When will Jordan Henderson be fit enough to player for Liverpool again? It's now 8 weeks on the sidelines for Liverpool's captain, and according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, there's no quick fix to Hendo's ongoing issues.
When asked about Henderson during his Thursday pre-match press conference, Klopp told reporters:
"We have to wait until he [Henderson] feels absolutely nothing, that’s how it is. That’s what we are still waiting for. We have to make steps still [before] he can be part of team training".
With regards to a timeframe for returning, Klopp added:
"It could be next week in training, or the week after. Everything will be good. I am pretty sure he will have a few games in this season.”
I'm calling it now: Hendo's season is over. Even if he returns to training in two weeks, that'll be ten weeks on the sidelines without kicking a ball, and it'll take time to get back up to full match fitness.
In my view, Klopp also has to face the possible long-term reality that he may not be able to build a team around Henderson. A captain needs to be on the field for the majority of games, and Hendo is increasingly injury prone:
* 5 separate injuries in the last 20 months (Heel, matatarsal, ligament, foot, plantar fasciitis).
* 208 days on the sidelines. 41 games missed.
Liverpool severely lack onfield leadership, and having the captain constantly missing obviously exacerbates this problem.
* €35m-rated (CIES Football Observatory). Described by Steven Gerrard as 'excellent'.
