'Shocked' LFC Legend urges FSG to reject 'top quality' manager candidate...

Steve Nicol's support for Kenny Daglish has been unwavering over the last eighteen months, and only hours before his former boss was sacked, the ex-Reds defender was still trying to convince people that the Carling Cup meant that Liverpool's season had been a success. Like many fans, Nicol is upset by Dalglish's sacking, and he's urged FSG not to replace him with one of the leading candidates for the job.

Reacting to the news of Dalglish's sacking on ESPN, Nicol - who won every trophy under the sun during his time at Liverpool - raged:

"I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked. I find it strange that they would fly him over to tell him that he's sacked, and even stranger, that they would wait until Wednesday to release the news.

"I'm not quite sure what happened in that meeting. Knowing Kenny, he's no shrinking violet, and if there was something to be said, he would've said it. There must have been a disagreement, and they've terminated his contract".

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is currently second favourite behind Andre Villas Boas for the Liverpool job, and he's just the kind of young, progressive manager FSG want to appoint. Nicol, however, is not convinced that the Spaniard is the right man. He argued:

"Roberto Martinez has great potential, but I'm not quite sure that avoiding relegation with Wigan three years in a row is the kind of CV [FSG should be looking at] to take over one of the biggest clubs in the world".

Nicol is not the only one who feels this way. I conducted a survey two days ago asking if LFC fans would like to see Martinez as Liverpool manager, and the results were pretty predictable:

* Almost 6000 people voted.
* 63% of participants voted NO to Martinez taking over.

Speaking to The Telegraph last week, Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan was full of praise for the Premier League's youngest manager. He enthused:

"I think Roberto has proved he is absolute top quality, and I believe he will go to one of the top European clubs when the time is right"

Earlier today, Wigan Whelan granted Liverpool permission to speak with Martinez about the current vacancy at Anfield.

According to Bookmakers, the current top 10 candidates for the Liverpool job are:

* Andre Villas-Boas
* Roberto Martinez
* Brendan Rodgers
* Rafael Benitez
* Frank Rijkaard
* Fabio Capello
* Didier Deschamps
* Jurgen Klopp
* Harry Redknapp
* Paul Lambert

  1. I'm worried "fans" such as yourself who were clamouring for KD's head on the block will find out the meaning of the phrase "be careful what you wish for". I hope to be proven wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I agree with you 100%. Now KD is gone, what next? A relatively inexperienced manager who might find it difficult to commend the respect of key players? We forget so easily that these things play out in the minds of footballers.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Whatever happens in the next 12 months, nothing will change my view that it was the right thing for KD to go. For me, there are off-field things that are just as important as results at LFC, and Dalglish was a antagonistic curmudgeon most of the time, and - legend that he undoubtedly is - he did not publicly represent the club in a flattering manner.

After his needlessly confrontational approach to the Press; the catastrophic handling of the Suarez-Evra situation, and his endless celebration of mediocrity ('Stewart Downing is actually better than I thought!' | 'Winning the Carling Cup is progress!), an affable, pleasant manager like Martinez will be a welcome relief.

  4. Martinez is a gamble.  But....h e knows english football, been here sinsce 2001, well spoken and charming in the front of the cameras (important for FSG) , knows how to find and buy quaility players for little money and has the important spanish connection. I was hoping for Rafa but maybe a young manager like Martinez is the way to go.  AVB,  please no, Harry Readknap, yes please.

  5. I want Benitez! Martinez will be a failure if he is appointed.

  6. Jaimie Kanwar, how can you call yourself a Liverpool fan? Every article you post is negative and critical about Liverpool players and the manager. What the hell is wrong with you? It's ok to be critical, but not every flippin time! For once why don't you praise Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  7. benitez or klopp, only men who should be approached! how does narrowly avoiding relegation earn you an interview with liverpool football club its a joke

    ReplyDelete
  8. you took the words out my mouth mate and i hope suarez quits like he said and see what martinez does until xmas and kenny is back

  9. I think that Hodgson showed us that Just because of success in one club does not necessarily mean that he will be as successful. And as for Kenny Dalglish, I wish he would be given at least another season. We played really well and were unfortunate not to score and I think that maybe another player or two and we would be back to scoring goals and winning. Personally I don't think that Martinez will be a good choice because, as Nicol said, avoiding relegation is not something I would want to see on the CV of a manager

  10. what the hell is going on ..ROBERTO for liverpool...if its true i am not so sure about this yanks.... they really dont have the footballing brain and if somebody is advising them then they are wrongly done.. if u want young and vibrant manager u have avb, jurgen klopp and other but martinez.. it only shows one thing how far these owners are from reality.. why do they want him? MAY BE becoz he can be their yes man and he wouldnt cost much to hire...no high profile name is even being considered. Capello or rafa would hav been the best candidate but these lame people are blind as well... god save liverpool

  11. Jaimie, can you conduct a poll with the names above to see where the opinion lies on here?

  12. Something's wrong somewhere. We'll soon find out.

  13. thats why your not the manager, he had to back his player. Even people like gus poyet who has no association with suarez came out and said thats what they say in south america. Would you rather enjoy yourself and have big days out at wembley, or only finish 4th and get no satisfaction from it?

    ReplyDelete
  14. With respect, you can't surely be as narrow-minded as this?  Everything is relative; you need to look at Wigan's resources; expectations; ability to attract players; style of play etc, and consider Martinez's impact in relative terms. Same applies to any 'low profile' manager.

Example: Arsene Wenger was in the Japanese league before he joined Arsenal. The J League is not a quality league, but look what Wenger has done for Arsenal.  I'm sure I could think of a dozen other examples, but I don't have time.

rafa has won everything (World Club Cup, Champions League, Won twice Spanish League with Valencia 3 finals in champions league), he is into stats and tactics, revamp Liverpool youth team for the better, makes good appointments (as Liverpool still retain his youth academy staffs). Makes Torres a world class striker and proved everybody wrong when clearly now we have to agree that Gerrard best position is not in the middle. Simple Jonjo Shelvey 1.5 million and Henderson 10 million, enough said. He can attract players in the Spanish league which is cheaper and clearly better technically( Approached David Silva but couldn't get the money) .

