'He might leave': Prem Legend explains why BR 'might' quit LFC in 2016. Worrying?

As a proud Scot, I absolutely loved watching England's abject capitulation during the World Cup, and if Friday's turgid performance against Norway is anything to go by, things are not going to improve anytime soon. Roy Hodgson is an experienced manager, and a thoroughly decent guy, but he's clearly not the long-term solution. The England job is the proverbial poisoned chalice, but former England striker Kevin Davies believes that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is the ideal man to finally break the neverending cycle of mediocrity.

In an interview over the weekend, Davies insisted that Rodgers is 'perfect for England', and hailed Liverpool's 'exciting' style of football. He also suggested that the Reds boss might be open to a new challenge in the near future:

"The way he [Rodgers] man-manages the players is brilliant, and he always gets the best out of them. He probably wouldn't leave Liverpool at the moment but he might do when Roy's contract is up, at the end of Euro 2016"

Rodgers would undoubtedly do a better job than Hodgson, but England's problems are deeply ingrained, and there's no guarantee that he could turn things around.

At this point, changing the manager is just putting a band-aid on a gaping wound; England need a Germany-style overhaul, and that kind of all-encompassing, grass-roots transformation takes years to implement.

I can't see it happening, anyway. Rodgers has stated several times that he wants to stay at Liverpool 'for a long time' and build a lasting legacy, and he probably won't leave the club until he's realised his vision, or, at the very least, won several major trophies.

Additionally, Rodgers is aware of the amazing opportunity he has at Liverpool, and there's no guarantee that he'll get such a prestige job again in the future, especially if he fails with England.

That said, I sincerely hope Rodgers doesn't ever manage England. A young, progressive manager might actually turn things around, and get the team into the semi-finals (or even final) of a major tournament, and no one who enjoys good football wants to see that ;-)

  1. I want Rodgers to do a Fergie and stay for at least 25 years. I'm confident he will have a lot of success along the way.

  2. And just out of interest Jaimie, are you also a Scot by blood, or do you have some sub-continental ancestry as your last name seems to indicate?

  3. Henderson and Sturridge injured?

But Rodgers has way more chance to succeed in LFC than at England. I am sorry to all the Englishmen at the site but , your team just cant win stuff mates. Then just don't have an identity.

Rodgers is a soft touch that is why he will always be a failure

wenger and fergie scare managers like roy hodgson why do you think he took off wilshere and ox and kept our guys on wenger will give roy hell otherwise

unless brendan stops acting like a gentleman he wont win anything and mangers like roy will step all over him

forget that they take all our players and injure them
i dont expect sturridge or henderson to feature for a long time now

i said they were two of our three most important players and teh sad thing the other one is also in roys england team

    ReplyDelete
  10. Maybe Rodgers has a bit of respect and realises he needs to be a bit successful before he starts acting all high and mighty. If Rodgers were a soft touch, we wouldn't have gone that close to winning the league last year.

  11. Liverpool maybe need to give England their specialised training plan for Sturridge...

how hard is it to yell at roy hodgson the man is a joke and if not disciplined he will clown you around

  13. Spirit of the Shadows7:37 am, September 08, 2014

No point really they even managed to injure indestructible Jordan Henderson

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, shit, maybe he is yelling at Roy Hodgson? Does the media report every time Hodgson gets supposedly yelled at by Wenger?

    ReplyDelete
  15. That either comes down to bad luck, or because Henderson also has a personalised training plan that hasn't been used in the England squad.

    go public then
wenger has a number of times over walcott and wilshere
and he is still one of the most respected men in the game

    ReplyDelete
  17. Exactly, the respect that he has gives him that automatic authority to have a go at Hodgson. Rodgers doesn't yet have that authority. I think this is a very pointless and trivial matter anyway.

Real and Barca can change Spain's name and get away with it if they want. At the end of the day only money matters.

