Backstabbed: FSG set to dump Rodgers for Champions League-winning boss...?

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has endured a difficult first season at Anfield so far, and with the club currently 12 points adrift in the race for 4th place in the Premier League, the chances of making the Champions League places seem increasingly slim. Rodgers' Anfield project is, of course, a long-term endeavour, but for the first time, it seems like his job may actually be under threat.

According to a report in French newspaper Le Parisien, FSG secretly sounded-out another manager to replace Rodgers next summer. The report states:

"According to our information, Carlo Ancelotti was approached in November and December by three Premier League clubs including Manchester City and Liverpool"

If it's true that FSG secretly approached Ancelotti a mere five months into Rodgers' reign, then it's pretty disgraceful behaviour, and echoes the Jurgen Klinnsman-Rafa Benitez debacle under Hicks and Gillett.

If FSG did send a representative to talk with Ancelotti, it's highly likely it would've been Ian Ayre. Geographically, he's the closest member of the Anfield hierarchy, and I doubt Henry or Werner would fly all the way to France from the US for a speculative meeting.

Even if it wasn't Ayre, I can't see how he wouldn't know about something like that, which means - if the story is true - that Liverpool's MD has basically been lying to Rodgers' face for the last three months. When asked in a press conference over the weekend about rumours linking him with a move away in the summer, Ancelotti responded:

"We will see how things stand at the end of the season and, if the club is happy, and me too, we will continue. Otherwise, there’s no other choice. It’s one or the other. I’m very happy here, but if the club is not happy, I will have no problem changing."

Clearly, the Italian is willing to move on, and if Rodgers continues to preside over poor results, his position could become increasingly untenable.

Ancelotti has always had good things to say about Liverpool. Most recently, when asked by CNN World Sport who he believed are the world's best fans, he said:

"In my opinion Liverpool fans. When they sing a song your hair stands up"

Ancelotti certainly has many advantages over Rodgers:

* Massive experience in the game.
* A long, winning track record.
* Worldwide respect for his achievements in the game.
* Experience of managing the world's best players.
* Ability to attract top class players.
* Experience of winning the Premier League.
* The personal authority that comes with success.

Is the writing already on the wall for Rodgers...?

I think BR should stay for at least another season, but if we replace him Ancelotti is more than a worthy candidate.
I have my preferences to other managers ahead of him, but still - he is WAY ahead of most o the other managers that were linked with us last summer.

Just a thought - if BR stays another season, doing badly and getting the sack, isn't it around the same time Klopp finishes his Dortmund contract? :)

Sack Rogers and we'll be the next Chelsea whereby the best managers wont join in fear of being sacked 6 months down the line. Give rogers a chance. 2 more years minimum in my opinion. If we are not in Champions league then sack him.

Greg said...

I like the idea of a young manager taking over a young side i dont see that changing managers is going to make a lot of difference.
The top four is the clubs aim presently and i do not see the experience or talent there to get that far.
FSG would be better served to spend the money that they were possibly going to spend on Ancellotti on players.
The club needs stability and like it or lump Rodgers should get at least another season.

The game against West Brom destroyed a lot of my confidence in BR because tactically I thought he was great. In general the LFC job has highlighted some weaknesses in BR's game.

I'm happy to keep Rodgers as long as there is forward progress. That can only be judged at the end of each season.

One thing is for sure you need to build on things. KD didn't get the chance to build anything - But under Rodgers you can kind of feel a 'project' happening, with the objective being future success and the foundations being laid down now.

However let's say we finish 10th (maybe lower). Regardless of this 'project' stuff, surely BR would have to go? That's what I'm worried about right now.

Saw his comments the other day and thought he is definitely on the move at the end of the season and now this story pops up about us approaching him. There could well be something in this. If so, I agree with Jamie that it is a disgraceful way for the owners to act but if you offered me Ancelotti as Manager, would I be happy? That would be a resounding yes from me. Very good manager with shed loads of experience at the top. Knows how to deal with big egos and big expectations. Was also very impressed at how fast he learned english when he moved to Chelsea, obviously a smart and dedicated guy.
I have been behind BR since day one but I would expect to see some consistency at this stage of the season. The defence is an absolute shambles and it is causng me to lose faith in him. The decisions on monday night were just baffling. We need to go on a run over the next few weeks to make me start believing that he is the right man for the job. Otherwise, I will open my arms and say welocome to Anfield Carlo.

George T. said...

BR's project is clearly a long-term one and he is learning as he goes along. Whether Liverpool is the right club for a manager to be learning his trade and experimenting and making blatant rookie mistakes is a different story. I do like a lot of what he has done and I can see how he is trying to improve the team's style of play and squad, but he probably should have stayed at Swansea, gained some more top flight experience, some European experience and actually won something before making the step up.

Obviously, he was offered the role and wasn't going to turn it down. FSG will have to carry the can on that one. Nearly everyone in a high level of authority at the club has little or no experience in their designated role's, so bringing in a rookie manager on top of that was just plain ridiculous. The whole structure at the top is in disarray and FSG seriously need to consider bringing in experienced faces. Ancelotti is obviously a far, far better manager than Rodgers, so if this did materialise it would be a massive step in the right direction, but the problems run deeper than that.

The fact that Henry hasn't even been in the country since the FA Cup final speaks volumes.

TC said...

Now that would be a turn up! Its usually the fans who start the chorus of 'sack the manager'.

Personally, I think Ancelotti would be a safer pair of hands than BR, and would probably take us further up the league. If it could be done without too much financial penalty, I'd swap them any day.
But remember even Ancelotti can't work miracles, and there are a good number of fairly average players at LFC.

But FSG won't make any decisions until the end of the season, surely?
And they must shoulder some of the blame- to some extent Ayres and FSG hamstrung BR to start with, by not getting Sturridge in last summer, as he wanted them to.
If they had, we'd probably be ten goals and several points better off by now.

Agaton said...

Do anyone still believe that FSG will make their decision based on what type of football we play?

I doubt that. They don't know the game good enough to make the decision based on that.

They will look at the results and decide based on that. Nothing else.

The season have been even worse than the previous one. It is our worst season since we last won the league. That is long time ago.

We don't even have a realistic chance to reach a top four place. we got dump out of the FA cup by a mediocre Oldham.

Rodgers or Ancelotti? Ancelotti all the way.

Eric said...

I doubt it. Although I have to admit I entertained the thought when I read this morning that Mourinho wants his next job to be in England.

Nicholas Blackley said...

I'd really like Ancelotti, but I'd feel really sorry for Rodgers if he was booted. His heart is absolutely set on this project, which I can eventually see coming to fruition, and it would just be painfully ruthless for Rodgers if he were backstabbed.

Maybe FSG have been nudging CA on the shoulder just incase Rodgers doesn't work out. Never the less, football is now a business whether fans like it or not, and unfortunately what comes with business is impatience for results, otherwise you're out, because the rest of the field just keeps getting further and further ahead (look at spurs for example).

Here's one thing for those Suarez loyalists however; I believe if Liverpool don't make the top four, but acquire Ancelotti's services, Suarez will stay. I will hold absolutely no grudge agains't Suarez if he leaves, a player of his quality deserves to be competing in the champions league and for domestic titles, not languishing on the edge of Europa league qualification and waddling in mid-table obscurity. He's 25, and needs to start competing at a higher level for trophies now.

Jason Carr said...

rodgers has had time to implament is ideas now,and imo its not working i think he has the next 3 games to save his job, anything less than progress in the europa cup and to at least avoid defeat to swansea (and i,am being kind we should be winning)then he has to go ,and people who are asking for him to be given another 2 years are living in dreamland,if he survives till the beginning of next season and results are not going his way then he will be sacked(giving fsg the ideal chance not to invest big in the summer like some fans think they are going to)

Jason Carr said...

well put george,re henry ,i think he knows he mite not like what he hears on his next visit

Agree with you regarding Suarez. Just so long as he doesn't spend the summer saying he wants to stay only to hand in a transfer request on August 31st. He should command no less than £50m either.

