrouping and solidifying to cover the absence has to be a priority. This means aces in their places; familiarity over disparity and tried and trusted methods.
But this is obvious, isn't it?
The hole left by Alonso needed to be filled effectively from DAY ONE of the season but Benitez singularly failed to do that. He instead choose to spend 20m on an injured player who will not even be able to kick a ball until October.
I argued at the time that signing Alberto Aquilani was a mistake for this very reason, and that the league challenge could be over by the time he makes his debut. Well, it looks increasingly like this nightmare scenario could become reality.
Alonso's makeshift replacement, Lucas Leiva will (predictably) come under fire for his role in the defeat, but he is not to blame. The Brazilian tries his best but he cannot be expected to immediately excel in a role he has rarely played since arriving at the club. It takes time to build a successful midfield partnership and you can count the number of times Lucas has played with Mascherano on one hand.
This uncertainty, inexperience and unfamiliarity at the heart of the team is causing a real problem for Liverpool, and it’s clear that without a strong midfield behind them, the Gerrard-Torres partnership is pretty ineffective.
Liverpool and Benitez have simply not adapted. What makes this worse is the solution was/is glaringly obvious:
Move Steven Gerrard back into midfield.
This should have happened right from the start. Indeed, in two of the three games so far this season, Benitez has been forced to move Gerrard back into midfield at some point anyway, so he’s obviously aware of the problem.
Starting the season with an untried, untested midfield partnership of Mascherano and Lucas was, quite frankly, bordering on negligence, especially when Mascherano and Gerrard have played together *effectively* many times in the past.
Opposing teams fear a midfield that contains Steven Gerrard; does Lucas instill the same sort of anxiety? No. As such, the psychological battle is lost before the game even begins.
With Gerrard playing deeper, Alonso's loss would be mitigated by the Liverpool captain's playmaking abilities, i.e:
1. Expansive passing range
2. Linking midfield with attack
3. Ability to retain possession
4. Ability to bring others into the game
All were/are staples of Alonso's game, now conspicuously absent from the heart of the team.
The Gerrard-Torres partnership is undoubtedly important to Liverpool BUT it is not the be all and end all. There was actually life before their partnership, and - in my view – if Liverpool is to recover from this damaging start to the season, the following changes need to be made:
1. Switch from 4231 to 4411
2. Move Gerrard to central midfield
3. Move Yossi Benayoun to Gerrard’s role, just behind Torres
4. Play Albert Riera on the left whenever possible.
----------------------- Reina
Johnson ------ Carra --- Skrtel --------- Insua/Aurelio
Kuyt ------- Gerrard ----- Masch -------- Riera
-------------------- Benayoun
------------------------ Torres
Benefits:
1. Moving Gerrard to midfield solidifies the heart of the team and reintroduces some of Alonso’s qualities into the fold.
2. Benyoun’s natural position is just behind the striker; he has proved this season and last that he is more than capable of playing there. It is a natural solution – playing him on the left imbalances the team and wastes much of his talent.
3. It’s obvious, but Albert Riera brings balance to the team. What is the point of having him if he doesn’t play? It’s possible that Benitez is planning to sell Riera, which would explain why he’s not playing. I don’t think that’s a possibility, which makes his absence even more mystifying.
4. This team can still switch to 4231 when necessary, i.e. when other teams try and overrun us by flooding midfield.
----------------------- Reina
Johnson ------ Carra --- Skrtel --------- Insua/Aurelio
------------- Gerrard ----- Masch
Kuyt --------------- Benayoun ------------ Riera
------------------------ Torres
In the formations I’ve outlined above, every player is arguably in their natural and strongest position - aces in their places; bags of experience and no square pegs in round holes.
At present, Liverpool has no plan B. It’s 4231 with Gerrard behind Torres or bust. Well, the team above IS plan B, and it needs to be implemented as soon as possible.
Gerrard may not want to move back into midfield, but what’s best for the team has to come before what’s best for the individual.
There's no time for stubbornness or inflexibility - If Benitez persists with 4231 in its current form then I have no doubt that Liverpool’s title challenge will be over before Aquilani has even kicked a ball.
Conversely, if the change is made now, there could still be a chance to salvage some kind of title challenge.
After two defeats in three games, there's no more room for error.

