FOOTBALL CHEATS: No 3 - Ashley Cole (Arsenal v Manchester United - 2005)

Despite Mikael Silvestre being sent off and Roy Keane and Patrick Viera having to be pulled apart in the tunnel, the most imfamous moment of this ill-tempered game was undoubtedly Ashley Cole's blatant, cheating dive in the United penalty area.

The former Arsenal defender should hang his head in shame at this horrible piece of play-acting. As you can see from from the video, the United defender was nowhere near him.

Ashley Cole - is and always has been an outstanding ambassador for modern football.

NOT.

  12. Nice to see you boys being myopic as per usual when this sort of thing goes on. I'm not condoning Eduardo's 'dive' but it's not as if any team is above the law or criticism.

Jevon - fella you have sort term memory if you don't think Gerrard doesn't dive. If you're going to make a point about diving - you can't be selective. Well you can - but all that will happen is what is happening now - fans from all different clubs will let you have it - with both barrels. Stevie G not a diver - my arse!

Good luck with this argument by the way.

  13. Agreed - there is no room for personal bias when it comes to cheating in football. Fans have to be fair and demand that all players - even those from their own team - stop this behaviour.

  18. Gerrard DID NOT DIVE in the Champions League final.

Look at 7:10 in the video. Gattuso clearly clips the back of Gerrard's leg. People think Gerrard went down because Gattuso pulled his shirt, but thats not the case, its because he caught his leg at full speed.

How about Rooney? Remember the dive against Arsenal when Sol Campbell "fouled" him.

I can't defend Gerrard's other dives, but you guys had Ronaldo in your team.

  19. I am dreading the moment you'll put Torres up there... for a player of his class (easily one of the best striker in the world) he doesn't have to resort to this... I've seen Stevie dive, Alonso dive... Too many videos of good footballers diving has left a bad taste, just hope it doesn't make me too cynical.

  21. There are a lot of so-called dives that are arguably not cheating, but players just taking advantage of physical contact and going down a bit too easily. I only want to highlight the blatant, premeditated dives, those which are bad enough to warrant the label 'cheat'. I' not sure Torres has sone anything that bad yet.

  22. It looks like a dive but I agree it wasn't a cynical, premeditated dive. He went down when he had the chance but there was definitely contact.

You have to consider the context too; why would Gerrard dive there when he clear on goal. He was probably thinking about the glory of scoring the equaliser, not diving.

  23. That's alright then... playing up a contact/foul is certainly legal while it might not be so morally-correct (The Matarazzi incident comes to mind). But, one cannot practically expect all players to stay up when there's been a contact, so no point in us being morally-high and lose advantage... But, I just feel that Torres goes down too softly at times, but as you say he hasn't done anything so blatant as Stevie has done and I hope he doesn't in the future.

    OFF-TOPIC:
Is it just me or does anyone else feel that Torres doesn't look that sharp-ish this season? He drags an awful lot of defenders with him. it might be taking its toll on him. Perhaps playing him as a lone striker is not advisable for this reason among many others...
