Manager hails 'incredible '£15m LFC striker target. Is he really that good...?

Wigan striker Victor Moses could be on the move this summer, and according to his manager, Roberto Martinez, the Nigerian has the talent to go 'as high as he wants'. Liverpool have been persistently linked with 21-year old over the last year, but is he the right player for the club, and can he consistently deliver the goals so desperately needed at Anfield?

In his press conference on Thursday, Martinez - who is also linked with a move away from Wigan at the end of the season - was full of praise for Moses, who scored two goals in the Latics' 4-0 rout of Newcastle last week. He raved:

"Sometimes we forget that he’s only 21. The potential is incredible. From technical and tactical aspects he’s improved a lot. His potential is so huge, he can go as high as he wants to."

Moses' Agent, Tony Finnigan, is working overtime at the momennt to build positive publicity for £15m-rated Moses, and in a recent interview, he made some bold claims about the interest in his client:

"Victor Moses has played himself into a position where virtually every club in the Premier League want to sign him. All of the Premier League clubs will be strengthening in the summer and we are not surprised that Moses has been linked with virtually every team in the top division"

Talk about overselling (!) - I sincerely doubt the likes of Man United, Man City and Arsenal will be in for Moses over the summer, and in my view, Liverpool should also look elsewhere, for the following reasons:

* End product: Moses does not score enough goals. This seaosn, he has 6 goals in 37 appearances (34 starts); last season, it was 2 goals in 26 appearances (11 starts). Even Andy Carroll has a better goalscoring record (!)

* Overall, Moses has 9 goals in 77 appearances for Wigan (1 goal every 8 games), which is not encouraging.

Liverpool need proven goalscorers, and Moses definitely is not that. The club already has enough non-goalscoring passengers; no need for any more.

  9. Jaimie yet again I disagree with your comments.

He's 21, talented - with pace and is NOT AFRAID TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY...something some of our younger players have been guilty of this season.

He is playing in a relegation threatened team and since the turn of the year has been their star performer...it could be argued that his return to form has been directly responsible for the increase in his teams form?

I have stated on other threads, Moses possesses the attributes to be a top player....and he would inject some pace and unpredictability down our left; the latter, in particular, is something we have not had this season.

Can I also point out that up until this thread, he had been priced at around £10m....unless you have read £15m on another specualtive piece of journalism in the last 24hrs?.....or perhaps you have increased it to £15m in order to drum up some support for your comments?

If we can't attract Munain then Moses would be a welcome alternative.

  10. Constantly you idiots write rubbish about possible links and always somebody manages to throw in a dig about KK or 1 of his signings. if anything yesterday should have proved that when we are free to play with players bought played in there natural positions we,re a match for anyone. Andy Carroll looked a 35 million pound striker, Downing and Henderson looked different players when played in a flat 4 midfield instead of trying to cover spearings lack of quality. Which fair enough was a mistake on King Kenny,s part but you can see his logic when he picked that team. Theres so much potential in this team and with a couple of new signings and a couple of the youngsters blooded it has the chance to challenge at the highest level for many years to come. You have to remember the state we were in when was KK called back off his holidays. When anything is knocked down and rebuilt to last you firstly lay the foundations then build steadily taking your TIME. Look at the time and money Man City have spent and get real.

  11. The most important signing Liverpool Fc needs to do is new mngr. preferably Benitez. And than take from there. For me the only British player I hope we sign isA Johnson. Otherwise no more British players please

  12. Buying a 21 year old reduces transfer fees by half over ten years . But Fenway aren't showing they have the patience to let the plays grow at the right pace . If you buy at 21 you save from buying at 28 and a proven success but for some reason people expect the hendersons lucus coates shelves Carrolls we do buy to be in the first team competing with the worlds best when they are still young and learning and only subs for Thier old teams . If you buy potentail you need to protect it and nature it not make it play against the top clubs and be destroyed by the fans.

