Liverpool are currently linked with a shock summer move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, and new reports this week suggest that Benzema is ready to quit the Bernabeu.
Last month, Spanish newspaper Don Balon claimed:
"Karim Benzema has five serious offers on the table, including bids from Arsenal and Liverpool"
On Tuesday, Don Balon further claimed:
"Benzema has ordered his agent to listen to any offers that arrive this summer. The striker is irritated by whistles from home fans, and will consider a transfer".
Liverpool have been linked with Benzema many times in the past, and the most recent link came December 2015, when The Telegraph reported:
"Liverpool are ready to make a £50 million bid for Karim Benzema, [who is] happy to leave the Bernabéu"
Benzema - who, according to ex-Reds boss Gerard Houllier, is 'world-class' - remains a regular starter at Madrid, but at the age of 29, he's entering the twilight of his career, and recent reports in Spain suggest that Real are willing to sell for '€50m-€60m'.
Benzema is the epitome of a marquee signing, but I can't see Liverpool sealing this deal. Irrespective of this season's performance (which, despite being third, remains patchy), Benzema will probably see the Reds as a big step down, and there are probably other clubs in the Premier League more willing match (or exceed) his €150k-a-week salary.
Plus, Benzema simply isn't a Klopp-type player. His languid style doesn't fit Liverpool's high intensity 'heavy metal football', and unlike most of the Reds' players, Benzema is not placid, pliable, and/or subservient; he has a mind of his own, and in my view, Klopp will not allow a player like that to threaten his paternalistic hold on the squad.
Benzema and Klopp = Oil and water.