Karthiku Ak said...

Rodgers must be given one more chance his tiki-taka technique is good he is fully changing techniques what kd did last year he just needs time and should stay for one more year we just need  a poacher who could finish a number of chances that Liverpool are creating and not scoring them

It's CRAZY to sack Rodgers,he has a clear vision to what he wants the club to be like, the story is complete garbage, we don't wanna scare managers away like Chelsea, so lets keep to Rodgers, he need to make his own stamp on the team,

What you need to do "mate" is proof read what you are posting and get your head out of your **** and get in the real world........ Rodgers has had no time what so ever and we play far better football now than we did under Rafa Woy And Kenny, but none as blind as those that won't see. We are rebuilding and it will take more than the 10 minutes you are giving BR, for gods sake get a grip and try supporting him.

Do you really think Ancelotti will leave the bottomless pit of money that is PSG to work under frugal American employers?

Nicholas Blackley said...

If steve Clarke didn't leave, I reckon we'd be close to or in 4th spot at the moment. He really made our defence in order last season, and so he did with Chelsea in the Mourinho days. Rodgers obviously has much more of a penchant for attack than defence.

Jason Carr said...

did you call for roy and kenny to be given time or do you just fancy rodgers, his record is worse than both and he was the wrong choice in the 1st place imo, your welcome to your view but please do not try to change mine, the only person who can do that is rodgers and upto now he has done nothing to convince me i was wrong(ive said before i do not blame rodgers for taking the job but it was to much to soon for him)i blame fsg for hiring such a novice in the 1st place he did not have the experience and i for one am not willing to wait for years to see if he can ever prove himself to be a success

Greg | Liverpool Kopites said...

Whether you support BR or not, the problem is that he does himself no favours by constantly blagging about his ideas, systems, coaching record etc and then still comes up with naive tactical errors, an obvious inferiority complex when dealing with 'big' players, gross overpraise of underperforming players (Moyes never needed to resort to that anytime with Everton to get the players' respect and commitment and he was no big name mgr either when he took over them) etc. At the moment, it still looks like the job is too big for him. That said, like I mentioned earlier, he can be given next season but by end of the year if there's no concrete improvement, it would be difficult for fsg to keep him on, regardless of the modern nature of 'instant results' in football. Remember, the longer we stay out of the top four, the harder it will be to get back in it.

SirBP said...

As usual you skirt around the questions and no answers. Hodgson was a big mistake and he should never have been anywhere near the home dressing room, I do not call for any manager to be sacked i SUPPORT them because i am a SUPPORTER of Lfc, the biggest mistake LFC have made was not backing Benitez but that was because of Waldof and Stadler and not FSG big big mistake and we will rue it for years!

arthurblundell said...

FSG are not going to invest in any more $ in a rebuilding project without a new foreman with a realistic set of plans, granted he's upped the passing game but that should be normal through training, imo the tick tacky disco cr&p was his undoing.

Banoog said...

Does this mean that FSG are ditching their 'experiment' for a more sensible and pragmatic road to success? FSG have made way too many mistakes. This is not about instant success, but every major decision should be viewed as an opportunity to head us in the right direction. FSG must feel sick to their stomachs to see what Steve Clarke is doing at that 'mid-table' team WBA

It's not all over for BR. not yet, and you never know, results may improve. But sorry, the words 'Rodgers' and 'progress' should not be used in the same sentence, not unless 'lack of' is thrown in there somewhere. There is absolutely no evidence for it!

Anybody who knows anything about Liverpool know BR's sacking is not on the agenda!

Champions League this year was a pipe dream and never a reality! You've all got ahead of yourselves.

People saying "sack him", "one more chance" and the abhorrent shout to "reinstate Benitez"  need to wake up to our reality!

We lost Kuyt, Maxi, Bellamy Released or transferred  Aurelio, Cole, Aquillani, Carroll, Spearing. And have only bought 5 players??
Borini, Allen, Courtinho, Assaidi and Sturridge! Average age 22.

4 of the players have barely played with 2 of them only just arriving.

This is a massive project and no manager is going to come into our club with FSG's moneyball approach and do any better than BR.

Ancolloti? AC Milan, Chelsea and PSG all clubs with vast wealth in their respected countries.

Think we all need to wake up to our reality?

We have a plan (at last the first time in 20 years) and we need to and are going to stick to it!

We have never really been and will never be a sacking club. Now all of a sudden you want us to be??

We require understanding and patience. that's the real Liverpool way. some of you would do well to remember that. We are not Chelski or Spurs.

Remember Benfica sacked Mourinho (asked him to resign) in his formative years. What a massive mistake.

We are after the next Jurgan Kloop, Jose Mourinho at Benfica. managers that inherited poor squads and built their teams up over time.

5 1/2 months is not time.

Personally I like what BR is doing and think this is the way to put us back at the very top of the league.

Our club need to be innovators and leaders again. Fundamentally our club is floored an for too long weve bought players for vast amounts of money who quite simply were not up to the task of making us PL champions.

Rafa had 6 years to make us Champions and failed and if Houllier never got us to the Champion League the same people shouting now wuld have been calling for his head!

PATIENCE PEOPLE

So we are playing prettier football in your eyes now than under Rafa? o you would take this over winning trophies like the CL? get a fucking grip BR has bought average players for big money and we are worse off than last season or any other season in the past 10 years so for me he has had enough time and is bringing us backwards so giving him more time will just make the whole situation worse

Sacking Rodgers will not solve our problems. We will have to go through a new transition, style and system with an incoming new manager.
The problem is we do not have the technical players to carry out his vision and system.
The same players who let down KK is at it again. Get rid for gods sakes.

Well said. I don't see how people can be acknowledging at the start of the season that we will have a difficult time and we will need to be patient and then - before the season is over - calling for change. I wasn't pleased with the Rodgers appointment; but we made the choice; now stand by it.

Bull story once again....  BR has us playing some of the best football i have ever watched as a reds supporter.. Fair enough he does lack experience and is human who will sometimes fail making decisions.. People  here are asking for Benitez too be reinstated...???In the last 6 months Raffa was manager the football we were playing became an eye sore..and lookn at how Chelsea are playing with argubly the best squad in the league does not do Raffa any favours.. It's a transitional period and one which BR did not create....Granted Anchollti is a good manager but has always managed big clubs with money too burn.... Ac Milan,Chelsea and now PSG all had and have strong squads who could field two teams!!!!!

why will we have to go trough a new transition thats the problem rodgers and some fans think hes invented a new concept when it comes to football well he as not its simple really pass and move lfc have been doing it for over a hundred years, and and for the past 40 odd years with a lot better results than we have seen this season

brendan rodgers should sell borini to raise funds or loan him to a club like celtic which is a easier league to play in, which will give him confidence, shooting sharpness and sharpness. they will also offer him champions league football which will give him an oppurtunity to justify his loan against CL quality teams. although selling him would be a much better option.

i also have no doubt michael ngoo will benefit highly from his loan in scotland and already is showing signs he can be a real ibrahimovic type player. hes scored 3 spectacluar goals showing personal attributes in each. type in michael ngoo on youtube, hes had a very good start and could have had a hattrick one match. its very possible he can get 10 goals come the end of the season and that would be a very succesful loan. he should be given a good chance in pre-season if he impresses rodgers should make a decision whether or not hes gonna sit on the bench all day or if hes really going to put him in his plans. if hes to sit on the bench, rodgers should loan him to celtic to contnue his development and offer him CL football, allow him to shine on the big stage. he should then come back for 2014-15 season age 22, really fighting for a place in what should be by that time a relly competitive squad. this is no ordinary 6ft6 striker

Hiring BR this season was too soon. KD should have remained in charge for one more season before someone as inexperienced as BR was signed. It's a nice sentiment, having a young manager find his way at such a prolific club, but the entire notion was premature, and we may have to pay for such a decision. KD was brought in to stabilize and reinvigorate. He got the club much needed silverware and a return to Europe. BR has undone all that in 6 months for the sake of tika taka football. Liverpool won't win any trophies, nor will they qualify for Europe. That in my opinion is a step back after KD's 2 steps forward.