    ReplyDelete
  16. KD backed his players to the hilt, I have no problem with that. He was basically being jabbed with a sharp stick by the media at every opportunity. Let's see how pleasant Martinez will be if we are sitting 10th in November.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Many supporters are being emotional rather than objective. Kenny was a footballing legend but hardly in the same class as manager. Had there been any sign of progress such as finishing 5th or closing the points gap, it would be different. We have gone backwards in every sense. If we had gone back without or just minor investment, that would be different too. But going backward after spending 100m on rubbish players chosen solely by Kenny, continuing with him would have been foolish. We cannot experiment now. I agree with Barnes. Rafa is our best if not only option.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The odd's on Martinez have shortened drastically today and he is the firm odds on favourite at the moment which is an interesting development, probably based on the fact that an article was written in the Times (I think) stating the Clubs interest and willingness to speak to Roberto.

rafa on the other hand has drifted right out to 10-1 from 7-4....with Rogers on about 7-1 and AVB around the 3-1 mark.

After calming from yesterdays shock news of the sacking of Kenny i am looking at the situation of replacing him with a slightly more pragmatic way, we are now where we are and thats not going to change SO the business of finding the right candidate for the job is of paramount importance to Henry et el....

Who will they go for from of the list being offered will be the subject of much scrutiny and conjecture, who LFC fans want wil im sure be debated furiously and with a certain apprehension and anxiety...

I made it very clear yesterday why i didn't want rafa back and why i'd prefer a manager who perhaps would represent a better style of football etc, therefore either AVB or Martinez IMO would be on my shortlist......

BUT who i think will fit the bill as far as FSG are concerned is a different kettle of fish altogether, i just don't see Martinez or Rogers as potential candidates, there is no proof of credentials therefore both i think would/will be considered an unnecssary risk....

Henry is a very shrewd man IMO, and he hasn't made his fortunes by taking unnecessary risks.....i would imagine he would go through every detail of a managers profile with a fine tooth comb and asess their suitability as to the system he alreeady has in place....

That does IMO bring AVB and other more established managers into the frame....and im not ruling our rafa either as i think he is on their shortlist.

Whoever they decide on im sure they would have factored in many aspects of running the Club that will need new staff etc as well as how it would be perceived by the fans and more importantly the players....

There is of course a hell of a lot at stake.....they've sacked a big personality at the Club who arguable could of been successful had he not been let down so badly by certain players....i did say that if they sacked him i would understand and i do to an extent because quite clearly it wasn't workable for whatever reason, if there was any cloak and dagger stuff going on then those responsible should hang their heads in shame, for now the process of trying to move the Club onwards and upwards is going to be all important.

I am more worried that our fans or a large section of them wont give the new manager a chance  - unless its benitez but thats the last reason in the world to appoint someone  - to appease a sentimental fanbase ! A few bad results early on and it'll be Hodgson all over again  - those who wanted kenny to have another full season probably wouldnt give the likes of Martinez a 6 month honeymoon period before they start singing for Kenny or Rafa to comeback .

The last thing we need is for our managers position to become the poisoned chalice that was the NUFC job for so many years  - FSG need to get this one spot on first time around.

  20. Okay, will do later tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Martinez is one of a few managers to be interviewed so don't panic,no doubt we shall find out who is taking us forward within the next few days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Benitez already had time and resources up until 09-10 season, we only made one genuine challenge for the league, and by the end I couldn't even watch us play we were so dire. He is and was a god manager for us but I don't think it would be a good appointment.

I really think it has to be someone with big club experience at the business end of a top league, only a manager with solid credentials will be given time and space to ride out the choppy waters if there is a poor start to next season.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Please not Martinez. rafa is definitely the only top manager we can get.

  24. Shahrill Sharwani9:00 pm, May 17, 2012

Appoint Kenny was a good gesture but he is out from management for a very long time. Rafa on the on the hand is different. Playing style of the team depends on the club's squad quality. Mourinho was playing defensive when he was in Chelsea and look at Real now another example is Man City, initially they were playing defensive but as the attackers available in the squad improves in quality they playing more attacking style. Rafa clearly better than Mancini, Liverpool vs Inter enough said.

  25. No please not another hodgson! Martinez is not good enough. Saving a team from relegation 3 years in a row does not make one a good manager. Why are we always going for second best? We are LFC not west brom. If Alex Ferguson were to die of an overdose of viagra would the mancs go for managers like that, uh??? I`m sure they would have gone instead for a top class manager like mourinho or pep guardiola etc not a hodgson like we did or a martinez! Where has our pride of being 18 times champions of england and 5 times champions of europe gone? Our expectations have fallen so low. We now settle for mediocrity! We keep going for players and mangers who are average. Thats the kind of mentality that made us, a once proud club competing for titles now languishing in mid table. I`m dissapointed!

  26. media says AVB has been talking with liverpool. well i can definitely say that at 12pm today he had not been, my friend is a cypriot football agent and one of his associates is AVB's agent and he confirmed today that they have had no talks as of yet. that was at 12pm today, from then, not to sure but will find out tomorrow.

  27. Not a great example, Wenger was very successful before Arsenal, He won league in france with Monaco, finished runner up 3 times. Won French cup also, finished runner up in UEFA cup with Monaco. In his 1 season managing in the j-league he won 2 cups with Nagoya Grampus Eight. Won J-league manager of the year that season. Hardly low profile or in any way comparable to Martinez. No constant relegation battles.

  28. man im going nuts round here, just how the hell fsg is talking with martinez for God's sake, are they joking or what? do they wanna send us in the championship next season , or no wait martinez will save us, because he did it twice with wigan, omg i cant just believe what im hearing, do we really deserve this? chasing a manager who fights to avoid relegation every single year, just how sad is that, is that the standard lfc got down? man im just sitting here and thinking about CL games we used to play, so many great nights and now we're about to appoint martinez, for this we sacked kenny? sacking a legend and getting martinez, you telling me? ok i was one of those who wanted kenny out true, but when you sack a legend like kenny that means you must get then a better one not the worst possible ffs, i just dont know whats happening at this club, i just feel sorry for the fans, we dont deserve this for sure, been loyal all the time and now the yanks paying us in this way, this is unacceptable, disgrace, shocking, im telling you if martinez comes in im sure lots of current lfc players will leave including suarez, maybe i will do the same!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have supported lfc and travel from northern Ireland 5-6 times a year for the last 25 years and suported them through thick and thin and Im totally gutted that lfc are goin backwards in interviewing Martinez kenny got the club back on track after the last lot of clowns left the club in a bad way. And wee need to build on what the king has done but instead we r lookin at Martinez and goin backwards and I will not support this anymore !!!! We've fucked about long enough and like a lot of fans pissed off with the lack of leadership in the club we need to get a world class manager and stop turnin are club into a circus !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dont worry they will just start another poll to get rid of that manager and so on till we're more famous then chelsea for hiring and firing.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'd be reasonably happy, in that I could find genuine positives for many of them, for 8 of the top 10 that Jaimie's listed above to take over. I wouldn't fancy Capello or Redknapp.

