DAMN! How dare Liverpool win again? It's not allowed, remember? Sack Hodgson!

Oh dear. It's not quite going according to plan, is it? Those 'fans' who have been calling for Roy Hodgson's head were probably secretly hoping Liverpool would lose tonight so they could continue their risible 'Sack Hodgson' campaign. Well, it didn't happen - much to the irritation of Hodgson's short-sighted detractors, Liverpool won, and the mini-revival continues apace at Anfield.

You can imagine the scene now: all those 'fans' who have been professionally and personally denigrating Hodgson were probably looking at their watches in desperation, counting down the minutes, hoping and praying that nothing would go wrong. Enter Steven Gerrard, and their hopes and dreams were destroyed.

When a team is coming out of a slump and trying to build confidence, a win is a win. End of story. I'm not under any illusions about the overall performance, but momentum is being built and that can only be a good thing. And it's not like Houllier or Benitez's teams ever played below par and won, is it? No, that never ever happened.

I am not denying Hodgson has made mistakes; he has. However, IMO, tonight he did a lot of things right:

* Rested regular first teamers: Torres, Gerrard, Skrtel et al, preserving them for Sunday's important game against Chelsea.

* Gave our promising young players (Shelvey, Eccleston and Spearing) valuable experience of first team/European football.

* Made a positive, attacking change at half time by bringing on Gerrard.

* Utilised/rotated the squad well.

None of this will cut any ice with those that want Hodgson out though. The lame excuses will pile up again:

* The Europa League doesn't count.
* The Europa League is substandard.
* We didn't play well in the first half.
* Poulsen and Konchesky are the worst players in the history of the game.
* Gerrard saved Hodgson from the sack.
* Hodgson doesn't have the right CV.
* Hodgson has never won a trophy in a 'major' European country.
* Hodgson shot JFK.

Etc.

Earlier today, I looked at the first 18 games in the reigns of Hodgson, Houllier and Benitez. Tonight's game makes it 19, so let's take a look at the first 19 games for each manager:

In the first 19 games of their respective seasons:

* Hodgson lost fewer games than both Houllier and Benitez.

* Hodgson won the same number of home games as Benitez/2 more than Houllier.

* Hodgson’s team is unbeaten in 14 out of 19 games. Benitez and Houllier managed only 13 out of 19.

* Hodgson’s away record and goals scored are on a par with Benitez.

* Hodgson has won 9 out of 19 games, just 1 behind Benitez.

I am not trying to compare quality of managers here; I will readily concede that Benitez has proven himself to be a better manager than Hodgson in the past. I am merely trying to illustrate the hypocrisy of fans calling for Hodgson’s head. Football is a results business; Hodgson's overall results record is on a par with Benitez, and is superior to Houllier’s, yet we didn't see the Hodgson hypocrites calling for Houllier and Benitez to be sacked after just 18/19 games.

Benitez lost one third of his opening 18 games! Were people calling for his head back then? NO. Should they have been? NO.

Some more positive facts:

* 6 wins in 10 games at home this season (Overall, Liverpool are unbeaten in 9 out of 10 games at Anfield).

* Three straight victories, with 6 goals scored and only 2 conceded.

* 8 games unbeaten in Europe since the start of the season.

Clearly, these are obvious and compelling reasons to sack Hodgson.

The world probably doesn't make a lot of sense to the Hodgson hate mob at the moment, but don’t worry; all is not lost! Liverpool might lose on Sunday, and if that happens, the world will start to make sense again. Cling to that dream, and if you pray for it hard enough then it might just happen...

But what if it Liverpool win again?

Doesn't bear thinking about, does it?

  3. Yes, and this type of performance never happened under Benitez or Houllier, did it?

  4. Could say that about the 2005 Champions League final in fairness, and half of Benitez reign with either Gerrard or Torres, but thats what having a player like those 2 in the squad does for you. You can't criticize a manager because Gerrard or Torres has scored, again.

Tonight was very positive. We had Shelvey, Spearing, N'gog all starting and Ecclestone coming on as well, against a very good, full-strength Italian side and won 3-1, I don't think we can complain at all.

  5. i would never wish any liverpool team to lose...but i still would rather
have another man in charge....i have never liked or rated him,
other people may have differant ideas but thats my 10cents worth

  6. Surely though, you must see that we look terrible. I mean can you put your hand on your heart and say you enjoy watching us play? We look like a team with no soul, no identity and for most of the match, no idea.

Personally I put that down to the manager and firmly believe that he will be gone sooner rather than later. We are LIVERPOOL FC and we as fans are entitled to more than the dross we have been served up week after week since Roy has been in charge.

You can pigeon hole me with whatever label fits your agenda my friend but that is how I feel and much like you I am entitled to my opinion.

  7. A great result tonight with a lot of our youngsters playing. Roy seems to finally be finding his feet. give the guy a season, if he doesnt qualify for champions league then sack him!

  8. thing is as well.. it was so predictable... struggle for an hour... be forced into playing attacking football.. hope for the best in the last half hour.. seemingly just like most games this season.. hopefully against chelsea we can go for it from the start rather than be forced too do so in the last half hour..