BR has had a difficult season, but KD faced the real adversity with woodwork luck, racism bans and a lengthy injury to his team captain on top of a demoralized and very fresh squad. Yet he got to 2 cup finals, winning 1, perhaps because having consistency in the league was too much to ask so soon. Which is experienced managing. The squad was too fresh for a push for Europe in the league, and it was made impossible with Suarez, Gerrard and Lucas' absence. BR has neglected the cups, made equally bad transfers and has done even worse than KD in the league despite all of KD's transfers having settled into the team.

In order to keep Suarez and lure in the likes Liverpool may have to show some ambition if Rodgers isn't, in signing a manager that can bring success before the club has to start over again without Gerrard and Suarez. It's not really about building up the reputation of a manager. That takes years and years, which Liverpool does not have if they want to maintain any sort of momentum in progress. That's for a mid-table club who don't expect to hold on to world class players such as Suarez. If KD got the sack for league form and transfer failings, well then our worst campaign since Souness and the likes of Borini, Allen, Sahin and Assaidi are what exactly?

Three very embarrassing things Liverpool fans are enduring this season are: 1. KD's assistant coach has done the double over Liverpool with his new team, scoring 5 and conceding none and sits above Liverpool on the log. And Clarke had never managed before, and has a weaker squad than BR has, so let us rule out those excuses. 2. BR's former team led by Laudrup are above Liverpool on the log, have beaten them in the league and the League Cup to reach the final, with a new manager to the club and the EPL, and with a weaker squad, again. 3. BR has not yet beaten a team in the top 10. When has that ever happened to Liverpool?

It's mortifying being a fan right now, and it's all because of ill-advised sentiment and the sake of trying to be Barcelona before the club had a team anywhere near to Barca's level. KD saw the worth in building a team and keeping the players motivated with trophies before they could turn on the Barca's style. BR has gone straight for Barca's football without the players, and has demotivated and destabilized the club in the process. I didn't want to see tiki taka so soon if it meant Liverpool were going to lose at home 4 times, to the likes of West Brom, etc. I would have accepted anal and boring football just so there was a team ready to adopt Barca's style of play when the club was ready.

I don't blame BR" or the horribly naive owners. I blame Ian Ayre and his overriding decision on all of Comolli and Dalglish and Rodgers' transfers, the sacking and hiring of Benitez, Hodgson, Dalglish and Rodgers. The one common denominator in all of the club's failings over the passed 2 and a half seasons is Ian Ayre. He should go, or step down from footballing decisions and focus entirely on sponsors and marketing, the only department the club is succeeding in surprisingly. For Liverpool fans there is the choice to remain patient with BR and accept that expectations have dropped significantly since KD's dismissal, or to demand the club returns to it's trajected progress with the appointment of a football manager, and not a football amateur.

Buy young and talented players! i can name over 50 names of young and talented players but definitely they not playing for LFC! So we better to make our mind up and not to expect much till we find new owners or they change their transfer policy! We need experienced players in this team too and we don't have many ! rodgers should really look into buying GK-Julio Cesar (£6m if QPR relegated) DM-mohamed diame (£3.5m) CB-mateo mussachio (£6m) CB-brede hangeland (free) AM-keisuke honda (£10m) LWB-Luis Ibanez (£4m) LW-marcos rojas (free) RW-ben arfa (£9m) or tom ince (£8m 35% off = £5.2m) both similar players but with many young players in the squad the more experience ben arfa would be the better option for the right blend. with sturridge, suarez, gerrard, coutinho, downing, agger, kelly, wisdom, enrique should have a real competitive squad. we should sell ST-andy carroll (£12m), ST-fabio borini (£7m) CM-jay spearing (£1m) CB-sebstien coates (£6m) GK-pepe reina (£8m) carragher (retired). AM-suso and RW-sterling could choose to stay and fight for their place but should things go well with these signings they will be restricted to alot of bench time, but this does not mean there not in the managers plans. they should both go on loan to teams like wigan so they can develop more and show what their really about. so all together transfers in would be £38.5m.
transfers out would be £34million

all position out have been replaced and this would represent a month of good business

By which point Gerrard will be over the hill and Suarez would be off playing for an ambitious club, with Pepe unlikely to remain either, and Carragher already gone, the core would be lost and so with it momentum. Sounds like Newcastle United's journey. We'll have Chris Houghton getting us promoted to the EPL again in 3 years rather. Do we take 2 steps back every other season, so that the one in between can boast a single step forward. What no one is seeing is that BR lacks the experience to help Liverpool at this point, and so instead the club is only helping him. He'll bounce back quickly with a mid table team to learn his trade at. Teams that don't have players like Suarez to hold on to. Liverpool on the other hand will have to completely redevelop the squad, with the supposed lack of funds as they're once again being Yanked.

This issue is the elephant in the room for FSG - how they ignored Rafa last summer just beggars belief. I could write pages on this subject but Rafa is Liverpool through and through and will undoubtedly get us punching above our weight again if appointed. BR may become an outstanding coach in the future (and to be clear I do like the guy a lot - he is very endearing and on the occasions his teams hit form, they are impressive) but he cannot hold a candle to Rafa at present.

If FSG (and I have it on good authority that their representatives pour over these very boards obsessively) are serious about returning LFC to the top of English and European football, Benitez is the safest and sanest option for the club to take - from an individual holding a season ticket for many, many, many years

Finally someone with a bit of sense. Yes WBA result was a disappointment but how many here were slagging the manager after the performances against City & Arsenal. We created enough chances to win two games the other night and if anyone was to blame it is the players.
The main problem at this point is consistency - in fact that has been a problem for years.
Ancelotti won't be coming because he doesn't fit the FSG profile. And for those who say FSG don't put up money how come we were one of the biggest spenders in January.
We need to give Rogers time and not panic every time there's a poor result.

Having said that, FSG's patience will run out, and there is only so long Rodgers can 'get away' with how we have performed in some games.
1 more season, and if we are still in the same situation, then maube changes should be thought about.

I for one did not like KK sacked. he should have been given time. one more season should have sufficed.
Now sacking Buck is just going to take us back.
The players selection was wrong for the game. But we need players with the right mentality, attitude and technique to play for Liverpool.
The current squad is not there.

Greg | Liverpool Kopites said...

fsg have already made it clear they're going the 'young talent' / arsenal way. henry n co only came out later to say something different in order to appease supporters. not hating, just saying. so anyone who's expecting a big name/megabucks signing in the summer has to wake up now or risk disappointment. of course, there's always the possibility of signing a real unknown star on the cheap like we did with Hyypia but our scouting in recent years has nothing left to be desired.

Greg | Liverpool Kopites said...

If we do not have the technical players to carry out his 'vision and system' then as a proper coach with the brief to get results for the club, you should change the system to play to the players' strengths, get the results, get into the big money league, get the money to spend to buy the players you need to fit into your system and then change from there. That's a proper transition. You don't try to force things into your system, not get results and then blame the players you have for not being able to fit into your system. That's where BR has shown his lack of experience.
Even Tony Pulis would be able to get us better results with this group of players.

Greg | Liverpool Kopites said...