  21. I think you're the one looking like a clown.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe in 2036.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not sure if BR will leave that early (2016). If BR fails to qualify for CL this season and the next, Liverpool might just let him go but otherwise I don't see a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  24. He won't be leaving in 2016 unless his Liverpool career takes a very unexpected downward spiral. Hopefully he never manages England

    ReplyDelete
  25. How can he be an arrogant person without a successful CV? No one will respect him. Eg:- David Moyes at Man Utd.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Not sure if he will look good in one piece.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No training for Sturridge during international break.

    lol god one

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't see him managing England, no way. Rodgers enjoys coaching with young players and Liverpool with FSG is one of the few clubs in England that allows him to do that. He will never be able to do that at Chelsea or City. Arsenal are the only other team, and to be fair why would he leave Liverpool to go to Arsenal. I can see that Rodgers is a Northern Irishman who are generally more respected in the northern English teams like Liverpool or Man United. He will never go to United after managing Liverpool and being so much a part of the city and the culture.

The only place I can see him potentially go is to manage in Spain. If he is very successful at Liverpool, I can see him manage Barcelona or Real one day. Hopefully it never happens, because we do have the best British manager by a country mile.
Dare I say, that he is potentially the best British manager since Ferguson. When you think of the likes of George Graham, Glenn Hoddle, Kevin Keegan, Martin O'Neill, Alan Curbishley, John Gregory, Steve McClaren, David Moyes, Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Harry Redknapp....they were all flashes in the pan, and had no real end product. But Brendan Rodgers has the potential to be better than all of them.
Rodgers does have the potential to be very successful and possibly even knighted if he takes Liverpool to the League and Champions League glory.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Standard Jamie and throw in some anti English show yourself for who you are and pray your little piece of Britain is carved away and set adrift! Good luck when it all goes wrong wont turn down a bail out then will you from us.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Henderson is an iron man machine, it's some sort of England camp curse. I understand that the match coming up is a Euro qualifier, but the previous was just a friendly, and Rodgers should demand that his players are protected. The LFC players are guaranteed starters in the England squad and unless other players show some qualities, their places aren't under threat and don't need to prove themselves in pointless matches.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The long balls Bolton hoofed to Kevin Davies' head has effected his brain. Why the hell would Rodgers leave Liverpool for England.Club football is what makes the sport special. If International's where scrapped football would survive but if club football stopped you'd see other sports seriously challenge for being the most popular worldwide.
Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world.A global powerhouse that has millions of pationate fans invested in the club.
England is only bigger than Liverpool when they play International tournaments. That's once every 2 years for a month. They attract the casual fan but even the most patriotic would put their club side being successful over England.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Think Kevin has been at the liquor cabinet...
Not a chance. Rodgers is in for the long term. Even if at times the things he comes out with can make you cringe, he genuinely seems to be invested in the club and when it comes to matters of the clubs reputation, legacy etc he has always been honest about his desire to return us to the top and enhance it further. Why would he abandon that mid way when progress is clearly there to see.
Also I'm not sure how much it would interest him on a personal level, ie the "great honour" to manage England.

  36. I'd say Lallana out wide and Coutinho where you have Allen and that is a pretty decent team. Except for Sakho.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's because of the way he runs I'm told...

    ReplyDelete
  38. An Irishman in charge of the England football team ... that'd be special. There was also some recent talk of putting Eoin Morgan in as England cricket captain. I guess you have to do something to perk up these failing sporting institutions.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You hate England national team but support an English team. Hmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  40. When Kevin Davies is described as a 'prem legend' you know it's time to stop reading.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is not opinion you are speaking utter tripe i dont where you got these ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Every manager handles things in their own way there is no wrong or right just dignified or not.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everyone hates the English national team except the English but Liverpool are loved right across the world.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Liverpool aren't English, they're scouse

    ReplyDelete
  45. What...no mention of Steven Naismith's obvious dive against Germany? If he would have kept his feet he was through one-on-one with Neuer, but he went to the pitch instead on less a touch than Allen got vs Spurs. The ref was having none of it. Naismith should have been booked.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Didn't Rodgers say he would only quit Liverpoo for Irish national team?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jaimie,

I can guarantee that most Liverpool fans these days don't give a hoot about England
    Your schadenfreude is wasted.
The only thing I care about is that our players come back from there international games fit.
There really isn't much difference between England and Scotland football wise.
The only difference is that one seems to think they have players which are world class while the other knows they don't.
Rogers will stay as Liverpool as you say, he'll definitely go abroad probably to Spain at some point.
He speaks Spanish I'm told and has learnt Portuguese as well and a little Italian.
You don't do that unless you have some ambition to work abroad and who could blame him ?
If he won us the Premier league 6 times and a couple of CL in the next 8 years ...who would deny him the next opportunity abroad?
As long as we are restored to our perch as the most sucessful English team domestically and in Europe I'd be happy to let him go, a bonus would be the Mancs back in Championship they did it before and they can do it again .

