Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has dismissed suggestions that one of Liverpool's most important players is set to leave the club this summer.
Barcelona have been continually linked with Philippe Coutinho this season, and the most recent reports claim that the Catalan club is in 'advanced talks' with Liverpool over €60m deal.
When asked on Wednesday about Coutinho's future, Klopp emphatically denied the reports, and insisted there are 'absolutely no plans to sell' the Brazilian:
"When did he sign his new contract? What our owners say is there is the absolute opportunity not to sell anybody if we do not want to. That means we can bring in other players and it is a good situation. We have a stable squad with a good basis".
With the greatest respect to Klopp, Coutinho's new contract will not make a shred of difference to Liverpool's chances of keeping him at Anfield, and there is historical precedent to support that contention. After signing his obscene £150k-a-week deal, Coutinho raved:
“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years. It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms. Jürgen is a great manager. He is a winner and every player feels honoured to play at this great club for this great manager".
Awwww. How sweet. Brings a tear to the eye. Now, compare this with Luis Suarez:
* Dec 2013: Signed a new 4.5 year contract worth £160k-a-week.
* After signing, Suarez gushed: "I am delighted to have my future secured for the long term. I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. I love the city and the supporters. He [Brendan Rodgers] was very important. When you have confidence with the manager you can try your best".
Sound familiar? 6 months later, Suarez ditched his new long-term contract and 'ambitions of winning trophies with Liverpool' to sign for Barcelona.
History will repeat itself, either this summer or next summer.
* Coutinho: Hailed as 'amazing' by Joel Matip.