I still don't know why Van Gaal isn't being considered.

    ReplyDelete
  32.  Right, what we do know is this; the next liverpool manager better had get the team into the top 4 next year otherwise there is going to be hell on especially if benitez does not get the job. there will be 2 clans, the benitez back clan and the dalglish should not of been sacked clan. The pressure on the new manager to succeed is going to be immense. Taking them two important factors in to consideration and the fact that surez has possibly started the exedous. do you honestly think that if martinez gets the job he will be able to cope with the costant pressure and be able to build a team that is capable of getting top 4 at least in his first season? If the answer is no, then we should not be getting him in as he will not get time.

The sacking of KD has truly opened the flood gates of emotion, fans are split but they are unanimous in the notion that the next manager if it is better had do alot better and at least get 4th spot!! who in their right mind would want that challenge, especially with players possibly leaving and not as much money as chelsea, man utd, city and arsenal as they will no doubt spend. Unless liverpool get a really top manager or benitez then i think we will be here next year. At least benitez will get at least half of the fans on side and he is familiar with the pressures of liverpool which will help him settle quickly and give him a little more time. Fo all the bad things that people said about KD at least he gave us stability. At present we are asking; are players going to stay? Is the new manager going to be world class or championship class? Are the owners going to invest?, will the next manager get time? In conclusion liverpool looks like mission impossible and we need a manager that can do the impossible and get this team into 4th spot! me thinks he should delay buying a house on merseyside and just book 6 months into a hotel and see how it goes!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes and the fact that they are speaking to him means that they were leaking stories before they sacked kenny,so much for lfc business being done in private.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A to the men Jamie!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Of course it does, you only have to look at Barcelona to prove that. We did play some great attacking football last season, quality of finishing did for us though.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Its all about money and contrary to what the media say they spent 23 million of their own money on players, and that is not a lot these days.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For everything in favour of Benitez you can write five things against him. All this has already appeared on the site a hundred times. We all know the position - half the fans worship him and the other half detest him. That means if he's appointed, the supporters - and very likely the players too- will be divided right down the middle. Haven't we had enough of that?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Possibly because fighting relegation is the future for LFC?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Like him or loathe him, rafa is the best suited, experienced and also prestigious manager available. He won't take lacklustre performances- give the players a luck up the backside. Will demand respect and effort. Also s great tactician. Will also be able to attract better calibre of players. Knows the club. Knows the expectations of it. With actual backing this time round, he is the man. We won't get Juergen klopp who would be the number one choice I'm sure. He is building a dynasty in Germany and would not be ready to leave that half done and resurrect us. Rafa has unfinished business at lfc. We got to second place and he wasn't backed in window and it went down hill. If he got backed for players like jovetic, dani alves when he was at Seville- who knows. Rafa has the highest win percentage of our managers also.

    ReplyDelete
  40. People like you worked hard to get rid of kenny now you ask other people to except rafa  hardly

    ReplyDelete
  41. We should be so lucky.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i said it a while back when everyone was kcalling for KD's head, be careful what you wish for. i said that the likes of agger, skrtel, suarez, renia will probably leave as they will have to listen to yet another manager talk about a 5 yr plan that he will never get to serve out unless he is world class. these players are in their prime and will no doubt look at a CL club and move on, if they do then the new manager has even a bigger challenge, build a new team and get 4th. even benitez could not manage that in his first yr in the prem. the champions league was easier to win!!! shocker!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I get what your saying re the fanbase and it is quite a popular view re the fanbase etc but i actually think our main problem since rafa's last season has been the players.......

and im not talking about Gerrard and Carra so much as Reina & Co...

    ReplyDelete
  44. does it matter or do you just want to hear rafa won the poll

    ReplyDelete
  45. No No No !We sack a manager who won a cup got to the final of the fa cup and finished 8th cause we didnt get top 4 to get a manager who finished 15th ??another Roy hodgson all over again,I thought the new owners were ambitious....what makes roberto martinez a winner?3 months and jamie will be calling for his head!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Everything about KD and what he brought to the club was right - even some of the football he got us playing.

But it tailed off and his signings were terrible. Low net spend, but he still had an opportunity with £120m to sign some quality... and he didn't really. Enrique, his only really inspired signing.
Definitely right for him to go although it saddens me. We need someone with the ability to sign decent players. FSG should concentrate on that. AVB, Martinez, Klopp, ...... all very good managers. With decent signings and a good plan for the future, we can really improve. Klopp probs the best but won't leave Dortmund. AVB will command authority and get a longer 'chance with fans' where Martinez might not.We need to back the manager with cash. I'd hate to go for Martinez because he'd come cheaper than the others. I feel he wouldn't demand much spending....Get in a manager with experience of winning things (like what AVB did with Porto - it was amazing), young so he can be given time (and give him time!) and back him with cash! They'll soon see the rewards. Make sure he has a good scouting team (raid Newcastle).

  47. I wonder now if being affable and pleasant wins you thropies. You are sure smart about turning your arguments and logic around to suit your short sightedness. I am not pro-Kenny or anyone for that matter and I think you need to write that down somewhere so you can recall anytime you need to. However, I am sick and tired of people who nag all their life about this and that like they were perfect in themselves. Look JK all I am saying in you can't keep complaining about every thing, grow up man. Let me ask you. If Martinez gets hired and with his so called "affable and pleasant" LFC gets relegated, would you take that just to have a pleasant manager? I am a bit confussed about your logic...you have spoken so much about results, performance ...bla bla bla and now you switch to "being affable and pleasant"? Is this now the standard for critiquing football?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Please always get your facts right. Arsene Wenger was at Monaco where he won the League and Cup before moving to Japan. You didnt have to omit that to butress your biased point I would like to know the state of your credibility as a football analyst when Martinez gets hired and then performs worse than Roy. I do not wish for that, but if it happens, I wonder what you would say then

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reina in his prime? Mr Blunder? You must be kidding.

