Confirmed: LFC to sign €20m Uruguay star this weekend. Good deal...?

Two Uruguayan journalists - Rodrigo Romano and Edward Pinon - claim that Liverpool will complete the signing of Bolgona attacker Gaston Ramirez this weekend.

Posting on his Twitter feed last night, Romano - a football journalist who works for channel VTV Uruguay - said:

"Based on the information I have, Liverpool will sign Gaston Ramirez this weekend for 20 million Euros"

Edward Pinon, the Editor of Uruguayan newspaper 'El Pais' also confirmed that Ramirez is a done deal, stating on Twitter that a fee of £16m (€20m) had been agreed.

Liverpool FC transfers - Gaston Ramirez

Pinon and Romano are respected journalists so there's no reason to think they would make any of this up.

Ramirez has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool over the last year, but the sticking point always seemed to be the transfer fee, with Bologna Vice-President Maurizio Setti holding out for €20m:

"For Ramirez, the negotiations start with at least €20m. The biggest interest has come from the Premier League and the Bundesliga. Ramirez is a player who will make a difference to any team because he is a born champion"

It appears that Liverpool may now be willing to meet that valuation. The club face competition from Wolfsburg, who have also put in an offer, but with Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates already at the club - and currently on Olympics international duty with Ramirez - I think it's safe to say that Liverpool have a distinct advantage.

  1. Fantastic news if true!!!!

  2. Would like to see him come. I hope he can settle easily and adapt to the pace of the EPL better and faster than Aquillani. Maybe they can even play together? :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. That's the point. Is it true? So many rumours and false starts.  Personally I don't think we have enough in the coffers for him and a couple of others, unless that is, we sell someone to City.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Suggestion is that Aquilani could go to Bologna in a part-ex deal??.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 'Romano CONFIRMS lfc to sign..this weekend..' why using the word confirm?? was there any previous news that he will be signed this weekend? or you just using this word to make it look more appealing?

    ReplyDelete
  6. and who would you be employing that we would be selling to city?

  7. great player and if true would be a good addition to the reds squad.

  8. Would be brillant play upfront in a front three. Suarez, sturridge, ramirez wow hopefully it happens!:)

  9. This is great news I hope its true we need some quality additions and so far there has been no signings for us, let Aquilani go to bologna,he is keen to stay in Italy anyway, that would reduce the transfer fee and shape up the wage bill .

  10. I would love to have Ramirez to LFC. He has much qualities and he`s young. Can be a worldclass player...

  11. Really hope this is true! Would show some really ambition from lfc if we were to sign this guy with everyone else he has been linked to!

I get the feeling Suarez will play wide of three forwards this season.  It's a position he occupied for Ajax and where he should be for us.   If Ramirez is on the other flank there WILL be fireworks.  I may be wrong but even big Andy can't fail to find the net with those two flanking him.  I'm not expecting pointless crosses to be thrown into the box either.  Suarez and Ramirez have the potential to create proper chances and score goals that will make the LFC faithfuls' jaw drop.

Let's hope Tottenham don't make a late bid........

  14. I know well Gaston Ramirez. He's a tricky and natural right winger, but obviously E20ml. is too much money for him. Good Player, but not a good deal for the Club. We're really overpaying any player....

    ReplyDelete
  15. and don't forget He plays his trade in a smaller italian Club like Bologna and He totally lacks of international experience. Good player, but the price tag is too high: We risk to put another player under a large pressure.

Unfortunately the only manager who has really got consistent value for money was Houllier even though I hated his style of play.  When Rafa struck gold he also struck gold big time too.

If we are going to pay over the odds we should pay over the odds on someone who has the potential to one day win the Ballon d'Or which Downing, Henderson or Carroll never had.

When it comes to real talent as apposed to English hype, in the words of Geoff Boycott " if you're going to flash, flash hard!"

  19. You lot are full of shit, not one of you have heard of him,if his valuation is high, the bitter reds automatically presume he's good, one name, Carroll. I'll say no more. LAL

  22. Everyone saying get rid of aqualani just because we're getting Ramirez is deluded. Two completely dIfferently players, aqualani is a box to box playmaker with quality passing and good dribbling ability (much better than Adam) if anyone Adam needs to go. Ramirez is apart of an attacking front three. A midfield that consists of Lucas, aqualani and gerrard is one to be reckoned with. Spearing is the understudy to Lucas, henderson the understudy to aqualani and shelvey understudy to gerrard. It makes sense getting rid of Adam.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Quite right but you try telling that to the president of Bologna???, Charlie who???. I rate Aquilani but will BR????

    ReplyDelete
  24. JK, Where is Aquilani right now ? I don't see him in our training photos?

    ReplyDelete
  25. He got married a few days ago, so he's probably on his honeymoon.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Aquilani want's to join a club that will win top honours, not a mid table team like Liverpoo. Liverpoo are on the slide get used to it,even your piss poor Neighbours finished above you lot. And too all the knobheads on ja606,fuck you,yes that's right fuck you,you bunch of grasses.