There's also no innovation in what BR is trying to do. He's just trying to be the british guardiola but Martinez got there before him, except that he's still Spanish. Also I don't see how we are playing much more attractive football now than before - still think we were more exciting last year. Then again, this is also an opinion lol

heres a few answers for you and the its getting better under rodgers brigade
1,out of 13 home league games we have lost 4 only won 6
2 we have not been in the top six all season
3 not managed more than 2 wins on the bounce in the league all season
now lets get on to rodgers summer signing allen, borini and assaidi
1 goals scored between them i have had to use all comps for this as they have not managed a league goal between them they have scored two goals
skrtel and agger have two league goals each
2 assists again all compdue to the fact they have not made one in the league, they have managed two yet again
enrique as 3 in the league
so please do not try and tell me we are improving or moving forward under rodgers because i do not believe it not on the pitch or with his personal (i left sturridge and coutinho out because they have only just come)

I've been asking for several weeks now, for someone to explain what they mean by we are making progress. May be you can help.

Will said...

Well I mean progress in terms of the way that we play. Its a lot better football (when it works) and when it does work, we are almost unplayable.
Obviously some people dont see it as progress, due to the league position etc... and thats fine. But I think they are making progress.

Jason Carr said...

don,t mention our scouts i bet they haven,t earned a badge between them;-)

Jason Carr said...

me to if the goals had gone in last season we would have played much better than we have this

Brian said...

Ive always doubted BR's ability to bring some kinda success too LFC but was hoping he could prove me wrong. in my opinion hes to inexperience for a club like livepool... the only way to move forward is change. Starting with BR

Banoog said...

Thanks for the reply. I've been hearing the word 'progress' bandied around for months but no-one has been willing to qualify their use of the word.

Unfortunately we are turning into Arsenal of recent years. The real issue, as you've alluded to, is whether FSG can see BR taking us forward. Frankly, I can't. Even if we had a team of superstar footballers, I think BR would still struggle to put together a string of results.

Jason Carr said...

i can help you m8 its a myth a white elephant ,something thats not true but if enough people think and say it  others start to believe it as well

Hmautomitive_info said...

We are at present One step forward two steps back , that is deemed as progress by some

Hmautomitive_info said...

Newcastle under Keegan also played pretty football , yet never won anything, sadly it is results that count and our current position in the table doesn't lie

Theycallmemrburt said...

I'm behind BR till the wheels fall off.  I can see his vision unraveling.  We have the shoots of success, it will just take one summer of Key signings and next year will be a lot different.

Banoog said...

You're absolutely spot on with that. There is no objective evidence for progress, as far as I can tell. The football we've played this season has been easy on the eyes, at times. But this is no different to last under KD.

'If enough people think and say it others start to believe it as well'. This much is true, The other statements I keep hearing a lot are: 'we are a team in transition', 'we must go backwards before we can go forwards', 'Brendan Rodgers has a plan' etc. There is absolutely no truth/evidence for any of it. It seems, however, that because BR says there is a plan and we are improving, then it must be true.

Banoog said...

If Wigan, Sunderland or Swansea experienced a string of results such as ours, then that would be perceived as par for the course. If Man U or Man City had our recent track record, then the players and the managers would be deemed abject failures.

This highlights the fact that progress or failure is all about people's perceptions. This is not to disrespect the opinions of others, but it shows how low our expectations have sunk to think that we are actually progressing. The predicament of recent years has forced us to accept mediocrity.

In recent times when people were saying we were a mid-table side, I was saying nonsense, we're better than that, just going through a rough patch that's all. But now, I believe we truly are a mid-table side. We're not punching above our weight, but we're not failing to meet expectations either. We are exactly where we deserve to be.

Septimus_red said...

As long as Ian Ayre remains on the Board Rafa Benitez will not  be considered for the role of manager at Liverpool.

Will said...

I was very optimistic about his appointment, but I am starting to get a little frustrated.
The thing is, is we can sack him and bring someone else in, but then we will turn in to a Chelsea with no cohesion, just jumping around all the time.
I just dont think Rodgers should be judge to much on this season.
If he is still doing the same next season, then we should probably look elsewhere.

Will said...

Agreed, but I feel like we have the potential to ge there.

Zanatos said...

Carlo is no doubt a great manager, but I will wait until the summer to judge Rodgers. For now I`m not interesting in getting in any other manager. If by the summer we arent playing well and winning, then I would consider looking a option.

I don`t think there is anything wrong with FSG looking early though, not as early as Decemeber, but by the end of feb, it would make sense, if they wanted to keep options open. It happens pretty much everywhere, and is just part of the game. Spurs sacked Redknapp and had AVB hired that night, which showed they had been talking to AVB for a while. It may not be a nice part of the game, but in many ways it is how it should be done. When you replace a manager, you want it done fast. No wasted time waiting for the new guy, while your transfer targets go amiss, or cant be sorted as the new manager might want different players.

RT said...

Why is this? What have you heard.

Jason Carr said...

Sorry bud the players you mention aren't better than what we have. The centre backs are similar ability to what we have. The keeper is old. The attacking players are average or potential again, we have that already.

Jason Carr said...

well were about as far backwards as we can go so the only way is forwards

Nige said...

Brendan has got us playing good football on the whole this season. We really do control a lot of games and we do create the most chances in the league. The problem he has or we have is that we need really class players to take us to the next level and without champions league football that is hard to achieve. We need players like ter Stegen/ Hummels/Sakho/gotze/Eriksen/ etc etc

Hmautomitive_info said...

I agree with a lot of your comments , some of our fans are now starting to accept mediocrity and some even see it as progress sadly this is the beginning of a downward spiral that has to stop. Whilst i would like Rodgers to be a success the sad fact is that the job is too big for him and he is out of his depth, nothing personal.

Gaz said...

The main problem we have is our squad depth. Our first 11 is strong but our depth is weak. The only players I would sell is Carroll and Spearing, Reina is still a top quality keeper, Borini has been unfortunate with his foot injury but is a good player and will get better with game time. Unless we get another CB in, I wouldn't get rid of Coates either. I do agree with Marco Rojas though, he has been on fire this year in the A-League, outperforming Del Piero. No need buying Honda as we already have a strong midfield now, maybe get another DM in to provide competition to Lucas. But yet we can blood Coady into that position. Honestly, we only really need to buy two or three and bring up some of our youngsters, therefore saving money to buy those two or three more experienced players who will undoubtedly cost more.

Gaz said...

How about both of you act like proper Liverpool fans and get behind your team. Hodgson and Dalglish put us back, Rodgers is slowly but surely building something, it was never going to happen in the first season. Give him 2 or 3 seasons and if we haven't made progress, then by all means "future endeavour" him, but until then, we need stability. We do not want to become like Chelsea.

Re4dell said...

areyou the next manger in deguise, please apply asp because we are in desperate need of true leadership

Gaz said...

His sacking record is down to the fact that he is also a young manager. Mourinho has been sacked the same amount of times as Rodgers has. Rafa is another manager who at the same age as Rodgers had been sacked numerous times, however he has won the La Liga twice, has won the Uefa Cup, the Champion's League, the FA Cup, he has won just about everything a domestic manager can win.

Gaz said...

Our defence isn't as bad as a lot of people make out it is this season.

SirBP said...

So he has made Kenny's signings work is that what you are saying?

Allen wasn't signed to score goals (he has been average though)

Borini has been injured for 4 months so how you can judge him is a mystery. (isn't good enough ATM though)

Assaidi hmmmm he has done one i think!

So the lads that BR has brought in from the reserves don't deserve a mention because he didn't coach them for years, but he has given them a chance? and only Flanagan has been a let down.... You still need to look out side the box, football was awful under RH Gung-ho under KD and the results proved that, i will judge BR this time next season not not 7 months into a project.

Gaz said...

However Sturridge has 4 goals in 6 appearances and he is a Rodgers signing.

Gaz said...