  9. Your pathetic Liverpool fans never want Liverpool to lose they simple just want to see some interesting and creative football and that will never happen with Roy. He hasnt got insigt in top european football

  11. Think I only enjoyed watching Liverpool for half a season since Roy Evans left we've never been a great team to watch, Houllier, Benitez, then Hodgson have always set up with defense first.

Thats not to say it hasn't been succesful, but for the last 10 years we haven't exactly been the most attractive team in the league

  12. it was all stevie g, not hodgson, i still think hes nnot good enought, it shouldnt take 19 gmes to get a run of 3 together, an average manager who brought in average/ below average players to our squa but i as a fan am willing to wait till after xmas wit some money available to see who he brings in

  13. As long as the team plays to win, not just playing not to lose would be very much appreciated.

Jamie Kanwar has NEVER been to Anfield, have you jamie. FACT. he has been asked many many times to prove it and he cant, can you Jaime. See you in the Solly before the Chelsea game if you fancy a pint. Im sure you can find Anfield on your sat nav.

  21. For God's sake if you could tap the negativity here you could probably cause a colony of lemmings to top themselves with an overdose of prozac - both Houllier and Benitez's teams were capable of pressing forward and taking the game to other teams - get a grip or are you a Manc in disguise? YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  22. Totally right Jaime. I'll admit, I didn't want Roy and I still do not want him. HOWEVER, just when it was looking darkest he has produced. 4 matches on the trot without a defeat. Make it five on Sunday and he just might be able to truly build some momentum. Add to that the fact I think we have hired a guy who can bring in young talent (and not pay ridiculous prices for that talent) and who knows? I'm willing to admit I was wrong.

As for Rafa, I love him to death. But I think that, at the end of the day it was probably best for all concerned to part ways. They wars with H&G had obviously taken their toll on him. Anyway, keep up the good work.

  23. You have said yourself Jaimie, Hodgson was brought in as a short term manager to facilitate selling the club. Hodgson is too old and not tactically astute enough to take Liverpool to the level we all want the club to be competing at, afterall this is only the Europa League not Champions league.
Liverpool need a young experienced revolutionary manager who can take the squad into the next decade, the sooner we put that manager in place the sooner we can start the revolution. I'm afraid all we are doing now is treading water and allowing our rivals to get stronger and stronger.
So I will give credit to Hodgson tonight for staying positive and making the right substitutions, however if we had been playing a Champions league opponent tonight then we would have been more than 1-0 down at half time because the first half was very poor.
I look forward to Chelsea on Sunday to see if Hodgson really can compete with the big boys, however I know the answer is a new manager that fits the criteria above and not some short term stop gap dinosaur.

The fans in red that you saw celebrating when Liverpool scored were Liverpool fans. The same ones you are having a go at. But I wouldnt expect you to know what a Liverpool fan looks like as you have NEVER been to Anfield. You have a go at the internet warriors yet you HIDE behind your keyboard after every little childish dig.
If you are such a huge Red that you set up your own website/agenda, how come you got back to Bristol so quick after tonights game.

  25. Lavezzi, anyone remember him? Rafa tried to sign him last summer and the board wouldn't sanction it. We ended up recalling free transfer Voronin in the end.

  26. Give it a rest JK. Nobody wants to see Liverpool lose.

'fans' who have been calling for Roy Hodgson's head were secretly hoping Liverpool would lose tonight so they could continue their risible 'Sack Hodgson' campaign.

If they were secretly hoping for it then how do you know they were. You're basically making it up. Most us may have reservations about Hodgson but we would never want Liverpool to lose. If people do they are not real fans and so we shouldl ignore them, Why do you let it bother tou or give them the time of day?

There is no Sack Hodgson campaign. What sort of world do you live in mate; its full of cults and hate/sack campaigns, These don't exist. Never have, never will.

Seriously mate, it becoming tiresome. This is the only Liverpool site I visit regularly because it used to talk about interesting topics and it used to raise interesting debate, and sometimes you still do. But you've recently become obsessed with made up cults and made up campaigns.

  30. Lavezzi is class... did any one see his goal against AC Milan last week, where he chipped the goalkepper from 6 yards out, and the ball went in off the underside of the cross-bar... i think he would have been a good buy for liverpool...

    ReplyDelete
  31. First of all it is very insulting to say that fans who want a new manager also want the team to lose the game.

Secondly, think Liverpool played shit. If it wasn't for Stevie to save the bacon it would have stayed 0:1.

I agree that it is good that he gave the young players a chance and saved the 'big guns' for Chelsea game this weekend.

However, I still think you're not getting it in your comparison with Rafa and Houllier, Hodgo's opposition were far lesser teams. He scored wins against small teams and lost shitload of points in the league where it's critical. Blackpool, hello...?

If you are really keen to see Roy's team strength look no further than the next two games. Anything less than 6 points from the next two games will show you it's time for Roy to go.