last night my dead gran could have played better than Yossi, and most others, never seen so bad passing since I played meself! :(
ReplyDeleteI think you got a point here. I not always agree with your articles and comments but today I fully agree with you about our formation and the fact that Lucas cannot fill the boots of alonso by any means. I agree also buying aquiilani wasn't the best solution. We don't buy a player that cannot play. Then when he starts playing the league race is already over. We should have addressed the alonso problem since long as benitez was fully aware that alonso wanted to move on since...May. Great article Jamie Kanwar!
ReplyDeleteA shoot-myself-in-the-foot article (if this is what it is supposed to be). You ask for plan B and offer nothing yourself. Most probably because of a lack of football knowledge (not the number of matches played per player per year thing).
ReplyDeleteA team plays 4-2-3-1 when it can only attack in numbers and not by lightning two-players counter attacks (cue Man U - Arsenal)...we havenot got the players for this...they cost a lot of money and play for real madrid and barcelona...
To conclude the formation is not the important thing here. It is the players available. We do not have these players, because we cannot afford them...Unless we have another McManaman!!
Onto the players...the squad is not ticking because we lost the brains/metronome in the team (alonso). Gerard is no such player, he cannot play to the strength (more importantly the weaknesses) of his teammates.
Great article. you made a point. Rafa R U listening??
ReplyDeleteYou've completely missed the point - the whole article offers a plan B, or did you decide to skip that part? Plan B is move Gerrard to midfield and Yossi into the link-man position.
ReplyDeleteSad But True
ReplyDeleteI agree with you - Agger should sometimes start ahead of Carragher. it seems that, sadly, he could be developing into a weak link for Liverpool at the moment. His limitations, both defensively and offensively have been exposed so far this season. Carra is top player though, I'm sure he'll sort it out.
ReplyDeleteLast ngiht was a disgrace, the football was shocking, it lacked tempo, drive & ambition, Lucas has to accept the blame for a lot of that as he slowed down the game with cautious square passses. Rafa has also been let down by senior players, Gerrard & Carragher have started the season in very poor form, Skrtel & carra are a mess together! A plan B is required but its not your plans B.
ReplyDeleteBringing the likes of Babel 7 Vorinin was a waste of time, we need money for new players by next week or we will be out of the title race by Halloween!
I think Rafa has a lot to be blamed for but the simple facts are that he is not getting the money
Not getting the money? What about the 38.5m he's spent this summer, or the 53m he spent last year (Keane, masch, Dossena etc)
ReplyDeleteRafa has had the money - as I've argued before, he has not spent it well enough!
The owners are not to blame here. That's the easy way out. They do not choose which players to buy, or pick the team or choose the formation. Benitez is responsible, so let's not pass the buck.
Jamie, do you hinestly think that Sotirios Kyrgiakos was a first choice target? We can all do the maths regarding the money rafa has spent but in fairness he has always had to sell in order to buy & has never been given the funds to develop the squad as he would like.
ReplyDeleteDo you think he wanted Riera over Milner? Do you think he really wants to hold onto both Dossena & Vorinnin?
I am sorry mate but if you look at our bench last night you will see that the owners are to blame, we need money.
As the state of the club I actually blame David Moores whose lack of leadership & acumen has set the club back years!
Carra surely is a very committed player and plays with a lot of heart, but this doesn't make him a top player. So far he managed to make up for his technical inabilities with that extra bit of determination and he may yet recover from his current form for the time being, but he won't be first choice for too much longer.
ReplyDeleteZelemon - I agree with you about Moores, but Rafa has had plenty of money to spend. Did he need to sell to finance Torres or Mascherano? No. He didn't need to sell Alonso - the player wanted to leave so there was no choice.
ReplyDeleteThe problem here is what Benitez chooses to do with the money he *does* have. Did he need to spend 20m on Keane? No. Did he need to spend a similar amount on Aquilani? No. he could've bought a player who was *fit* and could contribute from the beginning of the season, but he didn't. Consequently, the team is weakened, and Liverpool are paying the price.
I agree with you about the lack of decent options on the bench, but let's not forget that Benitez signed all those players!
Lucas does not add anything to liverpool fc ..