FSG aren't going to invest any more $? What was this January window? If they were going to get rid like they did with Dalglish, they wouldn't have bought any players and yet they did. And what you and so many other fans don't realise is the tiki taka style is a modified style of the game we ourselves made famous in the 70s and 80s, a style called pass and move. Rodgers is bringing this style back to LFC, but a more updated style.

OriginalChan said...

Sadly and admittedly, I am being conditioned to accepting the lowering standards. Conditioned by what we have done in the last few years. To have high standards, you have to back it up from time to time. We haven't backed it up for a long time. When that happens, standards drop or at least mine does, sadly. How do we make this downgrading of standards stop?

Gaz said...

This is going to be the case while we are refurbishing Anfield, much like what happened with Arsenal. Now Arsenal are starting to buy bigger name players, Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud, all established players and all bought because the club built a stadium and now have the revenue to be able to afford them. By the way, our scouting has brought in Luis Suarez, Jose Enrique, Daniel Sturridge, so it hasn't done too badly.

Charlessamuel said...

new players are needed and just because we brought in sturridge in Jan and  then coutinho does not mean we are fine for options, that's why last summers window was a complete mess!!!

face it we need to buy better quality and that's that, until we do we are going to carry on relying on just Suarez, Gerrard and Sturridge???

fsm - have to pay out and for better quality of player, rather then going for such young players that have yet to do anything of real note, you can see when you look at the team we are about 5 quality more solid pros lacking? pay out of give up

Varun said...

These so called fans I tell you!!!!! I think we are becoming another chelsea with fans asking for the manager to get sacked!!!!! Crying like small kids for something!!!! Give the F**KING man time you M*R*NS!!!!! You keep talking about Mourinho, Mourinho needs a club which has lots of cash to spend and with the new rules being implemented that would be too risky and simply impossible!!!!! Do you supposedly true fans know what a project is?? It takes time to implement and to build!!!!! Liverpool were not playing such football for years so they did not have the foundation and type of players required to play the type of football played under brendan!!!! So new foundation had to be laid!!!! New players fitting the philosophy brought in and we're not a man city or PSG or chelski!!!!!! It will definitely take time!!!!! And you keep talking about rafa's record, roy's record and dalglish's record but look at the players at their disposal and now!!!!! Pointwise:
1. Benitez team were for sometimes ranked first in the UEFA list so he had a foundation to build upon.
2. Roy got his team so no big deal.
3. Dalglish had many seasoned pros to call upon like the bellamys, kyut, etc...

Does Rodgers have the same privileges?? Thats a big NO!!!!!!!!
He has not many experienced players and he is building a team a core of youngsters for the future for the SUSTAINABLE FUTURE!!!! Because you guys do not want to be compared to chelsea of 2/3 season wonders??!!! And also mourinho has a reputation of damaging a club from the inside before leaving it!!!! Look at Inter and madrid now!!! And if Ancelotti cannot cut it at chelsea and PSG both having money to spend then what will he be able to do with liverpool??? Are we run by Sheiks/Abramovichs??!!!!

M. said...

Buyout payment to Carlo & PSG, compensation to BR &
his backroom staff, then recruitment of Ancellotti's backroom staff,
clear-out of players not wanted by new Manager 'll cost us at least
20mn.  If we add another 20mn with that & allow BR to buy some good
players to improve the starting XI (most of the current players remain
to boast the squad depth) is a far better option.

Honestly speaking, I don't back Ancellotti that much.  If we are to change BR, we should go for someone like Morinho, Klopp, Guardiola, Conte or Deschsmps, but that's not going to happen.  FSG made the first mistake of appointing KK for long-term.  Had they gone for someone with long experience (like Gus Hiddinks, Van Gaal, Cappelo or Lippi) we would have been in very good shape by this time.

Hmautomitive_info said...

We managed to get to two cup finals last year winning one of them , Yes the final league position was poor but surely this year is worse unless we win the Europa Cup. you have to bear in mind that BR has had money but most his purchases have been poor  , Borini , Allen (Very poor) , Sahin (now gone) , Ossaidi who at least deserves a chance but BR knows best Sturridge contrary to my fears so far so good, we criticize Kenny's signings but Henderson , Downing , Enrique are getting more game time at present

imoff said...

Rodgers need at least 2 seasons and a few more good signings a strong Central defensive Midfielder,a Left Back, Centre Back, and another proven goal scorer in the summer.Carroll,Spearing,(Skrtel maybe )will definitely be sold in the summer and then we can see where we are at the end of next season and hopefully the Club won't need a new Manager.

Domestic cup finals are good but not the be all and end all for the high standards of British football these days, especially the Capital One Cup (such is the importance of CL now, that a top 4 finish is better than a Capital One Cup triumph). I'm talking about the league. We haven't finished in the top 4 in a long time. As each season goes by without CL money, the harder it gets to get back in there and even harder to justify a high wage bill, especially without a sugar daddy. Domestic cup win/final or not, the last few years have been a failure. When that happens, standards drop.
I agree that he hasn't been flawless in his first season at the club, nowhere near but at the end of the day, he isn't the only one at fault for the current plight of the club. This plight has been going on for years. Its been a downward spiral for several years and its hard to get out of it quickly, without a sugar daddy.

Without a sugar daddy, there is no quick fix. Hence why some are willing to give him time.

Why on earth would Celtic want Borini? There's no chance he would get in the team ahead of Hooper, Stokes, Samaras or even Watt.

Good point mate.  I watched WBA game & we are badly missing a good scorer.  At a time we had 18 vs 0 attempts & h Sturridge been playing, we could have gone 1-0 up inside 30min & it would have been totally different ball game.

Lot of negetivity against BR, because we lost the WBA game, but then had SG scored from spot, we would have been 1-0 up & WBA won't have caught us on counter attack.  Let's be honest with the Manager, he had been fighting the owners (had Sturridge been purchased in July, we would have been 10 points ahead by now), with injury, with officials & now with fans.

KD spent over 100mn for his attacking 3rd & we scored 47 goals in entire season.  It was only Skartel & Agger having a great season that we could finish 8th, but with that sort of scoring record, easily we could have finished 3/4 spot lower.  We did win a miki-mouse domestic Cup (which often now days are won by Championship sides) but last year we didn't have the Thursday-Sunday fixture & yet on Saturday, KD's team was as boring as West Ham or Stoke (no offence to WHU or SC fans).

This guy BR is learning big time & in some of his decisions/movements his inexperience is exposed, but I somehow find something special in him.  He has a chalk-out plan, has the vision & knowledge (not the experience to apply it for a top club) & most importantly has the guts.  He wasn't afraid to off-load donkey Carroll & despite lack of forwards, he stuck to his point of not fitting a squire peg in round hole.  He has the character & already has extracted better out of Enrique & Henderson, even Downing.

I do believe in BR, unfortunately more than our "Soccer" ignorant Yank owners.  Slowly, but surely we are a far improved & attractive side.  I think what BR needs a very good "Defense Coordinator", in his backroom staff to support his attacking ingstincts.  Even without big spending from the Yanks, if BR can squize out some ugly wins (playing dirty game to finish 2-1 at Emirates or Ittihad), we 'll be fighting for top 4.  & if the owners, somehow dishes out another 50mn, we 'll be fighting for top 2; I do believe.

There was a report out in autumn, a top 30 best paid managers. Moyes & O'Neill were on the list. Rodgers was not even on it. Carlo was second. May well take a wage cut if he left PSG but still, I'd imagine he would want quite a pay packet. So I wonder if FSG would be willing to pay the going rate for such a manager. Hmm.

By your standards SAF would have been sacked and United would never be the force they are. United were a mid table club and he turned that round. He did it though with 5 years behind him building and developing a team. Yes, Suarez may leave, yes Gerrard will be over the hill but who says they cannot be replaced? we may even find a better player with the money from selling Suarez you never know..look at the Torres scenario. Whatever the case i just dont see how changing a manager each year helps the team or the club, yes you may get lucky and get a good manager who comes in and does the business straight away but he is more likely to leave if he does do well. Give Brendan 2-3 years to build the club and if he does well he will stay because its his project.

