Liverpool are reportedly set to offer one of the club's attacking players a record deal to ward off transfer interest from rival clubs.
According to The Independent today:
"Liverpool are ready to offer Philippe Coutinho a new contract, with the Reds looking to increase Coutinho’s wages to £150k-a-week".
If this goes through, Coutinho - who is currently on £75k-a-week - will become Liverpool's highest paid player, and although £150k-a-week is a ridiculously obscene amount of money, some fans will probably argue that he's worth it.
Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are currently linked with a summer move for Coutinho, and according to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool are open to selling.
When asked last month on about the possibility of Coutinho signing for Barcelona, Klopp admitted:
"If there’s a club that can pay double what we pay, then I’ll bring the player there myself because who am I to tell them [the player] not to think about their family?".
This is a rather concerning statement as Klopp is basically suggesting that he will gladly allow Liverpool's best players to leave - with his blessing - if they're able to get higher wages elsewhere. That said, if Liverpool hand Coutinho £150k-a-week, then in purely financial terms, he'll have no reason to leave.
* Coutinho: €53m-rated (CIES Football Observatory). Hailed as 'amazing' by Joel Matip.