ReplyDeleteWe must stop looking at Alonso he is gone!Yossi was useless on left wing last night and Lucas should not even play in the reserves side...!!!Babel and Voronin did better when they got on!I agree drop Gerard back in the midfield but give babel a chance one game can't descide his future otherwise there was a couple of players last night that should go or sit on the bench. And Pepe should start pulling up his socks that corner that resulted in a header was more than stoppeble! He should leave his attitude at home and play ball! And when they mark out Torres and Gerrard can't the other 8 guys on the field improvise and ppush in one or two midfielders when we get into their box to either open up Torres or Gerrard or have a go themselves!Benitez should wake up and take it like a man if he made mistakes and put the correct guys on the field and change the formations so it works better!Well done Torres Gerrard Masch Johnson and Kuyt with the little you tried to make something with!
ReplyDelete38.5 shud also include a replacement to the team plus make the reinforcement
ReplyDeletestrog...he got no money, all was availabe frm the players he sold...
he shud get a 15 more..

Yossi Benayoun is not a left winger! No wonder he's didn't play well - that's what happens when you put square pegs in round holes. We have Riera to balance the team on the left but benitez doesn't even play him. 5 years into Rafa's reign and we're *still* suffering because the wings have not been sorted out properly.
ReplyDeleteHe does add...failures...he shud be kicked out the way Anderson is going to
ReplyDeletebe from manU..

Jamie...benitez must always sell before he buys...he's always forced to go for the 2nd choice when the money-makers have stolen 1st choice...
ReplyDeleteU talk about having not bought aquilani...but who is cheap in the market that is willing to come to england...
I think we agree on a lot of the points but niot the detail, my point about the bench is that Rafa had to sign Vorinin & use Kelly & Ayala due to the lack of funds available. I know what you are saying about Torres & Masch but they happen to be two players who have justified their price tags! I think the Keane signing is questionable, Rafa wanted him but not at the price Parry paid for him so you may be too hard on Rafa there!
ReplyDeleteI agree that the aqua signing seems farcical from here epecially as Lucas has had two awful games where he has been outclassed in every way by his opponents. Given that van Der Vart & Sneijder were available I think Aqua could prove to be Rafas 'el hadj Diouf'
Is it me, but do the players look unfit?
ReplyDeleteNear the end of the match, Carragher was bent over double trying to catch his breath. I know he worked his socks off, but he looked like he was a Sudnay league player. He is not the only one who looks short of sharpness and fitness.
I know our lads have had a few knocks (JC, Skrtel, Torres), but I am really surprised by this. Do you think the extensive travels to Asia before the season has meant that they have come back a bit jaded?
Was Aquilani second choice? Not according to Benitez. The player Liverpool should have bought is Lorik Cana from Marseille. He went to Sunderland for 5m (!) and is a fantastic player. The only reason he's gone to Sunderland (IMO) is to prove to the big boys he can cut it in the premiership before looking for a move. I have no doubt that this time next year, he will be at Arsenal or Man U.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else I want our current owners out simply for the fact that they bought the club on borrowed money which we have to pay for now and lack of funding for a new stadium. But to be honest I am not keen on having a sugar-daddy owner like Chelsea or Man City. The club should life from what it generates and sooner rather than later this kind of rule will be introduced anyway. Let someone fund the stadium and pay that fund back by selling the naming rights and the additional revenue, but don't ask for some rich bloke to fund a team of world beaters. I prefer the Arsenal way and condemn that of Real Madrid (it won't take too long until some EU money has to save them again), Chelsea or Man City. We've always built our success on clever management, good buying policy etc. and I don't understand why so many people long for that rich sheik to bankrole everything. This is far far away from the tradition of our great club and we should not lose our roots.
ReplyDeleteWhat harm will be done in bringing in the reserves Jay Spearing/Pacheco to replace Lucas in the middle, it can't be any worse than it already is anyways.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right, and I also think this was evident in pre-season. Liverpool flew hal-way round the world before the season started and had very few really competitive games, and I think this has affected preparation for the new season in some ways.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a good day, Jaimie, as you continue to make valid points.
ReplyDeleteRiera is an automatic choice for left winger... I've been crying hoarse about it. Wingers are an endangered species and he seems to be a good one! Why isn't Rafa using him?
ReplyDeleteWe can even accomodate Babel as a striker (his preferred position) behind Torres and playing 4-1-3-2 with Gerrard on the right wing, Benayoun in the middle and Mascherano as the holding MF... But as all these schemes have no place for Kuyt (on the right flank), this is never going to happen as long as Rafa is there... I suppose we can blame the owners for this, if they were a little more sincere and our boardroom wasn't in such a disarray, they'd chuck Rafa out and get someone like Frank Rijkaard. Now there is no one with enough authority or interest to challenge Rafa.