I think most Liverpool fan's,myself included, would admit that BR's wasn't top of their manager wish list when he got the job.. some wouldn't even have had him on the list.

But as they say, we are where we are..

Fact is we're all frustrated, some more so than others. But myself personally I will go absolutely bonkers if we sack another manager this season !!

We have been outside the top 4 for three seasons now, under 3 different managers and soon to be 4 from 4 .. We haven't won the title for over 20 years yet the way some guy's are going on , you swear they just woke up out of a coma from circa 1989..

What this club need's more than anything else is a period of stability.. hell I'm sure the player's would appreciate some too.. Can't be good for any club changing their manager with the same regularity as their team strips.

I'm not going to get into the comparison game with past managers we have sacked because this is folly and detrimental in the extreme..

And before anybody asks .. I was never in favour of any of the previous appointments, excluding Benitez, but neither was I in favour of any of their sackings in the manner in which they came.

I know it's hard to accept but their is no instant fix for this club..  Even Mourihnio would need 3 seasons to whip this club into shape.. and as soon as people except this fact the better for all concernded.

People have taken a personal disliking to Rodger's and it's clouding their judgement..

I personally can't see how it would be good for our club to sack yet another manager.. watch a new manager dismantle the squad the previous one assembled from the previous one's efforts.. splash millions in the process only to find the same people saying the same things at the same time next season.. it's not working sack the manager !!

There's a place called stop .. this has got to be it.. I for one am ready to batten down the hatches and fight on with Rodger's plan for the club..come what may.

It's a hell alot better that this manager merry-go-round we're on .. but some people seem to enjoy the ride .. each to their own I guess.

Yes, they are here to make money.  And the proven way to make money is through Champions League football year in and year out.

Please stop this nonsense about how they don't care about the team.  To say that they "prefer to see us as a mid table team" is asinine to put it nicely.

They've spent nearly 150m in the 2.5 years they've been here.  That's the reason why Kenny got fired and that's the reason why we spent half as much this year as we did last year.

Please, if you are going to condemn the owners, don't do it for being cheap because they have shown that they aren't.

Too late.
By the way, Hodgson was out after half a season, Dalglish after one (and a half as caretaker).
Hodgson's team, managed by Dalglish's assistant has just completed the double over us with a weaker squad and our manager's previous club is about to do the same, with a manager new to the league despite losing their "best" players and also with a weaker squad, both of whom are above us in the league.
And the irony of all ironies, Dalglish's 'flops' are the only players performing and one if Hodgson's is one of the league's leading scorers.
Two signings, that were in the bag, pulled out after Dalglish was sacked. One is another of the league's leading scorers and the other a midfielder that everyone here is hoping we'll sign in the summer.

I think it boiled down to the fact that they were firing one manager who is revered and didn't want to bring in another manager who is revered.

They took advantage of the team's lack of form in the league last year to oust Kenny because they didn't know when their next opportunity would come.  You can tell the fans that Kenny needs to go because the team was 3rd worst in the prem for the 2nd half of the season last year.  But can you tell them that if the team is merely mid-table for the entirety of the year?  I don't think so.

To oust him and then place another revered figure in the same position would have placed them with yet the same issue of only being able to fire him if the team is under the near worst possible circumstances.

Amen, Imraan! No way you can say Kenny set us back. I will give you that there were some questionable player choices, but those choices were made for a system Kenny was setting up, and would have taken additional years to get implimented too. 2 cup finals, and clear improvement of Roy. I can't blame King Kenny very much at all.

That said, Brendan Rodgers has never been my first choice for coach. I was screaming for FSG to hire Pep G. But we've got him now. The lads aren't undergoing a total collapse like they did under Roy, and you can see what he is trying to do with his system, and that it might take a while to get going. FSG would be stupid to start hiring and firing like Chelski. As much as I still don't like BR as a coach, he's in the job and needs some time to get his plan going. That means a minimum of one more season. But he'd better get a lot of improvement in the summer transfer window. And we'd better be at least top-6 at the midway point next season, or fairly I think, all bets are off as to whether he gets year three.

kdoc13 said...

Next season is the mark I would go by. BR hasn't had a lot to work with this year. But next year, a lot of those younger players will have had a significant amount of starts. He'll have had two (technically three, but this past summer I'm not counting) transfer windows to bring in real quality, that has been tested and proven, and he will have had a summer to adjust his system in retropsect to what happened this year. Realistically, ManU, Everton, Man City, Arsenal and Totenham will probably be in the top-5 if things keep going as they are this year. If LFC is 6 by the Winter transfer window, I think BR will have shown the plan is working, and will have earned more years on the contract.

Imraan said...

Honestly im getting a little irritated by the  people who say that if we critisize BR or highlight his poor management skills that we must stop supporting Liverpool ...Its for this very reason that we are critisizing him CUZ we LOVE this Club and want simply the best for LVP and not settle for mediocrity ......

My last post on this club i said that BR shot himself in the foot by underestimating Oldham in the FA Cup and said that he needed a minimum of 4 points against Arsnel and man City if i was to back him ...nt only did he fail there we have now lost to WBA with yet another rocord BR has broken ( since 67 that WBA has done the double against us )

People talk about Backing the manager ..why didnt you guys back King Kenny then hey ...1stly he saved us when we were mid table going backwards and brought positivity to Liverpool .
we we actually in 5th place in December last year when we lost Lucas and we neva had Gerrard most of last season ....we also lost Saurez for 8 matches ...we beat Man U , Man City < Chelsea < Arsnel and everton last season ...played amazing football and had serious bad luck ...also FSG didnt want to assiting in sign Jelevic in Jan to help him cuz i believe they neva wanted him cuz he was a HUGH LEGEND ...but he and Clarke had the the 3rd best DEFENSIVE record and you talk about a project ..he signed on and was building a strong young British Team with Hendo < Flannagan < kelly < spearing ...
he was also mentoring Clarke who i believe would have taken over from King Kenny ( the LIVERPOOL BOOTROOM WAY ) all the players respected him ....sooo why wernt all you guys who r now screaming for BR to be given time didnt do soo when FSG sacked KK ........
Cuz all of you believed that they where gonna get a manager who was gonna deliver success ....sooo pls tell me what has BR done this season to show that hes worthy of time ...for GODSAKES we are out of the FA cup , League 1 CUP , and Champs League and maybe Europa places and its ONLY FEB ....Pls god if this man contnues with his rebuilding plan we mite get relegated

If they show the same tenacity in signing quality players,it could have been far better. Agreed BR is awful in his transfer dealing(Allen,Sahin ,Borini). But his brand of play is enjoyable and players are getting into it nicely. How many points we lost due to individual errors. How is BR responsible for that.    With two or three Sturridge like signings next season we can surely be in top4.We need some continuity '  New manager with different playing style is starting all over again and that's catastrophic

VermHat said...

I've got a reservations about the job Rodgers is doing but he needs the full season before we judge him, and barring catastrophe (or should that be further catastrophe?), I'd be surprised if you'll find me advocating his departure in the summer. I think, given the paucity of experience and goals in the squad when he took over (which he exacerbated with thus far crappy signings), we need to give him next season to really stamp his authority on the team.

I personally would like to see the start of rafalution, should never have left in the first place, guaranteed he would have done hell of a lot better, would not have paid 15 mil for Allen and 10 mil for borini, and defo not 35mil fr carroll and 20 for downing, I could go on, he has a proven track record and e key is he has unfinished business. From what I heard we bought courtinho through his advice so you never know. Brendon Rogers is getting away with it only because he is media friendly and British. FACT

If we keep looking back we're never going to go forward..

If you wanna play that game..here's three very embarassing things that happened under KD last season..

