Transfer Update: Klopp finally confirms that Liverpool transfer for 'exceptional' €15m attacker is not happening

Over the weekend, multiple reports claimed that Liverpool have reached an agreement with Sao Paulo to sign 'exceptional' Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato, but according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, Pato is not currently one of the club's transfer targets.

When asked today about Liverpool's alleged €15m deal for Pato, Klopp candidly told reporters:

"I could say that we don't talk about these things in public, but you don’t need to follow the Pato path anymore. That’s just some private advice from me".

This could be misdirection, but Klopp clearly intimates that a deal for Pato isn't happening, and given his prior reticence to openly discuss transfers, there's a strong chance it's a legitimate statement.

In my view, this is good news. Pato's injury record in Europe is poor, and there are serious doubts over whether his body can withstand the physicality of the Premier League (and and Klopp's intense pressing system).

If Pato is out of contention, then perhaps it means that Klopp has someone else in mind. Who, though? According to ex-Red Danny Murphy:

“A more realistic alternative [to Pierre Emerick Aubameyang] is Jese Rodriguez at Real Madrid, who has grown tired of a lack of game time. Jese is young, quick and well worth a gamble in January given his current discontent.”

A viable alternative?