It is embarrassing that we play with a lone striker and two holding MFs at home... I don't want to lose all hope so early into the season, but this season too seems like trophy-less one.
Totally agree, Anteater. I don't want a Chelsea/Madrid/man City situation where trophies are bought. As you say, this is not the Liverpool way. Like you, I love the way Arsenal do things. I don't want trophies for trophies sake; I want the team to play good football and win through good mangement and using the right players effectively.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, we have the players to be doing better than we are, they're just not being used well enough and, for some reason, they're not motivated enough. Both of these problems are the fault of Benitz and the players themselves, not Hicks and Gillett.
Well, there's a first time for everything 8-)
ReplyDeleteSpot on, A Red. Riera has to play. it reall irritates me that we have a natural left-winger and he rots on the bench. Gerrard on the right wing is another possibility, but first we need to stamp our authority on midfield again.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Rafa's 'fear' was that Cana was a bit unproven... At 5M though, it would have been a minor gamble. I thought Riera was injured for the first game of the season?
ReplyDeleteMoney is a factor but I reckon Rafa has made Houllier-esq errors this summer. If the reports are right and we only had 20m to spend then the Aquilani signing is a big gamble. Its up there with Douf and Cheyrou. For me there is an element of risk in 20m for a player who wouldn't be regarded as being in the top tier of european talent (we didn't exactly have to see off any competition for his signature, did we).
ReplyDeleteInclude the fact that he's not fit until October, and common sense tells me that we won't see the best of him until xmas. On current form who knows what shape we'll be in by that stage.
Hi, I am a long-time reader, first-time commenter, just want to say that I don't participate in the discussions on this blog because they get sour very fast. However, this article has hit the nail on the head. This is the same thing that I was saying. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to see how Aquilani will fit and I am sure he will be fantastic. The point is why is it so sacreligious and stupid to think that Gerrard should be moved back to central midfield at least till then? It is his most natural position and he plays best there no matter what anyone says. The fact of the matter is he has started coasting through games which I found shocking! The tackle Gerrard made on Reo Coker was not even needed! A rookie tackle which we would have hanged the likes of Lucas for! It is about time we stopped looking at everything to do with this club besides the tactics and match reports. Now is when we only talk football and not signings, other teams and finances. If I wanted to talk money I'd go work in a bank! Please Jaimie, take this suggestion into consideration henceforth. Write more about the games rather than other activities because this is one of the best stories you have written in months and for once it seems .
ReplyDeleteI agree with some of what you say, but not entirely. The problem last night was not Lucas or Mascherano's quality in starting attacks it was what happened in the final third of the field. It was far too congested. Kuyt and Benayoun kept coming inside which meant that Villa could defend narrow as they didn't have to worry about either of them going on the outside to the by line. Glen Johnson provided this on occasion but there wasn't much down the left. In fact the one time Insua did attack and we got the ball wide on the left, Torres scored. With the lack of width Villa could double up on Gerrard and Torres. So even when they got a sniff of a chance they had two men around them. With Riera in the team we have better balance as he stays out on the left keeping a full back wide, giving space to our men in the middle.
ReplyDeleteI think we're also overstating the effect that Alonso had. Yes he could pass a ball 60 yards, but most of the time he played it simple. He along with Masherano broke down play and passed it simple. Lucas can do this, and he did do this yesterday. He made one mistake yesterday. albeit a very significant one, and that was the o.g. Other than that I don't think he had a bad game. I'm afraid a lot of Liverpool fans are making him a scapegoat when the team doesn't do well. In the same way we are not a one man team when we win, surely it can't be down to one man if we lose.
The other problem I have, and I noticed it against Spurs, is that Torres is getting bullied by defenders and then spends half the time moaning about it. Rafa was quite right to say that he should just get on with and doing his talking by scoring. But by congesting the middle with players that cut inside we aren't giving him the space he needs to thrive.
Its fairly simple, we don;t need to start moviong players about, or even a Plan B. We just need width. Stretch the play and giev sapce to our men in the middle. If we do this we are good enoughto beat anyone, so don't even need a Plan B
At the end of the day, we gave away an og and a penalty. We didn't play well in the first half, but if Gerrard/Benayoun/Torres scored in the scramble in the first half it would have been a different game. In the seond hlaf we played a bit better but Villa defended very well and Friedel made some good saves. You have to give them credit fot that. Once they went a goal up it played into their hands nicely as they are a counter attacking team
I agree that the 4231 must go. But I suggest a 3142-formation instead.