  15. With the old man as manager, I don't see Liverpool building a better squad. This is a manager who can't keep consistent form if it saved his life. And to go and try to waste 10mil on Victor Moses is outright idiotic. Once again proves that the Scot has no clue what he's doing. Dalglish seems to forget there are other leagues to buy from other than just England, and no offense, but finding a great British player who's able to keep up with a big club his harder to find these days than Liverpool's old form. We need help, and it starts by sending Dalglish out the door. YNWA!!!!!

Technically he is nowhere near good enough.  If we were looking for young English talent then maybe outbidding Arsenal for Chamberlain would have been a better option.  Raheem Sterlin has much more potential than Moses and yet I fear Sterlin will also not be good enough.

Sterlin like Moses is very predictable.  When teams learn how to nullify their pace like they have with Bale and Lennon I seriously doubt they have a plan B or are intelligent enough to develop one.

The future is wide technical playmakers who have the ability to go on the outside if needed, but are just as comfortable sliding passes through the middle and unleashing powerful shots with either foot.

There aren't too many of this type of player about but DAMN IT! that's what scouts are for!!  GET LOOKING!!

Next manager for Liverpool will be Jamie carragher ! He's in the throws of doing his badges as we speak ! Fsg like young managers which means that for now, kk will remain in charge ! We all called for him ! We all wanted him as manager so get a grip and get used to it ! Rafas not the answer, he'll rip everything up and start again! We,re almost there as a team, just a couple more signings and we can challenge! YNWA a true red

We have a great squad, but because the prices of some of our players are so high we expect so much from them. They're young and we must be patient. (Expectinng more from downing tho) Reina and our back line are brilliant, our mf is new so we're still gelling together, and our strikers need to be more consistant, but I still lovve them ha carroll is looking better and better. These players are our future, we can't judge them on one season. Nobody is gonna fuck with us in the coming years. YNWA

Why would I comment on a player without seeing him play?  ...and more to the point HOW?

Have you ever seen Lennon play for England? noticed how pennant only has one weapon which is using his pace on the outside....seen how bale has purple patches in the season and then vanishes in other parts.  That's because he started of as a left back.  He is designed to go pretty much on the outside only as he only has one foot, same with Lennon, Pennant, Downing, Etherington,

If a player has one foot, you double up and show him inside.  He will soon develop a nose bleed which will result in the move breaking down.....watch much football?

  30. Dempsey is top class i like him alot tho hes not young maybe get 3 years oyt of him. pepe reina is the most over rated keeper in the league beat at his near post again terrible. vorm and krul both are way better

  32. I hope this is just pure speculation! And dempsey too...... We need the quality now. Gerrard plays where dempsey would play. We need quality wingers, a quality central midfield player and a finisher up front to give Carroll time to grow into his position with experience. Lets not forget he only played around 11 games for newcastle in the premier league before we bought him. He needs time and confidence. He was our best player on Sat - easy.
Don't buy Moses!!!!!!!. Get Raheem Sterling more minutes instead. That clears that up! Downing has been poor poor poor. 27 years old, vast experience in the premier league and he has been THAT poor this season. What about Adam Johnson? what a waste of talent on the bench at city. he would walk into our team right now.
We need Javi Martinez. If anyone watched La Liga they will appreciate the lad is immense in midfield. We need creative players with an end product. If we can get a marquee signing like martinez and maybe players like Granero (Real Madrid), Ramirez(Bologna),  Christian Eriksen(Ajax), Vargas (Fiorentina), Luuk de jong (FC Twente), Adam Johnson - our team would surely be far better. If gerrard knew he had a quality partner in midfield then he would be more confident to get forward at support attacks on more occasions.

