After a few weeks of radio silence, the Virgil Van Dijk rumours are ramping up again, and reports suggest that are serious contenders to sign the 'superb' Southampton stalwart.
Over the last few months, Liverpool have been constantly linked with Van Dijk, and in January, Steven Gerrard joined ex-Reds Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, and Jan Molby in calling for his old club sign the £60m-rated defender.
Now, the London Evening Standard claims:
"Liverpool are serious rivals to Chelsea to sign Virgil van Dijk [who] is open to leaving St Mary’s for one of the Premier League’s top clubs if given permission"
Man Utd, Man City, Tottenham, and Arsenal are also all in the race for Van Dijk, but according to ex-Southamton star David Prutton, the Dutchman is destined to end up at Liverpool:
“Liverpool would want to get him [Van Dijk] for the right price, and Southampton will want as much as they can get. Liverpool have a good dialogue with Southampton [which] probably gives them a head start. It’ll take a lot of money to get him".
It's clear that Liverpool need to sign at least one (or possibly two) top quality centre-halves this summer, and Van Dijk fits the bill for a number of reasons, the most important of which is (arguably) that he's Premier League proven, and won't require time to adapt.
Unfortunately, Liverpool cannot compete with the financial might of Chelsea, Man Utd, and City, so in my view, a deal seems unlikely. Plus, with the added bonus of being (probable) Premier League champions, I can't see Van Dijk choosing Anfield over Stamford Bridge (which comes with the added bonus of life in London).
Will Klopp break the club's transfer record to sign a defender...?
