Anfield MegaDeal: Pundit claims Liverpool 'want to' sign 'superb' £60m powerhouse

Ex-Southampton star David Prutton claims that Liverpool have a great chance of signing one of the Premier League's most in-demand players.

Over the last few months, Liverpool have been constantly linked with 'superb' Saints defender Virgil Van Dijk, and in January, Steven Gerrard joined ex-Reds Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, and Jan Molby in calling for his old club sign the £60m-rated defender.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea are all in the race for Van Dijk, but according to Sly Sports pundit Prutton, the Dutchman is destined to end up at Liverpool:

“Liverpool would want to get him [Van Dijk] for the right price, and Southampton will want as much as they can get. Liverpool have a good dialogue with Southampton [which] probably gives them a head start. It’ll take a lot of money to get him".

It's clear that Liverpool need to sign at least one (or possibly two) top quality centre-halves this summer, and Van Dijk fits the bill for a number of reasons, the most important of which is (arguably) that he's Premier League proven, and won't require time to adapt.

Can Liverpool cannot compete with the financial might of Chelsea, Man Utd, and City, though? Plus, with the added bonus of being (probable) Premier League champions, I can't see Van Dijk choosing Anfield over Stamford Bridge (which comes with the added bonus of life in London).