                     Reina
    G.Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
             Martinez Gerrard
    A. Johnson Eriksen  Suarez/Ramirez
               Carroll/Suarez
(in comparison to our current team)...
                    Reina
    G.Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
             Spearing Gerrard
    Henderson                  Downing
                Suarez Carroll
For me Spearing, Henderson and Downing need competition to keep them on their toes so they know they can't be so inconsistent. Okay Spearing has been very consistent and has deserved his starting place, so that doesn't apply to him, but we can get better. I'd rather keep him than Charlie Adam.
I don't think Granero, Vargas, De Jong, Eriksen and Ramirez are unrealistic targets of quality. Martinez would be a very hard one to get but not unattainable. Adam Johnson maybe hard too cos Man City are rivals - distant ones this season!

  33. Moses is one of the most unpredicatble players in the prem....remember the drag back & turn against arsenal.....and tearing Newcastle to shreds recently.

As for nullifying Bale...well....he goes on the outside or comes inside and if he needs to switch sides to be effective he does so...doubling up on him exposes the team elsewhere. Basically, he's one of the toughest players to play against in the prem.....to say he gets nose bleeds is another laughable comment....

As for Lennon...well, he's not as effective as Bale but has been a consistent threat...switches with Bale (to good effect) with pace skill and trickery...

As for his England career...he's made a number of substitues appearances but hasn't started too many. Hard to judge him really, considering he hasn't had a decent run in the team and is still relatively young in international terms...I do recall him having a blinder against Croatia and being man of the match...not as good as Walcott on his day though...suppose you're gonna say he's gash too?

Stick to football manager on yer laptop......

  34. Circumstances forced Kenny's hand...NOT Fenway.

Gerrard & Lucas (and latterly Adam) injuries meant Henderson, Spearing & Shelvey got far more game time than Kenny would have intended.

Carroll had been playing first team football for at least two years, and spent 6 months dominating centre backs in the prem before he joined us - Vidic & Vermaelen included.

Coates has been used sparingly, as injury cover, so not sure why you're bringing him into the equation.

Finally....Kenny has had opportunity to blood other youngsters in the last few games leading up to the final, but there's an argument to say the only reason he hasn't is because we're desperate to finish above the blue noses...Not doing so (finishing above the blue sh*te) would only bring him further criticism from impatient and unrealistic so called fans...!!!

I'd rather see Suso and Sterling play the last couple of games to see how they get on....Stering in particular looks like he could be really special.

Be patient....and judge the new boys (and Kenny) on next season...we can't be as unlucky as we have this season!

    YNWA....!!

  36. Thierry Henry wasnt a natural goalscorer before he joined arsenal but look what happened, instead of always looking at stats which apparently was the reason we went for the likes of henderson and adam, maybe just look at the ability of the player, strong quick and has ability to go passed players!! Ive not watched enough to say we should be interested but there are more aspects to look into Jaimie, hes 21 and not the finished article, he plays in a struggling side although since the change in formation for wigan they have been fantastic and from what ive seen moses is one of the reasons why. Like i say though not seen enough to really pass judgement but i for one would not pay too much attention to the stats regarding moses!!

Tottenham had their worst spell of the season when Harry decided he wanted to play Bale on the right with Lennon on the left.  The Spurs fans were furious with Redknapp and were all over the phone-ins demanding Harry play them in their proper positions. There was blood all over the pitch from their respective drip, drip, dripping of blood from the nasal area.

But, I'm not here to convince you the way I see things is right....My ego is at rest in most debates.  IF you think Bale, Lennon, Walcott and Moses are fantastic...that's great.  My preference of player in wide areas is heavily technical like Barnes, Waddle, Ronaldo, Silva, Matta, Sanchez, Nani, L Garcia, Benayoun.  Individuals who can pop up in both wide positions and of the striker and not look out of place.  The way they strike/ control and manipulate the ball is with mastery.

I can see the good points in Bale, Lennon and Walcott but they wouldn't be my choice.

Scot Sinclair is cheaper and is about the same level...If you look to Europe, Dries Mertens is having a fantastic season.Marvin Martin is looking to moveYounes Behannada is available but might not want to leave FranceBasically I'm saying there are good affordable players our there... we just need to be smart about our scouting.
As well as Dempsey has done, where would he fit in our 442,451 setups?

