Deal Close? 'Brilliant' €38m powerhouse keen to sign £100k-a-week contract with Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can will soon enter the final 12-months of his current deal, and it looks like the Reds will have to pay through the nose to keep him at Anfield next season.

At the end of March, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Liverpool are 'in talks' with Can, and insisted:

“We are completely convinced, he is convinced, I am convinced [that he'll sign]. It will happen, or not, but it’s a normal thing too".

Now, The Guardian claims:

"Can is looking for salary of £100k-a-week. He prefers a deeper midfield role to the more advanced position that, with its increased number of sprints, he blamed on the persistent calf problem that plagued him this season".

Can's performances have improved over the last month, so amongst some fickle fans, the prevailing view has suddenly changed from 'he's not good enough' to 'he's actually a great player!'.

In my view, Can is just like Mignolet: capable of short bursts of good form, but guaranteed to ultimately make mistakes and/or let the team down.

And like Mignolet, the end result will probably be the same: an unwarranted new long-term contract. This is Liverpool to a tee, though: endlessly giving average players too much time instead of being ruthless and replacing them.

Can cost £10m, and his value has undoubtedly increased, so just flog him to the highest bidder, and sign a better player! Or, are we to believe that there's no other midfielder in world football capable of surpassing Can's genius?!