  50. Jamie you must be wetting yourself at the thought of Martinez becoming our new manager you might get your wish you've wanted shot of Kenny hope your happy.

  51. Arsenal fan in peace.
Forgive me, I have a hand injury and am left with only my laptop for entertainment! I have spent most of the last week laughing at Spuds and wondering where Liverpool go from here...
I think Dalglish had to go. He was totally dedicated, but it wasnt enough. Its nice to see that the fans who wanted him out still have the utmost respect for him - thats refreshing, considering we are in the "success now!" age.
And thats part of the problem - you need to rebuild, and if you want to get back to the level you were at, its going to take time. And a young manager too. Martinez would not be my choice, I feel he should have taken a step to a Newcastle/Sunderland/Everton level to prepare for the pressure of a big job. But if he gets the job and it doesnt work out straight away, ignore the banter and the slagging, and get behind the manager. Real success needs time to build and it has to start somewhere.
Best of luck to you, heres hoping you break into the top 4 at the expense of one of the oil teams. Or Tottenham would do nicely too!

  52. if thats ur attitude and u are not willing to support what ever manger comes in u are not welcome to support liverpool good ridance

  53. I don't think Martinez has enough experience to manage Lfc. My choice would b Benitez. If not than AVB. The one thing I'm against Martinez is that would he b able to atract top players. I doubt it. Benitez and AVB would. Hope it's BENITEZ.

  54.  all i know is as a loyal liverpool fan who eva comes in i will support them 100% just like i did with kenny and every other liverpool manager

    ReplyDelete
  55. big day out at wembley or finish 4th with no satisfaction? wake up ... nt finishing in top 4 is the reason kenny was asked to go... it is not too much to ask of our fans to consider the motivations and business strategy of a sports group like FSG - they want CL year in and out ... it provides a return on investment as opposed to the "thrills" of a penalty shootout against a division one team

    ReplyDelete
  56. wow - talk about missing the point

    ReplyDelete
  57. well as long as the next manager doesnt break kenny's records for worst league run in 50 years, lowest goals tally, and worst home record then i guess we all have something to be cheerful about eh?

WRONG we run our club from the boardroom at ANFIELD.you never had the BALLS to do it here cos of the fans reaction and lets see how many times you gang of hillbillies turn next season at anfield. once a yank always a yank and i"ve had a belly full of you yanks. you will never be forgiven for the way u treated kenny no respect no class NO MORE YANKS !!

  62. This whole saga is going to pan out in one of 2 ways. Particularly if someone like Martinez takes over the managerial post:

    1. FSG are going to look like geniuses if LFC do make top 4 next season. They would have taken a guy who has a great character but absolutely minimal credentials to succeed at LFC, put him in post and made a success story of it all (a la Boston Red Sox).

    2. FSG are going to end up falling flat on their faces if there is not only no top 4 placing, but no trophies. Judging by what happened to Kenny, any new manager is going to have to be totally committed to the EPL, with cup competitions a distant secondary interest.

I feel with the spending power of Man City, the commitment of Man U to win back their title (they will also spend), and the threat of Arsenal and Spurs means that top 4 is going to be difficult to attain irrespective of  who is at the helm next term. The distraction of the EPL will make winning cups well nigh impossible. If the aims for next season and the criteria for keeping your job are the same as the one that just ended, then this time next year, we will be searching for a new manager.

FSG can help their cause by:
    a. Appointing a manager as soon as possible, allaying the fears of fans and players alike. He can then get to work in the transfer market
    b. Appointing someone who has been there and done it (even if young). The challenge of managing a club like Liverpool is big enough, but despite what Mr Ayre says, the club is in upheaval (at least until the vacancies created by the mass sacking are filled). I doubt the new manager will receive 100% support from the fanbase until he has proven himself. Liverpool will be stretched next term, fighting on 4 fronts. Will the new manager be able to handle all that and the pressure a poor run of form brings?
    c. Ensuring the new manager has adequate funds to buy new players
    d. Ensuring a good infrastructure so that the manager only has to concentrate on what happens on the pitch
    e. Reassurance that he won't lose his job at the first sign of trouble and that he won't be sacked even if top 4 isn't achieved, but progress has been made.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Its gonna be Alan Pardew.

    ReplyDelete
  64. 10th won't be a problem for him.. He's used to bottom three. On a serious note, no matter who comes in we have to support the appointment & forget what was before. It was going to be difficult even if KD had stayed so hopefully a new face can help to progress things.

    ReplyDelete
  65. How the hell do you know that? Oh knowledgable one! Sure we'll just appoint Rafa because you say so. Do wise up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. No-one's really talking about the mistakes FSG have made. I accept that Kenny's transfer dealings have not proven successful, but how is that different to FSG employing Comolli.

Comolli didn't have a great track record, his last employer, prior to joining LFC, Bernard Caiazzo, co-chairman at St. Etienne surmised: 'it was a mistake bringing him back to the club.' I'm not sure I can trust any of their appointments. (To be fair Hodgson was appointed during the Gillet & Hicks regime)

I have increasingly become wary of Mr Ayre. But I will reserve judgement whilst I see how matters progress.

If one was to do a poll of season ticket holders for Anfield regarding Kenny and compare to Talksport etc. you would see the descrepancies

  70. Have to say, I am not too thrilled about any of the name's on your list of ten. A big NO to Redknapp and Capello, Martinez and Roger's too inexperienced, will not be able to cope with the undoubted pressure that is going to come with taking over this position and AVB, look at the turmoil he got Chelsea into before he was fired!, all of these manager's would be looking for a new job again within 12 month's. FSG should have given this some forethought before they got rid of Kenny, ( although IMO they had made up their mind's a couple of month's ago ), even though they publicly backed Kenny only a few week's ago,now it look's like they have kicked themselves right in the ass because of their short- sighted ness.So who are you left with?, I am probably going to be slammed fo my pick for the next manager?, IAN HOLLOWAY currently at BLACKPOOL just think he would be the perfect fit, especially long term, watcha think?