1 we paid 35 million for a player who played 6 months in th PL .. Laughing stock of world football .

2 we defended a player who racially abused antoher player, and dug our heels in about it.. Shamed our clubs name in world football.

3 We finished up with 52 points in the league .. lowest since 3 points was introduced for a win

KD also lost at home to west brom last season..Brendan Rodger's swansea took 4 points off us last season.. we also lost at home to Wigan, Fulham and we drew against relegated Blackburn, Norwich, Sunderland,Stoke and Swansea at home amongst others.. these are the embarrasing ones !

Happy day's indeed .. oh I forgot we won the mickey mouse cup.

I'm not having a go at KD but this is just to give a little balaence to your well constructed post.

All the players that you mentioned had already made up their mind to leave the club due to previous management. Check your facts first. And Swansea and WBA haven't gone through major squad turn over as liverpool. About that also you should get your facts. You should do some research first before posting anything. With liverpool losing many experienced players the writing was already on the wall about the struggles of this season. And about andy he was not at fault they promised him to bring in dempsey so it was the management who is at fault not rodgers.

Lets take an example, you're hanging out with a girl whom you just known. Don't you thrust her at first?? Therefore the same situation arose with rodgers and the management. And these types of thing you get to experience with being with the persons for more time and not by experience.

Say they promised Mourinho that they would get dempsey after dumping carroll, What would have Mourinho done??

Would he have thrusted the management or he would have told them to bring dempsey in first before letting go of carroll??

we will find out at the end of the season what FSG are made of, if they send rodgers packing after 1 season just as they did with dalglish then Liverpools only problem will be FSG! rodgers was brought in with a long term plan in mind (a younger manager) who can build for the future... if they go back on their words then who the hell will trust them in the future??? maybe given time rodgers can get it right? i hope im wrong and he can and lfc have many many years of success and the big master plan works...

well thats where were at in terms of quality signings as a club, but am pretty sure ben arfa, honda can open up a defence in a split second. diame will not be bullied and will give the other 2 midfielders ahead of him alot of freedom. brede hangeland gives us that experienced cb well miss in carragher and for a free transfer cant hurt abit. mussachio will develop into a world class centre back while still being solid for the present. marcos rojas is very talented and has alot to offer and also for free cant hurt abit. julio cesar is definately better than pepe reina. ibanez adds the needed competition for our left back position. so yh our squad will definately challenge for the title

Brendan Rodgers will take us above Everton into the top 6 it is a big jump from last season ( I was ashamed that we sacked KK it is something other clubs do however it is waht it is) and Rodgers has improved us from Kenny's team ..if he needs 2 years to take us to challenge for the league so be it ... That Mickey Mouse cup got Liverpool, and will get Swansea European football. Unless 9th place gets UEL, I don't think so though. What's worse than buying a 35m flop? Loaning him out for 2m and then complaining about a lack of forwards.

KD had a lot working against him, and that includes setting an outrageous record for woodwork strikes, having the top scorer out for 10 straight games, and the team captain out for half the season. At this point last season KD was still in both cups, had accumulated more points, and was closer to both UCL and UEL than BR is now. His team was fresher, and far more demoralized and disillusioned post-H&G than now.

Only one manager for Liverpool in the 21 year EPL history has done worse than BR by this point, and that was Souness' 92/93 season. And we all treasure that one don't we? Just imagine BR had to match the woodwork stat from last season, have Gerrard see the rest of the campaign from the sidelines and then remove Suarez for 10 straight games. Would we even get to 52 points?

There is obviously an arrow of time insisting we all go forward, but forward may not have to include a manager who has no experience, and will have to learn at the club. Hiring a young manager is not like buying a young player. The player can be put into the reserves or loaned out. We are all going to have to watch as BR figures out how to beat KD's #2 over 2 seasons, and somehow inspire his team to beat a team in the top 10 hopefully as soon as this season, but probably only next season, along with 10m Borini's first league goal.

If he wanted to bring players in, Maxi & co had to go. For a club that has had no CL money coming in and with a high wage bill (was high before the changes in the summer), it wouldn't have been wise to keep squad players who were on considerable wages. We got young players now from the reserves as squad players such as Suso, Robinson, Wisdom, Sterling, etc, who no doubt are much cheaper, in terms of wages. It had to happen, as we had a very high wage bill for a club that has had no CL money coming in for a few seasons. So I back FSG in that regard mostly, in relation to cutting the wage bill. To give the new manager enough to room in the wage bill (which is reasonable, as new manager needs to bring in his new signings), they had to let go of some of the high earning squad players, which is what Maxi, Bellers & Kuyt were in their last season, squad players. It was financially reckless to have such a high wage bill and no CL money to back it up. It had to happen. No doubt about it, especially with FFP on the horizon. According to report in Spring 2012, we had a higher wage bill than Juventus and Spurs for example. One a league winner. It is the same reason why Villa are full of young players now, as they have had a ridiculously high wage bill for a club that has done almost nothing for a decade. They had a higher wage bill than Spurs in that report. So they had to cut down in the summer (though maybe not as much as they ended up doing! Far too inexperienced now). We had a wage bill that was more than double Newcastle's, which is insane. To support a CL-level wage bill, you can't go without CL football for a few seasons. And when there are clubs out there in the same league who have finished in decent league positions with much less wage bill, than it is just financially wasteful to carry on with such a high wage bill as well as dangerous.

FFP + no CL money = no high earning squad players. Its as simple as that and rightly so.

The wage bill was too high.

Bellers wanted to go anyway, it is no secret he was family-sick, hence going back to Cardiff, especially after his mate's death, Gary Speed.

Yep, Rodgers' signings haven't been great in their first season but neither were KK II's in their first season, who are now playing much better under Rodgers. Yep, he has wanted to bring in familiar players but he has done a fine job on the flops of last season.

The Yanks supposedly put results at the top of the list.If these anti-Rafa people are happy to lose but play nice passing football with no end product well i pity you.Mourinho,Rafa and Fergie are the 3 big successful managers and all play safety first football were the result matters. When their teams are 2-0 up then they start to play the fancy attractive football when the games won.To me watching LFC going to Juve getting a 0-0 to get us through to the next round was fantastic kicking every ball praying for the final whistle for the whole 97 minutes. Now we wlive in a different era with these plastic fans saying we just want to play our pretty football and be picked off by every team we play but at least we passed it around.

OriginalChan said...

Not agreeing or disagreeing with the point of your post but no way were/are Spurs a poorer team on paper than us. A team that has done better than us in the league for the last few seasons (since we finished 2nd I think) I would have taken more than 50% of the side that started against us at WHL over our first XI. Wish we had gone Dembele last summer, instead of Allen. Brilliant player and made a brilliant impact already.

Firstly I'm struggling understanding your grammar and or sentencing but I get the gist..  you as a fan would wish to chop BR and change manager right now? (or in 3 games as you put it) Really? who made you owner?? I support our club in whatever state it's in as it's support that gets family through tough times.. you sound like a petulant child smashing it's pram around when things go bad..
You're treating your club like a lot of other plastic supporters in that you want instant results, Or positive results everytime..I suggest you check Alex Fergusons history.. then you'll have a clue as to how to BUILD something worth building..
Things have to have roots to build on, just ask Man City. I'm not saying BR is the be all and end all but once we have a base of 'how to play' and we 'get it together', then things can progress in a sensible manner.. If you watched Manure and Real tonight, just look at how they plan and manufacture every move, It's called Sustainability and longevity, but has to start somewhere, Listen to what everyone's saying about being the next Chelsea, It makes perfect sense NOT to sack the manager, the players will play for someone who nourishes their talents and that man at the moment is BR. Just watch the training sessions on LFCTV online (if you're a fan you'll be a member remember)
and watch how happy everyone is at the moment, Its plain to see that the entire squad is happy and competing to get in the first team, now in my eyes that's 50 rungs up the ladder from last year or the year before, We all know the reasons the team fell apart, they left (Xabi, Torres, Masch, Sami, etc) along with idiot owners, that all left a gaping hole that BR is now tasked to fill, in his own way, and he's doing it, of course He'll make mistakes, I make mistakes at work and I bet so do you!
Cut the guy some slack and wind your neck in...

