Anfield Update: 'Brilliant' £100k-a-week star admits he wants to 'play' for Liverpool next season in the CL

Will Liverpool qualify for the Champions League this season? 'brilliant' LFC defender Joel Matip hopes so, and with only five games remaining of the season, the Reds are close to getting back into Europe's elite competition.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo today, Matip insisted that Liverpool 'belongs in the Champions League', and explained why he's excited about qualifying:

“I want to play in the Champions League because then you play against the biggest teams and the biggest players and everybody will enjoy this.”

Nothing is ever a foregone conclusion, but:

* Liverpool are currently 3rd in the Premier League, 6 points ahead of Manchester United, and 9 points ahead of Arsenal.

* Both teams have games in hand, but the Reds have the superior goal difference.

* Arsenal still have to play Man City, Man Utd, Spurs, and Everton, and given their patchy form this season, it's highly unlikely that Arsene Wenger's team will win all four of those games.

* Man Utd must face Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, and Spurs before the season is out, and they are bound to drop points somewhere along the line.

* Liverpool's remaining games are West Brom, Crystal Palace, Watford, Southampton, West Ham, and Middlesbrough, and whilst the Reds will probably drop a couple of points somewhere, it's not likely to be fatal to the club's Champions League hopes.

It's fair to say that Liverpool's Champions League destiny is in the club's own hands, and if Klopp's team misses out now, this season will rightly be considered a gargantuan failure.

* Matip: Reportedly on £100k-a-week