    ReplyDelete
  32. its not about goals for or against its about points and league postion we are top of our europa league group fair enough but we weren lyin in 13th in d league wit 10 points after the 1st 18/19 games wit benitez or houllier and the fans that are callin for his head are d ones who want the league and are the ones wit high expectaions for the club

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am certain that Benitez faced Champions League opposition at the inception of his reign - therefore a significant difference in the level and quality of the opposition to the teams that Hodgson has had to face in the Europa league. In the group phase the teams were Monaco, (Champions League finalist the season before) Olympiacos and Deportivo I do recall the Benitez won the Champions league in his first season. One other difference is that Hodgson has been managing in the Premier league for many season. Your comparison does not include the quality of the personnel that Benitez was managing, which included the likes of Traore, Biscan, Diouf, Diao, etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  34. exactly... THIS IS LIVERPOOL.. not fulham or blackburn... we supposed to be mixing it with the big boys !!! as we are one of the BIG BOYS !!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Personally I was fed up with watching Houlliers team. Then I was excited at the prospect of having Rafa after the way Valencia destroyed us under him. Excitement turned to boredom however and I hoped if we did replace Rafa we'd get someone in who builds his teams on flair, not Gritt. Three managers three boring uninspiring styles of management. It's nothing personal against Hodgson, I am gutted I have to see more of the same crap week in week out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Only beaten once at home then? Would like to see northhampton and Blackpool fight it out to identify which one it was. Oh that right we drew with northhampton in your bizarro world.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Two big differences between RH and RB and possibily GH. Rafa came from a foreign country and had to contend with cultural, language barriers/issues whilst Roy did not. Secondly, Roy left with a vastly superior squad than Rafa.

Surely these two important facts impact/colour the stats diplayed above

  38. Gary - you need to remove your head from the sand. Liverpool fans have been actively calling for Hodgson's head. Go to RAWK; TIA: Tomkins Times (Who wrote a post titled: End of an error - why Roy has to go). I can't believe you're not being honest about this; dozens of people on this site have argued the same; there are a couple of comments ON THIS THREAD saying the same.

And you say nobody wants to see Liverpool lose?! Nonsense. Here is one example in a comment from this site:

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2010/10/panic-stations-sack-roy-hodgson.html#jsid-1288628993-898

"I secretly wanted us to lose the last two matches because personally don't think Hodgson is the right person – either for the long term or the short term".

I've seen similar comments on other message boards, and given the evidence, it's reasonable to assume there will lots of other fans thinking the same.

When I say 'Pro-Benitez Cult', I am not literally saying it's a Cult; it's a way to riducule them, as I'm sure you can see.

And such people do exist; it's not just me who sees it.

  43. We were lucky tonight, the three goals we scored where due to their mistakes not our brilliance. We played very poorly for the first hour and only when they started to get tired & make mistakes did we see an end product. Why Jovanic came off instead of Poulsen at half time just shows how clueless Hodgson is, Jovanic provided width and pace on the left wing an area that we could exploit due to the way Napoli play with 3 at the back.
Poulsen was shocking tonight and has been poor in every game he has played, with Lucas and Spearing why do we need him anyway?

Youngsters are a mixed bag but good for them. But to be honest I just don't see a team with a solid core. Oh well, early days. But I look at the team and it reminds me of watching doctor who twenty years after I first saw it as a kid: something seems different, something lacking. Not sure I will ever feel the same about it.

  49. I'm not sure what your angle is with articles like these.

Do you write because you truly believe roy deserves time, is the right man for the job and will transform the club OR have you now become so fixated on the anti Hodgson brigade just as you were on the supposed pro Rafa brigade.

Ive never seen someone write so many articles with an agenda against so many of the fans that support the same club as yourself just because they dont share the same opinion as yourself.

Why not write a report about how you feel the match went, where you think roy can improve and who you see starting against Chelsea on sunday.

Why can you not accept that all football supporters dont necessarily have to share the same opinion. Its people like you that are openly trying to drive a wedge between the supporters of the same club.

You did it between the fans who did and didnt support Benitez and now your attempting to continue widening the divide by pitting people who support Roy against people who dont.

Your a nasty piece of work and it seems will stop at nothing to destroy the harmony between our own fans.

  50. Tell me this: how can a squad that finished 7th be 'vastly superior' to a squad that finished 4th and qualified for the CL; a squad that then went on to win the CL the next season; a squad that had 9 out of 11 players in the CL final.

Just because you say it doesn't make it true. Houllier's squad was clearly superior to what Benitez dumped on Hodgson.

  51. We need him because we are collecting very slow players who have the potential to get slower. we can add pulson to Cole, Konchesky and Jamie Carrager. I hope someone realises quickly that Carra is now starting to cost us a lot of goals. Will Roy be man enough to drop our stand in skipper.. F@@K will he.

standards have improved in 6 years...

individually the players we have today are arguably of much higher standard than 2004, just look at there individial stats ... ie experience, medals, internationals
houllier did good job getting them to 4th
benitez did fuckin amazin to get them to win CL...

