Anfield Update: Liverpool hero insists 'terrific' €36m Man Utd star could replace Jordan Henderson as captain of England

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has praised Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, and suggested that he could be a better option than Jordan Henderson as captain of the England national team.

The Reds face Man United tomorrow in a hotly anticipated Premier League clash, and ahead of the game, Thommo selected a combined Liverpool/Man United XI, and selected Smalling at centre-back. He explained:

"I can't believe Chris Smalling isn't starting with John Stones for England. People have been talking about the next England captain and he should not only be starting ahead of Cahill, but also considered for that role".

Jamie Carragher is also a fan of 'terrific' Smalling, and December 2015, he raved:

"He [Smalling] has become a leader at the back for Manchester United, and I think he’s actually been the best centre-back in the Premier League".

Smalling has come a long way over the last few years, and whenever I've watched him play, he looks like a decent defender, but is he a better option than Henderson for England captain?

Hendo has the edge has he also captains a Premier League team, but with Wayne Rooney seemingly on the outs at Man United, Smalling may get his chance in the near future.
