Deal 'Was Close': €38m Klopp signing confirms he held transfer 'talks' with Man Utd

Long-time Liverpool target Mats Hummels has confirmed that he almost signed for one of the Reds' biggest rivals.

When asked on Monday about historical rumours linking him with Manchester United, Hummels told the Daily Mail:

"[The deal] was very close. There were talks. I had offers from England Van Gaal wanted me but he wasn’t the only one"

Prior to his transfer to Bayern Munich, Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for Hummels, and given his association with Jurgen Klopp, many fans expected the Reds to be in with a chance of sealing the deal.

Alas, that wasn't the case, but according to Reds legend Mark Lawrenson, Klopp was never interested in bringing Hummels to Liverpool. In an interview last season with BBC Radio 5 Live, Lawro claimed:

"When Klopp arrived at Liverpool, everybody presumed he was going to try and sign Mats Hummels, but From what I’ve heard at Liverpool, Klopp has a little bit of a doubt about Hummels in the Prem.”

Hmmm. In some ways, this doesn't compute. If Hummels is good enough for Bayern Munich and Germany, then he's obviously good enough for Liverpool. Granted, he isn't the fastest central defender, but neither is Joel Matip, and that hasn't hindered his ability to hit the ground running at Anfield.

* Hummels: €38m-rated (CIES Football Observatory). Signed by Klopp for Dortmund.
