Anfield Update: Liverpool face huge battle to sign 'superb' £60m sensation. £100m transfer fund handed to Conte

Liverpool face a huge battle to sign one of Jurgen Klopp's alleged top transfer targets this summer.

Over the last few months, Liverpool have been constantly linked with 'superb' Saints defender Virgil Van Dijk, and in January, Steven Gerrard joined ex-Reds Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, and Jan Molby in calling for his old club sign the £60m-rated defender. He told BT Sport:

"Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton".

Chelsea may be about to put a major spanner in the works, though. According to The Mirror this week:

"Antonio Conte will [be handed] £100m [for a] summer [transfer] spree. Abramovich will provide Conte with the funds to recruit Moussa Dembele, Alvaro Morata, and Virgil van Dijk".

It's clear that Liverpool need to sign at least one (or possibly two) top quality centre-halves this summer, and Van Dijk fits the bill for a number of reasons, the most important of which is (arguably) that he's Premier League proven, and won't require time to adapt.

Unfortunately, Liverpool cannot compete with the financial might of Chelsea, and with the added bonus of being (probable) Premier League champions, I can't see Van Dijk choosing Anfield over Stamford Bridge (which comes with the added bonus of life in London).