  57. before i reply to this comment i have to ask... are you actually a liverpool fan? cos other than the blackburn game i haven't seen a decent performance out of a liverpool team in long enough.hodgson isn't up to the job because he doesn't understand what it is to be the manager of liverpool. before you procrastinating over this, what i mean is, he sees a point away to brum a good result. that itself is not good enough. five midfielders and four defenders at home to northampton town isn't good enough. comprende? or were you too busy crying over evertons loss to brentford???

on this comment. hodgson spent four million on PK and 4.5 on poulson and 11.5 on RM. could he not just have kept aqui, insua and promoted spearing (all better) and saved the club 20 million pounds? therefore hodgson has cost the club 20 mill, got nothing in return and has visibly made the first team worse! he deserves the sack.

Now run along to goodison and write an update on how awesomely an understrength everton side pumped liverpool before passing on stories to the suns dear diary column

the first season percentage shouldnt technically count if they include european games as
benitez's team was in Champions League, vs Hodgson's Europa.
Not to mention, this evening's win was a scrappy one.
his tactics are seriously mind boggling. 5 central midfielders? shelvey, spearing, gerrard, meireles and poulsen? lack of width, barely anyone running into the box?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jamie,

Don't mistake my criticism as hostile or deliberately provocative; it is merely honest.

I had never heard of your site till someone - on another blog - posted a rather interesting critique of your work. The entire gist of it was that you are not, in fact, a Liverpool fan. Sufficiently intrigued, I decided to have a look at your site. I read your posts to get a better understanding of where you stand.

This latest analysis by you sums it up. Nothing about how the team played. Just another pointless diatribe against Liverpool fans who don't care much for Hodgson. To back it up, you ve thrown up statistics that are laughable. 4 of Hodgson's "victories" came against minor teams (Rabotnicki and Trabonzsopor). 2 came against relatively decent teams. In comparison, Rafa beat Deportivo (a top Spanish club) and Monaco (who were defending their Champs League title from the previous year). Numbers are great and all, but if we want to go by that token, Man United is no better than my Sunday League team, since both field 11 players. You cant ignore the qualitative aspects so completely. Its really disingenous.

Now look at the rest of your post. You mention 2 players in your post. Poulsen - whose header (or should I call it assist) was epically poor. And Konchesky, who barely put up token resistance when Lavezzi took him on. Hate to say it, but any objective analysis of this match would put them under the category of "poor performers" today evening.

The rest of it is the standard diatribe. You're not a fan of Hodgson but you re just out to upset the people who want him out. Why? I don't know. To get a reaction, probably. The problem, Jamie, is that your entire raison d'etre is not to provide analysis of Liverpools players or performances. It is to show Liverpool fans how wrong they are (using some very questionable stats). What are you achieving and how is it good for the club? The lsit of complaints against Hodgson is long and entirely understandable (took him 4 days to stand up for Torres DESPITE Nani's audition for the Portugese olympic diving team). It doesn't add up.

Personally, I don't think you are a Liverpool fan. For a very simple reason: you genuinely don't like Liverpool fans. If you were a Liverpool fan, we would see some analysis from you. Maybe some plaudits for the better players. You know, something more than "made positive changes, brought Gerrard on". Stuff like that makes us wonder if you bothered watching the match, or just read the stats at the end of it? (Gerrard (sub), Goals: Gerrard, Gerrard, Gerrard ergo Gerrard sub was positive)

The analysis tends to be half baked and the defence of Hodgson (if you could even call it that) is half-hearted at best. Most of your stuff says the same thing over and over again - Liverpool fans are delusional and abusive people. And, because they never exhibited this against Benitez ( a bit surprising, given their delusions and abusiveness), they must be in a Benitez cult.

I suspect most of your critics will agree with me.

    A Montrealer

  64. Where was Pacheco? Why is he being sidelined so consistenly?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Because other teams also got better. The whole world doesn't stand still. In the last six years Spurs, Man City, Villa have all improved. We had a bad season last season but it was made to look worse because Spurs, Man City and Villa got better. Can i remind you of the final table from last season. We lost the only one more game than Spurs who finished 4th. We won the same amount of games as Man City and actually won more than Villa. We had the same goal difference as Spurs. There was a bigger points differnce between 2nd and 3rd than there was betwen 4th and 7th. It was a bad season because we had begun to expect more. But to ignore that Spurs. Manc City and Villa had improved is ignoring the context.

You know you find it insulting that people are judging Hodgson on the 4 months he was in charge, well isn't it a bit insutling that you are judging Rafa and the squad on one 7th finish. What about the fact that the majoroty of this squad finished 2nd the previous year got out highest points total since we last won the league. What about the fact that we scored more than 100 goals in that season. What about the fact that we reached 2 CL finals, winning one. Could we have ever imagined that under Souness, Evans and Houllier. What about the fact that we were ranked the top team in Europe for a couple of years. What about the fact that we were serious contenders for the CL every year, not just filling numbers but serious contenders, getting to the latter stages almost every year under Rafa.

He had a bad season and he had to go but his tenure should not be judged on that season alone. By doing so you are no better than the people who are calling for RH's head after 4 months.

