Charlie Adam: "Kenny Dalglish is top of the tree at Liverpool..."

Charlie Adam has had a great start to his Liverpool career so far, contributing one goal and three assists in 7 games, and emerging as an important cog in the club's creative engine. Adam is also enjoying working with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, and his enthusiasm for his new manager shone through in a recent interview.

After Scotland's Euro 2012 qualifying win over Liechtenstein, Adam spoke to The Scotsman, and enthused:

"No matter what he [Dalglish] does or where he goes he's the top of the tree at the club. He's well respected in the game and it's just a privilege to say he was the one that signed me for Liverpool."

It seems that despite being retired, Kenny still has the itch to play football:

"He's a bundle of laughs and a joy to work for every morning. He's always out on the training ground. The only problem is that he still wants to play. We don't like to let him but he still wants to kick the ball around, and does".

How does Dalglish compare to Walter Smith, Adam's manager at Rangers?

"I've never worked for someone like him. Walter Smith is calmer, more relaxed and laid back, but he [Dalglish] is on the go every day and his enthusiasm rubs off on us. He really celebrated the derby win last weekend, he was so happy. It means a lot to him to be back at Liverpool."

And the burning question: Can Adam understand Kenny's accent?

"Sometimes even I don't understand what he says. Some of the foreign guys are left just looking. Sometimes I interpret, but sometimes he speaks so fast that I can't".

  1. Is Adam paying you? He might be a nice bloke, but to say that he's "had a great start" proves that you don't go to the match. The jury is still out on Adam. Those of us who actually watch him, rather than relying on the media for a view, think he's on the slow side, gives possession away too much and can't track back effectively. We are also concerned that after 60 minutes he looks shot. He might become "an important cog" but so far he hasn't impressed that much.

  2. to create or score a goal every one in two games is good enough for me for a new team, start of the season and playing in a 2 man midfield instead of the usual liverpool 3 leaving creative players to create and defensive players to defend i'm happy. also i count 2 goals scored although one being a wicked deflection and considering nearly all his goals were from peno's or free kicks and his assists from corners for blackpool he hasnt contributed any of them yet so already his open play end results has improved with a man down. once his set pieces start flying in and corners connecting plus the added dimension of 3 man with gerrard taking some of the pressure of his game will last longer plus the added stamina levels improving and the much more talented fitness and training coaches to hep you will eat your words bootle bob.....

  4. Agreed. The lad's doing well and can only get better. And as his game isn't based on speed it's possible that we could get 10 years good service out of him. Great buy for a great price.

  5. and what your saying proves you dont understand football. while i agree he still has to prove himself, infact he has settled well and looks every inch a liverpool player. his positionng is fantastic and his ability to pass is second to none while also having a cracking shot on him. nearly every goal we have got this season has come through him at some point in the build up. i do wish people like you understood that doing the simple stuff well makes you a good player. you dont have to make 30 yard passes every minute or score 25 yard goals to be world class. just actually watch him play he always wants the ball and makes himself available and then more often than not lays the ball on to another player. get a grip mate and stop bad mouthing our players.try encouraging them rather than slamming them.

  6. Adam is a throwback to central midfielders who could actually play.  The problem is he also a throwback to central midfielders who couldn't run.  Rolls Royce technique...Citroen engine.

  7. Totally agree with 'Bootle Bob'......JK, to say that he and quote, 'contributing one goal and three assists in 7 games' unquote, is great, you really need to stop watching Liverpool Online. No disrespect to Adam, he needs to play, beyond the half hour, and shedding some weight, will help him to achieve that!.

  8. I think Adam is a class act in terms of actually doing something with a football, rather than being a sprinter without a brain. In the middle of the park he is what you need, then we have Gerrard too!!. Anyone who thinks he can't play is a fool!!!!!

  9. What's the matter JK?, don't you like being proved wrong?, it's just a difference of opinion, isn't?, as you yourself keeps saying. Is that why my comment been erased?, or is it because i'm right and you're wrong? :-).

  10. Maybe i'm a fool for not enjoying the "something with a football" being misplacing passes and being too slow to track back. No one's mentioned the red card which lead to a 4-0 thrashing. He's slow. His passes are often misplaced. He's not a terrible player but compared to even Henderson (88 percent pass completion against Sunderland, 90 percent pass completion against Arsenal) his passing is usually atrocious. A slight liability for now, i'm hoping he can improve and become that solid midfield cover we bought him for. He isn't on par with the midfield we should have. I hope he will be.

  11. No, Bootle Bob is right and his reasoning is dead on. Adam is very slow, gives the ball away, doesn't track back, is an awful tackler, picks up tons of cards (2nd most in the Prem since beginning of last season), wanders out of position, has no stamina beyond 55-60 mins...in short, a poor player and not good enough for Liverpool by a long way.

If football was only about taking free kicks, he'd be great. Or if we played Bolton every week. He was utterly outclassed at Tottenham, an embarrassment.

  12. statistically he is very good with 3 assists and 1 goal in 7 games.
as said before by others, has fantastic technique, is bad in tackling and has low fitness levels.
    sounds a bit like scholesy...

  13. He reminds me of a danny murphy for a new generation. He would be a truly great midfielder, if football was played at 80% of its current speed, and if the game was only 60 minutes long.

3 assists and one goal sounds quite impressive if he were a winger, but all it really tells you is that he has a really sweet left foot, and given the time and the space, can really do some damage. But that really only tells you part of the story, and if football was just about striking the ball sweetly, then liverpool's front two would still be robbie fowler and kenny dalglish.

It would seem from liverpool's transfer activity in the summer they looked at a list of the top ten players when it came to setting up chances. (Downing, adam, henderson and ashley young were on that list) Obviously in the hope of getting the best out of  Andy Carroll. But that is a kind of one dimensional way of looking at players.

The hope for liverpool fans must be that he hits the gym (treadmills not weights) works on his stamina and loses half a stone and gets nearer the fitness levels required for a modern midfielder. But the real test is to make the step up mentally.

being the star at a small club is one thing. You can swan around, the ball is always given to you, and the other 9 outfield players are there to do your work for you. He's at a big club now, where he is expected to be an important part of the team when you have the ball, and to work very hard as part of the team to get the ball back when the opposition has it. it's now a 90 minute game for him, where he has to be playing at the top of his blackpool form in every game.

  14. KKenny spends way over the odds for majority of his players..then how is it that he only pays 6million for a player (26yrs old)approaching his peak years and kenny buys him for a bargain price...surely that says something about the player and how good he is...just because k k buys him doesn't automethically qualify him to be world class as some people would have you believe ...At best a third forth choice for a club as great as LFC

  15. adams is exactly wot he is ..a £6 million player and not good enough for us i watch all lfc games and he just cant see a pass wen suarez makes a run and it frustrates suarez , we need a new alonso

  16. Utter rubbish article! I could not believe my eyes reading the article. What planet do you live on? Adam in a star in a relegation club, not near par with our standard! Not the lads fault that we bought him to a club way above his standard.

  17. He is substitute at best and KD was wrong to give him Meireles's place.

Meireles - Suarez worked much better but keep silent, you don't want to invoke rage of KK supporters.
