Will Loris Karius keep his place for Wednesday's EFL semi-final with Southampton?
According to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, there's a strong possibility that Simon Mignolet will remain on the bench for the visit to St. Mary's.
When asked today about the possibility of Karius retaining his place, Klopp told reporters:
"It’s pretty likely I would say that Loris plays again. It's fair for his response in training, performances and all that stuff. It's likely, not sure."
Karius literally had nothing to do during the FA Cup third round clash with Plymouth Argyle, and given the fact it's another cup game, it makes sense to keep him in goal.
I doubt Mignolet will be losing any sleep over the decision. The Belgian currently has a tight grip on the number-one spot:
* 3 clean sheets in 5 starts since returning to the first XI.
* In that time, Liverpool haven't lost a game (4 wins and 1 draw; 3 goals conceded in 5 games)
Overall, Mignolet's record for the whole season equally impressive:
* 12 goals conceded in 13 games (One every 97 mins).
* 10 wins, 2 draws, and just one defeat.
Mignolet appears to be in the midst of a resurgence, but there's no point getting carried away just yet; he's had these brief spells of excellent form several times in the past, and always come undone at some point. Will history repeat itself, or is this a new, more consistent phase of Mignolet's career?
As for Karius - all he can do is acquit himself in the best possible way, but he'll do so in the knowledge that he'll be back on the bench for Sunday's trip to Man Utd.
* Karius: €18m-rated (CIES). Recently hailed by Klopp as 'outstanding'.