    ReplyDelete
  48. Easy. Daniel 3 WEEKS and Henderson probably less.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just saw Mostarlfc clip for Markovic vs France. Haha, that boy is amazing, I'm telling you!! Pace, driblling, passing vision, STRENGHT AND STAMINA.. Gerrard Lallana coutinho, Sterling Lazar and Balotelli for Villa and we can score at least 4. By 65th minute..

    ReplyDelete
  50. "why do you think he took off wilshere and ox and kept our guys on"

Because they were crap and Sturridge, Sterling and to a lesser degree Henderson were pretty much the only good players out there on the day?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sakho bossed Diego Costa for France the other day. Bodes well.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Where did you read that?

The papers are reporting Jordan might play against Switzerland. He won't out for three days, let alone three months.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Moving from Liverpool to England, even right now when we're still a work in progress, would be a step down.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Rodgers had said during his tenure as Swansea manager that he would one day love to manage the Irish national team so I think the England job would not be to his liking. Just my opinion on quotes made by the man himself.

    ReplyDelete
  55. He is not Irish. He is a Brit from North Ireland.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I want Rodgers to stay and hope he is true to his word about rebuilding the lost greatness at Liverpool. I really don't give a crap about England's national team. Today, most teams have players from around the world and I always feel that winning your league is paramount and anything beyond that is icing on the cake!

    ReplyDelete
  57. would be funny to see hodgson fail with england after failing at lfc and then see BR succeed with both.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Charlton in charge of the Irish side Was a shocker, if you had a holiday in Ireland owned an Irish wolf hound or drank Irish whisky was enough to get you into the Irish team. But just to clear up one point B Rodgers is northern Irish which by birth makes him British, but I do see your point.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Jaimie, I have one question to ask you. In what sense of the word is Kevin Davies a Premier League "legend".

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ha! :-)

    That was funny!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Excellent point ! very average footballer IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good to know. I admire your adherence to your viewpoint but I would not class Davies as a legend per se but as an inspiration to aspiring footballers. To be a legend, you need to be know by everyone and very few casual fans know who Kevin Davies is.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Rodgers, ( that's Brenda,Buck or David Brent as some liked to portray him a while back )' WILL NOT LEAVE LIVERPOOL ' for another job in England .......... Guaranteed !!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I disagree with your classification of 'legend', but each to their own.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Irish are British. The British are collectively the inhabitants of Britain, a geographical entity which we could also call the east Atlantic archipelago, and which consists of thousands of islands. The largest of these islands, Great Britain ("great" as in "large"), is presently divided into three countries which together constitute three-quarters of the United Kingdom, a dynastic entity dating back to the Act of Union of 1707. Eire is the second largest of the British Isles and its inhabitants are Britons.

The Irish are indeed more British indeed than the English, who didn't arrive in Britain until they were invited (according to them) from their homeland on the other side of the North Sea to assist the tribes of Great Britain in a defensive war against invading forces of Norsemen in about 600AD.

True to form, the English decided to stay, took everything over, and chased off many of the Britons, who migrated in the opposite direction, settling in what is now the Brittany region of northern France. Meanwhile the English divided the southern part of the island into seven kingdoms, which were slowly brought into a unity which lasted until 1066 and the Norman invasion.

The Normans, funnily enough, were partly constituted of the descendants of those same Norsemen whom they had driven out from Great Britain over the preceding 400 years.

Interestingly, Brendan Rodgers' surname is a Norman patronymic, indicating that he is probably a descendant not of Celtic Britons, but of the Norse who were the traditional antagonists of the Britons. It would be just as proper to say that Brendan is Irish Norseman from West Britain as anything else. The ethnography of the British Isles is so complicated that trying to distinguish genealogies and map them onto present-day political divisions is usually a complete waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't know why I wrote that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. In a piece from 'The Sack Race' Brendan Rodgers in turning down '' the Northern Ireland job'' is quoted as saying he would love to be given the oportunity to manage 'his country' someday, i note in the same piece ''The 58 year old was recently approached by the Irish Football Association to succeed Nigel Worthington'' who stepped down in October 2011. That would now make Rodgers 61 years old ......... don't believe all you read ;-) .... he's only 41 now !!