    ReplyDelete
  71.  I really think that FSG has done a great job so far.
They didnt sack KD during season, they probably wanted KD to resign by himself.
They cleared the room before they sacked KD, now they will have a clean table to work with, where the new manager will have every chance of succeeding.
All is handled behind closed doors, not in media.
    They put results first.
They give the manager backing in the transfer window.

Now to the list of managers:

    Pep Guardiola     41
    A Villas Boas    35
    Mourinho    49
    Martinez    39
    Brendan Rodgers    39
    -------------------------------------
    Rafael Benitez    52
    Marcelo Bielsa    56
    -------------------------------------
    Gus Hiddink    66
    Fabio Capello    68

With these nine names we do have some hints on what could be.

First, FSG are known to want a young manager, that excludes one of my favorite managers; Hiddink along with Capello. Seven to go.
If you believe that 60 could be the line, then you have two more contenders, where Rafa is well known and Bielsa is less known by Liverpool fans. But that doesn't make Bielsa a lesser coach, Bielsa is known for total football, along with Guardiola. Total football is something that belongs to Liverpool's history, going back to Shankly days, where Bill, inspired by Ajax, brought total football to Liverpool.
That would appeal the fans and could well bring us back to the top.
The saying never go back would makes Bielsa the choice before Rafa, which may or may not be true. Another aspect with Rafa is that he could split the fan base and also the dressing room, which is something that we do not need.

Bielsas main candidate then? out of the remaining five, the two most successful is no doubt Guardiola and Mourinho, they are both well experienced at the highest level. With Mourinho we would bring some controversy back to the club, a way that is not the Liverpool way. Even though Mourinho probably would be the one most certain to give us league glory. The other fact that he probably will not leave Real at this moment pushes him further down the list of possible outcomes.
Martinez and Rodgers are the least experienced top flight managers, where I would prefer Rodgers because of Swanseas style of play, close to Bielsas and Guardiolas style.

This reasoning gives us the following list:
    Pep Guardiola
    Marcelo Bielsa
    Andrés Villas Boas
    Rodgers
    Martinez

    And unlikely:
    Mourinho (not Liverpool way)
    Benitez (never go back)
    Hiddink (age)
    Capello (age)

The hard task with Guardiola is to persuade him to come back to the game where he left for sabbatical, I believe he will not come. Bielsa will be considered to old. So people, if FSG can agree a deal, then we will have AVB as our next manager, otherwise we will see Brendan Rodgers.
Both will give us attractive football. So the future looks bright! :)

The only contender to that outcome is Mourinho.

    ReplyDelete
  72. carragher, his knowledge of the game is right up there.
    would be a natural progression.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Good work. To that I would add this: apparently the management structure will change. There will be:
    1. A coach
    2. A technical director (intermediate-term football strategy???)
    3. A director of football, whose role will be divided further into administrative, scouting and negotiating functions.

Complicated? It's the American way. Anyway, if this is true, this strongly suggests they won't employ a controlling manager - that rules Benitez out. It does point towards one of the less experienced and less successful managers, like Rodgers or Martinez. AVB may be a perfect fit, but it would depend on how willing he would be to accept a lack of complete autonomy.

  82. Kenny's departure was the right move but sad it did not work out with him. Have always liked Kenny as a person, a true gentleman and for his immense and unselfish contributions to the club. I think, with the owners, Kenny was just an interim manager.

Martinez would be a bad choice. Wigan has been fighting to stay in the EPL all season and not challenging any titles. And please, no Rafa as well. He had his time. It is crucial that FSG does a thorough evaluation and bring in the right man. We can't wait longer for Champs League actions and EPL title or our key players will leave and the club will not attract any good players to come here.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Your take on Kenny's off field's approach is not fair to the man. He has to back his players. Whether he did it rightly or wrongly does not matter. He has to be seen as a manager fully supporting his players.

The results were the key factor in his departure and clearly, the owners does not see an overturn of fortunes in the new season if Kenny were to be given more time. Regretfully, I tend to agree with this view.

  84. Where's Jurgen Klopp?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hmmm, I am far from shocked after the abysmal league season

Excellent article on why the decision on the next Liverpool manager is probably the most crucial in the club's history at: http://www.footballanalysis.org

For what it's worth, Martinez is not the right man

    ReplyDelete
  87. I am shocked at the fact that Martinez is linked with the job. I honestly don't see the sense in that. Is there any one that agrees with this. Its all hyped out and fuelled by the media. The media rules, because they put  a shining light on whoever they get along with. I hope the owners have a clear perception. Rafa is the man. He will no shirk from what has to be done, and he knows the stature of this club already. He will work out the strengths of Downing, Henderson and Carroll. I can also see him changing Suarez to a winger/ free role. He can make Liverpool into a force and unearth some talent that is hiding out there. Rafa the second coming.

    ReplyDelete
  88. FSG would be freaking crazy to appointed Robero Martinez. What are they looking for a relegation battle. That RM has on his CV. Get Rafa, AVB, Rikjaard or even Capello.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I think we are missing the point, the selection is based on the number of applications/show of interest, Whelan is 'overplaying' his manager's chances, Martinez will never takeover at LFC, he is just being interviewed just like anyone, then there will be a cull of mediocre applications followed by another interview. Then out of the remaining two to three, one will be selected, lets not play to the hand of the newspapers, who will bash us at any given time, LFC is not England where they decide who is the manager!  Things will be done behind closed doors, our way and soon we will be told who is taking over, forget Martinez, Rodgers, AVB, Pardew, Harry, Lambert, but the main contenders are Rafa, Emery, Capello, Klopp [though doubt he will leave his team now]. 3 relegation dogfights do not make a good CV.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Wrong choice JK, Wenger had been in the French national team setup, J league was being launched, how ever when has demeanor won anything, selection is based on the best possible CV.....Rafa, Klopp, Capello are beyond the pack, this myth about replacing KD with a low profile manager does not stick..what respect are Martinez, Rodgers, Lambert even AVB  going to get from our egotistic big players and us?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I rather think that FSG have had their fill of "appeasing the fans". Any decision they take will be for reasons other than that.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Unless the new manager cant get respect from the players and we finish with no silverware 7-8th in the league and top players decide they want out? That is something that could happen if they make the wrong appointment.