ReplyDeleteReina
Carragher-Skrtel-Agger (Aurelio until Agger is fit)
Mascherano
Johnson-Gerrard-Benayoun-Insua
Torres-Voronin (or Kuyt or Babel)
This formation means that the best eleven players are used and the play in positions that suits them.
Ok, the three at the back might need some time to adjust but they are intelligent players and should cope. Carragher is versatile and have been rightback so he will be able to be a right defender in a three man formation. Agger is left footed and can surely play in left defender position.
3142 gives the team balance. Three strong defenders plus Masch to handle the oppositions attack. Most teams counterattacks in the middle so there is plenty of cover in the early moments of the attack. If it continues Insua and Johnson have time to track back and help out. The main point with their positioning is that they can focus on attack, their best quality. 70-30 instead of todays 40-60.
In the middle Gerrard and Benny sets up our attacks with their clever passing game, long and short. Voronin plays just behind Torres. Voronin is underrated. He has got game intelligence and an eye for a slick pass in to the area.
3142 means that we are strong in defence whatever the opponents throws at us. We can regroup quickly from attack to defence. The formation also means that we can attack in numbers and from all angles. The six attacking players has the ability to switch places so the attacking options is countless.
Another good thing is that the players on the bench can fill any void in case of suspensions or injures. The defence can easily be reshuffled. For instance: Darby, Carragher, Agger or Carragher, Agger, Aurelio and so on.
Nice idea, Terry. I agree, 3142 would give the team some balance, but it's an unfamiliar system, whereas 4411 is a very familiar system. how much further would we fall behind whilst players are trying to get used to the new formation?
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Carragher needs to go. Agger + Skrtel are first choice. Its blindingly obvious. Carra's distribution forward is always LONG BALL, he CLEARS THE BALL if he is under the SLIGHTEST of pressure.
ReplyDeleteU want to win the title, u need centre backs who are not just "safety first". U need them to be able to slide the ball around and come up alittle so your midfielders can push up. i.e. JT, ferdinand, gallas.
Carra cant do that. He can only pump the ball up. Now he cant even defend against set pieces, his marking is so so weak.
It's easy for people to say Gerrard should be in midfield. Once Gerrard was pulled back into midfield last night he cost us any chance of a result. He made several reckless tackles including a terrible one which had he connected may well have led to a sending off. This came about 10 seconds before the equally stupid tackle which led to the penalty. He recklessly lost possession all night.
ReplyDeleteWe had bad luck last night but the game was lost for several reasons.
We lost practically every 50/50 ball in the first half. We were unable to keep possession of the ball under concerted efforts from the opposition.
We displayed poor mental strength. The desire to win is such that as soon as things don't go well too many players lose focus and start to do stupid things. Sadly Stevie G (not for the first time) showed that sometimes the desire to win unhinges him. Under pressure he can come up with the impossible but sometimes like last night he loses it. Too many of the players can't deal with the pressure of trying to win games when teams work hard, deny us space and sit deep.
We don't have enough enough top quality players operating in the final third of the pitch. And when things go wrong the bench is almost useless.
We miss Alonso and clearly not having his replacement available for two months is bad news. Rafa has had a fair amount of stick for this. Clearly he things Aquilani is the answer. His other alternative was to recruit what he may have considered a lesser player. His option was to make a short term decision or consider the long term and wait a little longer.
Rafa has a lot of work to do. With the current squad it's hard to see how he can win the Premierhip title this season and one suspects with the Americans in charge it will get less and less likely each season.
If as some people suggest we replace him, I can't see a Manager on the planet that could win the title with this squad and the current budget.
My main fear at present is not whether or not we will win the title but whether we will finish in the top 3 or 4. If we drop out of the top four then Liverpool FC as we know it may change forever.
Hi Jaimie!
ReplyDeleteI think a new formation could work out pretty quickly. Especially as the right players are used and they can concentrate on what they do best. The 4231 didn´t take so much time to click in to gear. So a new system can be introduced. It is hardly rocket science. And even 4411 would take some time to adapt to. The Liverpool players are top members of their trade so they sholud be able to progress and change. And I think they can. The title will be tough to win now despite all the talk of early days etc. So why not try out a new formation, at least against lesser teams at home and be ready to launch it full scale come next term.