    ReplyDelete
  66. So we should expect nothing less from RH other than delivering the europa league cup :)

  67. just to add... if two disappointing 0-0 draws where converted to wins in the close of the season.. against fulham at home and hull away, we would have made 4th place... i think the distraction of the uefa cup semi also played a part...

also 2004 we had 60 pts finished 4th
last year we had 63 pts finished 7th

You are really, really, just out to spark anger in all Liverpool fans, and I guess yulred is right, you aren't very pro-Liverpool to begin with. Cmon guys, why spark civil war when all we can do is just treat it like a joke column? I do, for sure. It's an entertaining read to see how much sense, or lack thereof, that he is making everytime.

Please consider the fact that this is all a massively hungry attempt at trolling, the last time I typed the word "troll", I got deleted. Integrity, I'd say!

  69. Let's not misunderstand victories here. These days a Hodgson victory does not mean he is tactically sound. Inspiring performances are still played by players, and with 5 midfielders on the pitch, that didn't seem very sound. Gerrard is doing what he does best to get results, that doesn't have to mean Hodgson has a part in it. (oh please don't use this against rafa :'( )

    ReplyDelete
  70. i love it. You just make shit up as you go along to suit your argument. Patehtic.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ah! Now I've seen the results comparison displayed in irrefutable black and white, enclosed in nice little boxes and beautiful use of a little colour for contrast, I admit I must change my mind on our new manager.
By the way, I'm in no way a "in raffa we trust" or "raffatolla" follower (although I was a fan of that display of devotion! How could you not!!?) and The Mad Frenchman does not hold a special place in my heart because he wrecked Thommo's chances of the double by rushing back after such a traumatic operation full of drugs and everything! Just wanted to clarify that upfront. I suppose I should disclose that I firmly believe that Kenny IS the man that should be manager, while I'm at it, for many reasons that don't need to be gone into.

Or should I say USED TO BELIEVE KENNY IS THE MAN??
As now, after studying those FACTS I think that I can ignore the ignorance of our history Hodgeson admits. Ignore the boring, negative archaic "style" of football Hodgeson adheres to. Ignore the "white man speaks with fork tongue" character Hodgeson displays. Ignore his rambling drivel press conferences (oh! Actually I've already accomplished that one) and ignore his fascination with his own "vast experience throughout Europe!! He reminds me of Uncle Albert... "DURING THE WAR.....!!!"
I'll let the fact that the victories (apart from this last one, even though the co-commentator on my broadcast hear in LA, Tommy Smyth, "corrected the commentator, some yank, at the end ..."I have to correct you there", on the yank giving the score, "it should say Gerrard 3, Napoli 1") wher gained, on the most part, over crap teams. Oh, and some of the defeats too!!!

    I feel much better now.
    No worries.
We are not going down the pan with this embarrassment for a manager. A situation made even worse by the fact the cure for the team's ailments sits twenty rows behind that nob'ed every week. (Or three or four days. See! Just used "old speak". No wonder I rate Kenny. Must be out of touch with the "modern game".

  72. Games that go to penalties are officially recorded as draws. That's why you always see 'Drew 2-2 after extra time. Won 4-2 on penalties'. I don't make the rules. A penalty shootout is not a football match, is it?
    - with this kind of resoning you starting too scare me mate. Seriously. From which mental institution are you running this site?

  73. Jamie,

You've argued that Hodegson is not the right man to take liverpool forward in the long term even if he were to take us to fourth place in the league and signed a three year contract back in June. So the only difference between you and fans that want him out is the timing of this. If in January we are languishing at mid bottom having lost to Chelsea & Tottenham and way off 4th place you yourself have said that he should go. LFC's problem is that we have been far too reluctant in the past to consider regime change when a manger is clearly underperforming. If this is the beginning of a new era under NESV and Hodgeson is not performing then he has to go if there is an available better candidate out there.

Hodgeson has not endeared himself to LFC fans his press conferences have been quite frankly awful but he will get time if he delivers results on the pitch end of story and fans who pay their money to go and watch games at Anfield or away or on the tv or in the pub etc have a right to comments that football its emotion and passion and its often not fair!

A couple of posters on this site and elsewhere have suggested that they want liverpool to loose so that hodegson will be forced out doesn't prove that this is a serious problem and suggestion otherwise is just tarnishing fans with the same brush. Also i'm sure there were similar fans last season hoping that liverpool would loose so that it would hasten the departure of Benitez!

Finally you refer to an article written by Paul Tomkins which I actually read in which he argues that Hodgeson will have to go in the longer term although if results improve then he will get more time. Isn't this what you are arguing although you seem adament that he will go in the summer?

  74. I commented on one of your other articles the other day regarding RH's lack of big-club attitude and ambition. He proved this again, last night:

"I think that in the first half we hadn't played that badly. I thought we were a bit unlucky to be a goal down at half-time to an error that was punished." - LFC.tv

Enough said. Even if we get fourth and win the Europa League and FA Cup this season, I would want him out for the simple reason that every word he utters suggests that Liverpool Football Club is all of a sudden a small club. Small is as small acts. Although his appointment suggests that we are heading in that direction, we certainly aren't a small club yet, and deserve a manager who knows it!

  76. It wasn't deleted - it was caught by the filter as certain blocked words/phrases had been used. Such comments have to be chcekd before going live.