    ReplyDelete
  93. How can you detest a man that has given our club things that he has, you see this is the problem with our fans, now i don't know whether or not Rafa is the right man for the job but what i do know is he has given us some truly great memories, he has served our club the best way he thought possible, just like KK so to say something like that about someone who has given more to the club than you (even if you are a season ticket holder) is a disgrace.

    ReplyDelete
  94. No matter who we get there will always be those opposed, all we can do is all support whoever comes in for the club, now i personally would not want Lambert or Rodgers only because if we want anyone outside of the UK these managers don't have the pull to draw players in, and maybe not even Martinez.
Now they could get one of these three and i would have to support the club and manager because i too was one of the ones who thought that KK was out of his league.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I've had enough! I've little hair left as it is and all this bickering between fans is truly disturbing. I'm not saying everyone should be of the same opinion but with the media circus reaching fever pitch and every Tom, Dick & Harry suddenly being an expert of everything football related it's starting to add years to my life.
Whatever happens, one thing I know needs to be done; whomever FSG appoint as the next manager, we have to get behind them and reserve judgement for what happens on the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Jaimie I agree with everything you say there mate as usual

    ReplyDelete
  97. this job is going to become a poisoned chalice, with fickle fans not giving anyone a chance, Too many of you live in the past and in denial if you want to move on you need a young progressive manager but if you want Rafa the club will continue in decline.
Also Liverpool is not an attractive proposition anymore and Pep Guardiola is not going to come or anyone like him.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Fans from other clubs must be laughing their socks off at all these coments. I am sure if you leave you wont be missed because diehards never leave. 102. When we talk football, few people would make sense with their talk but when we politicize the game, many people would make sense with their talk.I thought the likes of Carragher,Gerrard,Kuyt,Agger,Reina and lately Skirtl have full respect for Rafael Benitez, they respect his judgement and philosophy, the man's game is dynamic and unpredictable unlike dalglish's routine staff.Rafa would not pick the likes of henderson, carroll and spearing ahead of Kuyt,Maxi and Lucas for no reason like dalglish but he would give them Chance for their own growth;something that cost Dalglish results.Maxi tried to show the man that he could score a goal every two games but that wasn't appealing according to dalglish.Kuyt started to miss penalties under the man(Dalglish),Bellamy is the reason why we won the carling cup but he got less votes from dalglish and the likes of carrol and henderson had no significant impact in the cup yet they were always there, atleast downing was man of the match in final.Dalglish's team selection was based on love for certain people, but am glad Ian Ayre and Tom Wener viewed things the way I viewed them and the likes of Maxi,Kuyt,Bellamy,Shelvey,Suarez and Gerrard would hopefully be picked together for several times in one game and people would realise how dangerous this attack is.These players can play one touch football supported by Lucas, they don't get confused when they get the ball like Hendersons, ooouh! my God!

I agree with you 100% Jamie K. A manager who believes Downing & Henderson are better than Meireles, Benayoun (sold), Aquilani (loaned out), Dirk Kuyt & Maxi (always benched) deserves to be kicked out. KD's transfer activity is the worst ever.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Using your theory of how a manager should manage Alex Ferguson would never have become the most successful manager in English football, and should not be revered by all who follow Manchester United. He has become known for his attitude, arrogance, bullying etc.of the press and all who differ in opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  106. great analise man ,

  107. i seem to remember kenny being praised at the end of last season for his witty banter. pressure changes people. did you see woy smile much at liverpool. you got what you wanted kenny is gone. we need a big manager cos our pathetic players wont play for second rate manager (woy) and they cant even do it for a legend. really people we need someone whos gonna kick all these pretenders into shape. maxi and kuyt should play every home game. carra should be assistant boss and gerrard should be the big man for the small occasion like games against swansea norwich and qpr.

    ReplyDelete
  108. sounds like a civil war here, the anti Rafa and the pro Rafa camps
Too many people are putting emotion first with Kenny, you cant sack a legend mentality is ridiculous.

  109. they also picked the new Boston Red Sox manager and they are bottom of the league now

    ReplyDelete
  110. your right kenny treated the press the same way fergie does the problem is they only accept it from fergie. its a joke the whole suarez thing fergie loved it. the way kenny handled it the players will love him for that its just  a pity they couldnt score to save their lives. downing, adam and spearing should be sold as an example for others to do better.

    ReplyDelete
  111. i would love RAFA back to liverpool!!! we all know dat he left the club cuz of the disagreement with the owners and i hope he will be the one.
but one thing i would like to say is that ian AYRE was a problem for him that time and he will be the obstacle for him to come back.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Well, I really hope that no one is thinking of appointing Capello.

Martinez has more recent experience than Kenny did when he took the job and I think that he has proven himself a better manager during the season. He has an eye for young players, he got Wigan, and Swansea, playing good football and, probably attractive to the owners, he has an eye for a bargain. I'd still take AVB before him, though, and still think O'Neill is the only manager who has the mental strength and the experience and the skill to guarantee success.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I agree, let Martinez go to Sunderland and we'll take O'Neill off them.

Hope you guys manage to keep RVP, by the way. Although if any team has proved that no one is impossible to replace, it is Arsenal.

  115. Well, lets see if the club finish higher than 8th in the next couple of seasons.

Considering how bad we've been, no one in our squad is irreplaceable. Did you read some of the records we broke this season? If this is what these players, in their prime, are happy with, then let them go. If they want to do better, and don't want to take the blame, then they must be happy that we have another manager coming in. Do you think that they enjoyed being 8th in the table? I'm sure that some of them will say the right things about believing in what the management were doing, but results suggested otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Top 4? Why? We were 8th a displaying relegation form! Top 5 or 6 will do next year. 4th the year after that. Buying players who look like they were worth the money would be a good start also.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Interesting angle there, I'll look into it as well! And I agree that that kind of management structure would rule out Benitez, who wants total control.