If you have the suitable players (we have it now) then I think 3142 is the most effective formation in football nowadays.
There's very little difference between the 4231 and the 4411 that various people are putting forward. Its pretty much the same thing. Its a fluid formation. When we are defending it becomes a 4411, and when we attach, Mascherano and Lucas sit back, allowing Kuyt and whoever is on the left to go forward to make it a 4231. However, which ever way you want to look at it, it won't work unless we have width.
ReplyDeleteBenayoun is not a left winger but he still needs to utilise that space more effectively. Take on the fullback, take him to the byline, and then come inside. By coming inside too early it congests the middle. Riera should be the first choice as he had a left foot and its easy to say that he should have played last night. However, we beat Stoke with the same team as yesterday and Benayoun was effective. If Rafa had then started with Riera instead of him, then we would have moaned about that too.
There is nothing wrong playing with a 4-2-3-1 formation when teams are playing 10 men behind the ball provided you have the appropriate 2 in midfield and we don't. Masch has been trying to get on the ball more but he is uncreative and his range and quality of passing is poor. Having said that, it was his defensive game that he was brought in for and not his attacking game. Lucas cannot do what Alonso has done and it is harsh to expect him to do so- they are not like for like. The midfield doesn't have the guile or imagination or the drive to unsettle teams who sit deep. The solution is to drop Lucas and not because he is poor as many have argued but because he is the most expendable of the 2 central midfielders. I agree that with the current players available no one can fill the vacant position better than Gerrard. If we want SG to partner FT up front then we need to look at bringing someone in, maybe Sneijder or Van der Vart, for that second midfield place. Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum will need to give back some of the money they have taken out of the transfer kitty.
ReplyDeleteJaimie, top article! Agree with you 100% here. Also, Riera, I think will bring the necessary width which we were lacking last night because our fullbacks weren't bombing forward like they usually do. Villa's wingers were keeping them prety occupied.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, we conceded all our goals through set-pieces. Maybe we need to work on that.
Yes, not the yanks fault that Rafa plays players out of their position. I don't know why he's doing it. It clearly doesn't suite all of them (Lucas was supposed to be a box to box player who is utilised as a defensive midfielder, a position he lacks the attributes for; Babel thinks he is a striker, not a winger and you can see the result in his general effort and lack of motivation). As a result of that players don't play to their strengths and the fans get on their back. It is a bad situation, but given our current personell and playing all of them in their position we have one left-winger, no right-winger and one defensive midfielder. Should Rafa for one reason or another be not at Anfield anymore in say a year from now there would be a lot of money necessary to re-build the squad once again.
ReplyDeleteok, i watched the game last night, and, as a united supporter, i have to say, i loved it. made me feel a whole lot better about the burnley result. we were a shambles then, and you lot were last night. Jamie, you have made some astute points.
ReplyDeleteAquilani was a gamble, which could come good, but maybe too late. Alonso was a gem of a player for Liverpool. Someone above said his ability was overstated, that all he did was play the ball simple. but the fact is....that was his major assest. the intelligence and with to klnow when and how to use the ball. Rafa really ballsed up. not this summer, but last, when he was tryin to flog hiom to anyone so he could get his hands on gareth barry. alsonso is/was a far superior player to barry. then buyin keane, or rather his treatment of keane when he had bought him, was ridiculous.
it all stems, from an outsiders perspective anyway, from Rafa's sheer arrogance and apparent belief in his own infallibility. he was ragin at the fourth official last night for the extra time added on when villa scored their second.....extra seconds added on by pepe reina's petulent kick of the ball (am actually ragin, he's my fantasy team keeper). rafa, as shown also by his rant bout fergie, who, by the way, would most likely if not definitely raged at the fourth official also, seems to have a bit of a god complex, dunno if any of you liverpool reds would agree, would be interesting to know.
the sad fact of the matter is you have a good to very good first team, when everyone is fit. but your squad is woeful. your bench is just, as someone astutely pointed out previously, padded out. your club, and any honest fan should surely agree, has ONE striker. aworld class striker, yes, but just the one. voronin = useless. babel = useless. ngog - not even gonna bother describing him.
the thing is....where'd your youth policy go? this is the club that brought through the likes of fowler, mcmanaman, owen carragher (who flatters to deceive so much these days) and gerrard.