We need to start both Carroll and Suarez as often as possible.

Personally we need 4 starting players and 1 good CAM option to cover SG8:

    LW - Gaston Ramirez 10m
    RW - Junior Hoilett  Free
CAM - Clint Dempsey 8m Last year of contract
    CDM - Moussa Sissoko 12m
ST - Klaas Jan Huntelaar 15m Buyout clause

    My 2cents...

Javi is probably moving o Real, with Khedira moving to Bayern

  44. I do remember John.  And out league form is just in about the same state when he came in - except Hodgson had way less money to spend under Hicks & Gillet than Dalglish did under Henry & Co.  If Dalgish was any other manager in the world we would be baying for his removal.  No man is bigger than the club - that included KD.

    ReplyDelete
  47. idk if he's good enough for pool but your reasoning is awful, 1) he plays winger not striker so obvi he's going to score less goals than carroll 2) he has lots of sub appearances so goals per game is a really poor metric to use, try goals/90 minutes maybe and 3) and most importantly look at what happened to Valencia's goal scoring when he left Wigan and joined a top club... yeah that's what I thought. Ps he is 200,000 times better than that scrub Carroll just sayin

  48. Moses is one of the most successful dribblers in England (on a par with Suarez and behind only Hoillett) so I'd have to disagree with the argument about his being 'predictable' and easily nullified.

Funnily enough, Babel is one of the most successful dribblers right across Europe, but whatever...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reina has been in decline for at least the last couple of seasons...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Exactly - a 21 year old in a poor team that is still managing to shine individually is pretty impressive (that's the same reason I argued that we should've picked up Hoilett in January when we had the chance).

There is no way that Moses will cost anywhere close to £15m with his contract situation anyway. The only problem is that Dalglish has wasted so much money over the last 18 months that there is little room for error, and taking risks with any more players that may not be ready to consistently deliver an elite level for a couple of years yet

    ReplyDelete
  51. I totally agree with you Chris - technical and physical ability are all that I'm concerned about when attempting to evaluate a player, and I don't see how else people manage to talk about a player's 'potential'.

Moses obviously has the talent to be a star but needs to work on his decision making in the final third, which is what coaching is supposed to improve.

In contrast, you can't coach a player like Spearing into being a physically dominant player, or teach a player like Downing how to beat a player from a standing start in order to create space for a quality shot or crossing opportunity.

For 2012 we need somebody further along the learning curve to jump straight into the first team and cope with the high expectations though, not somebody who needs a couple of years to acclimatize to life near the top...

    ReplyDelete
  52. 4 at most?? Rooney, Welbeck, Young, Carrick, Scholes, Evans, Ferdinand, Smalling & Jones play regularly from the top of my head, and that's just the at Man U. And I'm sure even you can admit that they're a top class club right?

The problem is the lack of genuine quality matchwinners throughout our squad, (and the money paid for our most recent intake of British talent), not the number of British players in our squad

    ReplyDelete
  53. First goal vs Chelsea, on saturday, anyone? Now that Robinson has been relegated, sell Reina, buy Robinson for half the price and invest in the team elsewhere, in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Personally, i think Moses could be quality and am even unsure of my post saying Di Santo was not good enough, a few weeks ago, having seen how Wigan have played recently. I've no doubt Moses would be some player in a better team and his 6 goals in 37 includes a spell of about 3 wins in 30 odd games when Wigan were everyone's whipping boys. If QPR go down, they have a few players that we could raid from them, who could do a job. Wigan, though, are saying up, so Moses, McCarthy, Al Habsi and Di Santo would all cost more than they are worth. Robinson and Hoilett from Blackburn, maybe Pedersen, should be options and Reina to be moved on as he costs double what Robinson would cost and is not double the keeper anymore.
