Deal Close? Liverpool in talks to sign 'superb' £50m powerhouse; Gerrard and Carra want deal

As the season draws to a close, the Virgil Van Dijk rumours are ramping up yet again, and new reports suggest that Liverpool have taken the first step towards signing the 'superb' defender.

Over the last few months, Liverpool have been constantly linked with Van Dijk, and in January, Steven Gerrard joined ex-Reds Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, and Jan Molby in calling for his old club sign the £60m-rated defender.

Last week, the Daily Mail claimed that Jurgen Klopp is 'determined' to sign Van Dijk this summer, and according to The Mirror on Monday:

"The advisers of...£50m target Virgil van Dijk...spoke with Arsenal and Liverpool last week".

Man Utd, Man City, Tottenham, and Arsenal are also all in the race for Van Dijk, but according to ex-Southampton star David Prutton:

“Liverpool have a good dialogue with Southampton [which] gives them a head start".

Given the (fitness) unreliability of Matip and Lovren, it's clear that Liverpool need to sign at least one (or possibly two) top quality centre-halves this summer.

Van Dijk fits the bill for a number of reasons, the most important of which is that he's Premier League proven, and (in theory) won't require time to adapt.

Unfortunately, Liverpool cannot compete with the financial might of Chelsea, Man Utd, and City, so a deal seems unlikely. That said, he may feel that he'll get more playing time at Liverpool, which is probably the case, and that may be a deciding factor. Or, Van Dijk may just sign for the team that pays him the most.

Will Klopp break the club's transfer record to sign a defender, or will he be beaten to the punch by Chelsea?