the thing united do well, is a squad. our squad players, although yes, quite a few are out of towners, likes of da silva twins n macheda, nani n anderson (who is being criminally under used and played out of position), but we've also got the likes of welbeck, gibson, fletcher, evans, brown and o'shea and countless others who can come in and do a job for us and be trusted.
rafa has tried to buy these squad players rather than nurture a youth setup, and, having not a great deal of money, has had to settle for rubbish like voronin dossena and ngog.
i dont think uz will win the league this year. not 100% convinced united will either, would like another decent signing before the window shuts. think you could do with the same. doubt either of us will see it tho.
I wonder if you feel that the botched attempt to sign Barry last year has caused this problem. Benitez ought to have known Xabi was going and arranged for a suitable replacement.
ReplyDeleteRe-formation. Can anyone suggest reasons why Bablel is not playing up front? He scores quite often when he does.
Jaimie, don't take this the wrong way, whilst i agree with your arguments regarding the formation, i have noticed you are always critical of Rafa Benitez. The title is 'Rafa Benitez's tactical blunders are hurting Liverpool'.
ReplyDeleteI agree that some fans never look to question Benitez's tactics/purchases, you seem to not be impartial but rather negative when it comes to Benitez.
Of course we are all unhappy with the way in which we have started this season, but some of the senior players have not stepped up so far. Benitez is respected throughout europe for his tactical know-how and your title is IMO harsh. The rest of the article makes a valid point. I just wanted to make a civilised comment!
In case you didn't notice Agger is injured. There is only one reason for our malaise - BENITEZ. Anyone remember 2001/02 when everyone was praising Houllier? Where did we finish the following season - 5th. Last season was another false dawn. While Johnson is better going forward he worse in defence. £18m for a full back to provide width - how about buying a PROPER winger and leave the full backs to defend!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBenitez has wasted so much money he puts Houllier to shame:
Dossena £7m, Lucas £6m, Babel £11m, Morientes £6m, and tbc Aquilani £20m most expensive crock in history? How many youngsters has he bought? How many of them have come through? He doesn't give the youngsters the chance to learn. Why give that donkey Babel another chance on Monday? He should have brought off Lucas and given Spearing a chance.
Benitez is the problem.
I agree with benitez having money and not spending it well but dont forget rick parry was behind this aswell
ReplyDeleteHowdo. I got barred off another LFC website simply for rationally explaining why Benitez will never win the Premiership for the great club Liverpool is. After a fair amount of infantile abuse and the threat of finding out where I am via my ISP, mind.
ReplyDeleteThe author of the original article is right but should logically take the next step from his own analysis to see why Benitez won't bring you the title.
I agree too that your owners are useless yet more important is the knowledge that any owner of their ilk, at any club, constitutes a long-term threat not just to clubs, but English football itself.
Things need to be done to curtail the "freedom" of overnight pelf arriving anywhere - from anyone.
Yet in LFC's case it is no longer valid to take the default mode of blaming them for the patent flaws Benitez has; with respect to winning the Premiership anyway.
I suspect the "In Rafa we trust" banners etc only emanated from the stark need to take sides, rather than any confirmation of the stature in which he believes he was/is held.
The real point is this: he has manipulated himself into a powerful position, having been given almost all of the concessions he sought. Prior to this he had his lack of overall control as a fallback and way of fostering a sense of overachievement, due only to his managerial skills. He can't use that now.
Cheers.
I don't take it the wrong way - you're entitled to your view. Yes, I'm critical of benitez but there is every reason to be. Players and managers lap up the praise when they do well; they have to be prepared to accept the criticism too. I don't believe Benitez is the man to bring the title back to Anfield. I don't just make unfounded assertions - I always back up what I say with detailed examples. It is not negativity, it is realism.
ReplyDeleteha jamie, this is slightly off the point but still on the point, we have a few good players and the reasons we have a lot of problems is due to our manager, so i want to know who if we finally decide to fire benitez you think would try and bring in as our new manager who could finally put us in a position to win the title, but also would be interested in the job. If you think it would be suitable i would like to hear your opinions on this in an article as i have given it some thought and find it difficult to think of a manager who could really do a good job and finally win us the title. I am tempted to look at darren ferguson just because he may be the only man who can compete with his father as he has done a very good job with peterborough. Just looking for you opinion as this may be the way forward with our spending, team and formation problems

Hi Kopfan - The only man for the job is, in my view, Martin O'Neill. I've been arguing this point for the last 6 years. Even before Rafa was appointed, I wanted O'Neill. He would definitely bring us the title I feel. I'll expand upon this another time.