I'm not going to make it live becauset eh bulk of your post is complaining *again* about this site; how it used to better; moaning about me; making assumptions about me.

I've said this once and I'll say it again: posts that moan about me/my approach/the site etc will be deleted. This is stated quite clearly in the comment policy. If people have a problem with me they can email me. The comment threads are for posts about football. if I don't have this policy then every thread would just derail into a slanging match about me.

If people don't like that, they don't have to visit this site.

  77. I never want to see Liverpool FC lose any game! Ever!

I want to see LFC playing good, attacking football, with players who look assured of themselves. Of course, we have not seen much of that this season (yet), and thats not really Roy's fault. New players in the team, new tactics (mostly), new owners, new atmosphere at Anfield. Same old expectations from the fans - that LFC must be the best.

Those expectations are not entirely realistic since Hodgso has to be allowed some time to develop and establish a winning style of play. What has frustrated me to no end is the tactics that has been employed in many of the games so far. It just seems to be a continuation of what Rafa did. 2 holding midfielder at home, 1 striker up front, Gerrard behind Torres, lack of creativity from midfield, incredibly calamitous defending at times. We saw this under Rafa, and we're still seeing this now. So why employ the same tactics? These tactics have resulted in us leaking goals last season, and we're seeing the same now.

Also, our new signings are not producing, probably because they're not entirely comfortable in their current positions. E.g. Cole is right footed, but is played persistently on the left - resulting in him cutting in from the wing and giving us no width. Why NOT play him on the right? Maxi, his goal at Bolton aside, is STILL not convincing down that right wing (thats maybe not Roy's fault, but why persist with the same strategy?). I'm hoping things improve. I hope Hodgson does prove his doubters wrong and gets LFC back into the top 4, helping to rebuild a stronger foundation in the process, over the next few months.

But I dont think Hodgson was ever intended to be a long term replacement manager anyway. I think he was meant to steady the ship, and lay a foundation for the new owners to build on. LFC is in transition, and transition often means instability. Hopefully by January 2011 most of the instability would have left, and the team would be more settled.

  78. Got to agree with Jamie on his current "crusade." No way should Liverpool fans be calling for Roy's head after such a short period of time. However, I should remind him that he didn't exactly afford that patience (of which the Liverpool way usually means - "give him till the end of the season") to Rafa last term. ;) I know that Benitez had already been at the helm for some time, but as I say, we have traditionally been a very sensible and loyal fanbase for our managers. Even Souness was given his time.

It's utterly counterproductive to be destabilizing a season's effort so early in the campaign. Give Roy time. Give him a bit of trust. Give him our support!! For God's sake, what has happened to the modern football fan? There's a decent article (vid) on the BBC website that sums it up to me (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/9156977.stm). Look for Levein's quote right at the end - in summary, modern society's demand for instant success means we may never see the likes of Shankly again.

We really should be above all this. Let's give Roy till the end of the season, and if we're lower than 7th, then we can start calling for his head. Above that and he'll have trumped Rafa's parting "gift" and we should give him more time.

  79. It was a completely valid post. I mainly talk about the topic of the debate and I make some constructive points about you and your articles. I do not slag you off. In fact I said that I enjoy debating with the people on the site, I would just prefer it if there was more talk about the actual football on the pitch, and I think that would be a valid opinion for most of the posters here. This is one of the better sites to talk about football as in general the posters are good, its just a shame that there is no talk abotu teh actual football anymore. It's all become about the polictics and the finance, cults and campaigns.

Its a shame that you are not able to take any criticism of your work without taking it as a personal insult.

  80. Glad we got rid of Houllier, glad we got rid of Benitez, both overspent on their squads, both ignored the youth, both had a plan, both were given time to to built a squad, both played poor boring football, both failed, it was time for both to go when they did.

Disgusted with the treatment Hodgson has been give by some liverpool fans, especialy as we all know its a short term appointment and will be moved on "by mutual consent" once NESV get their house in order. Whether that is in the jan or next may doesn't really matter, he's OUR manager and you are supposed to give him support and defend him against all attacks, right or wrong, just like we did with Houllier and Benitez!

hypocrisy? double standards? it reeks, get behind your team and stop moaning when we win, just think of it as Roy making it easier for his sucessor when he comes.

  81. Nonsense, Gary. In your last 3 or 4 posts you've been moaning about me in one way or another. These threads are not about 'constructive criticism' about me, my writing style, my approach etc; they are about discussing football and the issues. Challenge the argument, not the person behind them.

And once again we're involved in a pointless exchenge that has nothing to do with the subject being discussed. If you have any further 'constructive criticism' to add about me or the site, then do so via email.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I have challenged the argument JK, by saying that this "sack Hodgson campaign" doesn't actually exist and that you are making a much bigger deal of it than is necessary. A tiny minority of poeple are hoping we lose.