  30. not really 20 million euros is about £16 million pounds which is good value we are over paying by 2-3 million which is a huge improvement on over paying for downing and carroll and henderson which was a combined £75 million so a shrewd by it is

    ReplyDelete
  31. How does it matter whether he is training or not?? Last season he trained with Liverpool but ended up in Milan.

    ReplyDelete
  32. As to formation could we not play like spain with no striker, just six midfield players two holding say a 4-2-1-3.

                                         Lucas           Henderson

                                                adam/Agu/cole

                             Suarez           Gerrard             Ramirez

    ReplyDelete
  33.  it unlikely he'll end up like downing, his from south America and is highly rated in Italy and Uruguay, he can do a better job than downing right? plus if he was english he would of been overpriced like 40m,

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hope this is true, mate! The boy will be a great addition to the team. Pardon me for being skeptical, folks, so far all the transfer news I read in sites like soccernet are news about our players being targeted or wanting to leave instead of new players targeted by us or wanting to come. So my cheer will come only after new players arrived and not anytime before that.

A side note here, any takers for these dudes, CA, AC, SD and JH?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Absolutely Great news if true, much better than that Sigurd-who

  36. Adam is better than henderson

  37. For a 21 years old, top Latin creative player, already a starter for last WC semi-finalist Nation, if 16mn is 2/3 mn higher, they for 3 English garbage, KD over paid at least 40 mn & Sir Alex at least 10 mn for Young & Jones.

If Ramirez is available for 16mn, we shouldn't offer more than 8mn for Sturridge, & I have seen enough of them both.  GR can finish as the next Forlan.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have seen Ramirez, at least 5 full games & lot of high lights this season; had he been English, he would have a price tag of 35mn at least (U know 35mn is a key figure).  Even without the price tag, you can differentiate a donkey with a horse.

By the the way, I never thought high of Carroll, for his country of origin.  How many creative players England has produced in last 35 years?  Show me one who can stand by the side of Fransiscoly, Forlan or Suarez?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Last year, Acqua was probably the best player in pre-season, raciest KD loaned him to Milan to clear the path of his expensive British garbage.  Actually, it's a test for BR's managerial capacity as well, if he opts for "Championship Zidane - Adam" over someone playing over 80 times for Italy in different age group & National side.

Acqua 'll be a perfect player for pass & move 4231 (433) style.  I think, he & Lucas can form the best midfield pairing in PL, with SG playing just behind Suarez & a couple of winger. (Obviously u could understand the sort of respect that I have for Carroll, Henderson & Downing - you need big ass to warm the bench).

Let me check my post again....did I say he got every signing right or did I say consistent value for money........hmmmmmm

Sami 2.5 Henchoz 3.5 Babbel free, Risse 4m, Vignal 500,000, Didi 8, Smicer 3.5, Titi 2.5, Kewell 5m, Barmby 6m.  Even the great hopes of the time Le tallec and Pongolle came for a joint 3m with most of Europe chasing them.  His signings admittedly were not the greatest in the world but you can't say we didn't get what we payed for.

Cisse got 18 goals in his last season.  Not bad eh?

Diouf and Diao weren't good enough.  But I'm talking consistent value for money or at the very least not paying over the going rate at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Theycallmemrburt7:59 p.m., July 07, 2012

When we paid 5.5 mill for Biscan he was being chased by Europes top sides (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Bi%C5%A1%C4%87an).  the "Bish" was ok.  It wasn't the lads fault Houllier played him at LW, RW and most unfortunately center half to destroy the boys footballing soul.  His position was central midfield.  I hardly ever saw him play there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i think we'll see gerrard in a deeper role.he showed in the euros that he can be more disciplined.i hope rodgers putsmore impetus on lucas's attacking side of his game.he has plenty of pace and should be contributing with a few goals.it will be interesting to see how the side develops.

  55. I will believe this when it is announced on the LFC website, there is far too much speculation for my liking. As for signing duds SAF has signed a few in his time Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Massimo Taibi, to name a few my point is that if we have to compete against Man C & Chelsea we have to be astute in our dealings and until the will he won't he speculation ceases and a sense of reality dawns we will continually be linked to all comers and their seedy agents.

    ReplyDelete
  56. More than likely, it's Spearing who will drop down the pecking order with Henderson understudying to Lucas or Aqua IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is the kind of signing that I was desperately
    waiting
to hear about. A non english player bought outside of the premier league who is young and talented possessing flair and creativity, capable of scoring goals and assisting his team mates plus he even represents good value for money at just 16million pounds. Now lets pray that this is true. It will send a signal to our rivals that we are back on track and that they better beware of us...

  69. I THINK €20m is a snap him up price if these storys are true? Ive been talking about Gaston Ramirez, as a potential signing for LFC for over 2seasons now. Hope these storys have substance, If so thats one signing that excites me, more than any other this transfer window. Suarez, Ramirez, and i hope the rumours about A,Johnson come to fruition, then we would be back in business and goals galore without doubt. Come on Brenden start your Anfield career with a big bang. 91. for 2.5 million to charlton? hardly megabucks.would have prbably got that for smicer.