OriginalChan said...

Kuyt, Maxi and Bellers were hardly cheaper squad players, in terms of wages, than the promoted reserve players. FSG wanted and needed to cut the wage bill. So they had to go, especially if they wanted the new manager to sign his own players. The club did try to go for Dempsey but offer was too low. Secondly, Bellers wanted to go anyway as he was messed up after Speed's death and family was living back in Wales, hence him going back to Cardiff as he was family-sick. Yep, Swansea & co are doing well but we finished last season below Newcastle and we had a wage bill that was more than double their's.

'turned a team.....into a mid table medicore team'

we were in mid table mediocrity too last season. we were hardly better before that season too, after the season we finished 2nd in. Domestic cup finals/wins can only hide so much of the league performance, for a club of our standing.

No, we haven't progressed this season, on a much lesser wage bill and younger squad. But we're hardly worse in the league.

I wanted KD to stay another season, majority wanted change as it was described as not good enough in the league. In the end i understood and said' as long as BR does better than KD he will have my backing as all i want ot see is progress. That is not happening so if he is sacked so be it. The fact is i agree it takes time for us to win the premiership but for us to win the prem we go forward, not like a shuttle but slowly, how is coming mid table going forward slowly? i would of been happy with just missing out on 4th but giving it a good go, but being 12 points behind and not won against a top 12 side all season, that spells disaster. At least last year i loved watching liverpool all season, this year its predictable and boring.

Matthew Rankin said...

I agree as well where we ought to be in the table and the results are true. Don't get me wrong I'm a Liverpool supporter through and through. Watching the champions league game today, Man -U and Real Madrid. They are years ahead of us in technique and skill. Being Liverpool we should be playing champions league football, but watching the game we are no where near competing yet. We have fallen very behind and we need to re-structure and move up. I feel it will take us years to achieve this I believe we have to start with a solid core and grow from there, until then we won't be progressing.

Its the one stat that matters,no other stat matters except the one which says how many goals youve scored.this is happening every game cannot you see the opposing teams are letting us have the ball, they are letting us play our little passing game and building up our stats, then they pounce on the break,or they disrupt our free flowing passing game from our defence haha, put pressure on our defenders and they are all laughing at us,every club is laughing at us with our niave tactics as though we have a right to play like Barca with our players. You also mock Rafa,Rafa has won 2 consecutive eufa european manager of the year awards with 2 different clubs he also won consecutive major european trophies wih 2 clubs,he won 2 la ligas with unfashionable Valencia,he would have had most of the Spanish world cup winning team here if it wasnt for the Yanks,he also created the wealth at LFC making us a worlwide phenomenon after Istanbul and almost repeating the miracle 2 years later.Rafa had thw worlds best talent begging to come here yet Hicks and gillette wouldnt pay the £14m we had agreed for David Silva,Rafa was up against a brick wall in the end. Then look whats happened since 3 managers 28 new players over £200m spent on transfers and everyone a failure except Suarez, we are a laughing stock.I pray everyday for Rafa to come back, but i think its better if he goes to Real Madrid because of the way he was treated, since hes gone we are nothing, when he was here we were the no1 ranked club in europe for 2.5 years.

I was merely trying to demonstrate that if you wanted to you could paint him in bad light too, like guy's calling for BR's head are doing.

I could make a case for BR's sacking if I wanted to.. but I simply choose to steadfastly refute the call for a FIFTH manager in four seasons.. !!

Seriously Liverpool supporters need to get a grip..

We need stability .. The club was made great by the foundations of stability , continuity and great support from an educated fan base.. All of which are seriously lacking at our club at the moment.

Far better football than under Rafa....? I suppose you have forgotten the scintillating football we played when we destroyed Man U and Real 4-1 amongst other great games.

If you are satisfied being under Everton, West Brom and Swansea which I really cannot see any excuse for then by all means keep smoking what you've been smoking but in the "real world" it is unacceptable losing 8 times already this season with 3 months to go and not a single win against a team above us.

I also think it is unacceptable for any manager, let alone BR for saying he can't fault his players after losing 2-0 to West ******* Brom for the 2nd time this season. Praising a team after losing seems to have become the norm and breeds complacency not to mention a numb acceptance of how far we have fallen.

Shanklys_sons said...

Sorry for my earlier post. It just irks me how far we have fallen. BR should be given until the end of the season and have his position reviewed. Agree with your point on Benitez but also think it was far too soon and to large a gamble to give Rodgers the post so soon. We would have been better off keeping Clarke as a manager to see what he could do or going for more experience.

It just kills me that when Rafa was available he wasn't even given an interview with the likes of Martinez rated higher. Maybe this was FSG's masterplan of downsizing us into an overachieving  midtable Club in squad strength before flogging us off again.

Any news on the new stadium??

my dear Hmautomitive_info, it is BR's first year in charge of Liverpool and he is trying to make tiki-taka perfect and he just needs time. First look at the depth in defence carra is retiring, coates is still young and has not influenced BR for the chances given to him, skrtel is out of his form making a number of errors and has been benched and agger is not at his complete best and he has accepted the mistake he did against WBA to allow McCauley to head the ball towards goal it is evident as we see in last season Liverpool had conceded 39 goals compared to 34 already this season with 12 matches remaining they conceded cheap goals against man city at anfield and even at Etihad due to the mistake made by reina and conceded two goals in half a minute against arsenal those were winnable games and all of them ended in draws dropping 6 points and therefore has the tag of LIVERPOOL HAS NOT YET BEATEN ANY OF TOP 6 TEAMS so don't blame him for implementing the technique but blame him for not signing defenders and the form of his defenders

Put it this way, its considerably worse this season than last year. Because of our attacking emphasis, it's left our defences a lot more open and vulnerable; you only have to look at the first game against west brom to see what ramifications the 'tiki taka' philosophy bore on our defence. Yes it has improved since then, but I'm confident that without looking at stats that we are nowhere near being the 3rd best defensive team.

Nicholas Blackley said...

Chelsea's defence in the Mourinho days was better with the combo of Clarke and Mourinho, than the partnership of KD and SC. Mourinho is noted for having a defensive penchant, and you saw the results of that after it was mixed with Steve Clarke's similar defensive nous.

Funny that this article got so many responses, there's little to no chance this will ever happen. Rodgers is FSG's manager, the one that THEY hired and anyone can see that it will take more than just a season to see any real progress. I don't think it's fair that certain individuals on here are being targeted because they don't agree with the 'project'. Even though I don't agree with a lot of the negative comments aimed at the manager, everyone is entitled to their view (Isn't that the whole point of this thing?).

Steve Clarke wouldn't have been able to stop Skrtel from losing focus too much during a match.

Hmautomitive_info said...

Much as we think the domestic cups are not important , A Good cup run generates revenue it also gets us into the Europa league (as 4th place fro CL Qualification was out of our reach and looks the same this year) which again is a revenue stream for the club to sign players / finance the wage bill. Now if we do not finish high up the League or win the Europa League (as we are out of the domestic cups) this year then again this is a step backwards and yes it is mediocre mid table. The result will be less money to spend next year , bigger players wanting to leave and we will be unable to attract let alone pay wages for better players due to tighter budget controls, this downward spiral sounds a bit like Leeds Utd of recent years. To top it off if we did have a big name proven manager they may be able to attract better players which is something Rodgers may not be able to do.
The players who were earning too much last year and not really of any use to the club like say Aurelio Cole to name a few , we were right to be move on
