Is Southampton defender Jose Fonte set to sign for Liverpool?
After Liverpool's 1-0 victory over Everton, Dejan Lovren posted a celebratory image on Instagram, which attracted the following response from Fonte:
"Epic picture my brother!"
In response, Lovren posted the following cryptic message:
"Thanks bro. Hope to see you soon you know where ;-)"
Cloying Bromance aside, the obvious implication here is that Lovren is referencing a possible transfer to Liverpool during the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool were last linked with Fonte at the beginning of December, and in an article last week, I suggested that Fonte is likely to be target for Klopp during the January transfer window
Fonte certainly appears to be available, and in a recent interview, the Portuguese rejected reports that he'd snubbed a new contract:
"I don't know what they [Southampton] are talking about. There's nothing on the table that I didn't sign. I have been informed by Southampton that they are NOT offering me a new contract".
Reds legend Mark Lawrenson is certainly in favour of a transfer. When asked last season about Liverpool's centre-back situation, he told the BBC:
"I think Liverpool signed the wrong Saints centre-back when they bought Dejan Lovren in the summer, because Jose Fonte has just been outstanding for them".