If this site is about football and other issues, when was the last time you wrote about an actual game of football. When was the last time you wrote about the manager's tactics and decisions. The finance stuff is fine, but this new agenda that you have of proving the pro-Benitez/Anti-Hodgson wrong is pointless. The more you talk about Rafa, the more other people will talk about it, and then you'll claim that people are still part of a pro Benitez cult. Can't you see that its self perpetuating. In the last three days you have written numerous articles about Hodgson, and whether he should be treated fairly. People have come on here and given their honest opinion but because you don't agree with it so you write another article. So more people come on and again give their opinion that RH should be sacked. And then you take the higher ground again and claim hypocrisy and unfair treatment. Well, if you've invited comment by putting your article in the public domain then you have to deal with the fact that other people have a different opinion to you. And just because a small amount of people say that they want to see us lose so that RH gets the sack, it doesn't mean that there is some sort of campaign against him.

You yourself believe that RH will be gone by the summer. Why the summer and not now? Why July and not November? Why is your opinion more valid than somebody who wants to see RH sacked now. Its not. Ask a majority of people who want RH sacked and they will say it is not about the stats, it is about the manner in which we are playing football and that is completely valid. It is not some Machiavellian plot to destroy a man who as done nothing wrong.

Even you will admit that everything under RH is not right but you've decided to take the higher ground to show you are better than this cult or this campaign and you are after the truth. The fact is that you don't see Roy being in charge next year. Others don't want him in charge now. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Either way he is not the long term answer, so why waste a season and not get rid of him (i don't agree we shoudl; do that by the way; he shodl have at least til January)

    I think that's fairly contructive, don't you.

  84. Hello Jamie I have been reading a few of your articles recently and I am just wondering why you are so pro- Hodgson! Can you honestly say hand on heart you are enjoing the 'attacking' football' we have been playing under him.
    If a man is qualified in his position  to be where he deserves to be then I will put my hands up and openly admit that. But can's you see the blatant mistakes that Hodgson is making within the team setup. Last night's game just illustrated his tactical ineptitude and negativity again;

First of all he played Jonjo Shelvey who is a central midfielder out of position at right midfield on his home debut, despite being a natural central midfielder.
He then puts Meireles, who is another central midfielder on the other wing, to supply some width and provide service for Ngog. My suggestion would have been to play player that can actually play in that position such as Pacheco or Babel. Fair point?

By the final whistle we had a midfield line up of meireles, spearing, lucas, gerrard and shelvey (all central midfielders)

Had Gerrard not come come on to change the game, we would have surely lost. But against better opposition, no disrespect to Napoli, we would have been annihilated before half time.

Even the most ardent Liverpool fan can not defend the contribution, distribution and performance of Christian Poulson. And all this was, of course, sprinkled in with his usual inability to show any kind of positional sense. As well as his mistake that helped to set up the goal that Napoli scored I might add. What Hodgson sees in this player is beyond me.

Now at this point you will probably come out and say that Benitez made some bad signings in his time, as well as commenting on the fact that Hodgson was left with Benitez' substandard signing blah blah blah! We know Rafa made some bad signings, as well as some very good ones, Torres, Alonso, Masherano, to name a few! I even liked Luis Garcia! My point is that if Hodgson sees a player like Poulson, for example, and thinks to himself that this is the type of player that a team aspiring for Premiership and European Cup success in the very near future needs..... I ask you, would you trust this man to use transfer funds to buy players of similar quality?

As for his media savvy with relation to LFC and his inexplainable comments regarding team performances during press conferences are simply baffling! What we have learned from Hodgson during his media musings are that our best players are for sale to our fiercest rivals, performances that have been blatantly sub-standard heralded as the ' best performance I have seen from my team this season" ( See Post match Everton comments). Not to mention criticizing Liverpool supporters during the Hicks Gillett protests, oh yes and criticizing foreign journalists that asked hima simple question by replying that he wouldn't manage in their country again.

These are the main failings from Hodgson as viewed by us Liverpool supporters as a whole! I personally have nothing against Hodgson, however, as a manager I feel that he is not suited to a major European force that is Liverpool Football Club. I feel, and whether other people do as well is their prerogative, that Hodgson is simply out of his depth when it comes to managing a big club! Again at this point you are probably going to come and say that our team at the moment is not a major European force any more........ However Hodgson is not suited to big clubs, as proved by his time at Inter Milan. I know what you are going to say, that he got Inter to the UEFA Cup final that year, yeah.... which he lost....oooops.

For some people to write articles like that...they are in the same league as the Sun and papers like that, just sensationalistic bullshit. Its attention seeking. 90. When it was obvious that Masch was going to leave, he had to find an experienced holding midfielder who was tough as nails. Enter Poulsen. Will anyone give this player a chance? Lucas put in some pathetic shifts under Rafa, misplaced every single pass, and we used to slate Rafa for playing him. Now its Poulsen! Give the guy a chance to settle in to the team, if he's not good enough he'll go. It's not like we had the money in September, but we do now. We have Spearing and Shelvey too, but I feel at least Spearing will be sold before the end of the season.

  95. Your talkin shite mate. Benitez inherited a CL squad, Roy inherited a Europa league squad. He can only compete in the competitions he is in, can you not see this??
Rafa inherited some dross like you mentioned, and Roy inherited Insua, Johnson, Maxi, Lucas, Kuyt, Babel, Ngog etc, hardly world beaters. Jamie consistently points out the facts and figures not to suite himself but to point out the reality of the current climate that Roy has to work under. These factors are due to H&G and Rafa, no one else. If you cannot see this you are deluded. Rafa is a fine manager, you don't win a CL and La Liga if you are not, but he failed, made some huge blunders and left a mediocre team in his wake. He didn't win the league after 6 years, thus he had to go. Accept it, they are the facts.