ReplyDeleteha jamie, for a long time i would have agreed with you i thought O' Neill was the only man for the job and that he would do the job for us but recently i have began to fear he lacks the final bit of grit to get us over the finish line. At aston villa i think he has done a good job bringing villa from a bad/average team to a top 7 finishing team but has he bought as well as he could have. I do like the fact he has brought through a lot of youth which liverpool can't do with benitez at the helm as he doesn't give them a real chance. but can he work with the bigger players like gerrard and torres who unlike some of the others he has worked for may be hard headed in comparison. as a manager i have great respect for him but he can't just bring some of his former players to liverpool as he has done in the past as is petrov going to be an addition to our team? not really, the player i really like from his signings is carew who brings so much to a team but other than this i don't know if he can do the job. must say though that i would have had the same opinion of O'Neill as you have only a short time ago
ReplyDeleteYOU FUCKING SCOUSE BASTARDS I HATE YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, you really seem to be highly educated.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me, but I already know that Agger is injured. Maybe I should have put it more precisely like "when fit Agger should start instead of Carra". I had hoped that people would understand the point I tried to make anyway.
ReplyDeleteGood points. You may even get abused on here if you voice other than the main-stream opinions, though.
ReplyDeletehi jamie both the formations you have thought of seem alright. i thought of another formation. the plain old 4-4-2 like this
ReplyDeletebabel/kuyt torres
Riera/benayoun Kuyt/Lucas
Gerrard Masch
Insua carra skrtel johnson
reina
this way gerrard controls midfield. he can be given freedom to roam arnd midfield and take up attacking, defensive or playmaking (either deep lying or in the attacking third) positions. babel gets to play up front like he has always wanted. lucas can use his clever movement in the attacking third (might seem unorthodox using lucas on the right but i think it suits his abilities. its not like kuyt is your lightning quick winger with step overs and tricks. and lucas is good in the attacking third. to site instances - first goal in the game against stoke was created by lucas drifting into the attacking third. the goal in the pre season match against athletico madrid was scored by lucas playin in an advanced position and gerrard playin deeper in midfield). He can also drop back and defend thanks to his experience in midfield. yes we will be breaking up the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and the gerrard torres partnership but i don see much choice given teams are just man marking gerrard out of the game (nigel reo coker in game against villa and palacios against tottenham). i hope benitez can think of this. i think the system i have proposed is quite water tight. please do let me know wat u guys think of it
jamie i think it would criminal to sack benitez now. he has put in place a system right from academy to first team level. bringing in a new manager would be counter productive. anyway if benitez were to go i would i dont think MON is the right man for the job. my first choice would be king kenny. knows liverpool inside out. clever, passionate and a record of past success. steve bruce or harry redknapp would be my next preferred candidates.
ReplyDeleteI bet Spearing would get away with being worse than Lucas in the eyes of many Liverpool supporters simply because he is a local lad. Anyway, he didn't look out of place when he was given a run-out. I am not sure about Pacheco. He's got talent, for sure, but, and that is my impression, tries to do the impossible even more than Torres and very often lacks the vision for the better placed team-mate.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Jaimie asked for Rafa to be sacked.
ReplyDeletedont worry about it..."this is our year....(again)!" afterall...arf ;)
ReplyDeleteYou people make me laugh, all you do is slag off our players and our manager. Your not fit to call yourselves SUPPORTERS!!!. This site is so anti Liverpool its unbelivable. A bunch of champ manager players that think they could do a better job than Rafa. if you spent as much time getting behind your team as you do slagging them off, they might play with some confidence, insted their critisized every second of every game and it shows on the pitch. Out of all of the sites on the net regarding Liverpool FC this one is by far the most Negative Pesamistic of the lot, Well done
ReplyDeleteAnother one who thinks that you have to wear rose-tinted glasses to call yourself a supporter. Did you ever take into consideration that there may be a difference between blind faith and support? The latter may well include the option to have an opinion of your own.
ReplyDeletewe dont enjoy criticizing the team we support and love.
ReplyDeletelol. Martin O'neil.
