Despite winning the game today, Liverpool's ongoing defensive issues were exposed yet again on several occasions, and according to ex-Red Jamie Redknapp, Jurgen Klopp still has big problems to solve at the back.
Reacting to Liverpool's 2-1 victory, Redknapp told Sky Sports:
"Emre Can played so deep today, and at times he was playing alongside the centre-backs, which shows Klopp has a lack of trust in his two centre-backs".
In the first 10-15 minutes, Burnley got behind Liverpool's defence four or five times, which ultimately led to Burnley's goal, so perhaps there's some merit to this observation.
After all, neither Klavan nor Matip are particularly fast, so it makes sense to have some extra insurance at the back. That said, Can isn't the fastest either, and his lack of game intelligence ultimately led to Burnley's goal.
Pace or not, Ragnar Klavan had another excellent game overall, and made at least two fantastic goal-saving blocks in the second half. Plus, in the final minutes, his presence and harrying stopped Lowton from getting a potentially fatal shot on goal.
Jurgen Klopp described the game as a 'ugly' win for Liverpool, and he's right, but at this stage of the season, there's nothing essentially wrong that.
On the other hand, it's a concern that Liverpool struggled at home to beat a team with the worst away record in the league, and only mustered 3 shots on target for the entire game.