    ReplyDelete
  118.  Exactly what I wrote. :)

    ReplyDelete
  119. I have a lot of respect for what Alan Pardew has achieved at Newcastle and for the way his teams are set out to play. At the same time, IMO he is nowhere near as good a manager as Benitez, Capello and Mourinho. Perhaps Liverpool fans recall the way Pardew had no idea where or how to play Javier Mascherano, until Rafa took him off West Ham's hands on loan and revealed the Monster in Mascherano - forming probably the best midfield in Europe at the time (Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard).

    ReplyDelete
  120. Bielsa is a fantastic manager, his teams are a joy to watch, however (unlike Mourinho, Benitez and Capello) there is no guarantee of success. Bielsa is almost too much of an innovative genius to fit the bill of a manager who has to get Liverpool into the top-4. We need a great but also pragmatic tactician like Mourinho and Benitez to bring Liverpool back to the top at short notice - and the advantage of Benitez (in addition to availability) is that he has also shown at Liverpool that he also has a long-term vision for the club. This may or may not be the case for Mourinho, who either did not have the opportunity or the patience to stay at a club long enough to build for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  121. so true in terms of what position we should be in, its a process that will get us back in the top four and obviously the owners were not prepared to give KD the time he needed to complete the team to fight for honours once again. My take is that KD would have taken us into the top four next year. What the negative supporters dont realize is that KD brought a new dimention team spirit back to the club, with the exeption of 1 or 2 who complained about not getting enough game time, but that was sorted out. Its all about rebuilding now and we were going in the right direction despite our league position that have reasons as to why we were underachieving which would have corrected itself next year. ReplyDelete
  123. Hey why can't we have AVB as manager and Rafa as footballing Director, do you think that will work Jamie or are the ego,s too big?

    ReplyDelete
  124. During Rafa's reign Liverpool is no. 1 team in Europe....Rafa was just a victim of the management tussle....2 CL finals, 1 CL semi-final and 2 CL quarter-final....Rafa can also attract players like Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Reina....these are not those relegation battle managers who can achieve...wake up!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  125. During Rafa's reign, Liverpool was no. 1 team in Europe and all the top Europe clubs respected Liverpool, anyone not agree?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Simple question, after the 2007/2008 season, if Rafa were given 50 mil to strengthen his squad (Most probably he could have added Silva and Aquero to the team) Liverpool would very likely have won the title in 2008/2009. Do you know that 30 mil per year was in fact used to serve loan interest by the two American clowns from 2007 to 2010?

    ReplyDelete
  127. All I know is they better get on with it.....2 wks to window, Guardiola is good 1 and maybe Joachim Loew thrown in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I am going for rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Kenny so so nearly had the team right so as long as we get a proven goalscorer and some creativity in mid with some ammunition on the right and the left the new manager should have an easy job if he doesn't tinker with what Kenny started. Ha Ha ha sounds so easy .......!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I truly must say that I haven't read too much about the German league, I actually don't seem to have the time :)
But I did my homework a bit hasty now and I must say that Klopp really looks like a top flight manager with amazing results.
He also seem to have survived as manager in a club with history of sacking managers for fun. He also fits the bill as a young manager.
I have never seen Meinz 05 or Dortmund (my fault) so I cant tell about his football and I really want us to play total football, but with almost 2 goals/game it looks good.
Anyway, I think its thrilling with a new manager :)

  131. Roy Hodgson was 'an affable, pleasant manager' and look where he got us

    ReplyDelete
  132. 'the worst ever'..hm, Poulsen, Konscheky, Cole, ..Julian Dicks, Paul Stewart, Voronin, Degen..I could go on a long time. Every manager has good & bad  buys. And Benayoun went before Hodgson took over while Meireles engineered a move to Chelsea. Was Suarez also a bad buy? Enrique? Not very fair to cherrypick

    ReplyDelete
  133. We already got that when the same so-called "fan" called for Rafa's head and who did we get? Roy Hodgson. That wasn't a step back, that was about 10 steps back.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I don't even think it was not finishing in the top 4 that was the reason Kenny was asked to go, but more that they finished so far back from the other sides, if they finished 8th but were only a couple of points out of the top 4,  I think it would have been a different outcome, the fact that there was such a huge gap in points between us and Chelsea, that was the killer blow

    ReplyDelete
  135. Benayoun was sold by Hodgson and bought by Meireles, Meireles left because he wanted to be reunited with AVB. Downing was excellent for Aston Villa in his second season and Henderson was played out of position, but has a lot of potential. Dirk Kuyt and Maxi not being used anywhere near as much is a mystery to me, much like Houllier never using Jari Litmanen, yes, Litmanen was a Liverpool player and could have been a legend for the club, whenever he did make an appearance, he made things happen, much like Maxi has a knack of doing.

    ReplyDelete
  136. To be fair, Voronin and Degen were Bosmans, and although Degen is a dud, Voronin is anything but a dud. Would you also class Fernando Morientes as a dud too even though he is considered a legend at Real Madrid and was part of the front two in arguably Real Madrid's most successful spell?

    ReplyDelete
  137. I said i want Rafa, learn how to read. Rafa has proven to be a good manager, so STFU.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Frankly we have to wait for EPL title, we have to build a squad capable of finishing 3rd or 4th on a consistent basis, then we can build up higher. Whether people like Rafa or not and I am one of those who do like him, he punched above his weight with the purse strings he had during his reign. Guillem Balague once said during the reign of Rafa that Liverpool should have realistically been 6th or 7th in the league with the amount H&G invested into the club. The fact that we performed on the whole so highly, almost winning the league, scoring more goals than anyone in the country, is testament to Rafa and if he is appointed as the new manager, this will be a key factor for him being appointed, that and his youth philosophy, which ties in perfectly with FSG's philosophy.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Had we have had a 20+ goalscorer, then all these people saying how bad Downing was and that he didn't have any assists would have quickly changed their tune. We needed the goalscorers, I don't care if we don't have a 20+ goalscorer, as long as we have 3 or 4 10+ goalscorers

    ReplyDelete
  140. Funny, I thought he said Harry Readknap, who is a young manager. Unlike the Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp

    ReplyDelete
  141. Settle gretel, he is a candidate, which means he is going to be interviewed, as are a few possible candidates, who have said that Martinez is a favourite to get the job, Liverpool Football Club certainly haven't. I think Martinez would be better suited to the assistant manager role under Rafa. My personal preference, which would be hugely beneficial for Martinez and possibly groom him for a future managerial position for us.

