Insult to Injury: After the FA Cup defeat, more bad news for Liverpool FC...

After FA Cup heartbreak against Chelsea yesterday, things have gone from bad to worse for Liverpool today, with Fulham's victory against Sunderland pushing the Reds into 9th place in the Premier League.

Reputed Liverpool target Clint Dempsey was on the scoresheet again for Fulham again today, which makes it 30 goals and assists for the American this season.

Liverpool currently have 49 points, which means the maximum points total achievable is 55. Gerard Houllier's team finished on 54 points in the 1998-99 season, but apart from that, it has been decades since a Liverpool side finished with a lower points total.

Hopefully, the club can win its last two games against Chelsea and Swansea to end the season on a positive note, but it's going to be a tough. The players will be demotivated after the FA Cup final defeat, and there's nothing else to play for in the league.

Chelsea, however, are still gunning for 4th place, and Swansea will be trying to finish as high up the league as they can, and they'll want to end the season with a home win for their fans. After yesterday's defeat, Steven Gerrard said:

"We're Liverpool Football Club; we're not seventh or eighth in the league. We're better than that"

The club *should* be better than that but the table does not lie: after spending 144m on transfers over the last 18 months, Liverpool are 9th, and it's depressing to admit it, but the club deserves to be there.

  1. No one is 'owed' anything.. The owners will see this as a business venture they want to be performing well. So my guess is they will make the necessary changes.

  5. That is the sort of statement I expect from an idiot.. some people may not be able to get to Anfield for whatever reason. Typical of some scousers who have an attitude towards 'out of towners'. Doesn't make you any less a supporter.

  11. We cant win anything
with players who hide, who are afraid to step up and be found out. To top it off, these overpriced players play without conviction and
belief. Just imagine we once had Alonso and Mascherano and now we are
left with Downing, Henderson and Spearing, says it all.

  12. Come on guys the last season that rafa was there we were almost in to administration. imagine the players motivation on and off the field. under Rafa we were improving .... Daglish needs some time more and some luck I think everybody saw the season how it went 30 and counting.... missed chances uncountable..... we need some more chemistry and two or three world class players   and we will be there again

  13. It would be good to finish the season with wins but it looks highly unlikely. So, it really does not matter if we are 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th. We performed badly this season. Period. End of story.  But what is more  important is how do the owners address the issues and take steps to move forward this summer to get back into Champions League contention again.

  14. Hello all,

I'm a Chelsea fan. From any outside club looking in, it looks like Dalglish is not the man for the job. He is not forward thinking enough and has basically got a very average bunch of players under him. No one fears Stevie G anymore and Andy Carroll is a joke, no matter how many consolations he scores. Fact: You have not played well during this campaign. But please don't delude yourselves into thinking that you have been "unlucky" because of how many times you hit the wood work this season. Hitting the wood work is a mistake, or lack of skill, composure or technique or many other things before it is "unlucky" Even though Kenny is a legend, it may only be in the eyes of you the fans. It doesn't look like the LFC players have too much respect for him, judging by their performances on the pitch.
All the best for next season, get a new manager.

  15. I mean no disrespect to anyone, i hear a lot of you guys say that we owe it to KK to give him another season, fair enough thats your opinion and your entitled to it. Just let me say this KK has had it all right Premier League success, FA cup etc... as a player and a manager.
What you are all forgetting is that this is not about KK this is about LFC and if you want to say we owe it to him, well lets not forget about Stevie G who has giving everything to LFC, he had a chance to go but he chose to stay and be loyal.
Do we not owe him or Carra for what they have done, i am pretty sure without ever playing in the EPL that when they retire they will regret that elusive Champions medal, so before you guys think about KK and we owe him i would look at someone who could possible be the greatest LFC player ever (Gerrard) and say what about him.
We will get good players at Anfield with the right manager in charge because players still do play for the manager, KK has made it too easy for his new signings they never earn't their spot in the team and he left out players that had, so that to me is bad management and this being the final year before the FA bring in the fair play rule, wouldn't you think that maybe this would have been the year to spend on world class foreign talent while we had the funds, now i'm not saying fill the team with foreign talent but we could have got the midfield sorted and a real striker to help Suarez, but Carroll has improved so i could be forced to eat my words later, anyway thats just my opinion (i could be wrong).

  16. Spot on. Happy to see Liverpool turn into West Brom.

  17. Birmingham are going to have to play another season in the championship as well. Europa League football takes its toll. So, unless we use the squad differently next year, it will be a harder season, not easier. Everything was in our favour this season.