    ReplyDelete
  68. He's the most booked player in the history of the Premier League.

    Legendary.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Most booked player in the history of the Premier League.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Eoin Morgan captained England yesterday in the T20 victory over India.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Kevin Davies ranks 48th in the list of all time Prem appearances. All solid, dependable professionals too, no doubt. On that basis, you'd be calling a lot of players "legend" and in my opinion, that renders the term meaningless.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Well I enjoyed it. Every day's a school day

    ReplyDelete
  73. I can't see a proud Northern Irishman even considering giving up the best job in England to take the worst....and the England job is the worst... career ending!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Can you imagine England playing the football LFC do?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Difference between Rodgers and Wrinkly, sorry Wenger, is class..... Wenger has none.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Don't apologise, I'm english, and find it excruciating to watch england play..... while hodgson is manager england have no chance what so ever.... I would have picked Redknapp over Hodgson all day long, but he probably wouldn't have done what he's told.... Hodgson is nowt more than a willing face for the FA to command.

    ReplyDelete
  77. What idiot can honestly think BR would leave LFC for England after all the work he has put in regarding long term planning ! Dream on

    ReplyDelete
  78. he took Wiltshire of because yet again he was fourth rate

    ReplyDelete
  79. Wilshere is exactly the same player as he was when he first broke through, hasn't developed a bit and if anything he's gone backwards.
2 years ago if you'd asked me who was better, hendo or wilshere, I'd have said wilshere but not now. Hendo's getting better every week

    ReplyDelete
  80. Kevin Davies has been a steady, solid performer for a number of clubs in England but I don't think he would even be regarded as a legend by any particular set of fans. He's a decent player by all accounts but surely the word legend signifies that you've done something memorable that people will be talking about for years, hence your legend lives on. I can't think of too many things Kevin Davies has done that'll be talked about for years to come.
If Kevin Davies qualifies as a premier league legend then so does Steve Sidwell, Tom Huddlestone, Brede Hangelaand and other players of such ilk. Decent players yes but legends? Hardly

    ReplyDelete
  81. Lmao! What a joke...I remember England going after Fergie a number of times, it ain't gonna happen lads! He's Irish FFS...not only that he's managing Liverpool..! Why leave to play teams like Andorra year in year out, I hate the media sometimes just writing what they hope to come true! YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  82. Even if LFC have a bad season this year (which I don't think they will) I would be devastated if Brendan left...

    ReplyDelete
  83. He is an Irishman from the six counties, according to himself that is.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ridiculous, the Irish are Celtic, the Brits are a mix of Anglican and French.

    ReplyDelete
  85. He also speaks Gaelic, (Irish).

    ReplyDelete
  86. Unfair Sid, we all forget to press the space bar sometimes,
    "Leg End"

    ReplyDelete
  87. Indeed, they are mostly French. Normans, I suppose. An entire nation of people called "Norman". Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think it's important to occasionally just say whatever comes into your mind. So long as sound like you know what you're saying, you get away with it. I do it all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  89. It's not the Great Britain football team is it? It's England. And Northern Ireland is still Ireland. I'm not putting staunch republican political affiliations on the man, I'm just saying he was born in Ireland, which he was. He's certainly not English.

Reminds me of how the term "Britain" tends to get used so much more often when Andy Murray is doing well in the tennis. Wimbledon's first "British" champion in blah blah number of years. All the time forgetting that it's the All ENGLAND Lawn Tennis Champions. He's a bloody Scot.

    ReplyDelete
  90. This is what I don't get about Poms. They're only British when it suits them.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I said something which pretty well summed up what he's been saying, but unfortunately JK deleted it. It wasn't even that bad...

    ReplyDelete
  92. The biggest question I've always had around British DNA comes in the form of people like Sean Connery. Full blooded Brit, but he looks like he's from Sicily. I'm not sure if indigenous Britons were dark haired, or the Basque came to Ireland and spread to Great Britain, or what...