You do realize that your not allowed to just pick the competition you want to enter, you have to earn it, qualify for it.

Roy is not (yet) everyone's cup of tea - but he deserves a chance to see what he can do. If we're Top 6 or better he stays in my opinion. Then minimum requirement for any LFC manager is Top 4 - with winning the league an absolute target and special bonus when it happens.

I have nothing personal against him but i think we will not attract any top players under him, also he talks so much crap it's unreal, also as a manager you are suppose to defend your player when certain red nose knob calls Torres cheat it takes him 1 week to respond, also thinks about seeling Torres to the Mancs what a loser,he should stop licking fergie and be a man, he is the manager of Liverpool FC the most succesfull Team in GB. 104. You are joking right jamie, Houllier left us Biscan, Traore, smicer, cisse etc all the players we had to let go on a free transfer becuase no 1 wanted them, Rafa Leaves with Mascherano, £23m,Reina about £25m, Torres about £40- £50m, Johnson is crap but we will get our money back £15m, Agger £10m, Kuyt £10m, Babel and lucas min £10m and reira & benny we got £10m, so the total is about you work it out.

  106. Few points:

    1. IMHO Rafa inherited a much stronger squad than Roy.  Sami Finnan? Riise Didi Kewell are/were much better than our current CB/RB/LB any of the DM's or Wingers;
    2. Liverpool are playing badly but seem to be improving (last nights performance should not be taken into account as Roy Rested a lot of senior players);
    3. Liverpool fans support their manager historically, Souness, Evans or Houllier never got this much stick when they were in the job.

Fans need to get behind the players we have and the manager. Judge him after a season at least. He has taken control at a time when the club was in crisis on and off the pitch, I think he has done OK in the circumstances. Poulsen is a bad signing, but he is Roy's man in the dressing room. Remember Jean Michel Ferri?

  107. And you have the equal audacity to suggest that we did deserve to be behind in the first half?
Sometimes, coming on to these boards is like walking into Wetherspoons.
'I just wish we could clone Stevie G'.

  108. Why was it moved Jaimie, I thought it was quite relevant to this topic? Has it been moved to a thread which is less "hot" as to avoid it being read by so many visitors?

    ReplyDelete
  109. It wasn't moved - I don't have the ability to move comments. YOU posted it in that thread, for whatever reason.

  110. Imho mates, yesterday night Roy made two decent offensive subs from the bench, especially when He called for the services of Nathan Eccleston :)
    Good business Roy.
Several times We can concede a little bit of credit to our managers, it won't ruin our wealthy state: He can make both some errors & good things, but some Fans appear tireslessy obsessed by the need of bringing discredit on him at any cost.
Just one time You could give a break to Roy...

  111. Ohhh finally good old common sense by a deep Liverpool's fan :)
You're welcome here Peter, You remind me the true original classy nature of a Liverpool Fan :)
You should post more often :)
All these rants from The rafa obsessed apologists are depressing, and You are a storm of fresh air :)
They appears Leicester Fans in a worse version.....

  112. If you are thinking he is a proper fan and leading the way, I suggest you consult your psychiatrist before posting again.

  113. I can honestly say I didn't Jaimie, don't know what happened there!

  114. You can jeep spouting all the stats you like. The fact remains that Roy Hodgson should not have been considered for the Liverpool job let alone actually get.

THIS JOKER NEEDS TO BE SACKED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT - I AM STARTING TO HATE HIM WITH A PASSION THE LONGER HE STAYS AROUND.

He's totally clueless like you Jaimie

  115. Well mike 1 game has passed 3 points achieved against the champs and now a poor wigan to go 2 but hey it was all torres dont bother giving Roy any credit for the result

    ReplyDelete
  116. Won it with a team that was already there and what did he win with his own squad of players 7th place

    ReplyDelete
  117. So any Liverpool supporter not convinced by Roy is not a fan and secretly hopes we lose games with him as our manager?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes, that is exactly what I was arguing.

    Please read the article properly.

  119. Nah, there ... first Wigan - so no 6 out of six, now Stoke even beat us. What's more interesting is that our performance in both games was apalling. Wigan should have beaten us solid 3:1, maybe more. Stoke could have gone even better than 2:0.

I'm sorry guys, but as a Liverpool fan I think that Roy Hodgson is bringing this club to level of Fulham, West Ham and likes. He clearly has done nothing for the reputation of LCF apart from bringing the shame to the history and reputation of LFC.

Roy Hodgson has no vision, is clueless in most situations and if he's not gone by Wednesday then you can kiss goodbye Reina, Torres and maybe half a dozen of other decent players. You'll be stuck with Jamie, Konchesky, Ngog, Poulsen ... and we'll maybe manage to beat Leeds ,Sheffield(s), Hull and likes next season.
