Liverpool Smackdown: 73% of fans reject Klopp's plan to sign 'perfect' £12m attacker

Liverpool continue to be linked with a surprise January move for Southampton attacker Shane Long, but what do Liverpool fans think about the possibility of this particular transfer?

Liverpool reportedly remain interested in Long, with Southampton holding out for a £12m transfer fee.

Phil Thompson and Danny Murphy have registered their opposition to the signing, but other ex-Reds have taken a different view.

* Dietmar Hamann claims that Long is the 'perfect' signing for Liverpool, and will help the club 'grind out results'.

* Steve Nicol has further claimed that Liverpool fans will 'love' the Irish attacker because he 'gives everything' for the cause, but is he right?

Clearly not.

I conducted a poll this week asking fans if Liverpool should sign Long, and the results are emphatic:

* 73% of participating fans are totally against Liverpool's pursuit of Long.

In my view, anyone in favour of signing Shane Long has no interest in seeing Liverpool back amongst the elite. Long is a solid footballer, but he will not push Liverpool to the next level, and game-changing 'next-level' players should be the club's priority.

That doesn't always mean spending insane amounts of money; it means signing players that are better than the current crop, and demonstrably capable of improving the team. Top performing players signed for peanuts in the past include Courtois, Eriksen, Ayew, Payet, Kompany, Mahrez, Ivanovic, Cahill, Arteta, Vidic etc)

Average, huff-and-puff, creatively bereft grinders are (IMO) largely responsible for Liverpool's downward spiral into abject mid-table mediocrity, and following the same failed transfer template is stupidity of the highest order.