    ReplyDelete
  92. if we have an emphasis on keeping the ball then that should take away the emphasis of lucas just screening the back four and giving the ball to gerrard.i think lucas has far more potential to be tapped into than henderson does.he has a great touch and has pace.he isn't afraid of getting into the box but his finishing is pretty woeful at times.i think he's a player that could grow under rodgers's philosophy.

    ReplyDelete
  93. borini has promise but i don't think he has done anything to suggest that he is the type of signing to get us up and running.dempsey would be a smart signing if the fee isn't over the odds.

    ReplyDelete
  94. "There's no reason to think they would make any of this up"??
There's a whole industry based around transfer rumours atm - 'respected journalists' churn out spurious rumours every day on various tv & radio shows, or in the papers.

Anyways, I've only seen Ramirez play twice and tbh I wasn't overly impressed; particularly due to the fact that he didn't even operate as a wide-man, which I think Liverpool are so desperately in need of.

Hopefully he does arrive, and my initial impressions were well off...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Suarez is overrated by my fellow liverpool fans in my view, who have already put him up on a pedestal. From what I have seen of him in a Liverpool shirt, Suarez is a great dribbler of the ball (nearly up there with Hleb in that regard in PL) but (beyond that, Hleb didn't offer much else) beyond that, not sure what else Suarez does that is worthy of him being put up on such a pedestal. For a striker of his hype, the consistency of his finishing is very average (at best) in PL so far. Closer to Afonso Alves, instead of Van Basten, in relation to successful Dutch league exports at the moment at club level. I guess in times like these and with Gerrard going into the twilight of his career, we need someone to put our hopes on and hype him up.

Big deal if Zidane rates Francescoli (who was quite a player from my very vague memory), as this is the same fellow that rated English players Gerrard and Scholes (technically, far better than the overrated Rooney. Class act, especially for who he plays for) very highly. Swings and roundabouts.

    ReplyDelete
  96. We haven't signed anyone yet, let alone anyone 'great' :(

    ReplyDelete
  97. Absolute thumbs up, mate! But 3-5 years is unless all top teams come to a standstill, which is impossible. A quarter of a new stadium vanished together with stupidity of KD and Comolli. Realistically, we have smaller stadium compared to Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle, we don't have oil compared to Chelsea and Man City, even Tottenham is planning for a new stadium. So where are we heading now? I thank God whenever I think of LFC finally got rid of that 2 malignant tumors. We will be stronger this season!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I doubt this will happen at all. When was the last time a LIverpool transfer was confirmed by two journalists on Twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Headline should read "Claimed Confirmed" as it has not actually been confirmed but I can understand your phrasing.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Except that he wanted to keep Smicer.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Maybe see his achievements for Uruguay too

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm not bothered about what he does for his country in terms of how good he is, it is what he does in a Liverpool shirt that matters to me and to date, beyond his dribbling, he hasn't been all that impressive and that is not even taken into the consideration the hassle that has come with his presence.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I haven't seen anything that suggests that Ramirez is as good as Sturridge, much less better than him. Whether it be looking at stats, highlights or just looking at the class of the players in a live match situation.

I haven't seen much of Ramirez but he looks like an attacking midfielder, whereas in attacking positions Liverpool are in desperate need of wingers/wide-forwards/strikers.

Hopefully the hype about Ramirez is true anyway, but I won't buy into it until Liverpool have actually bought him.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Liverpool Echo has just rejected this as a rumor stating that Liverpool have not approached for Ramirez!

    ReplyDelete
  105. whats wrong with cisse

    ReplyDelete
  106. smicer for one year

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yet another duff rumour. When will they stop?

    ReplyDelete
  108. not better than gerrard

    ReplyDelete
  109. Mate, look at the rubbish he has for team mates. He got more from Meireles last season, then from the rest of his team mates put together.

    ReplyDelete
  110. His finishing was still cack though, especially for all the hype he gets.

But I suppose we should blame his team mates for his finishing (might as well blame them for all that is wrong in the world too), despite the boots when shooting are on his feet, not on theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yes, Cisse, what a bad signing, two broken legs in one season, still managed to get back and knock in a penalty in istanbul, scored in our cup final win and found the net enough times to not be considered a flop. Fabio Porto must know some clever foxes in his neck of the woods.

    ReplyDelete
  112. No doubt he will get injured while he's out there!

    ReplyDelete
  113. That was more his style beforehe joined us. He was more like the kind of player we need now.

I think that our main priorities are an attacking playmaker, someone to replace Gerrard in the long term, and another striker. With a bit of tactical nous, good management of the youngsters and value for money in the transfer market, there is no reason why this season should not see a fair improvement on last. We should be looking to, at least, overtake Newcastle and Everton and put pressure on Tottenham and Chelsea, who will suffer if they lose Modric and Drogba, respectively. There's no one who can be guaranteed to replace those players. Arsenal are always vulnerable, so we really should be aiming for between 4th and 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Ask you a question JK, how do you know the two reporters and how do you know they are respected? Unless you are from Uruguay yourself I can not see how you can be an expert on this. Well looks like they lied, they did, cos it never happened
