Anfield MegaDeal? Liverpool reps fly out to watch 'excellent' £40m attacker. Talks held with LFC in 2015

During Brendan Rodgers' reign, Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for 'excellent' Benfica attacker Eduardo Salvio, and new reports this week suggest that Salvio is back on the Reds' transfer radar.

According to the Daily Mail:

* 10+ clubs, including Liverpool, sent sent scouts to watch Tuesday's CL clash between Benfica and Besiktas.

* Salvio is one of four Benfica players being watched by Liverpool.

LFC Transfer Timeline:

* Feb 2014: A Bola claimed that Liverpool scouted Salvio.

* Mar 2015: O Jogo reported that that Benfica Salvio was one of Liverpool's top transfer targets.

* Apr 2015: The Telegraph claimed that Salvio's agent flew to Liverpool for transfer negotiations.

Some info about Salvio:

* Right-sided attacking midfielder, who can also play on the left, or as a number 10. Current contract expires in 2019, and contains a £40m buyout clause.

* Benfica: 38 goals/35 (73) assists in 167 apps for Benfica (Goal/assist every 155 mins). 5 apps for Argentina.

* 10 major trophies with Benfica/Atletico Madrid, including 3 league titles, and two Europa League wins.

* May 2016: When asked about his future, Salvio insisted: "My future is here, and I'm very happy here. My head is here and I want to win here for many years."

Liverpool may be interested, but under the FA's new rules, it will be a difficult for Salvio to get a work-permit. According to FA Chairman Greg Dyke, new FA rules stipulate that work permits will only be granted to non-EEA players if:

* The player is 'internationally established at the highest level'.

* Employment will make a 'significant contribution to the development of their sport at the highest level'.

Salvio hasn't played for Argentina since 2012, so he's sh^it outta luck. In any event, with two cruciate ligament injuries in the last two years (14 months on the sidelines), it's arguably a mistake to even consider signing Salvio until he's proven his fitness for at least 1-2 full seasons.