    ReplyDelete
  142. That is a bit discriminatory, not all Liverpool fans are season ticket holders. I for one am a lifelong Liverpool supporter, even have the crest tattooed on my chest, but I am an Australian living in Australia, therefore it is logistically impossible for me to be a season ticket holder. That makes me no less of a fan than anyone else and I consider myself to be quite a knowledgeable and objective fan at that. One name I haven't seen is Diego Simeone. Former top class player, he is young and is the manager of Atletico Madrid who have just won the Europa League, not to mention finishing 5th in the league, which is pretty good considering they sold their two biggest stars in David de Gea and Sergio Aguero.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I think you will find that top players no longer want to come to LFC, no matter who the manager is. So we will just have to get on with it..  And I am fully awake.. you?

    ReplyDelete
  144. Rafa takes it hands down, he is good and we may begin to see Andy picking up to the level of Torres

    ReplyDelete
  145. I am fully aware of what you said & I can read. I questioned your assessment of Martinez being an automatic failure at Liverpool & we can all see that you want Rafa. Maybe you should have read my reply before you made an idiot out of yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  146. He seems classy in his interviews. Granted! And plays good football, however, would you have chosen him in march? Even his boss said,"no one is bigger than the club," back than. Flavour of the month? Tottally unproven so far. One day when he achieves something, welcome. For now, caution. Be careful what you wish for. Look at Owen Coyle. Pleasant, some good football in the first season but relegated now. I think we need proven managers. Descamps ? Have a look at the French league table.
One thing is clear. Kenny was never up to the job. I commented last year that it was the best time for kenny to go. Everyone called me an idiot.... Yet, it was the best time to leave.

Experience please, Fabio if he can work for 4 years, or Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Gaz, forget the top 4. If we played with a group of young players with promise to become world class ... And finished 8'th, narrowly missing on top 4, you could see progress. With Carrol, Henderson , downing and Adam, spearing, which one gas the potential to become a top 4 player? Where do you see the improvement? We went backwards. Out of the CL places (running ) in march. That is simply not acceptable

    ReplyDelete
  148. On fans views of preferring Carling Cup win vs finishing fourth : we keep ignoring the simple fact that to stand a chance to win a CL competition -you have to qualify for it first .
Everyone competes in Carling FA cup while  in EPL and CL you have to qualify - the EPL by obviously staying in the division.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Why hasn't anyone mentioned Ralf Rangnick

    ReplyDelete
  150. For Benitez, I must say that he did wonder with nothing and the two clowns. He is a tactician who I only saw beaten (tactically) once; by Hiddink.
And Benitez with the backing that KD got would surly have contended with City for league glory!

The things I personally had against Benitez, was that he never made a substitute before match minute 60 (unless forced). He was very stubborn, even when he was at fault. And he sometimes seemed to missmanage some players - maybe ruined some players carrier. He didn't have good man management, well documented. He played safe against lesser teams, that could drive me crazy.

The results under Benitez was very good, with the backing he got from the clowns, he over delivered.

For Mourinho, in short; He will not come. Unless FSG are very VERY skilled negotiators. Even though his personality is mixed, I would welcome him.

Actually; I do trust FSG on getting this right. They have more in stake than you and me. We will love the team even if we would be relegated, but for FSG that would be a massive blow.

FSG has shown to be very very competent in handling things. Actually, so far they are everything that I expect from an owner! Even though I hope they resolve the Stadium issue sooner rather than later.

  151. Jaimie, be careful what you wish for ... it's people like you who clamoured for Kenny's head who'll get what you deserve.
I guarantee next season will witness less attractive football.  With Kenny we largely played a brand that hadn't been seen here for 20 years, with the exception of one half of one season when we should have won the league with Rafa in 2008.

Kenny absolutely deserved a second and third season - no question that he was unlucky with results.  A tweak to make us better finishers with a better winning mentality and that's a 20-point improvement.

Personally I think you're a shocking example of a new breed of Liverpool supporter.  Whatever you represent, it certainly is not the Liverpool Way.  Alas, the same goes for our owners, and although they're better than Hicks and Gillett, quite frankly I still don't think they have a clue what they're doing with this football club.  The appointment of Commolli on the recommendation of Billy Beane tells you all you need to know.

Doubtless you'll say 8th isn't good enough.  Correct, it isn't.  However, you have to look at little bit beyond that.  The entire playing structure was being overhauled, with players learning to pass and move, not hoof. The fact that our style was generally pretty good (every team has off-days about 25% of the time) is a testament to what Kenny instilled in very short order.  To get results as well would have been genius.

Furthermore, it is the NET spend that counts.  And our NET spend with Kenny wasn't much at £23m or so in the books.  I'm not defending his buys, but it's worth noting that many "new breed" LFC fans slated Lucas in his first couple of seasons as a young lad.  Now he's our linchpin.

Sometimes it's right to fire someone quickly (Hodgson).  But in Kenny's case it is absolutely the wrong decision, and one based on complete ignorance.  Results were poor, but the quality of the play was rather good, and a few rubs of the green would have seen plenty more points on the board.

Frankly, I'm not impressed with FSG, though I am grateful to them for ousting H&G (whom Jaimie, you actually defended from time to time), and ousting Hodgson too.  But it seems they are a bit fast and loose with the P45s, and yet a little slow to look at their own decision-making.

  153. Season ticket holders see every match live, TV coverage just isn't the same

If the owners really knew football and were at every home game they would know that Kenny should have gotten another season

  158. Most Liverpool fans I think would prefer Mourinho or Guardiola to be appointed manager of Liverpool now but it seems neither is available. If that is so I believe the club should try to bring in Michael Laudrup as a young, well respected manager who would be able to attract top players to remain with and also new ones to join the Reds.

Rafa is loved by most Reds fans but I feel it would be wrong to return to methods that failed to land the League Championship.

If it is necessary to employ a British manager I would place Moyes, Pardew and Lambert in that order as a matter of preference.

However, I believe the Reds Board will get it right. As Ian Ayre has said they simply must.
